it’s so refreshing to be the smart kid for once but i hate how undervalued humanities and social sciences are like why do schools put such high value on stem??

humanities and social sciences are so important like?? it makes no sense to me

like me getting A*s in my philosophy essays is like an ‘oh well done’ but someone gets an A* in maths or something and the whole world knows about it

Academic tumblr, this is an SOS!

I just started my graduate education (yay!), but I’m running into a problem.

I’m in the social sciences, so I have a lot of research freedom. My undergrad research was on modern witchcraft practices, and now I want to research how the occult/paranormal can be used to process death and dying, both of which I mentioned in my application essay.

Except, none of the faculty wants to serve as my advisor/committee chair. I’ve gotten a handful of “that sounds cool” or “I can’t wait to see what you find”, but all of them have explicitly stated that they will not serve as my primary mentor. I don’t know what to do, because this was the only Ph.D. program I got into, and I don’t want to lose my progress or go through the application cycle again.

TLDR: struggling to find a graduate advisor because of my “odd” research interests

every time I think about all the crimes the education system has committed I need to close my eyes and take a deep breath. and it did it on purpose, it was made for that. it's still out there telling lies and misinformation and failing young kids so so so hard. i think about it mostly in terms of gender and lgbt rights because that's my field of study, but the list is so heartbreaking long. every time a colleague tells me they don't wanna discuss a topic in class like it's a dead rat i wanna whack them on the head with a blackboard eraser. you ignorant pos that's your job, that's your fucking job!!!! do you have any idea the responsibilities that the job you've committed yourself to doing entails. and fuck the state that isn't standing right there ensuring you get the education you need to properly teach those kids and making sure that their rights are being upheld. i wanna set something on fire

It’s generally been my experience that most people clutch pretty tightly to whatever they “learned” in the elementary-middle-high school triangle, while ignoring the fact that all of that is either outdated (because they don’t understand that science isn’t fixed) or was otherwise simplified to be easier to teach and test (not to mention in the case of social studies/government/history to appease school boards in Texas and California, the two biggest textbook markets).

Most people don’t want to have to reckon with the world being way more complicated than they think.

the thing is that whenever someone says "pluto IS a planet" you don't know if they're actually a space fan who is prepared to love and cherish all the other bodies that would become planets if pluto was promoted again or the dumbest motherfucker on earth who thinks science should have stopped when they left 3rd grade

How is compassion fatigue impacting our teachers? And what can be done to address it?

What is compassion fatigue?

Compassion fatigue is a term for the physical, emotional and psychological impact of helping others who are under stress or experiencing trauma.

While this condition is commonly associated with health care workers, first responders and psychologists, teachers are also at risk.

Compassion fatigue involves two related conditions: burnout and secondary traumatic stress.

Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, de-personalization and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment.

Secondary traumatic stress mirrors symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It occurs when teachers hear about or witness their students' trauma and begin to experience symptoms like emotional numbing, intrusive thoughts or avoidance behaviors."
