#OTD in 1953 – Birth of folk singer, Dolores Keane, in Sylane, Co Galway.
Dolores Keane was a founding member of the successful group De Dannan, and has since embarked on a very successful solo career, establishing herself as one of the most loved interpreters of Irish music. Keane was born in a small village called Sylane (near Tuam) in rural Co Galway. She was raised by her aunts Rita and Sarah Keane since the age of four, who are also well-known sean-nós singers.…

Oldfield from the 90's on flaunted his influence. Voyager was another example of that, he tried to reclaim the sounds that many took from him during the 90's and he wished to warn us he was there first. While we can debate about the latter, the truth is he was one of the early adopters of the Celtic soundscapes. However, his work on Voyager doesn't reach his previous work in this vein. We can actually see this LP as him showing the proof of his older pieces in the form of the original ones, but he overshines them in order to compensate for him being taken over by his students. Still, Voyager serves as the reminder that Mike Oldfield had the right track in the 90's, he just couldn't stop cleaning that one too much.

Jimmy Magee’s Different Class: A Must Read
Tumblr media
Legendary sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee spent over half a century cementing his legacy in the world of sport. The voice that accompanied countless memorable moments from a number of different contests and competitions, Magee earned himself the nickname of “The Memory Man” for his ability to recall almost any event in sporting history. It’s that very memory that makes Different Class: My Favourite Sporting Memories a fascinating read for any sports fan. Written by Magee alongside writer Jason O’Toole, the book is full of sporting moments that Magee himself believes stand apart in a Different Class, as well as Magee’s highly lauded opinions as to who the best of the best are in a wide variety of sports, including soccer, GAA, rugby, boxing, golf, athletics and many more.
Tumblr media
As if that weren’t enough, Different Class also features a number of anecdotes from Magee’s personal encounters throughout his travels. Many notables names are mentioned, including Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Eddie Merckx, Maradona, and Matt Busby, just to name a few. And of course, though Magee was born in the United States he grew up and spent much of his career in Ireland, so there’s much mention of many Irish sports stars like George Best, Katie Taylor, Jack Charlton, Seán Kelly, Brian O’Driscoll, Rory McIlroy, Stephen Roche, Roy Keane, Sonia O’Sullivan, and virtually anyone who’s been anybody in the GAA.

a rock in a sea: songs about the ocean, the earth, and dancing
(for some reason my caption wasn’t showing up when i posted the link from spotify so i’m doing it like this instead)
here you go, o wonderful music anon, @audiaphilios, and anyone else who might be interested. these songs are very atlantic canadian (mostly nova scotian and newfoundlander), but there are a few others thrown in there. i recommend you listen to it on shuffle only because the artists are bunched together. i tried REALLY hard not to just throw the whole barra macneils discography in there (though i do have another 9 and a half hour long playlist of just them here).
the playlist is also collaborative, so if anyone has anything to add to it i’d love to hear it!!

Ireland boss Mick McCarthy hoping history repeats itself with Euro 2020 qualification
MICK McCARTHY believes history can repeat itself with Ireland gatecrashing the top two of a qualification group when nobody expects it.
Ireland lead the way in Group D after collecting ten points from their opening four fixtures.
1
Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthyCredit: Sportsfile
That leaves them five points ahead of second seeds Denmark — who have played one game fewer — and top seeds Switzerland, who have two matches in hand.
So nobody is under any illusions that the table could look a lot different after Ireland have completed their campaign.
But while most neutrals would expect the Swiss — who visit Dublin next month — and Danes to overhaul his side, McCarthy has form when it comes to defying the odds.
He said: “We did it in the past with Yugoslavia and Croatia and we did it with Portugal and Holland. Let’s hope we can do it again.”
In the Euro 2000 qualifiers, McCarthy’s Ireland were poised to take top spot before conceding an injury-time equaliser in Macedonia which consigned them to a play-off, which they lost to Turkey on away goals.
MEMORIES OF 2002
For the 2002 World Cup, a famous victory over Holland saw them finish ahead of the Dutch and this time they prevailed in a play-off, against Iran.
It was in that European Championships campaign that Robbie Keane got his first taste of competitive international football, as an 18-year-old.
But McCarthy believes throwing Troy Parrott in now would not be comparable to his blooding of Keane, who had broken through at Wolves.
He said:” I’m not ruling out Troy Parrott if he plays for Spurs.
“But I’m not going to bother with him if he’s playing for their Under-23s, no chance.
KEANE WAS A FIRST TEAM REGULAR
“Everyone is different. Everyone keeps referencing Robbie Keane, Robbie was playing in the first team.
“Walking up the tunnel and there’s a massive crowd there, you might have it, I don’t know, but you’ve got to have some personality as a 17-year-old and play in a big game like that.
“I’m not thinking about it. It might change if he plays for Spurs, that’s going to change my opinion, my perception of him.
“But if you’ve the international jersey on, anthems are going, all your mates are there, against Switzerland at home, a huge crowd there, that’s a hell of a weight on someone’s shoulders.
“Some would freeze and some would just play with gay abandon.
“I’m not saying it wouldn’t bother him but it depends on the players around him, how often he touches the ball.
“If you’re asking me about Switzerland, they might be passing it around at the back for ages. Can he cope with that, can he go and win it back, has he got the legs for it?”
LIMPED OFF INJURED
Parrott shipped a knock after scoring for Spurs’ Under-23 side on Friday but it is not thought to be serious.
But one of the reasons McCarthy does not feel compelled to take a chance on Parrott is Seán Maguire’s bright start to the campaign at Preston North End.
He netted in their win over Wigan last Saturday and McCarthy said: “He’s started and he’s scored.
“That’s all I can ask of him. It was Alan Kelly who watched him last weekend and said he was excellent, playing on the left he was really good and got his goal.
“If he’s playing in the Championship and scoring goals, he’s got to be ahead of an Under-23 player.”
JUDGE ALAN WISELY
McCarthy is also willing to make a League One player part of his plans.
Alan Judge provided the free-kick for Shane Duffy’s equaliser against Denmark before then breaking his wrist.
The playmaker suffered relegation from the Championship with Ipswich Town last season and with a mooted move to QPR not materialising, he will be playing third-tier football until January at least.
But McCarthy — who was present as the Tractor Boys lost 3-1 to Luton in the League Cup on Tuesday — said: “I watched him and he played well.
“They got well beaten by Luton but I thought he was the pick of the bunch. Do you know what?
“I’m not bothered, as long as he’s fit and as long as he plays. Why should I when it’s someone like him, a seasoned player like him?
“I’m not bothered where they’re playing, well First Division, I’m not going to go down to the Second Division but certainly Judgey, he’s a quality player.
VERSATILITY IS A BONUS
“He has that ability to pick up space behind the striker and drift in and drift out, he can go out wide and free-kicks and corners are good.
“He’s got that happy knack of finding space, running at people and turning them and slotting people in.
“I guess he’s a bit like Danny Crowley and Jack Byrne but Judgey is better than them, in my opinion.
“Everyone else can have theirs but my opinion is he’s better.
“We saw that in the Denmark game, he gave them something to worry about when he came on.”
HEART SET ON WHELAN
Similarly, McCarthy has no qualms about Glenn Whelan’s move to the Scottish Premiership after joining Hearts on a one-year deal.
On the 35-year-old, he said: “I did speak to him quite a bit.
“I said he needed to get a club if he was going to have any chance of being involved. I said, ‘I’m not bothered where it is’, because it’s not going to affect him.
“If he’s fit, he’s not going to become a better player.
“Playing up there is not going to change how he plays, he knows the game.
“He’s been great, his performances were excellent. And the four games we’ve got, it’s going to require him. They’re going to be big games.”
