how lae’zel grew up thinking things like love and joy are at best meaningless and at worst a weakness but then she met sindyrdra and everything she knew and believed was challenged but she felt true joy with her in spite of it all and how sindyrdra is not only the source of her joy but also the source of her believing in joy at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yo I might be drunk, but disenchanted is an amazing concept for a film because it's a brilliant allegory for the fact that if you ever forget what it felt like to be in your past, you're doomed to be a parent who continues the cycle. I'm only 45mins in, but I'm torn tf up over how well the dichotomy between Gisele and Harper has been displayed. Each of their actions can be boiled down to "I love and care for them so much and can't bear to hurt them so I will act out of survival." It's the epitome of the teen/parent relationship boiled down to it's bear essentials and so much more.

I'm literally over here crying because Gisele's character is working so hard to fight past the parenting instincts that are instilled in every parent ("girls can't be out alone!" "You don't know what you need!" "It's not safe out there") while trying to remember herself as a human being outside of imposed motherhood (the entire dichotomy surrounding how she might look at any given time, her grip on the reality of her spouse's life outside of her existence, how her friends may be perceived). One of the hardest parts of growing up in multiple households with a laundry list of parental figures was knowing that everything they did was in pure essence well meaning, but entirely misguided because they'd forgotten any semblance of existence before their "adult" lives. This movie is so beautiful for addressing that whether it was intentional or not. I feel extremely seen seeing an adult character who is as connected to their grown-self as they are to their child-self. It's something that so many of us lose, forget, or grow to resent. And THAT'S what perpetuates any cycles. It's hard to remember where you were when all that's left is how you felt and you're just trying to protect your loved ones from that same feeling. Only empathy can move us forward.

And then on Harper's end. She feels as though her own safe space has been invaded no matter how hard she tries to accept it (she's not a true daughter of andolasia, but recognizes that Gisele is doing everything she can think of to make Harper feel otherwise and therefore it would be a catastrophic disruption on Harper's end to bring up any untoward feelings on the matter). She continues to go with the flow until the flow is cut off and spat in her face ("your mother?!?!" Entirely unfair to place that statement, syntax, and vocab on her). And even so, she takes on the burden because she knows that everything that's done is out of love.

Living for this rn. Can't wait to see the resolution that ties it all together. If Gisele doesn't see that Harper needs looser reins and more recognition as her own daughter (self-proclaimed!!!) I'm gonna lose it. It's not the child's place to have grown up realizations here! Her brain ain't even fully formed yet! And she's taking on the weight of the happiness of this family! It's a team effort! Give that hoe a wand or whatever. She's true too!

Not to sound like a boomer on main, because I love my phone- I do. But I really miss the day when I could hang out in public without having to hear everyone else's phones. I don't care if there are babies crying (because babies cry sometimes) or if other people are having conversations (because that's what people come to cafes and such to do) but hearing tinny little phone sounds blasting out loud out of their speakers drives me insane.
