I love the episode of New Girl where Winston goes insane trying to reserve the community table at Picca because to me Picca will always just be the random restaurant across the street from my Ralph’s grocery store with the valet drivers running into traffic because there’s no crosswalk. I’m pretty sure it’s not even a little bit exclusive.
#I really love how much they just…filmed up and down the stretch of Pico Blvd just outside the Fox lot#also when Jess gets into the fight over paper menus at Fu’s Palace#oh god the scorpion bowls

⸻ ᴅ ᴇ ʟ ɪ ᴄ ɪ ᴏ ᴜ ꜱ ⸻

Pairing: Laios Touden x Fem Reader
Headcanon: How would he be when he's obsessed?
Notes: English is not my first language. Hope you enjoy!
The first time Laios saw you, he swore you were something out of a myth.
“You’re amazing!” he had blurted after you single-handedly took down a particularly pesky scorpion-beast. “That throw, the precision! Have you always been this skilled?”
You’d laughed, shrugging off his admiration, but it was already too late. Laios was hooked.
It started small. The way his eyes lit up every time you spoke about your favorite foods. He’d lean in, listening intently, like your words held the secrets of the universe. You figured he was just being polite—until you caught him scribbling something in his journal.
“Laios, what are you writing?” you’d asked, trying to peek over his shoulder.
“Oh, nothing!” he said, slamming the book shut, his grin wide and suspiciously sheepish. “Just notes about the dungeon! Very important research!”
You thought nothing of it—until the next day, when Laios presented you with a dish made entirely out of dungeon monsters.
“I remembered you said you liked stews,” he explained, practically bouncing on his heels. “So I made this! It’s manticore tail with some wild dungeon herbs. Don’t worry, it’s safe! I taste-tested it three times!”
You blinked at the bowl he shoved into your hands. The stew smelled... surprisingly good. Hesitantly, you took a bite, and your eyes widened.
“This is amazing, Laios!”
And that was the moment. That was when you unknowingly sealed your fate.
He always made sure you had the best portion of whatever monster they managed to cook. "You need to try this! The texture is so unique—perfect for someone with your refined palate," he’d say, sliding a perfectly roasted slice of basilisk tail onto your plate with almost childlike eagerness.
Or how he’d insist on walking beside you, his gaze flicking to your face every few moments as though trying to memorize every shift in your expression. "Did you see that? Your eyes lit up when you looked at the cave crystals," he once noted, his tone as soft as the warm glow of the dungeon lamps.
“Are you hungry?” he’d ask, far too frequently. You weren’t sure why he’d stare at you so intently whenever you answered. He had a way of watching you eat that bordered on unnerving—eyes wide, as if every bite you took held profound meaning.
When you laughed, he smiled so widely it was almost painful to look at, his cheeks flushed with delight. “Your laugh,” he once said, utterly sincere, “reminds me of the soft whistle of steam escaping a pot of stew right before it’s done.”
That was Laios for you. Always comparing you to food.
"Are you cold?" he asked one evening, already shrugging off his cloak to drape it over your shoulders. “Here, take this. You need it more than I do.”
You tried to protest, but he shook his head. "No, no, I insist! If you got sick, I’d—" His voice faltered, and for the first time, you saw a flicker of something darker in his eyes. “I’d never forgive myself.”
At first, it was easy to dismiss it as harmless admiration. Laios loved everything—food, dungeons, and his companions. But then it started to feel... heavier.
One day you find out that he’d carved a tiny figurine of you out of monster bone. "It’s not creepy, I swear!" he exclaimed when you stared at it in shock. "I just thought your likeness would look amazing in bone. Look at the detail on the hair!"
At some point, it started becoming... stranger. You woke up one morning to find him crouched near your bedroll, carefully observing your face. When you jolted awake, he beamed at you like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar. “Oh, sorry! I just... you look so peaceful when you sleep. Like a dragon curled around its treasure.”
He wasn’t even trying to be creepy—he just meant it. That was the worst part.
Then there were the meals he tailored specifically to your tastes—so specific that you wondered how he knew what you craved before you did. "I noticed how you wrinkled your nose at the slime pudding last week, so I’ve been experimenting with a recipe that’s more palatable for you," he explained, his smile as bright as the dungeon’s glowing moss.
And the lengths he went to for you... they started to escalate. A particularly rare flower monster once tried to entangle you with its thorny vines, and Laios lost his usual jovial composure. His sword swung with ferocity, his face a mask of rage. When the creature was finally reduced to a pile of pulp, he turned to you, breathless. “Are you hurt? It touched you—I saw it touch you.”
You assured him you were fine, but he was already rummaging through the remains of the creature, muttering something about using its petals to brew a protective potion for you.
“I can’t stand the idea of anything harming you,” he said softly, not looking at you. “You’re... too important.”
It wasn’t just his actions; it was the way he spoke to you, the way he talked about you when he thought you weren’t listening.
“She’s incredible,” you overheard him say to Marcille one evening as they prepared camp. “She’s so strong, and clever, and kind. Did you see the way she handled that mimic today? I—I just can’t imagine this party without her.”
Marcille sighed, clearly used to his ramblings. “Yes, Laios. She’s great. But you might want to ease up a little. You’re... intense.”
“Intense?” Laios frowned, as if the idea had never occurred to him. “I just want her to feel appreciated! She deserves that. She deserves everything.”
And yet, despite the obsessive edge, Laios’s affection was oddly pure. He didn’t stalk you through the dungeon or try to isolate you from the others—though you sometimes caught him watching you with a dreamy, faraway look, as if he were already imagining the next meal he’d cook for you.
And yet, there was something unsettling in his devotion. It wasn’t malicious, but it was overwhelming. Laios had always been insatiable when it came to things he loved—monster cuisine, dungeon exploration, rare artifacts. Now, that insatiable hunger was directed at you.
His obsession was his way of showing love: an all-consuming desire to protect you, to make you smile, to ensure you were never hungry, never in danger. It wasn’t the dark, suffocating kind of obsession that trapped you. It was... Laios.
"I wonder," he mused one evening as the fire crackled between the party, "if there’s a way to preserve this moment forever. You, here, with me... It’s perfect."
For all his warmth and cheer, there was an intensity in his words that made you shiver.
And somehow, that made it all the harder to resist.

something i think is really interesting about dungeon meshi is the cast's respective views on food as the story progresses. the way many adventurers get through the dungeon is to eat when they Must, but mostly rely on healing magic to keep going when they're tired or beaten down. death is something you can buy your way out of, here.
having these lower stakes when it comes to running yourself too hard has made a lot of people in this setting kind of devalue food and what it does for you.
im not all the way through the manga yet, but so far i really like how it goes about debunking that mindset.
long post under the cut, cw explicit discussion of disordered eating. textual depiction of unhealthy methods of dealing with it. please be cautious!
it seems like to most folks, food is either a decadent luxury, like when the governor offers mr tance a feast as a show of power and wealth, (although he is the only one who actually eats in that scene as he talks about his ambitions);
[id: the governor and mr. tance talk politics and hierarchies, while the governor eats from a bowl. mr. tance's meal is not visible behind a speech bubble.
"so you believe the sorceror is an elf?" he asks.
"i can't say with absolute certainty," mr. tance replies, "but the spells are not ones dwarves and humans typically use." /end id]
like the painted-royal feasts laios tries to partake in that never actually nourish him...
[id: laios, fresh out of the living painting feast, surprisedly holding his grumbling stomach /end id]
or, to the working class, it's pretty much exclusively fuel. i'm thinking about the scene where kabru's party, ostensibly intended to be our view into how adventuring Typically goes for most people, is shown preparing to go to the dungeon by like. walking up to someone and ordering 'a weeks' worth of rations.' purely functional.
[id: kabru enters a store, and the merchant says "welcome!"
kabru says "i need a week's worth of rations for six, and two days' worth of water."
"sure thing." the merchant then reaches behind him and grabs a large cube-shaped package, wrapped in nondescript cloth and tied in place. it thumps onto the counter in front of them both. /end id]
when kabru hands mickbell his food for the trip, he complains about how heavy it is on his back. it's a necessary liability.
we also see chilchuck, in an early chapter where there isn't much food to go around, grumbling about how he used to be better at not noticing when he was hungry. he's frustrated that he's more attuned to his bodily needs, now that he's starting to fill them with regularity.
[id: chilchuck, the only one awake, sits in his bedroll and glares at the timekeeping-candle burning down in front of him while he listens to his stomach growl. moving to find his canteen and fill himself with water instead, he thinks to himself, "my stomach has gotten weaker. i used to be able to go two days without food." /end id]
(like im not even gonna lie this is a big mood. the healing process is really really annoying)
even laios, early on, working out the logistics of going back for falin, considers his expenses and ultimately the thing he decides to save money on is their food supply. like, even the guy most invested in eating as an experience kind of just assumes he will Figure It Out. its what hes eating, not how hes eating it that matters to him at that point.
[id: marcille looks down at the ingredients they've gathered, the walking mushroom and the scorpion in an unappetizing heap on the ground, and asks laios "so how exactly do we eat them?"
he responds "let's just cook them, like normal." /end id]
but its here that senshi introduces the idea of food as art and as healing. its exciting and its fascinating for laios, getting to taste the creatures hes been reading about and fighting, but i dont think it would ever really help him feel full if not for this.
[id: three panels of laios tasting the scorpion hotpot, looking stunned, and then excitedly telling senshi "delicious!"
senshi matches his energy, asking "isn't it? isn't it?" /end id]
pictured: guy who had resigned himself to kind of just doing his best rediscovers the joy in something tasting really fucking good
what they did last time isnt going to work. falin is gone, and constantly anesthetizing their pain and healing through their weakness is no longer a realistic option for the party. in order to make it through they must all relearn how to eat well, one by one and as a group over and over again, because its either that or nothing.
one of my favorite depictions of this idea thus far is when marcille is seriously low on health and mana, and both of these problems are mitigated by taking care of herself, and trying to get iron and protein
[id: marcille, looking sickly, wakes to laios saying, "marcille, marcille, can you sit up? we've got something nice for you."
she watches senshi grill pieces of kelpie liver on a low fire, while laios ties a bib around her neck. /end id]
and drinking a bunch of dead water spirits. she gets the idea, she's supposed to get in nutrients and it'll help her feel better, but in aiming for the quick, inefficient fix, namely chugging that shit down like she heard it was good to Stay Hydrated and decided that would be the thing that fixes her,
[id: marcille throws back a cup of boiled undine-water, her face red. laios asks, "do you really need to drink it that fast?"
she gasps out "...the magical energy stored in nature spirits is actually quite hard to absorb. even if you drink a lot, the majority of it is excreted without being absorbed," and takes another drink. "that's why i need to drink as much as i can."
laios says weakly "you'll get water poisoning," but marcille only stops when senshi puts a hand on her shoulder and says,
"it's easier to absorb nutrients if ye digest them with food. that's a fundamental rule of nutrition."
marcille says, "senshi..." contemplative
and he holds out a bowl of tentuclus and a thumbs up. "let's get cooking!" /end id]
she doesn't immediately realize the answer is that she needs more than that. she's been working hard. she needs care, and she needs nourishment.
once she gets that, though, she makes her boiled water into a stew, and she works to make that stew as good as she can, and everyone can have some.
because in dungeon meshi, to feed yourself or allow yourself to be fed is treated as performing a kindness for yourself. food is what propels you, but there is also an art and a joy inherent to the process of making it; in the way you feel when you've had enough to eat.
[id: senshi watches as chilchuck and marcille eat and excitedly hash out plans.
"i've got a good feeling about this! maybe it'll work out!" chilchuck says
marcille responds, "well it's easier to feel optimistic on a full stomach!"
senshi smiles, proud. /end id]
^^^ i want to put this image on my wall
when you're working through disordered eating habits, you really do have to keep learning this shit. (in my experience, learning about cooking is one of the best ways to do so.)
i'll have to see if my thesis holds up as i continue, but i think one of the reasons the portrayal here resonates with me so hard is that ryoko kui puts most of her characters at eye level with me on this. they're all working at it, too. the text and i are both commiserating, and encouraging each other, 'have some more, you'll feel better.'
#its late -_- idk if this fullly gets across what i mean but ive been thinking about this for weeks#dungeon meshi#recovery#cooking tag#disordered eating cw#im on chp 31 atm but im like. squinting and steepling my fingers looking for this theme as i go now#meta

Dungeon Meshi Final Chapter
This is it. This is what the series is about. The joy of sharing meals with those you love.

The title image has several dishes that were made throughout the series. Here's what I identified:
Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom Hotpot (Chapter 1)
Man-Eating Plant Tart (Chapter 2)
Mandrake and Basilisk Omelet (Chapter 4)
Living Armor Soup (Chapter 7) and /or Hippogriff Soup (Chapter 49)
Grilled Living Armor (Chapter 7), Boiled Mimic (Chapter 13), and Steamed Nightmares (Chapter 42)
Coin Bug Crackers (Chapter 10)
Prayer to Ward Off Evil! Exorcism Sorbet (Chapter 11)
Golden Wheat Bread (Chapter 12)
Giant Parasite From a Giant Squid (Chapter 16)
Tentacle Gnocchi (Chapter 21)
Sauerkraut-Style Dryad Buds (Chapter 34)
Barometz Balut (Chapter 44)
Sausage and Pancakes from the Breakfast Senshi Made (Chapter 47)
Boiled Hippogriff Potstickers (Chapter 50)
Hamburg Steak with Changeling Sauce (Chapter 55)
Unnamed Egg Dish Kabru Served Mithrun (Chapter 62)
Golden Country Dragon Wing (Chapter 72)
Pie That Marcille Wanted (Chapter 85)
Izutsumi has a bowl with a mushroom in it. She hasn't eaten it yet, but she might be trying to eat things she doesn't like.
I'll bet it was Kabru's idea to invite people from all around. The Town Crier's words sound like the kind of propaganda Kabru would create.
Flamela and her aide become very talkative when drunk. Those orcs may have learned ancient secrets that Kabru and Marcille have been trying to uncover their whole lives.
The demon wanted to make a blissful meal that lasts for eternity. Laios put on a grand feast and everyone in attendance was sick of eating after just seven days. More proof that the demon's plan was doomed to fail.
Fleki has eaten so much that she's got a balloon belly.
Twin braids is probably the most elaborate hairstyle Chilchuck can do. At least Marcille's braids have matching clips.
Could this be the curse?!?
Izutsumi has to always be edgelord cool person.
Huh. I would have thought Laios would have already told everyone about the lion's curse by now. But they all agree that there's no way the lion's curse has anything to do with Falin.
Not entirely sure why Marcille is afraid of hurting Laios by telling him the curse likely doesn't have to do with Falin. I guess he just already has enough to worry about. The last thing he needs is to worry about being able to resurrect Falin AND there's some other goal he is cosmically denied.
This series has a lot of themes surrounding eating as a form of social bonding and happiness. And this final chapter is explaining how it's not possible to enjoy a meal together forever because death is an inevitability.
And in addition, another theme of this series is the connection to what we eat. We eat to live, but something has to die to do that, and we shouldn't take life for granted.
But also, this is a comedy manga about a bunch of goofballs eating weird monsters. You're free to find deeper meaning to anything, but you don't need to ascribe meaning to everything.
I wonder if Izutsumi and Lycion have a similar scenario in their souls. Their human souls pin down the beast souls in them so they are the dominant being.
The moment her legs were restored.
She had the chance to discard the dragon entirely, but she chose to bring it with her.
The demon is a form and personality mana took to better understand humans and other living things. When it first came to the world, it responded to the millions of creatures wanting to eat. It understood that eating doesn't satisfy forever, and whatever gets eaten becomes part of the world.
The demon decided to join in on eating and being eaten because it wanted to know why everything participated in this. But it came to the wrong conclusion that eating was something done only for temporary pleasure. It thought the eternal happiness the ancients wished for was simply infinite food and eternally full bellies. And it couldn't understand why they wished for their destruction even though they had that.
The demon was okay with being eaten because it was infinite. No matter how much of it was consumed, it never lost anything. But Laios ate its desires and that core bit that defined the demon's self was lost. It's appetite became part of Laios and the demon has since realized that eating is more than just a pleasurable activity. It's also how we obtain the nutrients we need to stay alive and maintain our bodies. We don't just eat food and then poop it out. What we eat becomes part of us.

Laios kept a brooch of the winged lion as part of his royal garments because he believes the winged lion genuinely wanted to make people happy. He wished for the lion to not be forgotten and keep watching over the world. And the lion has chosen to fulfill that wish.
At its core, the demon may have actually desired to be part of the world. While its infinite self makes it impossible to truly exist within the finite world, it has found a role it is satisfied to have. It has stopped being a living creature and is now a force that living beings can use and helps their existence.
Falin's dress was fine until this moment. The threads look like blood vessels.
Pattadol probably styled Marcille's hair here. Unlike Marcille, Pattadol had only one way she decorated her hair and it's pretty similar to this.
Happy reunions all around. Falin's a little better at remembering people than Laios, but she only remembers Senshi as that guy who cooked them a meal.
Since when?
Pattadol is trying to look proper and not nosy at all, but her fairy was trying to listen in on everything as well.
Shuro can't bear to look at Falin right now.
The orcs like to gift vegetable crops. Maybe that adds to why they like Senshi so much.
Of course, they might also be trying to cozy up to King Laios by giving his sister gifts.
Not the most exciting final meal the series could have had.
She's got little dragon fangs too.
And it makes one last joke at Laios's expense. Despite achieving everything most people could ever desire, it meant nothing to him because he couldn't be around monsters anymore.
And one of the themes of this series is accepting that you can't have everything you want but you can still find joy in what you have. Laios may not be able to make a kingdom of monsters, but he can still make a kingdom where all races can live together, share meals, and eat what they like with the people they like.
