Graduation is upon Jason, which means after five long years of study, he's finally ready to run the Gauntlet, the only thing standing between him and the outside world. The Gauntlet's full of demons that want nothing more than to eat his magical core, and he'll be running it solo, since everyone here just sees him as a convenient meat shield.

What could go wrong?

I have no idea what scholomance is, but that sounds really cool! Does JC find a way to use and improve his curse talent anyway?

Scholomance is a YA fantasy trilogy by Naomi Novik with one of the angriest and thus funniest narrators I've ever seen and some very fun 'and see this is how it works' worldbuilding! what's relevant is that school is deadly, cut away from the world, graduation is deadlier than school, and the difference in how deadly things are for the enclavers and the non-enclavers, the haves and the have-nots, is tremendous.

I think JC's going to bite the grim, grim bullet and switch tracks. (Which you could totally argue is stupid and idiotic because he's as I said two years late, but the lack of alchemical affinity plus how dangerous the labs/shop is now that he's no longer an enclaver make keeping on the alchemy track not a great idea either. Sure, he and WWX could cover for one another in the labs/shops, but the fact is that JC is just not good enough an alchemist to cut it as a graduation alliance prospect for an enclaver.) I'm going to assume that there's a schedule change with every semester.

so beginning of junior year, JC and WWX just get the hammer news that there's a war outside, their enclave comprehensively lost, and they have to rework their graduation strategy from the ground up.

JC's going to pivot to incantation over the course of junior year, basically. First semester, he makes himself a monstrosity of a schedule with as almost much alchemy as he's supposed to AND a couple of incantation seminars, like one of those really motivated valedictorian hopefuls (he's not), and basically try to get himself to junior-level in incantations.

Second semester, he hits the brakes on the alchemy and goes full incantations. He's going creative writing, not out of any desire to create, but because pragmatically he thinks his affinity should allow him to put out a range of extremely useful spells for graduation, and he doesn't think he could possibly catch up to the at least five languages language-track juniors would know.

He's doing this while becoming increasingly aware that creative writing would've been a GREAT track for WWX, btw, and despite WWX not switching, he can't help but feel he's being second-best anyway.

Alchemy still stays handy, because JYL was alchemy track, and she gave JC her recipes before leaving the school. They can't sell them because of the war, obviously, but JC's competent enough that he can follow her recipes. JYL really made her affinity work for her, which means provided JC can brew they have infinite supply of not-being-poisoned-in-the-cafeteria, for instance. their rooms are also safe havens against attacks, which is 1)priceless, and 2)a serious affair after Wen Chao's attack.

Scholomance AU

This could be achieved in several ways, buy my idea is an AU where the Vorkosigan setting is overlain with a far-future version of the magical society in Naomi Novik's Scholomance books. A new school that takes students from all over the Nexus has been built, the Scholomance II. Miles, Gregor, Ivan, Elena, and crew are all students together there (compressing their canon ages to make the timeline work). All the adults carry major trauma from having gone through it, except for Cordelia who was raised outside and has different trauma from watching her father be killed by mals to save her.

Gregor is still Emperor; the school, while ridiculously dangerous, is still the best way to keep him alive and they have a complex tactical-political plan to get him through the four years.

...okay, so I just filled up the character limit making an outline. I guess I'm probably writing this one, but the idea is still fair game to anyone else who wants to take a crack at it!

what if

Hexide was more like the Scholomance (the scholomance being a school which is in a literal pocket dimension, you're there from 14 to 18 and oh, most of the students don't make it out bcause monsters are constantly trying to invade the school for to eat wizid meat, some of the rooms don't have walls they have Voids, if you step inside them bye bye. there are monsters of all shapes and sizes, many mimicks

to the point if you try to take a shower without someone there to watch your back you're pretty much dead

also! the space within the school is kinda like illusion magic on steroids. literally powered by belief and intent. like if you and six more are desperately trying to get to class a hallway will get shorter, but if the school feels like fucking with you then it'll make it longer

there are students drawing magic from animals (palismen in this case??) or other people, but since it's dark, dangerous magic they soon start giving off an aura of repulsiveness and others around will know

there's a prision kind of economy, trades and deals and alliances. also the balance between 'Will this help me survive' and 'Will this help me survive and carve my niche outside the school'

there's also social stuff, rich witch kids and people with prominent names in covens/enclaves get better stuff, better preparation

there are no teachers bc the school is somewhat sentient so it kinda notices what you're good at and gives you spells and such based on your affinity and also the subjects you'd like. but if you don't do enough to pass it can literally kill you

you literally can't go home for the entire time you're there. So why do witches and wizards accept that this school is a Thing?

BECAUSE IT'S BETTER THAN THE OUTSIDE

Outside witch kids have 1/20 chances of surviving. Inside the school it's 1/4

So imagine our squad in there.

Hunter as maybe someone without an alliance or something? would he start trying to kill off monsters or keep to himself?

Luz would maybe try to be optimistic about the situation at first. her fantasy expectations would be pretty much shattered

even if you haven't read the scholomance series you have to admit the setting is p cool

if someone's asking why was the school built at all, the Scholomance was built specifically as a way of saying, ‘Well, we’re going to lose a certain percentage of all of our young magic-users anyway, this way we’ll just feed a very small amount of them to the monsters. And therefore, it won’t be like overfishing’.

like, this is not a safe place to send your children, but it is the best chance they’ve got

Mina can no longer tell how the hours pass. She once heeded every chime of the bell from the Exeter cathedral, every tick of the clock while at the platform.

But she counts the moons passed since her Darling had drank from her veins, baptizing himself in her (and thus Its) blood. The day he let their child go (it was noon, but she could still hear his apologies).

If her memories are a distant fog, she still vividly remembers how it was for her after she had tasted the Thing's blood. A death-slumber as the days, hours, minutes, seconds passed before her hard (hadn't someone called them sweet once?) eyes.

It will be fine, in the end, as she will be there for him when he Awakes. So she holds him (like she did in his madness for weeks after their wedding) and waits. The day of Reckoning is not far, now.

Ah, but it will not be the way you foolishly still hope.

She has to still stop herself from dissolving into mist and engulf the source of that hateful, hated voice, talking in her head, always spying when the moon is high.

She quiets it.

I have forbidden speaking to me when I am with my husband.

The silence she forces stays, for a while. Then breaks. Its voice is quieter now, but goes on, indignant.

No matter how many of my old tomes you read, no matter how much you cling to your will, it will matter not, It says. The Thing is upset not at her now but at her Darling. The man who belongs to her.

Once the prodigal son is back, I will do with my little diavol as I see fit, It mocks. Perhaps we ought to tell him of what innocent blood was spilled, (memories of limbs, corpses on snow, hot blood on dripping blade), the sins of your best beloved.

She laughs. The terrible laughter shuts the voice down. Her Darling feels it (she can tell it's like a surge of electricity in his mind) and stirs, and she pets his hair as an apology for disturbing him.

Sins? No.

Everything he does for me is Holy.

Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: Musing on Ages, & Dragon Prep

"Desire" mention - how much does Tensu know of the details of the origin of dungeons? (More than I do, probably...but I know this is thematically important.)

"Us"? Aren't gnomes another long-lived species? Ok this is going to be continuously relevant to the geopolitics so I need to break it down. From the wiki:

Elves: lifespan: 400; adult at 80

Gnomes: lifespan: 240; adult at 40

Dwarves: lifespan: 200; adult at 40

Tallmen: lifespan: 60; adult at 16

Orcs: lifespan: 55; adult at 14

Kobolds: lifespan: 55; adult at 13

Halffoots: lifespan: 50; adult at 14

I see - so really we're dealing with 3 factions: Elves, Gnomes & Dwarves, and Everyone Else. I find it interesting that the longer-lived races reach maturity at 17-20% of their average lifespan, while the younger-lived races all do so at around 25% of their average lifespan. I feel a little like this is a cop-out on the writer's part in trying to keep the ages of maturity a little closer to one another - though of course it's a cultural thing by each race (and, I'm sure, each culture within each race - idk how monolithic the whole comic will treat them, but it would track with the thematic worldbuilding for their to be multiple distinct social groups within each race, even if they do tent to band together against the other races!)

Based on the categories of "long-lived" and "short-lived", the latter seem to view all of the former as much the same - but I'm SURE the Elves have a different view of it, and I'm sure the Dwarves and, as we see here, Gnomes, are very aware of and irritated by the Elves' view.

...and as we see here, and earlier with Chilchuck admitting to being 29 (solidly middle-aged!) and Marcille going, "Aw, so you are a kid!", people rarely make any effort to understand each others relative ages, instead just coasting on their own life-based assumptions.

With reference to above, we can see that Namari at 61 is pretty exactly equivalent to Kaka and Kiki at 20.

Also: this little scene wasn't in the show at all and I love it! Namari in mentor mode!

I love how it's explicitly Shuro's job to get the final killshot, presumably because he has Feats for this (ie, cool-looking moments) as a "real" anime character (Easterner). This literally bears up with what we see of him in the future.

Laios using the Inspiring Leader speech feat! They're all having a Heroes' Feast before fighting the dragon, a classic pre-dragon act for bonus HP and immunity to being Frightened! I know this isn't actually D&D but that post that I think came through my queue earlier today is right: it DOES have the same bones. It's like reading the Locked Tomb and being aware that this author was deep in Homestuck, or Scholomance vis a vis Harry Potter canon and fandom. I know where this writer has been, because I have been there too.

And then the Mage is eventually defeated by all the monsters of the dungeon, and also the poor sane ghosts as well, unionizing against him, and "king" becomes just the title for the Union Rep, whose main job is to honk an airhorn at presumptuous Elves and tell them to fuck off like a Canadian goose.

Wdym TWP isn’t gonna be a princess diaries au where Kieran kidnaps Kit to teach him the etiquette and politics of faerie so that he is able to take on his role as first heir and unite the courts against the big bad so Kit has a full faerie makeover (eyeliner, puffy shirt, leather pants, and all) by the time he reunites with Ty. Ty was sent to find and protect the first heir by the scholomance and so when he reunited with Kit he has to figure out how he fits into the Life of the New Kit.

Meanwhile Ash has finally got the guts to runaway from home (his mom thinks he was kidnapped again) so Ash goes with Janus into New York one day and then splits from him around the institute where he bumps into Dru and Thais (who were leaving after visiting the institute after the Academy) and so they steal a car (Dru has just learned to drive) and go on the run roadtripping across America to LA. Ash gets to have all the great American road trip experiences. Until The Seelie Queen’s people finally catch up with them to bring Ash home to marry his betrothed.

And who is his betrothed? None other than our Kitstopher Herondale. Because the Seelie Queen know that to save faerie they need to unite the courts but she isn’t gonna give up any power without gaining some, so she only agrees to align the Seelie Court with High King Kit but only if her son Ash gets to become High Queen.

So Ash and Kit are going to get married, only two certain Blackthorns have objections to this. (Dru is in faerie now too bc when the Seelie Queens soldiers came for Ash, Ash said he would go peacefully as long as she left Dru and Thais alone) but ofc Dru&Thais are attached to Ash now so they followed him back to faerie soon after. Ash and Kit are allowed to invite their mortal family. It’s the second Herondale-Morgenstern wedding of the year after Jace & Clary’s.

Ash & Kit have their enemies to bromance arc during the betrothal period and they are willing to do this for the sake of faerie (even if their hearts belong to a Blackthorn). Kieran is a proud father.

Only the marriage gets interrupted before the vows because Janus has killed the Seelie Queen and then Jaime suddenly appears out of nowhere and kills Janus.

So suddenly Ash become Queen of Seelie and he’s will to work with Kit & Kieran to save faerie and the shadow world.

And they all live happily ever after

Kit abdicates as High King as soon as he can to follow Ty around the globe uncovering supernatural mysteries with him. He makes Ash his heir so Dru and Ash become High King and High Queen of Faerie and in Ash’s place Helen becomes Queen of Seelie.

And if twp isn’t exactly like this …

Then what’s the point??

So a Girl Genius Scholomance AU is interesting to me because on a character level Agatha is El and Gil is Orion—Agatha very much eschews the path set forward for her as a great evil and instead strives to do the best for her and Her People (notably, she and El share the same “these people are mine, actually, and I will protect them” view of the world that slowly grows to encompass more and more people as time goes on), while Gil struggles to connect with others and is deeply unhappy when doing what is expected of him while eventually going ahead with it anyway. He also has the whole monster hunter vibe going for him. Admittedly, Gil doesn’t struggle in the same way with empathy and connection as Orion does. His is more based on second-guessing others motivations with him, and he does happily and easily make friends—it’s romantic connection that eludes him for the most part.

The fun part is, when you consider their backgrounds the connections to El and Orion completely flip.

Like, Gil and El both have a side of the family that they’re completely alienated from due to bad omens surrounding them, and they were raised in a non-traditional setting by a single parent who strives to do the Right Thing (Klaus and Gwen differ in how good they are at raising kids though lmfao). You can even draw connections back to alienation from their culture—El at least knows where her father came from and speaks the language, but Gil is completely divorced from his mother and doesn’t even know who she is. They’re both barred from participating in their culture for the same reasons they’re alienated from half their family.

Agatha and Orion, meanwhile, were both Created With A Purpose by mothers who range from morally gray to totally corrupt. They both struggled to behave like normal children, with Orion not understanding or valuing human social norms and Agatha’s spark constantly straining to break through. This caused frustration and concern from the adults and mentors around them, and they were both somewhat alienated from their peers. Ophelia and Lucretia both share a certain big picture way of thinking, though admittedly Lucretia’s motives are almost entirely selfish in nature (an interesting contrast with Agatha’s own selfish way of thinking!) and Ophelia’s are pretty damn selfless, though in a very fun way. Selflessness due to ruthlessness is a good way of putting it, and Ophelia very much plays the numbers game in almost the same way the Scholomance itself does.

I’m going to have to play around with this more, because I think the way things line up is fascinating.

Do you know, if you want to lean on JC's daddy issues (obligatory disclaimer) you could have him go alchemy track because JFM assumed JC's affinity is for poisons.

(it's not. It's curses. The kind of really good, really snappy sharp-edged whip-like curses that aren't any more-likely-to-be-liked-by-his-father than poisons, really, so why not try and fulfill that set of fatherly expectations, at least)

So then they lose their enclave, and suddenly JC is here starting junior year (JYL having just graduated, and it's going to be so pleasant for her to stumble outside in the middle of that) and no longer with enclaver status to make up for a frankly stupid choice made two years earlier, and two years too late to switch to incanter track.

And curses is a really nice affinity! Or at least it would be if he'd leaned on it. Someone who'd made better choices back then would definitely have a chance at getting into an alliance simply upon the merits of being a very competent curse caster. But he didn't make good choices and he's got, well, he's not someone with WWX's easy friendliness. People won't exactly line up at his door now he's no longer an enclaver.

First fandom I've been a part of: PJO, back in the sixth grade. there's still some PJO fics I wrote up on ffn.net but shhhh you can't find them. if I hadn't read the lightning thief for sixth grade english, fallen in love with the series, googled Percy Jackson wiki way back in the day, and gone from the Percy Jackson wiki to the Percy Jackson fanfiction wiki (a brave soldier) who knows if or when I would have found fandom??

8. Most obscure fandom: probably the Scholomance Series by Naomi Novik.

All time favorite fanfic....ooooh this is a rough one. difficult. probably impossible actually. in fact yeah it's impossible because there are so many possibilities of what fanfiction can be. but let me share SOME though not all (far from all) of my favorite fics of all time. (there's definitely a recency bias to these as this is mostly what i've read since getting back into HP fandom recently). And so a very very non-exhaustive list of some of my fave fanfics (this is a lot of reading material lol). I've tried to cover a lot of ground in terms of the many possibilities of what fanfic can be.

A Handful of Dust by fluorescentgrey (@yeats-infection on here). this one really pushes the boundaries of what fanfiction can be by taking characters that are referenced like once and creating a richly detailed world around them.

brilliant difficulty by @slashmarks some of the best worldbuilding i've ever seen, including in original fiction lol. historically informed AU but also excellent characterizations. essentially a reimagining of the Harry Potter series starting in GoF that has worldbuilding which actually makes sense.

The Last Enemy: The Howling Nights by @chdarling-tle a really good jily fic that does an excellent job as a prequel to the main series (again a great use of the fanfiction form).

The Changeling by @annerbhp need to reread but this is one of the all time greats. an excellent and richly characterized alternate look at the canon series. made me love Ginny forever. the sequel series called the armistice series is also truly excellent.

March Hare by @copper-dust this is much shorter than the others so a good place to start. It's a really really excellent example of one of the great uses of fanfic: missing moments that add depth to main characters. really amazing Hermione characterization.

Bellatrix Black: An Elegy by @thistlecatfics also short like the previous rec, but an example of a different kind of missing moment in that in a pretty short span it gives an immense richness and depth to characters who are pretty flat or barely present in the main canon. a masterclass in how to build 3D characters around canon details.

Heal Thyself by @astolat because it wouldn't be a 'greatest fanfiction of all time' list without them, and this is one of the great drarry fics with some amazing worldbuilding which I now can't unsee.

˖  some clarifying lore on fae and their relation to gods.... within the confines of this au the fae are considered very very distant offspring of pagan gods across multiple pantheons although there are some exceptions, such as various minor gods, even the aspects of some major gods are considered to be fae. they represent older powers enduring through they have shifted form significantly and even gained qualities of their own ( like the rule of truths and the power of names ━ though this is a principle that most gods still adhere to today ) the land beyond the veil is also know as the mirror realm, where the world seems to work backwards though it runs parallel to that of our own. there are no countries though there are borders to define sovereignties and courts.

zoya is technically an unseelie fae and is a direct descendant of a union between a lamia monster and the slavic sky god perun. her bloodline carries both divinity as well as the wicked nature of the great serpent. she is the daughter of the drakon knight juris who served under the former unseelie queen before he defected to create a court of his own.

˖࿔ the ethereal court, zoya's home; is for fae with more infernal qualities and animalistic features ━ they are typically reptilian folk, with an affinity for weather enchantments though they will allow other kinds of fae to swear fealty once trust is earned. the court's name is no coincidence as the confines of the ethereal lands are sky-bound ━ the kingdom is nestled atop high mountain peaks and in the clouds themselves. 

while not on the best terms with the other fae as a whole the court typically has the strategic advantage given its location. this is why it comes as shock when their king is found dead within the walls of the sky palace. struck down by poison delivered by a spy from the spring court at the command of their queen, elizaveta. it is revealed that elizaveta's prized general and fellow high fae had an affair with juris which was how zoya was sired. this dalliance was considered a direct act of betrayal to the crown and the spring queen's retaliation came in the form of regicide while zoya's mother is still at large.

˖࿔ the single act calls into question zoya's legitimacy as an heiress to the throne as her people have no way of knowing if she has ties to the spring court because of her mother. members of her court speculate their princess possibly having a hand in her father's murder given her past violences though have no definitive proof of such.

in an effort to solidify her claim and birthright zoya agrees to go to war with the spring court in order to ascend to the throne as queen. currently, she is in the process of gathering allies, scouring the wild lands and seasonal courts alike but she is a young and tenacious monarch ━ and to many a symbol of unchecked power and potential ruin. while the ethereal court readies for war the other folk take note of their crumbling line of succession.

zoya's kingdom is vulnerable on all fronts and even if she finds out the whereabouts of her mysterious mother it may not be enough to put the matter to rest without bloodshed. not to mention, zoya herself is a vengeful drakon with far too much magic at the tips of her fingers than she knows what to do with. a newly crowned sovereign entirely unchecked and brimming with fresh grief in her heart there is little she will not do in the name of her fallen father.

the ethereal court expanded lore; they are a fringe court, not to mention fairly new. they are not as respect as the older more established faerie factions but they are feared for their sheer power. it is this fact alone that makes the other courts eager to appease them to avoid any form of retaliation.

environment; the ethereal court is situated high in the mountains and amidst the clouds. not many other fae can survive in the conditions of this court due to lack of oxygen as well as the air pressure. there are certain rooms that are affixed with enchantments that allow other kinds of fae a place for respite in their kingdom but they are few, as they aren't a court that entertains guests often.

growing up as a beast; zoya has spent her life as a dragon in this verse. she has a humanoid glamour that she employs when interacting with folk outside of her court but it isn't a guise she is used to nor wears often. ethereal fae are easily among the most monstrous of the courtly fae so much so that their presence is not wildly accepted at high court

plotting; easiest way to interact with zoya within this verse is to present your muse as a potential ally to her cause or even a potential spring court sympathizer. i welcome both amiable and antagonistic relationships here or even relationships of convenience which a wartime setting is ripe for.

acotar muses; i really have no interest in writing within the confines of sjm's lore. i feel like all the problems with her work have been talked to death but since her work largely dominates faerie-based stories these days it begs repeating that i am wary of characters from sjm books. i also don't really plan on making this verse fit within the confines of that series in any shape or form .

I feel like grown up Tavvy Blackthorn is def an LA surfer boy

None of his older siblings were— but helen&mark were preoccupied with their younger siblings till they went away, julian was as well and also obvi wouldn’t go somewhere Emma can’t follow, similarly Livvy wouldn’t pursue something that Ty wouldn’t follow & Dru had her thing, plus her siblings didn’t do it so even if they lived in LA she wasn’t rly interested

But I think Tavvy is a surfer boy and he starts bc of Aline. Like for Helen LA is coming home, but for Aline LA is all new and she wants to try all the things like surfer (plus she grew up in landlocked Idris so the ocean is very exciting)

So Aline signs up for surfing lessons, and she gets Tavvy to sign up to now that it’s mainly just Dru and Tavvy at the Institute but Dru is getting ready to go to the Academy and since Tavvy is still 8/9 so he can’t yet fully start shadowhunter training, Aline thinks it would be good for Tavvy to have something that is His Thing.

So Aline and Tavvy take surfing lessons and Tavvy really likes it. It’s nice for him having something that’s his own unique to his siblings.

And so Tavvy begins hi surfer boy era. It stresses out Julian quite a bit when he comes home from England but he sees how much fun Tavvy is having.

And I just feel like out of all the Blackthorns growing up in LA one of them has gotta be a surfer boy hehe. (I could see surfer livvy in an au where she lives and Ty still goes to the scholomance and while he’s away Livvy gets close to Cameron and learns to surf but alas 😔)
