#OTD in Irish History | 26 September:
In the Liturgical calendar, today is Feast day of St. Colman. 1289 – ‘All men of good will to the king’, both Irish and English, in Munster and Leinster are summoned to Buttevant in Leix (Queen’s County). A ten-day expedition which begins on this date, subdues and forces the local Irish into an uneasy peace. 881713 – Charles Lucas, physician, MP and political radical, is born in Ballingaddy,…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ABBEY ROAD—The 1969 epic album by The Beatles, Lynn Anderson, Johnny Appleseed, photographer/photojournalist (and my friend from the Davy Jones/Monkees orbit) Michael G. Bush, Carleen Carter, Craig Chaquico (good to have met you), Darby Crash (The Germs), Gal Costa, Donna Douglas, T.S. Eliot, one of my musical heroes Bryan Ferry, David Frizzell, another one of my musical heroes George Gershwin, Linda Hamilton, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon), Dolores Keane, Amanda Kearns, Julie London, Olivia Newton-John, OMD’s 1980 “Enola Gay” single, Ivan Pavlov, César Rosas (Los Lobos), Tracey Thorn, Stuart Tosh, the musical WEST SIDE STORY (premiered 1957), Serena Williams, and a great American singer-songwriter, entertainer, and NASCAR racing driver Marty Robbins. As one of the pioneers of “outlaw country music,” he released 500 recordings and 60 hit singles from the late 1940s into the 1980s. He’s best known for the western ballad “El Paso,” and I’m a fan of his interpretation of “Red River Valley.” I play both of those songs in assisted living homes, along with Marty’s “A White Sport Coat & A Pink Carnation”— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qB0NM8JbYM
The lyrics portray a shattered young man who was stood up at the prom but, without saying, you know he’s going to bounce back. Marty got the visual for this song after passing a group of teenagers decked out for their high school prom. He zipped off this song in 20 minutes. His original 1957 track is premium country-pop trimmed with doo-wop and rockabilly. His creamy smooth voice owns the story, and his goal was to out-chart his earlier single “Singing the Blues,” which was eclipsed by a competing version by crooner Guy Mitchell. Ray Conniff arranged Mitchell’s international hit, and Marty insisted Ray run the session for his new song. Marty’s instincts were correct—it became his 3rd #1 hit, and it’s still on playlists and soundtracks (it’s also name-checked in Don McLean’s “American Pie”). It’s a fun vocal work-out. If you have prom photos you’d like to share (white sport coat optional), please post. Meanwhile, HB MR and thank you for your great singing and giving us so many songs.

#OTD in 1953 – Birth of folk singer, Dolores Keane, in Sylane, Co Galway.

biography. (internalised homophobia tw, catholic guilt tw)
Christopher was raised in a devoutly catholic household, and religion has pretty much shaped his entire life. He went to catholic school, did bible camp most summers, and attended church services with his parents at least once a week for the entirety of his childhood.
Growing up, he was very close with his mom and dad. It was just the three of them, and they were like the musketeers - there was a lot of love in the house, but that love became fraught as Christopher got older and started keeping secrets from them.
He couldn’t tell his parents about the terrifying things he felt; about his burgeoning crush on a boy in his class that nearly tore him in half with guilt and longing. It didn’t fit with the church’s teachings, and he wanted to be a good son - if that meant carving pieces of himself away to preserve that image, that’s what he would do.
It was practically a given that Christopher would be a doctor some day. Helping people was about the highest calling he could think of, and between his excellent grades and copious extra curriculars, he more than earned his place at Harvard. His parents were worried how their son would fair at a secular college so far from home, but they were proud of what their son had achieved, and trusted him to make good choices.
He had a very active social life at college, but he never dated, insisting he was too busy to think about it. This was largely to protect himself, and to save him from outright lying to his parents when he came home for the holidays.
After working himself to the bone and finally completing his residency, Christopher was left to his own devices. Instead of returning to Washington as was expected, he opted to move out to New Haven, to a small town by the name of Grimrose. The town had need of a doctor, and on doing a little research into local history, he realised his mother had been born there - back when the place was called Mary’s Cove.
Having lived in Grimrose for a year now, he’s finally starting to feel a sense of something like home. He likes his neighbours, and is ever-friendly and helpful, but sometimes it feels as though there’s a sheet of glass separating him from everybody else. Nobody really knows him, not deep down, where it actually counts. He’s just a nice man, keeping everyone at arm’s length.
other things.
since moving to grimrose, christopher has started organising regular five-a-side soccer games, and can usually be found playing in the park every other sunday afternoon. he’s a midfielder, and supports chelsea football club.
he drives to the neighbouring town to attend church every sunday morning.
he’s big on volunteer work, and rarely says ‘no’ if someone calls on him to donate his time. if there’s soup that needs ladling, a community garden that needs digging, or clothes that need sorting, you can count on christopher to be there.
he loves to cook, but can’t bake worth a damn.
in an ideal universe, he’d have a dog - but he hasn’t got time to take care of one.
if he ever left general practice, he’d go into paediatrics. he loves kids, and keeps a selection of lollypops, stickers, and fun band-aids in his desk at work. one wall of his office is devoted to pictures his young patients have made him over the years.
like many doctors, he’s terrible at being sick. he simply refuses to slow down.

Only a Woman's Heart
Song by Eleanor McEvoy
My heart is low, my heart is so low
As only a woman's heart can be
As only a woman's, as only a woman's
As only a woman's heart can know
The tears that drip from my bewildered eyes
Taste of bittersweet romance
You're still in my hopes, you're still on my mind
And even though I manage on my own
My heart is low, my heart is so low
As only a woman's heart can be
As only a woman's, as only a woman's
As only a woman's heart can know
When restless eyes reveal my troubled soul
And memories flood my weary heart
I mourn for my dreams, I mourn for my wasted love
And while I know that I'll survive alone
My heart is low, my heart is so low
As only a woman's heart can be
As only a woman's, as only a woman's
As only a woman's heart can know
My heart is low, yes, my heart is so low
As only a woman's heart can be
As only a woman's, as only a woman's
As only a woman's heart can know
My heart is low, my heart is so low
As only a woman's heart can be
As only a woman's, as only a woman's
As only a woman's heart can know
My heart is low, my heart is so low

Eleanor McEvoy
Eleanor McEvoy. The song 'A Woman's Heart' spearheaded the discovery that Ireland had in its mist an array of talented female artists. An unsuspecting public found themselves listening on a daily basis to songs by Eleanor McEvoy, Dolores Keane, Mary Black, Sharon Shannon, Maura O'Connell and Francis Black .
The song tells of a woman's heartache and bewilderment after the break-up of a 'bittersweet romance'. She knows she will 'survive' and 'manage' on her own but her soul remains 'troubled' and 'memories flood' her 'weary heart' .
Eleanor McEvoy (born 22 January 1967) is an Irish singer-songwriter.[1] She composed the song "Only a Woman's Heart", title track of A Woman's Heart, the best-selling Irish album in Irish history .

Sombras del Ayer: Chelsea I
—¿No puedo admirar a mi Marco Antonio?
¿Y ahora a Kelly? ¿Quién verdaderamente lo ama? —Chels, basta.

Other Voices too (a trip back to bountiful) by Nanci Griffith is forever a criminally underrated record, and here is why:
It features more artists of note than most any charity album ever could. Literally. All these artists appear on one record, many on the same songs:
Odette
Ian Tyson
Guy & Susanne Clark
Jean Ritchie
Emmylou Harris (And Meghan Ahern)
Richard Thompson
Lucinda Willams
Rodney Crowell
Gillian Welch
Carolyn Hester
Dolores Keane
Tom Russel
Lyle Lovett
Steve Earle
Harlan Howard
John Prine
Jerry Jeff Walker
Sharon Shannon
And these are just the ones I consider large and well recognized. The record feature at least a doussin more like Rosalie Sorrels, The Kennedys, Julie Gold, Lucy Kaplinsky, Eric Taylor etc. This album is a miracle of artist collaborations and it sounds so great. Just...if you haven't heard it before give it a chance!
