I occasionally wish to reach out to old friends/acquaintances I haven't spoken to since high school/some other even earlier time in my life, but I have SOOO little social energy even for required tasks (like making dr phone calls or etc), I never have any leftover for extra ones, and it would be very odd to message someone I haven't spoken to in like 5 years out of the blue but then take 4 entire months to respond back lol.. My natural curiosity with nostalgia/collecting details of the past/etc. (literally if I were born a little earlier I would definitely do scrapbooking or something lol) is very strong, but, alas, not strong enough to beat out the Social Issues Demons apparently
#facebook always does that 'here's a post from this day 8 years ago' thing. and I see old comments interacting#with people and it's so like.. OOOOO~~ where are they now?? what's going on? how much have they changed as people?#how much are they the same? this is fascinating. i should contact them!!' but then it's like... take that to it's logical conclusion though#you would contact them and then IF they even responded it would take you 80 years to respond and then they would#think there was something wrong or that you were trying to be insulting or something. To contact anyone I need to include an 85 page#disclaimer of all of my social issues & mental illness things. 'If i take 3 weeks to reply I promise it has nothing to do with u' etc lol#THIS is why more people need to be into phone calls/voice calls/some form of audio real time communication/etc.#I think one of the main things that's hard about messaging through text for me is it's so unscheduled and open ended#(plus it takes forever if you're talking about anything in detail and gets very long very quickly)#because like you can send a message and then just get a reply whenever. and then you're expected to reply back whenever#so it's like you never know when the response will come or when a new obligation to reply can come up? so it's like this sudden thing with#no outline?? if that makes sense. whereas a phone call is very like 'hello let's schedule a call from 10am - 2pm on thursday'. And you know#EXACTLY when the interaction will start and EXACTLY when it will end and you can plan around it in your schedule easily.#I have the reverse thing of a lot of people (how people don't pick up phone calls/hate calls/only text)#I would literally talk on the phone with a stranger. I would have a discord voice chat with someone I barely know.#if someone I hardly even remember from elementary school asked to have a voice call with me out of nowhere I would do it.#but if a stranger MESSAGED me?? or someone I barely know sent me a TEXT or something?? I will never reply probably#It's just too vague and weird. and you can't read voice tone over text. and the interaction could last forever with no clear end#point and etc. etc. But a call is like. set. established. clear boundaries. you can read the flow of conversation better. rapport. etc. etc#I get that I guess people feel more anonymous or distanced over text?? but you can have fake phone numbers on the computer. or do like disc#rd calls. or zoom without a camera or etc. etc. Also the distance that's present in text is BAD distance because it just means that tone is#not conveyed properly and you will never truly get a sense of the person's conversational vibe or mannerisms or how well you really click.#ANYWAY ghgjh...... I'm so so so interested in concepts of like.. How did that one kid I used to talk to in elementary school#but then they moved away in 5th grade - how did they end up? what are they doing now?? etc. etc. Like despite the severe social anhedonia#and general lack of connection with others I'm just really fascinated in like.. idk. the human development of it all and like#the concept of how we're actually a million different people through the course of our lives ever evolving in different iterations and etc.#PLUS again. i love nostalgia. sometimes old peple you know might remember a shared memory or can tell you about something you forgot#or etc. like it's SUCH A COOL THING in CONCEPT but I am too socially inept generally speaking lol. which people I still talk to today are#familiar with my 'phone call once every few months' communication style. but strangers would just be like... wtf. And I don't blame them#Sure I literally cannot change the physical health + brain issues i have - but also I know enough to not put others through that lol

Have you been loving #WeeJohnWondays! Would you like to give something back?
Kristian sets up WeeJohnWondays on his own, without pay, without studio support, arranging guests and navigating both the chat and a discord to find and ask relevant questions. He's absolutely lovely and has even promised that although there's only one week left of the show airing on BBC due to the new double-billed schedule, he's going to have two more weeks of WeeJohnWondays - one with Con and Gypsy and one with David Jenkins.
To thank Kristian for all the hard work he does for WJW, there is a fundraiser going on for Kristian Nairn's charity of choice, TeamHAVEN, which provides meals to folks in need in Northern Ireland. You can find the fundraiser here:
Last year this fundraiser raised a little over £3000. This year the goal is £5000.
TeamHAVEN is a small team tackling a big need in Northern Ireland. Their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/teamhavenbelfast) posts near-daily updates on the folks they serve. Recently they're reporting big crowds in wet, chilly weather. If you read through their updates you can get a sense for how deeply they care about their community. This is a crew for whom even £10 can make a difference.

I don't know if you'll answer but I need to know the lore behind sexy times with Wangxian, like is it a fanfic? why do people hate the author??
It was the longest mdzs fic posted during its time in 2021 and gained extreme notoriety for its absurdly long tag list, frequent update schedule that consistently forced anyone scrolling any of its tags to see it at the top of their page, and escalating poor, racist, and trolling authorial behavior that ultimately culminated in the author virtual1979 being suspended from ao3 for a month because she posting an author's note saying she hoped that all her haters would contract covid and die. She deleted the fic from ao3 a little while after this happened, ig bc she wasn't getting enough attention anymore, but allegedly the thing's still up on dreamwidth under strict friendslock. The fan lore article goes pretty in depth about it:
The best summary for why it pissed people off so much is really just showing you these screenshots of what the fic looked like towards the end of its life on desktop and mobile (be warned opening the full image):
From my personal experience:
from 2019 up until around 2021 the fic really was just a normal-ish, if very strangely written and kinky, wangxian porn fic about them basically just fucking around post canon and enjoying day to day life. It updated pretty frequently and had a fair amount of tags because the author was literally just tagging anything that she wrote. But like the first few hundred, maybe even a thousand tags were pretty accurate to what the fic was because of that, and were relatively manageable for the first few years that it didn't pick up any attention really.
At some point in 2021 when cql was really starting to blow up online and the tag count was starting to pile up to the point of annoyance, the fic started receiving some comments that were just like "hey can you try to cut down on tags, I don't think it's necessary to be so specific as to tag 'Korean food' or 'eggs' or whatnot". The author did not share this idea, evidently, and instead built a grudge against commenters who would tell her to delete tags, subsequently adding more and more as time went on.
As the tag count and updates increased, the content of the fic did too-- it got a lot, lot weirder. I'm sure someone's saved it all somewhere but for reference it spun out into what I can only describe as like if Rick and Morty's plot was cut to be just the parts of the show with underage/incest plotlines with All Tomorrows level sex dystopian world building exclusively to elicit the most visceral audience reaction possible. Around this time is when more people started to notice the fic and its escalating tag issues, leading them to leaving more comments complaining about it, leading to the attention seeking author spitefully adding more tags. Around this time is when she also started adding fake tags that didn't apply to the story whatsoever (sorry to disappoint, "talking vagina" was one of those. I did check) just to boost the count, take up more space on people's screens, and bait people into commenting hate for attention.
By this time, it had become a fandom-wide annoyance as she had begun to tag entirely unrelated ships, therefore putting the near-daily updating titanic of a fic at the top of any mdzs-related tag. People were outraged about this, and calls came for ao3 to step in. Ao3 waffled around for a bit as there was no official rule at the time that imposed a tag limit, so there wasn't established ground to ban virtual1979 (who btw many people suspected of being 40 whole years old due to the username and allegedly some other internet sleuthing on Facebook or something). Meanwhile, she began to tag other fandoms-- tgcf, svsss, BTS, basically anything that would get a lot of attention and draw hate with the advent of The Monstrosity suddenly drowning out all other recently updated fics of the targeted fandoms.
People had been trying to retaliate without ao3 action, though, by coding their own themes/skins that would allow someone to block a user or work and other fic writers made their own parody, the "bland times with wangxian" collection, which were minimally tagged sfw shortfics typically featuring wangxian just doing laundry or things like that. A good amount of them were actually like just fics where wwx would explain to lwj how to install custom ao3 themes and block fics that were taking up too much space on his screen. Imo it was pretty funny, but these also sparked some controversy as people disagreed with fighting annoyance with more annoyance to people trying to find content.
Either shortly before or after ao3 staff said they'd step in due to an insane amount of reports and backlash, I forgot which atp, virtual1979 began perhaps the worst tagging spree of the fic's life by changing the title, many of the tags, and the summary to a slew of racial slurs, sexually explicit imagery, and other generally offensive statements. I'm pretty sure this came after the fic was temporarily hidden once, as this update gained considerably less attention than the rest of the tagging saga, but people were still rightfully pissed about it. Ultimately, like I mentioned before, the author was then suspended for a month for wishing covid and death on her haters, and attention seemed to die down during this time to the point where she didn't really fight much more when her suspension ended and deleted her account and the work shortly after. Again she seems to have moved to dreamwidth, but most have forgotten her and I'm not sure if her presence is public at all on there. But that's the story of the worst mdzs fic ever written

A Guide to Our Direct Services
Got a sexuality, gender, sexual health, or relationships question? We got you!
We have four free, direct support services so you can get one-on-one help if you can't find what you need on the website, if you you need or want more information, if you need help understanding something you've read here, or when you want support, help, advice or discussion from our staff, volunteers or peer community.
Our message boards: you'll need to register if you're not already registered for the boards; you can do that here. (We welcome contributions and responses from community members!)
Our SMS (text) service: you can text us at (206) 866-2279. The SMS service is free, but message and data rates apply, just like with any texts you send or receive to or from anyone. Per mobile restrictions, the SMS service is only available for users in the United States.
Our online chat (does not require registration): During chat times or with appointments (see under the cut).
The advice column queue (does not require registration)
(Not sure which you should choose? Find more information under the cut)
Scarleteen is a diverse, inclusive space where we are strongly and actively committed to making and keeping a space that feels as safe as possible for everyone, and which honors the diversity of human sexuality and identity. We welcome users of all gender identities, belief systems, ethnicities, economic classes, relationship constructs, and languages. We ask everyone here to work together to co-create and help nurture such an inclusive space, where often very loaded topics are discussed, by following and respecting the user policies and guidelines.
Which of our services should you choose?
The message boards:
Use for: Almost anything, be it simple questions or in-depth, involved discussions over time. This service is also best for when you want both staff and volunteer engagement AND discussion with peers, or primarily peer-to-peer discussion.
How fast will you be answered? Anywhere from a few minutes to within 24 hours. If you're a brand new user, your posts will not show up immediately on the boards: they go to a moderation queue staff review for a little bit first, so we can better screen for trolls or spammers.
Hablamos español: Tenemos voluntarios disponibles para los usuarios de habla hispana.
The SMS service:
Use for: Help finding content on the site to answer your questions, referrals for in-person local services like sexual or mental healthcare, or a referral to our message boards or live chat when you can't figure out which service is best for you. The SMS service is not intended for answers that can be found in our site content, or can be answered or discussed on the boards or via the live chat service.
How fast will you be answered? Within a few hours to 24 hours.
Hablamos español: Tenemos voluntarios disponibles para los usuarios de habla hispana.
The chat service:
(A real-time popup chat window, staffed and seen only by you and our staff and volunteers. It works like an IM conversation or Facebook chat.)
Use for: Sex, sexuality, sexual health and relationship questions, help, support and referrals. This service does require your immediate and full attention, so if you want to be able to come and go throughout a conversation, especially with lapses of several minutes, hours or days, or want to multitask, the boards or SMS service should be used instead.
Monday: 10 AM - 1PM PST and 1 pm-3 pm PST
Friday: 8:30 - 11:30 AM PST
Saturday: 8 - 10 AM PST
If you want a chat at a time it isn't scheduled, you can always come to the message boards and see if any staff are available and ask. We're currently in the midst of making some changes to our schedule, so the current schedule should be considered temporary. You may also sometimes see the available chat icon -- a red S in a small yellow circle floating over the lower left of every site page -- outside of chat hours if and when staff are available for chat at times other than our set hours, and are welcome to come into chat anytime you see that icon.
The advice columns:
(The index of the advice columns is here, to give you a sense of the kind of engaged, professional and in-depth answers it provides.)
Best for: More involved, complex situations where you want a longer, in-depth answer, but can wait days, weeks or even months for your answer. Questions and situations which are NOT time-sensitive (like pregnancy risks or scares, current health problems, or help you need to find as soon as possible). Questions and answers you are comfortable having published widely for all to see (even though they should not ever contain any identifying information where anyone reading could know it was you asking).
How fast will you be answered? As noted on the input form, most advice questions will never be answered, particularly if we've already written a column that has already answered a question. Otherwise, the wait can be anywhere from a day or two to several months. The advice column is intended for longer, in-depth answers to issues that are not particularly time sensitive or immediate. It is acceptable to leave your question in the queue, but then also bring to another of our direct services for a more immediate and guaranteed answer.

you and pre-outbreak!joel's social media accounts
As a young dad, I feel like joel would actually have a good knowledge of how to use his phones and social media. He'd probably have a facebook and instagram account. Obviously, he wouldn't be posting consistently though due to his busy work schedule, but he when he does post it would be of you or his babies ofc ❤️🥺
I'd imagine he'd have a pretty private instagram account with just friends and family following, his account is just so he can post cute pictures of his family lol
He'd probably post the cutest pictures of ellie and sarah, he's such a proud papa. He'd put captions like "my babygirl sleeping just like her daddy" or "ellie girl all snuggled up with her lil lamb" and other cute things lol.
He'd also post you ofc, you're his girl!! Especially for anniversaries and birthdays, always saying how much he loves you and how lucky he is to have such an amazing and loving wife and how much you do for him and ellie and sarah.
Every time you post a family picture or you with your babies or individual pictures of ellie and sarah he sometimes comments when he's on his phone during lunch breaks. You post a picture of ellie all dressed up in the cutest little outfit and you put something like "little ellie all ready to go run errands with mommy! 🥰🥰" and he comments "my precious little baby girl ❤️"
And then any pictures of selfies you post of yourself you know DAMN well your man is gonna comment being like "🤤🤤🤤 I have the hottest wife on the planet" LMAO or more wholesome things like "looking beautiful as always ❤️ love you" i'd be blushingggg
With your instagram on public though, you'd probably go viral after posting pictures of your man and get tons of comments saying things like "is her husband single?" "that man is so fine" "daddy" (which you're like !!! 😳 to) "he's so hot 😍" and at first you were like 🤨😾 bc who are all these random girls talking about how hot your man is on YOUR own page! But that quickly goes away bc you know he only has eyes for you ❤️ and you are both very secure in your relationship
It also doesn't hurt to do a couple of posts with the two of you to make sure people know you are both very happy together and in love lol, gotta make remind everyone once in a while that he's your man 😌
So you post pictures of you going out for date night looking hot af like the power couple you are. Or pictures of you relaxing at home and cuddling.
You'd probably also get a bunch of comments sayin how hot his southern accent is lol.
Joel would probably get a little flustered at all the attention tbh lol, what a cutie
From then on you sometimes post lil thirst traps of him LOL filming him just walking around shirtless or doing things in the yard or fixing things. Ofc you'd put some of those trending tiktok audios for thirst traps
Joel being the sweetie that he is would go along with all the trends you wanna do lol

Some really good notes from my post courtesy of @margridarnauds about that person accidentally using a white nationalist slogan to support the Welsh language:
I know someone who is doing a PhD on the Far Right and the co-option of cultural movements and these tags are bang on. Its the difference between a healthy nationalism and an unhealthy nationalism. A lot of this goes for Irish nationalism as well as it does for Welsh nationalism.
There's nothing wrong with (and arguably a lot right with) minority language preservation. It can be used for great good (strengthens community ties, preserves culture) but if co-option is not guarded against readily, it can also be used for great evil (see: using minority language struggles as an argument against immigration, for example).
The Far Right sees the cultural preservation of anything (white) and it's like a bat signal. These things are magnets for white supremacists and assorted fascists of all kinds. Which is why it is so goddamn important to be vigilant against people like that hijacking your movement.
I see a worrying amount of Welsh nationalists use (accidentally or not) the language of the far right to argue for Welsh language preservation. It can be as innocuous as advocating for a Welsh Academie Francaise to as obvious as insinuating that Wales must be kept "ethnically" Welsh in order to keep out foreign influence on the language. I see this go unchecked all the time in various Facebook groups for Welsh independence (most of which I've left since admins of these pages either don't know or don't care that people use their groups to share these sentiments).
Nationalism ≠ Fascism - but if you don't keep an eye on the company you're keeping, any well-meaning nationalist/independence or language preservation movement can be hijacked to promote hate. I only know a scant amount because I was only vaguely considering joining Yes Cymru a few years before they all went sideways (but I remember Owen Exie Hurcum talking about this on Twitter at the time) but the leadership of Yes Cymru began to squeeze out minorities from the group- nonwhite folks, gay people, trans people etc. Whole thing put me off from joining. I don't remember the full details but from the testimonies of others, the group was hijacked and steered into a reactionary way of being. Considering a large amount of Welsh nationalists also idolise groups like the FWA (Free Wales Army - a Welsh nationalist group formed in 1963 which tried to emulate the IRA in Ireland, with little success- mostly just playing paramilitary dress up) - whose symbol is this flag:
Even if the flag itself is based on Welsh folklore and is supposedly an entirely innocent, non fash design- it still is like a beacon to the Far Right who will take any amount of symbolic validation as a cue to join your movement and derail it for their own ends.
Which is why Celtic scholars, people with casual interest in Celtic languages and/or their respective cultures and civic nationalists alike need to be vigilant against those who would co-opt the field for their own twisted hate campaign.
So, one final thought,
Returning to my original post responding to that American chiming into Welsh politics from overseas. Please PLEASE be careful when wading into politics that isn't yours. Where the Far Right are involved, it doesn't take much to cause a dumpster fire - if you aren't 'on the ground' with these issues so to speak, you aren't in the firing line if your comments go sideways and enable/provoke the Far Right in this country.
If you have an interest in Celtic languages, countries and politics- you have a duty to be responsible with what you do and say. This isn't to say that you cannot engage with these topics- but that you should exercise caution lest you accidentally worsen an already delicate situation.
This has been your regularly scheduled Celtic anti-fascist tedtalk. Please reblog to make sure more people become aware of how delicate things can be and how to prevent fascists from getting a foothold in this field. Thank you.

TORPEDO BLISTERS (COMPLETE) - The new torpedo blisters are a slightly different design and square off at the bottom below the waterline. This design change will make the new blisters easier to maintain increasing their longevity.
PAINT - The ship has been coated in a black primer from stern to bow (PPG SIGMA SHIELD 880 GF). Some areas have been top coated as more layers are applied. NAVY BLUE 5-N has been applied to the hull. Touch up has begun on hard to reach areas.
The old and faded blue paint (on the turrets) vs a fresh coat of Navy Blue 5-N.
HULL NUMBER (COMPLETE) - The new hull numbers have been extensively researched so each number is not only the correct font, but applied in the appropriate position it was in 1945. The numbers have been applied to both bow and stern.
New 1945 hull numbers!
SHIP’S NAME APPLIED (COMPLETE) - The lettering for the ship’s name has been cut from steel plate and has been attached to both sides of the stern. A ton of work and research went into getting the correct font and positioning.
COATING (COMPLETE) - The inside of the blisters, and the ship’s hull will be coated to protect against possible corrosion.
TANK CLEANING (COMPLETE) - Tanks inside the ship are being inspected, cleaned, and repaired if need be. Some will be coated with a marine coating to help prevent future corrosion.

Mullions (for the windows that will be added back) are starting to be installed.
SPLASH! - The ship will be put back into the water in late February 2024, but is dependent on the weather.

this is an absolutely insane question, but what does your accent sound like?
(have autism) (would like to read your posts in "your voice") (thought you were American) (now confused)
Not insane at all, quite understandable!
As it happens, you can find recordings of my voice in quite a few places on the internet, including
My podcast, The SquaMates Podcast (off air for more than a year and a half now, due to crazy schedules and life events, but there are many hours to be listened to anyway)
My YouTube dissection series, AnatomyInsights (behind schedule, like the rest of my life, but we're working on it)
My TikTok (I am bad at this, as you will soon see, but I hope to find time to work on it)
Sometimes I do Facebook or Instagram live videos, mostly when I am measuring frogs
Various guest appearances on podcasts, e.g. The Chameleon Academy Podcast, New Species Podcast
And I've done a few TV and radio interviews; an exhausting but not exhaustive list of media appearances or coverage of my work can be found on the Media page of my website.
You will quite quickly learn that my accent is wholly fucked, but has an American flavour to it because I lived in the US in my early childhood, but a largely British vocabulary (and spelling) because the rest of my life has been in Europe, very often among Brits. I am also an accent sponge, and tend to mirror other people's accents when speaking to them, which can get quite awkward.

any tips on finding a roommate? My partner and i are moving in with a friend and would like another roommate to help ease the financial stress?
most of the roommates i've had have been friends who were also looking for housing, but if you are queer sometimes there are facebook groups for queer housing in whatever city you live in. you can post the apartment or house if you already have it, details about it and yourselves, and ask if anyone is looking.
i also highly recommend, unless you are absolutely desperate and will take anyone, having a sort of 'interview' with potential housemates before making any permanent decisions. i typed up a bunch when my roommate (as of december) and i were talking about moving in, and they were very straightforward and helpful. you can probably go through them with your partner and friend first to make sure everyone's on the same page, then present them to potential roommates to see who you would all get along with best. you don't have to be besties, but agreeing on basic stuff is very helpful. you can pick and choose and edit whatever works for and is relevant to you.
guests
how often do you have guests over?
how often do you have overnight guests?
how would we handle extended guests (like friends visiting from out of town for a week and sleeping on the couch)?
keeping any sex in bedrooms only, are you ok with that?
schedule/noise
do you usually shower at night or in the morning?
what’s your work schedule? do you work from home?
what time is “quiet time” for you?
what time is too early to be making noticeable noise?
chores
what are your cleaning habits?
how clean do you want/need/expect common spaces to be?
what chores do you hate?
what chores do you actually enjoy?
how do you prefer to split up chores? do you prefer to rotate or keep the same chores consistently?
food/household supplies n shit
how often do you cook full meals?
do you have any dietary restrictions that would require special dishes that can't be contaminated (kosher, celiac, allergies, etc)?
would housemates be interested in sharing things that go bad quickly, like milk or produce?
how to split stuff like toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc?
furniture/appliances/decor/general house stuff/etc
what stuff do you already have that you for sure want to keep/use?
ideal indoor temperature?
if you are planning on buying furniture, will you be splitting it between all housemates, or will each individual housemate contribute their own furniture? (it is easier to handle individual ownership when you move out, but it can be financially easier if you have to buy a lot of furniture to split it then when you move out whoever takes that piece of furniture would just reimburse the other housemates)
decor style?
do you have pets?
communication
communication style?
conflict resolution style?
how best to make a request?
how do you handle when you are frustrated with your roommate?
logical or illogical pet peeves?
i'm sure there's more that didn't make it onto this list, so anyone who has suggestions please reblog with them!

== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies. I hope your Monday wasn't too crazy! I'm gonna keep it short tonight because I am nodding off.
I know sometimes we do things when we're not feeling very well that we regret. I know sometimes we get so far progress wise, but then we revert a little bit because the day was just too much. Sometimes we even say or do things that hurt others, even if we don't mean to, but it happens.
Just remember lovelies that that doesn't make you a bad person.
We all make mistakes. We are all human, and none of us are infallible.
You are going through so much. You are dealing with the stressors of the day, of the week, of the year, of the country, of the global climate, hell you're dealing with the stressors of keeping you and your loved ones fed, and clothed and sheltered, or maybe you're dealing with a physical ailment.
Whatever it is, you're dealing with A LOT. We all have bad days.
Making mistakes is how we grow. Give yourself some grace lovelies, you deserve grace too.
Anyway, that's enough out of me, goodnight crew, I hope your dreams are sweet, and your rest is full.

As a public librarian whose own library’s marketing is, not to put too fine a point on it, garbâge, I have to ask: How did y’all manage to get a tumblr account?? Our communications dept would *never* let us be that cool.
It went kind of like 'Hey. We should do more reader's advisory. It's great social media *checks notes* uh, content. Should be a blog since it's long form writing. No, I can manage it, it fits in my task list. Have you heard of Tumblr? No? Well it would be perfect, and it's free. Approved? Greatthanksbye!'
And then I ran and they haven't caught me yet.
Much longer answer under the cut, in case you're looking for tips to convince coms ⬇️
I'm the person who manages all of our online marketing, so I really only had to ask the director. The words "I'll manage it myself, no additional staff time" were also magical since... well, I'm the social media manager, they know I'm good for it (and that I'm not going to post something the library is going to have to make an embarrassed press release about later.)
The way I made the case for tumblr was by saying it's a spot to host staff recs/reviews that's not character limited, and we can link back to it from all of our other social media platforms. Our website isn't set up for blog-style posts so making a new page every time we wanted to rec a book would be hugely obnoxious. Plus tumblr's tagging system aids in discovery (you know, in theory) in a way our website couldn't.
Even if our book rec posts don't get many notes here on tumblr (they don't, with a few exceptions) posts with links back to tumblr do pretty well on our other platforms. So our benchmarking for tumblr doesn't look great on its own but it does improve our stats elsewhere, so it's worth keeping on - especially since the overhead on staff time is very low. Staff send in their book recs and reviews when they have something to say and a little time to write it up, no strict schedule or deadlines. I take care of all the formatting, proofreading, graphics, scheduling, and tagging myself.
Obviously we're doing more than just our rec posts - reblogging and answering asks and replying to posts where relevant, plus the occasional one-off non-book-rec post. Which is all, you know. Just being on tumblr. Gotta do our bit to keep the tumblr ecosystem healthy. If you want to convince a marketing department that's worthwhile, then it's raising brand awareness.
(Plus I really like tumblr and keeping the social media manager happy when she has to spend eight hours a day looking at the kind of nonsense people say to libraries on Facebook other social media sites is worth its weight in gold, though I may be biased. But getting to manage the tumblr at work is sort of like an oasis in my day.)
And then sometimes Neil Gaiman reblogs an addition we made on his post and suddenly everyone at work is very excited that someone has kept up the tumblr for all these years :D

Hey my dude is the effin birds FB actually you?
I have a Facebook page for Effin' Birds, it's https://www.facebook.com/effinbirds
I schedule comics to it when I'm adding stuff to other platforms, though I rarely post directly or find myself in the comments. There are also posts from the nice folks that run my store.
I was a little more active there last week because I added most of my 2024 appearances as Facebook events.
I know there are a lot of imitators and fakes out there. I keep an updated list at effinbirds.com under "read the comic".
If you find fakes out there, please send an email to [email protected].

“A Great Loss:” Saxophonist David Sanborn Dies at 78
Saxophonist David Sanborn, who recorded smooth jazz as a solo artist and toured and recorded with David Bowie, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan and others as a sideman, has died.
“May the great David Sanborn rest in love and peace,” Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
Sanborn, 78, died May 12 of complications from prostate cancer, said a post on his Facebook page. The saxophonist had continued performing since his 2018 diagnosis and “already had concerts scheduled into 2025,” the post read.
“David Sanborn was a seminal figure in contemporary pop and jazz music,” the announcement read. “It has been said that he put the saxophone back into rock ‘n’ roll.”
Fernando Perdomo echoed this sentiment, crediting Sanborn with “defin(ing) the sax’s role in pop and rock in the ’70s and ’80s.”
Questlove recalled being “floored” by a Sanborn show in Colorado, where the saxophonist made the drummer “feel like a complete amateur” despite playing an instrument that requires a significant amount of oxygen at altitude.
“He told me that since being diagnosed with cancer, he got a renewed vigor … and decided henceforth to play like his life depended on it,” Questlove said. “Amen, David. Rest in melody.”
Sanborn played Woodstock with the Butterfield Blues Band and went on to a career that included more than two dozen solo albums, gigs with the “Late Night with David Letterman” and “Saturday Night Live” bands and collaborations with Bowie, Rundgren, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, B.B. King, Maynard Ferguson, Linda Ronstadt, Elton John and others.
“RIP, David S.,” Eric Clapton said.
The members of Spyro Gyra found themselves “shocked and beyond sad” at the news, while band leader Jay Beckenstein eulogized Sanborn as “a truly great saxophonist and musician, one of the most influential of my lifetime and an artist who had an extraordinary ability to play emotionally.
“Whatever he touched, whether jazz, gospel or pop, his approach was beautiful and powerful,” Beckenstein said. “A great loss."

Ahmaud Arbery's murder: Four years later Ahmaud Arbery's murder: Four years later 05:29
Attorneys are asking a U.S. appeals court to throw out the hate crime convictions of three White men who used pickup trucks to chase Ahmaud Arbery through the streets of a Georgia subdivision before one of them killed the running Black man with a shotgun.
A panel of judges from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta was scheduled to hear oral arguments Wednesday in a case that followed a national outcry over Arbery's death. The men's lawyers argue that evidence of past racist comments they made didn't prove a racist intent to harm.
On Feb. 23, 2020, father and son Greg and Travis McMichael armed themselves with guns and drove in pursuit of Arbery after spotting the 25-year-old man running in their neighborhood outside the port city of Brunswick. A neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, joined the chase in his own truck and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael shooting Arbery in the street.
More than two months passed without arrests, until Bryan's graphic video of the killing leaked online and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case from local police. Charges soon followed.
In legal briefs filed ahead of their appeals court arguments, lawyers for Greg McMichael and Bryan cited prosecutors' use of more than two dozen social media posts and text messages, as well as witness testimony, that showed all three men using racist slurs or otherwise disparaging Black people. The slurs often included the use of the N-word and other derogatory terms for Black people, according to an FBI witness who examined the men's social media pages. The men had also advocated for violence against Black people, the witness said.
Bryan's attorney, Pete Theodocion, said Bryan's past racist statements inflamed the trial jury while failing to prove that Arbery was pursued because of his race. Instead, Arbery was chased because the three men mistakenly suspected he was a fleeing criminal, according to A.J. Balbo, Greg McMichael's lawyer.
Greg McMichael initiated the chase when Arbery ran past his home, saying he recognized the young Black man from security camera videos that in prior months showed him entering a neighboring home under construction. None of the videos showed him stealing, and Arbery was unarmed and had no stolen property when he was killed.
Prosecutors said in written briefs that the trial evidence showed "longstanding hate and prejudice toward Black people" influenced the defendants' assumptions that Arbery was committing crimes.
"All three of these defendants did everything they did based on assumptions — not on fact, not on evidence, on assumptions. They make decisions in their driveways based on those assumptions that took a young man's life," prosecutor Linda Dunikoski said in court in November 2021. Three men found guilty of hate crimes in the death of Ahmaud Arbery 02:18
In Travis McMichael's appeal, attorney Amy Lee Copeland didn't dispute the jury's finding that he was motivated by racism. The social media evidence included a 2018 Facebook comment Travis McMichael made on a video of Black man playing a prank on a white person. He used an expletive and a racial slur after he wrote wrote: "I'd kill that .... ."
Instead, Copeland based her appeal on legal technicalities. She said that prosecutors failed to prove the streets of the Satilla Shores subdivision where Arbery was killed were public roads, as stated in the indictment used to charge the men.
Copeland cited records of a 1958 meeting of Glynn County commissioners in which they rejected taking ownership of the streets from the subdivision's developer. At the trial, prosecutors relied on service request records and testimony from a county official to show the streets have been maintained by the county government.
Attorneys for the trio also made technical arguments for overturning their attempted kidnapping convictions. Prosecutors said the charge fit because the men used pickup trucks to cut off Arbery's escape from the neighborhood.
Prosecutors said other federal appellate circuits have ruled that any automobile used in a kidnapping qualifies as an instrument of interstate commerce. And they said the benefit the men sought was "to fulfill their personal desires to carry out vigilante justice."
The trial judge sentenced both McMichaels to life in prison for their hate crime convictions, plus additional time — 10 years for Travis McMichael and seven years for his father — for brandishing guns while committing violent crimes. Bryan received a lighter hate crime sentence of 35 years in prison, in part because he wasn't armed and preserved the cellphone video that became crucial evidence.
All three also got 20 years in prison for attempted kidnapping, but the judge ordered that time to overlap with their hate crime sentences.
If the U.S. appeals court overturns any of their federal convictions, both McMichaels and Bryan would remain in prison. All three are serving life sentences in Georgia state prisons for murder, and have motions for new state trials pending before a judge.
