Golden Village Multiplex Yishun 10 - Singapore (1992)
Designed by Geoff Malone International (GMI)
"The detailing of the external cladding is reminiscent of the Kirin Building in Osaka by Shin Takamatsu, with meticulously constructed junctions of stainless steel and profiled cladding juxtaposed with lighting tubes. Unlike Takamatsu's monochromatic facade, however, the colours used in Yishun 10 are predominantly red, white and silver, with "splashes" of other primary colours—all evoke the excitement and magic of "a night at the movies". Interestingly, the Kirin Building houses a film institute and cinema buffs will recall it being used for location filming of the movie Black Rain.
A central two-storey atrium has numerous restaurants arranged around its perimeter at first-storey. The automated ticket office is located in this central space. An escalator and stair-cases give access to the spacious second-storey foyer and thence to the ten individual cinemas on the third storey. A stair-lift permits access to the disabled.
In the main foyer, aside from the functional planning, the architect obviously derived much pleasure from the task of designing the sculptural sci-fi light fittings and multi-coloured fluorescent tube lighting in an otherwise slightly dimmed interior. Floor lighting beneath laminated glass blocks and multiple television monitor screens, with constantly changing images, all contribute to the "escapism" that is an integral part of a visit to the cinema.
For a brief interlude, the cinema-goer is transported out of the HDB township and the frantic rush of economic activity into a world of fantasy, glamour and enchantment. The Multiplex is "both a centripetal and a centrifugal force" in the urban landscape; it attracts patrons from a wide catchment area and projects an image of a vigorous and enterprising new town. It is ironic that, until the early 1990s, cinemas in Singapore were closing down for lack of patronage and some were being converted to churches. Now we see not only a revival of the genre, but as exemplified in the Golden Village Multiplex Yishun 10, it can create a special urban focus."

Digital Good Omens 2 Sountrack is coming out in 4 days! 🥳 CD version in October! :) ❤ Coming soon on vinyl…
Out to Stream/Download from 25th August. Out on CD 13th October. Coming soon on vinyl…
David Arnold’s ‘end of the world’ complex and multi-genre soundtrack.
From the Award-winning composer of Sherlock and Casino Royale comes a follow up to the hugely successful, Emmy nominated Good Omens soundtrack.
Good Omens series 2 premiered on Prime Video on 28th July. The series follows the odd couple, angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) in their quest to sabotage the end of the World. The six-episode sequel to the popular adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, concerns the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) arriving without his memories to Aziraphale’s bookshop. Aziraphale and Crowley attempt to find out what happened to Gabriel, whilst hiding him from Heaven and Hell, both eager to find him.
The Soundtrack
David Arnold’s soundtrack to Good Omens was first released in 2019 to favourable reviews, with BBC Music Magazine calling it “a rollicking trip to hell and back”. Blueprint Magazine described it as “a great listen” and Sci Fi Bulletin commented on “plenty of memorable themes” to conclude that “This is another work of art from Arnold”. At times nostalgic and eerie but always varied, beautiful and full of excitement, the Good Omens 2 soundtrack showcases Arnold’s every skill from his composer arsenal. Featured here are orchestral arrangements with sprinkling of Sugar Plum Fairy pizzicato and percussion, jaunty strings and mighty choral sweeps from Crouch End Festival Chorus. Added to the mix are rock guitar riffs, and psychedelic 70s sounds and all together they create a haunting otherworldly feel, complementing the fantasy and the quirky humour of the show. The spirited Waltz of the opening theme is also present in the second series and it wonderfully sets the scene for fantastical mayhem. In series 2, this robust, evocative, and funny music entity, becomes yet again another character in the story. Award-winning composer David Arnold is well known for his blockbuster scores, including Stargate, The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Hot Fuzz, Paul, Independence Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Casino Royale as well as for his TV work such as Sherlock and Dracula. Also available: The original soundtrack to the first series of Good Omens >

My story "It Holds Her in the Palm of One Hand" (aka bird story) is in this month's issue of Lightspeed Magazine!
I'm so excited to finally be able to share bird story. Whenever I write sci-fi, I spend way too long on the speculative biology, and this is no exception. The gastor birds are one of my favorite creations, where I challenged myself to design an animal capable of traveling between planets. I hope you enjoy reading their story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Parts one and two will be available for free to read online on the 6th and 13th, but if you want to read it now, consider purchasing the issue or subscribing to the magazine :)

❝corny lines wins the girl❞
✭ pairing : rory keaner x reader
✭ fandom : my babysitters a vampire
✭ summary : sure rory’s looks changed since becoming a vampire, he’s got a bit more muscular and he grew a few inches but he was still the same the old geeky rory, a bad flirt with even worse pick up lines, turns out some people are into that kinda thing.
✭ authors note : i definitely had a crush on this boy back when I watched disney

Rory Keaner had always been the quintessential nerd. With his mop of unruly brown hair, glasses that constantly slid down his nose, and an obsession with all things sci-fi and fantasy, he was a familiar face at Whitechapel High School. But there was something different about him now, something that caught the attention of his best friends, Ethan and Benny.
Since being turned into a vampire, Rory had undergone some changes. He'd grown a few inches taller, and his once lanky frame had filled out with a hint of muscle. He still wore his nerdy graphic tees and carried around his trusty backpack filled with books, but there was an air of confidence about him that hadn't been there before. Vampirism had its perks, it seemed.
One sunny morning, as Rory, Ethan, and Benny made their way through the crowded school halls, a hush fell over the students. Heads turned, and whispers of excitement rippled through the crowd. Rory followed their gazes and froze in his tracks.
There, standing near the lockers, was a girl he had never seen before. Her name was (Y/N), and she was a vision of beauty. Long, flowing hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face that seemed like it belonged in a fashion magazine. Her eyes sparkled with an indescribable allure, and her smile could have lit up the darkest of nights.
Rory's heart skipped a beat as he watched her. He couldn't tear his eyes away. She was the kind of girl who seemed to belong to a different world, a world far removed from the one he inhabited. But that didn't stop him from hoping.
Ethan and Benny exchanged knowing glances, and Benny couldn't help but tease his friend. "Rory, buddy, I hate to break it to you, but she's way out of your league."
Ethan nodded in agreement. "Yeah, man, she's like a movie star or something. What chance do you think you have?"
Rory couldn't help but smile, a newfound determination in his eyes. "You'll never get anywhere in life if you don't try," he said with a shrug. "Besides, you never know until you take a chance."
With that, he walked over towards (Y/N), determined to introduce himself and see where this unexpected encounter might lead.
Rory took a deep breath and leaned casually against the locker next to (Y/N)'s. He couldn't believe he was actually doing this, but there was a newfound confidence coursing through his veins. Clearing his throat nervously, he turned to her and flashed a somewhat awkward smile.
"Hey there," he began, trying to sound smooth but failing slightly. "I'm Rory. Rory Keaner."
(Y/N) looked at him, her lips curling into a faint smile as she glanced up from her book. "Nice to meet you, Rory. I'm (Y/N)."
Rory's heart raced, but he pressed on, determined not to back down now. He took a deep breath and delivered a classic, albeit corny, pickup line, "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"
(Y/N) chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "No," she replied with a playful smirk. "But I did cut up my hands and knees a bit crawling up from hell."
Rory grinned, relieved that she was playing along. "Well," he said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "that must be why my heart's on fire for you."
(Y/N) burst into laughter, her melodious giggles filling the hallway. It was a response Rory hadn't expected, but it was music to his ears. He couldn't help but feel a surge of happiness at her reaction.
"You certainly have a way with words, Rory," (Y/N) said, still laughing. "I have to admit, that was a good comeback."
Rory blushed, feeling a warmth spread through him that had nothing to do with his vampire abilities. "Thanks," he stammered, trying to regain his composure. "So, do you come here often? I mean, to this locker, I mean...not that I'm stalking you or anything!"
(Y/N) laughed again, this time more gently. "No worries, Rory. I just moved here, so this is my first day. I guess we're locker neighbors now."
Rory's heart soared. He couldn't believe his luck. "Well, in that case, welcome to Whitechapel High, (Y/N). If you ever need help finding your way around or just someone to talk to, I'm your guy."
(Y/N) smiled warmly at him, and for a brief moment, the bustling school hallway faded away, leaving just the two of them. It was the start of something new, and Rory couldn't wait to see where this unexpected encounter would lead.
Rory's world seemed to revolve around (Y/N) from the moment they met. Fate, or perhaps a dash of daring, had brought them together, and he couldn't have been happier. In the days that followed their first encounter, Rory found himself sitting next to (Y/N) in most of their classes. He was determined to make her smile, even if it meant bombarding her with corny pickup lines.
In their English class, he leaned over and whispered, "Are you made of copper and tellurium? Because you're Cu-Te."
(Y/N) raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at her lips. "Well, you must be a vampire because that line was pretty dead," she replied, her tone teasing.
Rory couldn't help but chuckle at her clever response. He wasn't used to someone who could match his wit. Meanwhile, Ethan or Benny, who happened to be in the same class, watched the exchange in disbelief. They couldn't understand how their nerdy friend had become so bold and charming.
During chemistry, Rory leaned closer and said, "If you were a compound, you'd be sodium chloride because you're salty but essential."
(Y/N) laughed softly, shaking her head. "Nice try, but I think I'd be more like helium. Rare, mysterious, and you can never really hold onto it."
Ethan or Benny, depending on the class, nudged Rory and whispered, "Dude, I can't believe you're doing this. And she's actually enjoying it!"
Rory gave a proud, albeit somewhat smug, grin as he continued his pursuit. In history class, he leaned over again and asked, "Do you believe in time travel? Because every time I look at you, time seems to stand still."
(Y/N) let out a small giggle. "Well, good sir, you may have just created a time paradox."
As the school days passed, the playful banter between Rory and (Y/N) continued. It was a unique connection that neither of them had expected. Rory found himself looking forward to each class they shared, eager to see what clever retort Y/N would come up with next.
Ethan and Benny remained astonished by the transformation of their friend, unable to believe how he had captured the attention and humor of such an enchanting girl. It was as if Rory had found his own magical potion, and it came in the form of witty pickup lines and a girl who appreciated them.

this ask is so old it's rotting but one thing that will nvr rot is our lvoe 💞
Umm not a tw but idk any mythological creatures so dotn hate me also there's cannibalism
2 vers bc I luh them
Version 1 (v much based off of ur xeno x sirius post): pandora is a respected sci who's in charge of studying these creatures and she v muchxould care less abt them and views them as being less than humans abut then a new ship ment comes (mary) and pandora is droooling bc mary is litr perfect?? So even tho mary was like, sent there to be put down or whatevs pandora demands to be able to work on her and imm mary senses pandoras weakness and like starts asking for things and how could pandora say no that face?? Pandora convinces herself that she's in the position of power here and can stop anytime she wants but all it takes for mary to say that she needs a bigger room for her wing health and pandora will trip over herself to fulfill that need, "it's just for science!" she says as she gives mary a pedicure. And mary while she experiences disgust or distate to pandora (pandora cant even like fly?! Pathetic.) It's sooo fun to see pandora get infatuated w her just like that anda,so there's the whole "pandora things all otherbeings are inferior except mary" thing going on wc makes her feel 🌟 special💫 bc pandoras tests on the other otherbeings is like rip their hair out, beat them up, rip their intestines out while their still alive and swap them w another otherbeing vs pandoras tests on mary being stuff like them doing those silly quizzes in gossip magazines to see if marys a summer or spring (summer), and like pandora sketching marys features w measurements in a sketchbook and like building a whole sculpture of marys body (for the tits and ass) and like massaging her wings but mary never forgot the whole purpose of this but. Pandora while she loves maty will nvr forget abt mary being an otherbeing so like she treats her the same indulgent way a mom would treat a child demanding for a later bedtime or smth EV mary builds up pandoras trust to the pt where pandora would only lock 13 of the doors 90 locks at night and ev 13 becomes 3 wc becomes 2 wc becomes 1 wc becomes...NONE!! and mary runs a2ay the first chance she gets and when pandora finds out she kills her self after drinking marys blood
2nd ver is where pandora is a sci that is extremely skeptical of like otherbeings existing and there's a village that's being haunted by an other being in the woods and pandira moves to the woods to disprove this theory and get that dolla 🤑🤑 anyways she moves and she findslike signs of marys presence and is like "hold awnn 😱😱 watt??" And she starts doing these rituals to lure mary and one day mary appears and pandora is GONE infact in this ver it's even worse bc in that one she was taken aback by mary in gen and not the fact she was an otherbeing but now it's mary AND the fact she's an other being so it's like damn double homicide but uh anyways pandora gets obsessed and records EVERYTHINB wbt mary what tines she comes out, how long she stays, her physical features etc etc and she starts a garden even tho she hates plants and the onky flower is a marigold and she starts trying to spproach mary but the thing is madys the type of otherbeing to stand in ur yard and wait 4 u to app then run away and each day she's a bit farther down ur yard till ev ur in HER forest and she uh...eats you?? If u DONT follow her tho she'll litr kill every1 in the village but bc pandora isn't from the village and has like empathy issues so she owuldnt be affected uf this happened and doenst even believe this myth + pandora doesn't kno mary eats the ppl she just thinks she freaky like that and umm they have odd convos but it's always mary asking the qns and if pandora asks the qns mary smiles and leaves and ev pandora is so strung out she starts higkey traumadumping but marys like wait i love this bithc?? So she entertains pandoras qns and um ev they grow rlly close and pandoras mary stuff (TM) is now sm she has a whole room dedicated 2 her and like one day pandora asks her what she did w the ppl who she killed and marys says she eats them but pandora thinks she's joking so she's like "haha...wat" and marys like " yeah i have to kill and eat ppl or like ..idk what happenes bc im pike the only 1 like me but it cant be anything good...but its not that bad i onky eat the heart :) " so pandkra thinks and thinks abt this until one day she's suddenly infront o f a villagers hosue ?? W a knife in her hand ?? And the door opens and the k ifes no longer in her hands but in the neighbors abdomen ?? And she leaves him out in front of her door?? And can hear mary eat him ?? How weird. Umm anyways ev marys like I wanna change 4 u 🥺🥺 so she like moves in w pandora and there's one rule pandora has wc is mary can't enter that one room and they have fun being silly goofy Lil wuh luh wuhs and going on fates and mary starts getting curious bc pandora is always in that room at the end of the day (shes recording her mary scrapbook) and mary starts believing pandoras being unfaithful or whatev and the anger festers (big theme w her btw) until one day she snaps and like stabs pandora w her talons and after being stabbed by marys talons ur litr a goner bc theyre posionous and when pandoras bleeding out u kno that scene in bones and all ?(have not seen the movie bc im scared but have read the wiki summary and thats like the same thing) the one where the character is bleeding out and convinces and pleads w the other to just eat them bones and all ?? Thats what happens pandora pleads w mary to eat her so they could b tghtr 4ever but mary can't bring herself to do it so she onky eats pandoras heart and savors it like a delicacy and then she buries pandora under her marigold flowers and she goes into the room and realizes that pandora wasnt being unfaithful 😯😯 she was just being a weirdo abt her !! Wait...pandora wasn't being unfaithful....oh. and ev mary gets so depressed she digs into pandoras grave w her hands and like buries herself alive in the ground w her
#U g7ys don't understand how old this ask is#Once again I don't fw this post but whatevs#Did not proof read this ull have to decipher this post like It's a df lang#Yap tag

I hunger for good dubbed anime to watch. Sell me on Trigun-make me the newest fandom convert.
A'ight. Get comfortable, this is gonna be a long one.
In its simplest sense, Trigun is a sci-fi western story that grapples with some pretty profound questions about love, principle, volition and autonomy, hope and despair, family and friends. Vash's secrets are stranger and more terrible than can be imagined in advance - I promise you, whatever spoilers you've learned don't prepare for the wrenching sorrow and horror of his life.
But it is a fundamentally kind story. And also very funny! Vash is in many ways a Looney Tunes character. He's a strange and sweet man with no attachment to his dignity and way smarter than he seems, which means he's doing it all on purpose. He might be my single favourite character to appear in any anime ever.
Trigun is set on the burning desert planet of No Man's Land, where a set of colony ships crashed a century and a half ago. The planet is almost devoid of resources, so we rely upon beings called Plants to survive - precious biological reactors that can produce power and water. They are expensive and difficult to find (the technology to make them was lost in the crash) and more of them are failing over time. Enter Meryl Stryfe (an insurance consultant in the older continuities, a reporter in the new one) set to track down Vash the Stampede, the Humanoid Typhoon, a man with the highest bounty on his head in living history: sixty billion double dollars. The crimes attributed to him are terrible. Mass murder, the destruction of cities. So Meryl's going to try and monitor him to see if the damage he causes can be reduced. And that sets her off on learning the story of Vash's life and the history of the planet he walks. Other characters include Milly Thompson (Meryl's assistant and friend, who is set to show up in Trigun Stargaze) and Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a man who quite literally bears a cross and odd secrets, but none quite so strange as those of the man he staunchly befriends.
Okay so. A lot of people started with the OG anime series, released in 1998, and find a lot of value in it, but I have to front: I did not enjoy it at all. While Vash's silliness is cute, it's also wholly unfocused, the dub extremely amateurishly written and acted, and the attitude towards women in it is fucking weird, bordering on disgusting, which I gather is because the director kept pushing the pervy comedy and the staff all hated it. That said, the soundtrack is a banger, and I like that it gave Meryl more of a position as the viewpoint character. The dub was on Youtube but... seems to have been removed, great. So I don't know where you can find it now.
Then there's the original manga. The two initial volumes were shounen, but the magazine folded before it could be complete. When Nightow revived it in another it was reclassified as seinen and renamed Trigun Maximum. I strongly recommend it in its entirety, because it's a magnificent story. A more or less definitive online fan translation is floating around, it should have everything you need.
And then there's Trigun Stampede.
I love the manga a lot, and it's obvious the people who made this show did too. It engages with its themes and plays with the expectations set up by it being an adaptation while clearly resounding with love for the story. Everyone working on this goes harder than I've ever seen anyone go on anything - music, acting, animation, cinematography, even the writing in the English dub is powerful and meticulous, with an unflinching eye to the darkness of its themes. Because Stampede specifically talks about how Vash became the man he becomes when he doesn't done it yet. And it also does something absolutely extraordinary, which is discuss the persecution of femininity even in those who are not women. This Vash is much softer, passive, gentle and nurturing, and the story is relentless in the brutality he attracts. This version of Vash's genocidal brother might be the most chilling of all, because he is realistically emotionally abusive even as it's obvious he loves and needs his twin.
Plus the fight scenes are, hands down, the greatest I've seen in animation for the last decade. There can be no debate. The final battle in the twelve episode is a thing of beauty, perfect characterisation and relentlessly ratcheting tension, spectacle that blows your eyes out the back of your skull.
It all really makes me happy. It's... man, it's hard to state how beautiful and inspiring I find the story. I really hope you love it, and I'd love to discuss it with you once you're done!
(I've written much, much more about it in this handy-dandy index, but it's riddled with spoilers, so beware.)

What do Fiction Podcasts have to say about the future?
Whenever you write a story set years from now, how you construct the world around it creates a new way to see the future, a fictional image to a reality we could be headed towards.
Fiction podcasts love to play within the sci-fi genre, and the thousands of audio dramas they have given us new pictures of what our world could look like in the next century (or a few years closer).
In this article I want to analyze the settings in the following shows: Hello from the Hallowoods, Desperado and The Strange Case of Starship Iris.
Hello From the Hallowoods
Hello From the Hallowoods welcomes us to a world ravaged by black rains and capitalism’s greed. After a natural (but man-made) disaster involving acid rain and flooding the world’s successions gave birth to two different types of beings: those who prefer to dream in a company’s “Prime Dream” and those who stay awake to continue living.
Even though the world is post-apocalyptic on paper, it never feels like it. Rather it is enchanted, there are woods where gods, revenants, devils, giants and zombies fall in love with themselves and with each other, places where community is found.
This, I attribute this to the fact that most characters don’t lament a nebulous “end of the world”, since this is the world they have always been living in and they are going to make the best of it: find family, friends, lovers, build homes and destroy bigots.
You leave the world of Hello From the Hallowoods knowing that even a doomed world is worthy of being awake for.
Desperado Podcast
Desperado Podcast also takes us to a world that was looted, but this time mainly by religious colonialism.
Neo-colionalism has made itself tangible through genocides and direct targeting to believers that worship other than the “Old man in the Sky”. In its first episode a community in México which revere La Catrina (a goddess in the show inspired by a popular figure in mexican art) is wiped out by the crusaders.
From there our protagonist Elio is the sole survivor of his people, however all is not lost as he teams up with Talia (the chosen of Baron Samedi) and Shinji (whom I believe is a death kami?).
Elio now literally carries the memories of his community as the vessel for her goddess. Likewise in Desperado, the magic of the characters is the legacy their ancestors gave them, and it is what keeps them alive in the violent world.
Though if we are ever to worry that our protagonist could fall into its clutches, the structure of the world soothes our preoccupations. You see, it is the characters within the story that are narrating their own experiences to the audience so we know that after all the pain, they ended up safe.
What Desperado tells us about the future is that, even with the ongoing genocides, white-washing of our culture, and neo-colonialism in general we will end up victorious in the end, and that our history will be forever within our memory.
The Strange Case of Starship Iris
The Strange Case of Starship Iris, is the most sci-fi audio drama out of the bunch. It follows the crew of the Rumour, a smuggler's ship, as they try to uncover the dark secrets of the Federation and evade persecution.
As with the other two properties, the future is not an easy world, but our characters are making the most of it.
In a post-war galaxy, the crew of the Rumour is smuggling space-ship parts, medicine, and erotic magazines until they find a help alarm coming from the Starship Iris and rescue biologist Violet Liu. From there they are involved in a mystery which, if the truth comes to life, they could be charged with treason against the Intergalactic Republic.
Throughout the two seasons of the podcast, Violet Liu and company heal together the scars that the war and its result: the Intergalactic Republic left them. They fight against the government not only through robberies, infiltration, and coordinated efforts with rebel groups but also by eating latkes, drinking, singing shanties, and getting gay jewish married.
To conclude
if queer podcasts are telling us something about the future, it is that it may be equally messed up as the present but that queer, disabled people of color will exist beyond the end of the world and that even in the bleakest of futures we will continue to love and thrive.
#hello from the hallowoods#desperado podcast#strange case of starship iris#hfth#tscosi#article#audio drama#audio fiction#fiction podcasts#also#is so funny how only one out of the three shows is like “true” sci-fi but hey the three are set in the future (or an alternate reality in d#desperados case#but whatever)

Now I’m only antiquated to the WEBTOON comics but I noticed amongst the Griz Grobus sequel lore book there was a tidbit on Hive-men, I’m assuming that was a bit of a reference to Humanity Lost? And if it’s alright can you go into more on this lore?
Ah this is an interesting wrinkle - not to toot my own horn too loud, but by god, my hive men predate humanity lost by a good few years!
They first arose while I was working on Prophet and collaborating with my friend Matt Sheean on a story about hive-men on mars, back in 2013 (that never quite materialized into a solid story)- with the main thrust of the tale being not about the hive as an inexorable mindless mass, enslaved to a queen (which is the usual villainous hive depiction), but with the hive as a sort of beneficial, eusocial, communitarian approach to living on a hostile world - contrasted well against the individualistic, identitarian and ultranationalistic worldviews of the earthmen trying to conquer them. (Ive read enough sci fi with the same mindless hive army...)
(below - one of matts drawings for the hive city)

But their first visual appearance of my version was sometime in 2015, i think, for the Island magazine cover posted below. (Trade between baseline humans of some type and the hive men, goods being carried by silk-line to the great dyson tree...)
The first tale of the hive men i made (second ever story on my patreon) was drawn in 2017, and covers a dyson-tree habitat (in this case, grown around the comet hale-bopp) encountering a voracious organism of the void:

The latest story of the hive-men, drawn in 2021, is about an interloper earthman, a deserter from an invading army, who has found a new living among the martian hive-people, in a story called "A Portrait of the Artist as Hive Parasite" (colored by my longterm collaborator, Sergey Nazarov - without him i would wither and perish)

These stories can be found on my patreon, and they'll also be showing up in print (at some point, probably next year) once I get my next short story collection sorted. Hell, they'll probably end up online on webtoons soon enough, too!

You mentioned Beast Boy was in “Space Trek”. What did he do on that show as character “Tork”?
What did he do to prepare for his role (like: wear special uniform and makeup, shapeshifting his appearance, memorize lines for his role, practice stunts for action scenes, learn to do facial expressions on command, …) and how did he get the role?
Was he already an actor before he joined the Doom Patrol or became one while being on the team or after leaving the team?
Where else did he play as an actor? Was he a stunt performer, a creature performer, a stunt double, a motion-capture actor, an animal actor or a mascot (natural or anthropomorphic animal, human form in fursuit, …)?
Did he do all stunts on his own or were they sometimes performed by a stunt double?
Did he have to wear special gear (bodypaint, clothing, accessories, …) for certain acts?
Are you trying to get me to summarize a TV show for you? I mean I will because I think Gar Logan is one of the most interesting metahumans alive from this sort of thing because he IS so public and so prominent in his role as a metahuman but I should make a couple of things clear.
I am NOT a very good Space Trek fan. I have seen ONE series in its entirety, Space Trek: Engager. The prequel series with Scott Bakula which I liked and then found out I wasn't supposed to. I've also seen the first 2 seasons of Space Trek: The Next Chapter (the part of THAT show everyone says you're not supposed to like) and the movie Space Trek II: Revenge of Hun.
This is technically out of my purview since it comes from Mr. Logan's private life as a metahuman not his actions and the fallout thereof from his work as a SUPERHERO. Plus a lot of this is industry gossip and magazine faff so if I get it wrong go complain to the paparazzi websites where I had to find it.

(Logan on the series set and in his series costume delivering a PSA for missing meta-teens.)
Basic background I'm sure everyone already knows: Space Trek 3016 is one of the many, many, MANY series in the wide Space Trek franchise descended from 1966's Space Trek: 2022. Most of its core series follow the adventures of various ships under the designated ship Engager to seek out new life and new understanding in a utopian science fiction setting usually based around a mix of pulpy sci fi and sociopolitical commentary. 3016 was positively received by fans and is touted as "controversial" by bigoted man-babies on the internet who are too dumb to have gotten any of the previous series' bold faced political allegory and so are threatened when black and gay people exist in science fiction. Logan was cast as Lieutenant T'imm T'ork the son of Tham Tork a character from the original Space Trek 2022. The T'orks were always envisioned as Martians since the original show but in later entries have been pretty thoroughly retconned into resembling what we know of what Martians were actually LIKE and how they existed. (Notice that the character names began including the verbal stop that all Martian names have, though obviously T'ork is not a real Martian Clan). Since the existence of real Martians wasn't widely known when Space Trek 2022 aired but it certainly is now. Logan was obviously cast because his green skin and ability to shapeshift into different animals means he can pull off things that Martians can do without the use of special effects (as one can imagine telepathy and invisibility are WAY cheaper to fake on screen than shapeshifting). Logan isn't able to do the kind of minute shapeshifting that would allow him to alter his face with his powers, limited instead to fully bodily transforming into an extant Earth animal but they write around it in what episodes of the show I watched for "research"...and am now watching the rest of for...research, yea that's the ticket. (It's a good show, since nobody asked, and he's good in it) While Space Trek 3016 was Logan's breakout role he credits his interest in acting to one of his mentors in the Doom Patrol and his adoptive mother, Rita Farr (Commonly known as Elasti-Girl). Who is obviously a famous actress in her own right. Who has been supportive of Logan in his pursuits and even guest stars on Space Trek for 2 episodes as T'ork's martian mother T'ena T'ork (they did have to paint her green, BUT the woman can shapeshift!). He's been in a LOT of things since then, as the first really famous and really open metahuman performer he's played roles as diverse as the leading man in romantic comedies to playing himself in biopics about the Doom Patrol and the Teen Titans. He is "hard to work with" in that he usually tries to insist on doing his own stunts with the logic that what he survives as a superhero on a daily basis is more dangerous than a well rigged performance but is usually shot down by the logical that if something DOES go wrong the movie needs all his limbs intact and that that safety is what stunt people are for. He's never really gone into heavy makeup or special effects, one of his main boons in performance is that the most impressive things he can do, he can do totally naturally (he's even starred in a few family films AS animal sidekicks or the like because of the things he can do in animal forms that animal actors can't). One images though that more than a few directors have wanted to break something when he had to run off set AGAIN to go save the world. It hasn't dampened his fandom any, as any perusal of this very website will obviously attest.

A monstrous tripod, higher than many houses, striding over the young pine trees, and smashing them aside in its career; a walking engine of glittering metal, striding now across the heather; articulate ropes of steel dangling from it, and the clattering tumult of its passage mingling with the riot of the thunder. A flash, and it came out vividly, heeling over one way with two feet in the air, to vanish and reappear almost instantly as it seemed, with the next flash, a hundred yards nearer. Can you imagine a milking stool tilted and bowled violently along the ground? That was the impression those instant flashes gave. But instead of a milking stool imagine it a great body of machinery on a tripod stand. [...]
Seen nearer, the Thing was incredibly strange, for it was no mere insensate machine driving on its way. Machine it was, with a ringing metallic pace, and long, flexible, glittering tentacles (one of which gripped a young pine tree) swinging and rattling about its strange body. It picked its road as it went striding along, and the brazen hood that surmounted it moved to and fro with the inevitable suggestion of a head looking about. Behind the main body was a huge mass of white metal like a gigantic fisherman’s basket, and puffs of green smoke squirted out from the joints of the limbs as the monster swept by me.
Let's talk tripods! Every artist and fiilmmaker has different interpretations of the fighting machines. It's not hard to picture a towering three-legged alien death machine, of course, Wells gives us a good picture of what they look like, but I want to go over a few depictions of them and compare them to his written description, in no particular order, because I think it's interesting, and I think WOTW might actually be a special interest:

Wells drew this one himself. It's a stick figure, of course, but this was how he pictured them. I especially like the little guy going "oo-er!" at the sight of it, almost in polite terror.

The BBC version. To me, this one owes a bit more to Transformers design-wise, and moves like the Cloverfield monster, like the MUTO, like a lot of giant monsters we've seen in recent years, terrestrial or otherwise. But they are still menacing, and they actually make a clear "aloo!" noise when calling to each other. I've got to give them that, even though the BBC screwed up the Martians, the cylinder, they kept going on about Russia, the whole "you can't marry her, you're already married to your cousin" bit. It was a mess.

The Edward Gorey illustrations. O is for Ogilvy, burned like the flag. P's for the Parson, oh, what a drag. Sorry. This is basically a flying saucer with legs. Bit silly, but the tentacles are there, and the legs aren't the stiff kind Wells hated. Which brings us to...

Warwick Goble's illustrations from the original publication of WOTW in Pearson's Magazine. Wells famously hated these so much that when WOTW was published as a book, he wrote a segment into the story ragging on these stiff-legged water tower tripods. I think Goble took the milking stool description too literally, his tripods are always drawn tilted.

The 2005 Spielberg tripod. Great. Massive. Scary. Everything is there. The tentacles, the Heat Ray arm (two even), the suggestion of a head, even the basket. Say what you want about this movie with its excessive amount of Tom Cruise and young Dakota Fanning screaming, but the tripods are fantastic. Damn near perfect even. I think Wells would be very pleased.

The 1953 design. I am very fond of these, they're a great classic sci-fi ship, but they're more akin to the flying machines than the tripods. The filmmakers try to loophole their way out by talking about invisible electrostatic legs (which you can see when the machines initially appear) but I'm pretty sure they went this route because the film was getting more and more expensive and the budget wouldn't extend to stop-motion for the legs. Still, a wonderful creation, the goose neck/cobra head design for the Heat Ray is a good touch and my god, the hissing, ticking noises these things made. Love them.
The Jeff Wayne musical design. My favourite. My beloved. My nightmare fuel. Totally iconic. I'm sure when most people think WOTW, their first thought is the legendary album cover featuring one of these monsters melting the Thunder Child's valiant heart. Doesn't make them book-accurate though. The Heat Ray is built into the chassis, it's all one unit rather than a separate head on a body, the basket was given to the handling machines, and they are stiff-legged in stills. But they're scary in motion, and their howls still give me the jibblies. OH GOD, THOSE HOWLS. Opening Horsell Common And The Heat Ray on the Highlights album with that scream isn't fair!

Henrique Alvim-Corrêa's illustrations for the Belgian publication, and Wells' favourites. The effects of the Heat Ray are chilling, and they're definitely sinister when there's a lot of them just standing there or coldly blasting humans. But I'm just not sold on those googly eyes, they make them goofier. Although when these designs were used for the War of the Worlds 1913 indie game (which I still need to play) the eyes were just blank. Redemption!

The Sith don't want peace.
I've seen some fans use the below quote by Lucas in the Revenge of the Sith director's commentary to frame Darth Sidious/Sheev Palpatine as "evil but with well-meaning intentions".
"Lord Sidious thinks he's bringing peace to the galaxy because there's so much corruption and confusion and chaos going on. Now he's gonna be able to straighten everything out, but the price the galaxy is gonna have to pay for it is way too much."
And uh... no.
Sidious thinking that him ruling the galaxy will bring about peace as a byproduct and him wanting to bring about peace are two very different things.
He's not doing what he does for altruistic reasons. He's a selfish dick who is saying that technically the galaxy won't be fighting anymore and the corruption in the Senate will be quelled... because of course it will be, they'll all be under his thumb in his totalitarian regime.
So Palpatine is not lying, but he's not being genuine either. And that's his whole schtick.
"The Jedi are holding you back, Anakin." Yes, because Anakin has a tendency of flying off the handle, mainly because you enable him to give in to his darker instincts, Sheev!
"The Jedi are trying to take over!" Temporarily? Yeah. Because you're a dictator who orchestrated a war and cemented division across the galaxy, and everyone behind you is corrupt to the bone, SHEEV!
He's not Thanos or Killmonger, he's not the "if you think about it, he's actually a good guy who took it too far" villain.
This is a modern myth with a binary view of good and evil. He's Iago, Jafar, Freezer. He's not "gray", he's the classic "he's evil because he can be" villain. The Emperor is the Devil. As stated by Lucas himself:
"Palpatine is the Devil. There’s no fall from grace there. He’s the evil one." - Starlog Magazine #337, 2005
And the Sith are not pragmatists or people who try to bring positive change using their passion. They're not "free thinkers" who "follow their own path". They're not "religiously persecuted for pursuing knowledge beyond the dogma of the Jedi".
And this battle between the Jedi and Sith, thousands years prior to the films ⬇️...

... it didn't happen the way it's shown in the comic panel. That's Sidious showing horrific unreliable visions to Maul - a child - to indoctrinate him into hating the Jedi.
You know who does that? A cult. That's what the Sith are.
Hell, their code was partly based on Mein Kampf.
The whole "the Jedi 'limit' but the Sith 'embrace' and that's why we're being hunted down" line is just that. A line.
It's what the Sith tell themselves to justify the fact that they fucked with Dark Magic, got corrupted, and are now making it everyone else's problem.
"The Sith are people who are very self-centered and selfish. [They] learned how to manipulate both sides of the Force, and then they fell into the trap of being corrupted by the dark side." - Sci-fi Online, 2005
Which is why the Jedi step in, to stand up to them.
"The Jedi are the enemy of the Sith because the Sith want to dominate the galaxy, to control everything, and for a thousand years they have had a plot against the Jedi." - Sci-fi Online, 2005
The Sith just wanna subdue and control everyone around them, including the Force itself, to fashion the galaxy in their image.
"The end game for the Sith was to bring the world into a very selfish, self-centered, greedy, evil place, as opposed to a compassionate place." - James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction, 2018
So sure, have fun with your The Old Republic OC, go to town.
But when it comes down to it, when we're talking about the intended narrative (I'm looking at you, The Acolyte):
The Sith don't care about peace, they're literal religious extremists.
While some Sith may say they're misunderstood and some may justify themselves as being altruistic... at the end of the day, they're objectively not. They're greedy, power-hungry and self-centered.
They're the anti-theme to Star Wars' theme of "be compassionate".
#again 'The Acolyte' looks like it'll be objectively good but it's a real slippery slope man#sith#Darth Sidious#Sheev Palpatine

Analysis of Tervo throughout the seasons
I think the reason why I love SO so much is because the romance is not the reason you watch the show, at least at the beginning. For 3 seasons straight, the two characters who have so much chemistry aren’t in love. Or technically, they’re not together. Which makes sense, because they’re not supposed to be in love. They are shlorpians with teammate affinity.
(Note that I think the whole Valentine’s Day plot was a bit of a stretch, with teammate affinity being something that’s literally never been mentioned once. But you know what ? I can look past this. There are worst stretches in cartoons. Like the Simpsons.)
What makes their relationship so interesting is that, not only do they absolutely work even though they’re complete opposites (I know, that’s the point of the show), but they have been sharing that braincell ever since the first episode. Terry shows something Earth-related to Korvo, Korvo actually takes an interest because it fascinates him, they have fun and bond, it goes to shit, Korvo goes back to working, and repeat. They don’t have the best dynamic, yet their bond is strong enough to make it work. And it works because even in the first Season, they like spending time with each other.
S1 :
In season 1, Korvo spends most of his time on the ship. Half of the time, Terry is here to keep him company. He doesn’t do anything, he just sits there with a magazine or a Tiki drink and blabbers about human culture. And his inattentive and forgetful nature sometimes gets Korvo hurt when he fixes something. But still, he remains. Even though Korvo could and probably should banish him from the ship for their own safety. But the thing is, he actually likes having him around. Despite all his faults, Terry is sweet, and cares enough about him to stay in this boring ship to talk to him. That’s more than probably anyone has ever done for him, from what we’ve seen of their past.
As for Terry, he sees this guy who works literally all the time, and even if he usually shuts out anything fun, when Korvo does indulge him, they get into some crazy sci-fi action. He also knows his friend works hard, and does all of the chores, and cares for the whole family, even if he never expresses it directly. If you headcanon that he’s sapiosexual (« It is sexy when you know about the ship »), that also explains why Terry had some interest in him as well.
Even in the first season, even when they hadn’t shared a single kiss, they liked each other. (big up to the dumb ray episode that made people go nuts when it came out. We’ve come so far)
They’re not in love, but you can already see that Korvo will be the one to fall for his opposite first. Terry annoys him so much - and by grey gods, he endured more stupidity from his friend every day than my parents in a year. But he knows Terry genuinely chooses to spend time with him even though he could be boning humans literally 24/7. He chooses to stay in this boring ship with him to talk and just spend time together.
S2 :
They pretty much share the same dynamic in Season 2, except that now, they also share kisses sometimes. It’s not exactly a love kiss, at least not yet. It’s more of a way to say « I’m sorry » and « thank you ». It’s not often and it’s treated as a treat. Other than that, everything is the same. Terry keeps going around to have intercourse with humans and comes back in the ship to eat and hang out with Korvo. And… I have a theory. A SO theory. Remember this ?

It’s barely a 1 sec image of Korvo squinting while watching Terry vibe with a random human. It’s from the red goobler wedding episode.
And I think half of the reason Korvo… did what he did in that episode, was because he was frustrated with his relationship with Terry. Or rather, the lack of relationship he was wishing for. And so, there was this other being, that had a deep connection to him, and who he vibed with and who wanted him… and they boned. And Korvo told him they should get married. And their relationship worked for a solid 2 minutes.
I wholeheartedly believe this whole thing was much more about Terry than it was about anyone else. And if this has already been explored in like, 50 fics, I am sorry, and proud that I realized this by myself.
S3 :
Anyway, let’s keep going with Season 3. This one marks a huge change in their dynamic because it’s the year Korvo finally decides to put down roots on Earth. No more fixing the ship all the time, just occasionally. Thus, he spends the rest of the day with Terry or his family.
… Which makes him realize just how much time Terry spends with other humans, with whom he shares more than just hobbies. And it really frustrates him. Along with the Gladwell episode, he openly voices his jealousy this season. Maybe he even realizes that the "smooch on the lips" wasn’t just their thing, but that Terry did it with random strangers in the street ? In any case, he hates it.
(Small detail that even though Korvo craves something more with Terry, he’s the one who shows it the least. He tries to keep this "authoritative and strong and awesome" persona even when he just wants to rip Terry’s shirt off. My proof : « And then after that, we make out ? / Maybe. / That means no. / No ! It means… maybe. »)
This season also doesn’t show Terry having sex with anyone. In fact, it shows him being abandoned by his lovers who turned out to be psychos. Instead, he gets to share more of what he likes with Korvo and spends more time with him (the line, the skull bullet, tacos bell). And he’s obviously very happy with this new dynamic. Not only does Korvo listen to all of his stupid ideas, but now he actively participates in them. Gradually, he spends more time with his teammate and therefore, less with humans.
S4 :
Season 4 is the second best after Season 5, and not just because Dan Stevens joined the party. In season 4, Tervo don’t just smooch. They completely kiss and moan like sexy savages. They have sex twice on camera, even though we only see it once. Everything changes, but they still have the same chemistry they had in Season 1. Do stupid things, get upset, make peace, repeat. Then make out. That’s the difference. Korvo saves Terry in the stock-a-verse with « the power of love » and stabbing, and Terry tells a stranger he can’t have sex with her because he’s in love with his partner. *squint at the Valentine’s Day episode*
But then, after they "finally realize that they have love", they immediately get married. As if what Shlorp told them about their species was the only thing holding them back.
And then… oh boy. That’s some loving, horny rollercoaster we get on for Season 5. I had as many « awwww » moments watching it as I did watching WOY, but not for the same reasons.
S5 :
This time, their dynamic actually shifts. Korvo is more than ever the one doing the silly, stupid shit. And when he’s not spending his time beefing with a human, he’s with his family and/or lover. Tervo don’t argue about stupid shit anymore. They let it slide. And they truly, deeply love each other.
Korvo clearly shows it more, as he’s been dying to express his feelings (the skirt, the endless honey moon, the desperation to keep the what if device away). But he didn’t know if it was normal or even allowed to do before the Valentines Day episode. Now that he knows they can be in love and are, he doesn’t count the seconds, the pennies, the attention : it all goes to Terry.
I’m telling you, that pupa specialist is spoiled as hell every day. But he doesn’t love Korvo for his ways of always going the extra mile. He loves him for the same reasons he liked him at first : he cares for the family, he’s smart as hell, he’s dedicated. Yet he’s still so emotionally stupid. But it’s fine, he can be the emotional intelligence for the both of them.
I honestly wonder if we’ve reached the peak of their relationship or if there will be much more. Maybe in Season 6, we’ll see Terry sacrifice some things for Korvo. Maybe Zarck will kidnap one of the duo and they’ll spend three episodes getting him back. Maybe we’ll finally have the episode that explores Korvo and Terry’s past to understand their daddy issues. Or maybe we’ll have more Gravity Falls style shenanigans with the replicants. I don’t know which idea I’d like more, honestly.
Anyway ! Thanks for reading. That was some long analysis. I’m going to eat breakfast now. Toodles !
#solar opposites#Tervo#relationship#character analysis#this has been a long time coming#and they spent a long time comin’#get it ? okay fine - I’ll go eat#oh and if I made a mistake please do tell

jihoon: majored in creative writing in uni and now is an editor at pledis magazine, working with yn! focuses on writing abt music/poetry/literature critiques but also contributes his own creative nonfiction pieces. has always been blunt with yn, but she understands that's his love language.
