Top Songs Used in Sport
Tumblr media
One activity that can unite people from all walks of life is a sport. There is a sense of community and belonging that comes from supporting your team with hundreds or thousands of others. Sports teams or events will also often have a song attached that can be used to get behind the team. Here are some of the top songs available on Vibeall that are used in sport.
Del Amitri - Don’t Come Home Too Soon
This song isn’t your typical rousing cry to get behind a team. In the World Cup 1998, soccer team Scotland used this song which was more a plea to stay as long as possible than a positive war cry. Unfortunately, Scotland failed to make it past the group stage of the tournament. To relive this memory, you can search for the song on Vibeall.
Tumblr media
Kraftwerk - Tour de France
Kraftwerk has often added a quirky aspect to their music and this song which celebrates the classic cycling tournament is another such creation. It starts with grunts and puffs from riders and adds synths along with beeps and boops.
Warren Zevon - Bill Lee
Bill ‘Spaceman’ Lee was a former Red Sox and Expos pitcher who was unpredictable on the field and opinionated off it. This song celebrates Lee’s career and life while being honest and not apologizing for his actions.
Tumblr media
Bob Dylan – Hurricane
Sometimes songs are used for good like this one from Bob Dylan. Ruben ‘Hurricane’ Carter was a boxing great but was imprisoned for 19 years after a triple murder in a bar. After reading a book about Carter, Dylan wrote this song and raised $100,000 towards his legal fees. Carter was exonerated from all charges in 1985.

Will We See Full Arenas For The 2020-21 NBA Season?
Tumblr media
Despite the ongoing pandemic, a number of sports associations have been allowing fans to attend games - with physical distancing practices in place - without any major public health disasters so far. This begs the question, could we see full-capacity crowds return in time for the 2020-21 NBA season? Don’t bet on it. But could full-capacity crowds return in time for the playoffs? “Ah, I think that'll be cutting it close,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the United States’ foremost authority on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tumblr media
Fauci spoke to Yahoo Sports over the phone at the end of November, and stated that unrestricted capacities at sports stadiums will be among “the last thing[s] that you're gonna see” as the United States pushes toward the end of the pandemic in 2021. Fauci gave the following timeline:
“We're gonna be vaccinating the highest-priority people [from] the end of December through January, February, March,” Fauci said. “By the time you get to the general public, the people who'll be going to the basketball games, who don't have any underlying conditions, that's gonna be starting the end of April, May, June. So it probably will be well into the end of the summer before you can really feel comfortable [with full sports stadiums] – if a lot of people get vaccinated. I don't think we're going to be that normal in July. I think it probably would be by the end of the summer.”
Tumblr media
With the 2020-21 NBA season set to start later on this month, and with the playoffs set to conclude before July of 2021, it appears that NBA fans will have to wait until the 2021-22 season before they can start packing arenas to enjoy the atmosphere of a sold out house.

Best Books to Inspire Your Sports-Obsessed Kids to Read
Tumblr media
If you are looking for some sport and leisure books to take your fitness to another level, take a look at these curated by the Vibeall review team.
Soar by Joan Bauer. I loved this book
Jeremiah has a weak heart which keeps him on the sidelines. His adopted father moves a lot, and when they move to a new town with a demoralized baseball team embroiled in scandal, Jeremiah becomes the motivating coach they need to lift them. Excellent writing makes this a book not just for baseball fans.
Tumblr media
Ghost by Jason Reynolds
Ghost is the first book in a series of sports-themed novels by an excellent middle-grade author. Castle Crenshaw, nicknamed “Ghost” because of his talent for running away, is drawn into the local track team. Ghost, who lives with his hard-working single mother, isn’t sure he fits in with the team. He’s not the only one on the team that struggles, however, but with supportive adults, the kids find their way. I enjoyed this book and appreciated how Reynolds created complex individuals who work with difficult choices, even when making the wrong decisions.
Tumblr media
The Girl Who Threw Butterflies by Mike Cochrane
Molly decides to join the boys’ baseball team at school. Grieving after her father’s death and not getting the comfort she needs from her mother, Molly hopes that baseball will keep alive her dad’s memories, who taught her how to play. A lovely book, not just about the game but about keeping up relationships with the people we love.

Gaelic Football, A Sport Worth Knowing
Tumblr media
Although he’s now focusing his career on travel writing, for a time, Eoghan Corry was the authority when it came to all things Irish sport. The former sportswriter and sports editor was the founding story-editor of the Gaelic Athletic Association Museum at Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland, and has written numerous books on sports history. Among his writings you can find The History of Gaelic Football, first published in 1999 and now available in ebook format for convenient reading anytime, anywhere.
Tumblr media
The History of Gaelic Football tells the rich history of a sport that is a subculture of its own, one with unique songs, stories, ceremonies, and traditions that are unmatched in the sporting world. Gaelic football is one of four sports controlled by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the largest sporting organisation in Ireland, and while Corry doesn’t focus too much of his book on the GAA, he most certainly dives deep into the history of Gaelic football, its inception, the emergence of teams and players whose tactics forever changed the game, not to mention the external influences that helped shape it. Along the way, Corry also takes the time to include some amusing anecdotes and unbelievable events brought about by the sport.
Tumblr media
Much like Gaelic football is a fascinating sport well worth looking into, Eoghan Corry’s book is a fascinating read, well worth taking the time to enjoy.

Russia Tries to Revive Olympic Dreams
Tumblr media
There hasn’t been much hope for Russian involvement in Olympic Games and some other international competitions ever since Russia’s ban from World Athletics (WA) in 2015 after revelations of widespread doping. All that could change, however, following the appointment of Pyotr Ivanov to the presidency of the Russian Athletics Federation (RUSAF). With Ivanov at the top, the RUSAF hopes to clean up its image and return to international competition, perhaps even before the end of the ban, which is set to expire in 2021.
The appointment comes as welcome news to many, particularly those who had taken part in a WA Task Force charged with setting a road mad for Russia’s return. Rune Andersen, the head of the Task Force, had repeatedly voiced frustrations over Russia’s lack of cooperation, but after initial discussions with Ivanov took a more positive tone.
Tumblr media
"Over the last few months progress has been made and there is a new RUSAF leadership to put in place the plan," Andersen told a news conference, following an "open and constructive" call with Ivanov.
Andersen went on to say that an international panel of experts have been appointed to work with the RUSAF in order to draw up clear objectives and timelines.
"The experts have already begun working and reported that the team have been very responsive and constructive in their approach," he added.
Tumblr media
"The stage has therefore been set for the new president, if he puts the necessary commitment and resources behind the project, and wins the support of the necessary stakeholders, then the panel of experts are ready to help implement the reinstatement of RUSAF's membership of World Athletics and the reintroduction of its athletes into international competition."

Jimmy Magee’s Different Class: A Must Read
Tumblr media
Legendary sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee spent over half a century cementing his legacy in the world of sport. The voice that accompanied countless memorable moments from a number of different contests and competitions, Magee earned himself the nickname of “The Memory Man” for his ability to recall almost any event in sporting history. It’s that very memory that makes Different Class: My Favourite Sporting Memories a fascinating read for any sports fan. Written by Magee alongside writer Jason O’Toole, the book is full of sporting moments that Magee himself believes stand apart in a Different Class, as well as Magee’s highly lauded opinions as to who the best of the best are in a wide variety of sports, including soccer, GAA, rugby, boxing, golf, athletics and many more.
Tumblr media
As if that weren’t enough, Different Class also features a number of anecdotes from Magee’s personal encounters throughout his travels. Many notables names are mentioned, including Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Eddie Merckx, Maradona, and Matt Busby, just to name a few. And of course, though Magee was born in the United States he grew up and spent much of his career in Ireland, so there’s much mention of many Irish sports stars like George Best, Katie Taylor, Jack Charlton, Seán Kelly, Brian O’Driscoll, Rory McIlroy, Stephen Roche, Roy Keane, Sonia O’Sullivan, and virtually anyone who’s been anybody in the GAA.
