Theory: The Wilderness saved its two Antler Queens long before the plane crash

There are signs of a supernatural influence surrounding the girls even before the plane crash. In 1x06, we see a flashback to Lottie as a child. She starts randomly screaming in the back of her parent’s car while they’re at a red light. She is presumably seeing something terrifying that hasn’t happened yet, as she does out in the Wilderness. Her screaming results in her father being distracted and not going when the light turns green, and then a car crash happens right in front of their car; a car crash that Lottie and her parents would have been involved in if it weren’t for Lottie’s screaming (a car crash that likely would have resulted in Lottie’s death).

I think this is the first example of the Wilderness being present before the plane crash. The Wilderness gave Lottie a vision to protect her; to save the life of its future Prophet.

Then, we have the strange (and unlikely) death of Nat’s father. Nat’s dad somehow trips on the stairs and accidentally pulls the trigger of the shotgun right as the barrel was under his chin. How was his hand even on the trigger in that situation?

I’m thinking that, similar to how the Wilderness saved Lottie’s life by preventing the car crash, it also saved Nat’s life by making that freak accident happen. Nat’s life was definitely in danger in that scene with the way her father was charging at her with the gun. I think him tripping and the gun going off was the Wilderness intervening.

This is not the only time the Wilderness may have been with Nat before the plane crash. At the bonfire the night before the crash, Nat has a hallucination of Misty standing ominously at the edge of the party before disappearing. Nat has tears in her eyes when she sees her, as if she’s feeling strong fear or sadness that she can’t explain.

Karyn Kusama, the director of the Pilot episode as well as 2x09 “Storytelling” (the episode where Nat dies), stated in an interview that this scene is extremely important for Nat’s character. In my opinion, this scene is the Wilderness warning Nat that Misty will be the one to kill her one day. Nat also has a flashback to this scene right before she jumps in front of Misty’s syringe, as if she’s realizing what that bonfire hallucination meant now 25 years later as she’s about to die by Misty’s hand. Lottie said that Nat was always the Wilderness’s “favorite,” so maybe it has been with her, protecting her and warning her, all along.

Maybe I’m thinking too much, but I definitely think the Wilderness has been looking out for its two Antler Queens, Natalie and Lottie, as well as priming them to fulfill their roles out in the woods. The car crash incident is the catalyst for a lifetime of meds and treatment for Lottie, and the death of Nat’s father is extremely traumatic for her. The Wilderness not only saved Nat and Lottie’s lives, but it also created a darkness in them through these traumatic events that is necessary to fulfill their eventual roles as Antler Queens.

Unless you don’t believe in the supernatural angle, then you can take this with a grain of salt✌️

A Romantic Comedy (based on the trailer)

When I saw Carmy walking in the trailer, it reminded me of this scene with Richie in 1x06 post date.

This looks like a date gone wrong or a date that never happened for Carmy. Funny enough, the voiceover for this clip is Syd asking Why are you doing this and Carmy telling her they're going to get a star. (I also think this whole thing about the partnership agreement happens the first episode of the season.)

There are so many clips in that trailer that scream romantic comedy, even the sequence of the trailer.

Costume Spotlight: Guillermo's Sweaters in Season 2

At long last, I'm returning to the sweater pile to do a deep dive on our favorite knit-clad vampire slayer, Guillermo de la Cruz. In season one, Guillermo wore sixteen different sweaters across the season's ten episodes. In my first post I did an overview of the different types of knits and some of the little character nods I noticed in the later episodes.

Guillermo wears fourteen different sweaters across season 2, with roughly half of those being new sweaters for the season--there's one I can't quite decide if it's a new sweater or the same one he wore in 1x02 to the city council meeting, but in different lighting. That being said, someone give me his thrifting skills (and storage skills)! This is also the season where he debuts his iconic slayer trench coat and stake bandolier, but I'll do a separate post on those.

Season two's sweaters are heavy on the Fair Isle knits and cardigans, with many appearances of a new fuzzy red striped cardigan that debuts in 2x01 (pictured above). I almost think of this as Guillermo's character development cardigan, because of when he wears it throughout the season:

2x01- Just before he slays his first vampire assassin of the season.

2x08 - When he tells Nandor about Celeste's offer and then leaves.

2x09 - Throughout the episode, where we see him taking a break for the first time and refusing to listen to Nadja trying to get him to end it early, when he finds a way out of the room of doors for himself, Nadja, and Colin Robinson, and when he comes up with a compromise to save Laszlo, Colin Robinson, and Nandor from the witches.

2x10 - At his mom's apartment when he's talking about why he left, and to the Theatre when he slays all the vampires and rescues Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson.

He also debuts a fourth Coogi sweater in 2x01, this one a vertical striped pattern with dark navy and turquoise elements.

Yet another new addition to the sweater collection is this gorgeous brown and red Fair Isle v-neck pullover with a solid brown collar and cuffs. It's similar to a sweater he wears in season 1, but better fitted and with a nicer pattern.

Another noticeable new addition is this blue and gold Fair Isle v-neck from 2x06:

I want to see if there are more appearances of this one in later seasons, as it only appears in this one episode of season 2 as far as I can tell.

There's this geometric gray and black mosaic knit cardigan he wears in 2x07 to consider:

And of course, the iconic yellow cardigan and rainbow turtleneck combo from 2x08:

This sweater is such a departure from everything else he wears! So much brighter, while also being less dated. Most of Guillermo's sweaters (the fuzzy cardigan that screams 2013 aside) look like something from the 80s or 90s found in a vintage shop...or a grandparent's attic. This cardigan stands out as a very clearly modern take on a retro style (I'd say late 60s/early 70s), like something you'd get from ModCloth, and is a thinner material than most of his others as well.

Is he dressing to fit into his new household? Or is this the kind of thing Guillermo would rather wear, in an environment where he feels more comfortable and supported? We never see this sweater again, even as Guillermo gains more power and respect in Nandor's household, and we never see him wear anything like it again, either, so it's hard to say.

Lastly, there's this Intarsia knit cardigan in brown and green that appears for this hilarious brief moment in 2x10:

Season 1 Sweater Appearances

In addition to his new sweaters, Guillermo reprises several sweaters from season 1. His gray Fair Isle cardigan from 1x05 and 1x10:

The first Coogi (or Coogi-esque) sweater from season 1, with the horizontal pattern and red accents:

The lovely bird-patterned Fair Isle from 1x02 that will continue to show up all the way through season 5, and even in a promo photo from season 6:

And this thing, which I still can't decide if it's a brand-new sweater in different lighting, or the sweater Guillermo wore to the city council meeting in 1x02:

I don't have a ton of information on knitting styles to include this time, a I covered a lot of that ground in the season 1 post, but I do think it's interesting that Guillermo in this season wears some more vivid colors (the addition of more reds for him this season is especially intriguing), better fitting sweaters, and higher quality ones. While of course this could simply be due to a bigger budget for the show's sophomore season, I also think it's part of an ongoing evolution of Guillermo's style over the course of the show.

As he gains more confidence, it begins to show in his wardrobe. He even unbuttons that top button on his shirt a few times this season! And as he comes into his own more and more as a powerful vampire slayer, I think his clothes echo that as well.

screaming again JOHN MIRROR as a shortcut past interesting media analysis" -> Brilliant. That's exactly what happens with John and the fandom! (John's abusive to his kids, sure, but like *canonically* I wish ppl understood that it's HIGHLY likely that some of their faves did morally worse things.) John is a cruel dude AND he's also a scapegoat. It becomes a game of "Find the pattern to identify to BAD GUY so I don't have to think!"

Sam drank blood and almost strangled his brother bc he asked him to stop, Cas is literally Mr Genocide, and Dean held a gun to his kid's head once because God told him to. These characters are not immune to making bad, unkind, and sometimes straight up heinous choices. I think that John left a goddamn trainwreck behind him, enabling Sam and Dean to justify some of their worse decisions (Dean selling his soul for Sam, Sam going on a revenge path after Lilith), and there is a fuckton of correlation in how he raised the two of them and some of the actions they take in the future.

I also find it exhausting and boring whenever someone sees Sam or Dean (or damn, even Cas) make decisions and take actions that are similar to John, and then immediately decide that this man that this character is John Part 2, the Winchester Patriarch, Thee Abusive Monster, The Angry Man in the House.

The same thing doesn't happen when the characters echo any of Mary's actions, even though she's just as self destructive as John was and also hurts her kids. Being like Mary=good in this fandom, but being like John=bad. Which is bullshit character analysis and just an excuse not to engage with your brain.

It reminds me when Gabe told Sam and Dean that the reason they're the vessels for Lucifer and Michael is because they're just like them, with Sam being the rebellious one and Dean being the faithful one. The problem is, season 2 entirely deconstructed what the first season led you to believe (convincingly too, because they lay the foundation for it as early as 1x06). Dean and Michael are nothing alike, and Sam and Lucifer are nothing alike, even though Heaven is trying to push them into those roles.

That's how the fandom talks about Sam and Dean, and John and Mary. Early seasons Dean is more like Mary (he doesn't want to hunt, he'd never raise his kids in the life, etc), but late seasons Sam echoes late seasons Mary (they both come back to the life after trying out being normal). The reason we like to look at this shit and talk about "John Mirrors" or "Mary Mirrors" is that you can see where the generational trauma trickles down into the kids. We aren't saying that Sam and Dean are their parents. Trying to fit both Sam and Dean into a perfect he's just like x parent box is stupid, because the people Sam and Dean are the most like are Sam and Dean.

Too many of y'all are forgetting that the ever pragmatic Alicent already knew Aegon's life was forfeit years ago if Rhaenyra was to win the war. This isn't a woman who just eagerly and willingly agreed Rhaenyra can kill her son (which a lot of people are acting like she just accepted this with ease). This is a woman who knows that there is no winning under the patriarchy. That's literally her entire arc for this season; it's realizing how much the patriarchy has stolen from her and that it only has violent ends. And that's why she's getting out with her daughter and granddaughter in tow, so they can escape the system that crushed her into a pawn of men. It's one of the reasons she invites Rhaenyra to come with her, because they are both victims of this, their relationship torn asunder at the hands of powerful men.

The fact that she asked Rhaenyra to spare Aegon's life screams how much she cares about him, how much she hopes she can also save him from the patriarchal grasp. Unfortunately for her, Rhaenyra feels trapped in the system and is choosing to continue living in it, which means she has to do the very thing that Alicent predicted years ago. She doesn't want any of this anymore, but this is the world they live in. What's she supposed to do to stop it if both of her sons insist on continuing to take part? On top of that, she's been watching her son in utter agony, barely living for weeks now. Even if she thinks this is a mercy killing, it doesn't make it any easier on her. To say Alicent is choosing this easily for Rhaenyra when really she's just pragmatic and knows how the game works is seriously downplaying her as a character.

Since we didn't get any new Flanaverse show this year, here's my favourite scenes from the old ones:

1. The Haunting of Hill House: the ending of 1x06, when little Nellie says "Nobody could hear me, nobody coulds see me". It breaks my heart every single time, a short scene with such a deep meaning.

2. The Haunting of Bly Manor: Miles' Puppet Story (1x03). Incredible performance, devastating story, I still get chills.

3. Midnight Mass: so many to choose from, I just love this show. The very last scene, though, with the hymn and all the characters facing death and their reaction to it, so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time (1x07).

4. The Midnight Club: Natsuki's story (1x08). Will I ever get through it without crying? Extremely unlikely. It's a beautiful representation of what depressione feels like, the constant fight against your brain to live.

5. The Fall of the House of Usher: Verna telling Leonore how many people she saved with her courage (1x08). I was rooting for her so hard, when I heard the words "your bloodline" I just wanted to scream.
