May 2023 Black Hills Trip
So I took a trip out to the Black Hills of western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming to play dorky tourist. Since I have way more than the ten pictures tumblr limits you for a photo post, I'm going to make a text post (plus also I wanted to talk about some of them.)
Warning: this is gonna be kinda long lol.
First stop, the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD:

Then Wall Drug in Wall, SD:

The next day we went over to Wyoming. I've been working on my own original story since I was a teenager and it takes place in Wyoming. When we were out there we happened to be quite close to the town I wanted to base my story off of. The town is a little one called Sundance. I took so many random pictures for references and to get a general feel for it. I also think the town of Deadwood would make a good base too, so I will probably merge some elements of both places together to make what I was going for. Most of the pictures weren't all that impressive, but here are some of the best ones from there:

Since it was close by, we went over to Devils Tower as well. The funniest thing there was a conversation I overheard between a little boy and his dad. The kid was asking why there was so much stuff with aliens, and the dad replied, in the most Wyoming accent: "Because they're fixin' to take you."
Tumblr media
Next we took our sweet time getting our butts over to see Mount Rushmore and stopped to stare at the scenery along the way:

The next day we did less touristy things and took the scenic route through Spearfish Canyon. This was in the morning and it had rained the night before and it was gorgeous:

We also went up to Flag Mountain Camp, a summer camp that my brother works at. He has an adorable new puppy too:

Then we went through Custer State Park and got to see a bunch of animals. I got good pictures of a burro and a coyote, but we also saw a snake, bison, deer, and pronghorn antelope:

What is your passion in life?
What are you passionate about in life? What really gets you going and makes you happy, no matter what? Here are 3 things I have been passionate about in life and why.
Rock hunting. I know that sounds odd, how can one be passionate about...rocks. That is a good question, and maybe I can't fully answer that, but I just know that from a young age, I have loved rock hunting. I think what started me down that road as a young boy was the fascination with how many different types of rocks there are and what caused them to be so different. The thrill of going out and finding something that is just so cool looking was great as a young boy and let me tell you, that feeling never left as an adult. When rock hunting as a young boy most of my cool finds are either some variety of quartz or a nice piece of granite. I had no clue most of the time what the rock actually was back in those days, I just knew that it looked cool. When I got older and was able to venture out further and to different places, I was able to see more of what was out there. The trip in 2010 to SD was great, some of the agates I found were super cool. When my sister and I pulled into the first area we decided to try there was nothing but rocks as far as the eye could see. I mean, I could have spent the entire day at that area and still not covered everything I would have liked to. Another cool time I remember was when my sister had just got done taking some pictures at the horse corral area of Little Missouri State Park, beautiful wooden patio overlooking the badlands. We were driving back on a gravel road and I asked her to stop at this weathered away hillside to see what was there. Ended up finding some cool shale with a green mineral growing out of it. I wasn't sure what the mineral was, but it sure did look cool. This reminds me of driving back from the SD Badlands and stopping at a weathered away hillside to do some hunting and find some fantastic rocks there. One was a pretty decent sized agate that my friend thought looked like a dinosaur head. I always wanted to cut that rock open to see what it looked lik inside. The other part of rock hunting that I loved was the peace it brought me. Getting out on a beautiful day and just being alone with my thoughts was always nice. There was no stress, no anxiety, none of that existed in the rock hunting world, I could simply exist and be in the moment.
Photography was another passion of mine for many years. Again, it was all about getting out and finding something new and exciting to capture. A beautiful sunrise or sunset. Storm clouds rolling in. What kind of wildlife are you going to see. I remember the first time I came across a Ruddy Duck with it's baby blue colored beak, I thought that was so cool. The first male Wood Duck I saw in Oak Park with it's amazing colors. Male pheasants, although extremely beautiful, were a pain in my ass as they were very hard to photograph and took a ton of patience to get a good clean shot of. The first time I saw a moose and was able to get shot of it, I still remember that evening like it was yesterday. I was out and about in the Carpio area taking photo's of a storm. I had gotten some really good shots including some with a nice rainbow, and I came around this corner by a farm house and in the tree line I saw a big animal. At first I thought it might be a horse, but further investigation told me I had just found my first moose. I couldn't stop the car and roll down my window to get a shot quick enough. I had to calm myself a bit so as not to scare it away. One of my other favorite moments was taking in the scenic loop at Lake Darling and seeing something orange in the trees. I stopped and backed up, zoomed into the trees and saw an Oriole. Again, so excited, couldn't get the shot fast enough. My first time capturing lightning...gosh that was so cool. I was old fashioned in my approach to lightning, I enjoyed just sitting and taking shot after shot in hopes of capturing something cool. That first night I sat on my balcony and just kept shooting in hopes of getting a good lightning shot, and I was did indeed. I felt like Tom Hanks in Cast Away when he finally made fire.
Definitely a couple of passions in my life that I miss being able to do.
A passion that I found a bit too late in life was meteorology. Had I known earlier I definitely would have went to college for it. This one snuck up on me. I was scared of storms as a young man and hated them for much of early life because a Sunday storm meant no races at Nodak and that pissed me off. I don't know, sometime after I graduated college I just became fascinated by storms. I remember when I really felt it was night there was a storm that was brewing West of me and so I jumped in the car and headed West. I ended up chasing that storm was, gosh, I would say close to 100 miles. It was so thrilling and the clouds were so cool and the lightning and everything involved, just so much excitement, awe and wonder. I never did get a photo of a tornado, which bums out to this day, but I did see a few in my time. I remember being at my grandparents home and there was a tornado West of town out by Wal-Mart so I got in the car and drove out that way. I remember cresting a hill and getting my first view of the tornado, man, that was so cool. It had perfect structure to it. I drove out a bit further and parked in a lot a bit East of where the tornado had been and was lucky enough to see a few more funnel clouds form that day from the spot. I never stopped having a healthy fear and respect for storms, but for some reason I was able to push that aside to get out and see them first hand as much as possible. Oh yeah, the time I was watching from my balcony as the clouds above were just nasty looking and mean, and then off in the distance I saw a big dust cloud that came rolling by, probably no more than 200 feet in front of my balcony. That was pretty sweet. I would have loved to have studied storms for a living.
This brings me to my my greatest passion...hockey. UND hockey specifically. That is where it all started and that is where my hockey heart will always lie. I mean, the NHL is great, and Vegas is great and I love watching the games, and them winning the Cup last year was so very cool, especially since I was able to fully enjoy it, but UND hockey has always been and will always be my greatest passion. The season started tonight with an exhibition game against Manitoba, and, gosh, it was a great game. 10-0 final. Shots were something like 59-6. Granted, Manitoba is not a great team, but you still have to go out and make the plays in those games and the boys did that in spades. Jackson Blake, good lord, that guy is talented. Carolina Hurricanes fans, he might be a good one for you in a couple of years. Jayden Perron looked really good, especially for a freshmen in his first college game, again, looking at you Hurricanes fans. They came out fast and quick and never let up off the gas, which was nice to see as they have had a tendency in the past to start slow, and then ease up in those games, leading to some bad habits. I am trying to temper my excitement though as, again, just an exhibition game and the coming weeks will give us a much clearer vision of what this team is as we face some tough competition coming up. #3 Minnesota and then #1 Boston on their home ice. By the time conference play rolls around this team will be battle tested and we should know a lot more of where they truly are, but for tonight, I am going to be excited.
The message being, we all need passions in our life, things that make us truly happy and allow us to escape life for a while and just enjoy being alive. No stress. No anxiety. Just simply being in the moment and happy.

Family-Friendly Beaches in Southern California
I grew up in San Marcos, just north of San Diego, so I’ll admit I’m a bit biased when it comes to my love for SD beaches. I do believe that San Diego has the best beaches in California. But whether you’re a local mom or visiting with little ones in town, these family-friendly beaches are perfect for making sun-soaked memories.
Plus, I’ve added some of the Orange County beach gems for good measure!
✧ INSIDER TIP ✧: Want to skip the parking fees? Swing by your local library and borrow a California State Parks Pass—FOR FREE! It grants you access to select state beaches, so you can get free parking and free park entrance without spending anything.
1. Moonlight Beach – Encinitas, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
Moonlight Beach is one of my absolute favorites—I grew up here, and it still holds a special place in my heart. It’s lively during the summer with a vibrant, family-friendly energy, and more serene in the off-seasons. Located next to the surfer-famous D Street Beach (where legends like Kelly Slater once surfed), this spot is perfect for both relaxing and playing.
There’s a designated swimmers-only section where kids can safely splash around, and just outside of that, you’ll find boogie boarders and beginner surfers catching small waves.
The beach is well-equipped with volleyball nets, fire pits, a playground, multiple showers, and clean restrooms. Lifeguard towers offer peace of mind, and parking is free both in the lot and along nearby streets.
Family Food Trip Tip: I like to start my days with a Lavender Tea Buzz from Better Buzz in Encinitas, just a short drive away, and after a beach day, grab a spicy vegan duck larb at Plumeria or treat the kids to ice cream from Cali Cream.
One Thing to Consider:
It can get crowded in the summer, with early risers staking out spots as early as 5 AM. For a quieter vibe, stroll further down the coast where it’s less busy. I recommend parking at D Street beach and walking down, if you have older kids that can carry their weight LOL.
2. Torrey Pines State Beach – La Jolla, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
Torrey Pines State Beach became my favorite for peaceful sunset beach walks during the summer of my pregnancy. With the most beautiful scenic ocean views and stunning cliffs, this beach radiates a calm, grounding energy. It’s perfect for long coastal walks—I used to do the Miles Circuit here in my last trimester, soaking in the presence of the Earth and meditating with my baby in my belly.
Its wide, flat shoreline makes it great for kids to run around or build epic sandcastles. My partner keeps talking about wanting to skimboard here, thanks to its smooth shoreline. If you like to stroll, keep walking to your left to reach a more private oasis (go at low tide)!
There’s paid parking in a secure lot, or you can try your luck with free parking along the main road. (or check out the California State Library Parks Pass HERE.)
Family Food Trip Tip: After your beach day, head to Buonasera in Del Mar for pizza or Bird Rock for a quick coffee pick-me-up with a great view.
Bonus: If you pay for parking, you can drive up to Torrey Pines Natural Reserve, with kid-friendly hiking trails offering breathtaking views. You can stay here all day to partake in Torrey Pines State Beach hiking, my favorite place to hike in the spring and summertime!
One Thing to Consider:
No volleyball nets here, but the natural beauty makes up for it.
3. Sunset Beach – Huntington Beach, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
True to its name, Sunset Beach offers breathtaking views as the sun dips below the horizon. It’s quieter than nearby Huntington Beach, making it perfect for families looking for a more laid-back vibe. The shallow entry and gentle waves are great for little swimmers.
During the summer, lifeguards are stationed along the shore, ensuring a safe environment for swimmers and surfers alike. However, check the forecast before heading out—while some days are warm and glassy, others can bring strong winds and choppier waters. Facilities include restrooms and outdoor showers conveniently located near the parking lot, making it easy to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home.
Family Food Trip Tip: Pick up healthy snacks and smoothies from Mother’s Market and Kitchen before heading to the beach, or go to kid and dog-friendly Golden Road Brewing.
Things to Consider:
Parking here can be tricky, as the free lot is often filled with camper vans and local residents, especially during peak hours. If you're planning a visit on a busy summer day, be prepared for a potential wait of over an hour to find a spot. Because of this, larger gatherings may not be ideal here, unless you arrive early to secure parking. Additionally, getting to the shoreline can be a bit of a trek, as the wide stretch of sand makes for a longer walk—something to keep in mind if you're carrying a lot of gear.
4. Cardiff State Beach – Encinitas, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
Golden sands, rolling waves, and a laid-back vibe make Cardiff State Beach a classic SoCal gem. Nestled along the coast between Encinitas and Solana Beach, this stretch is perfect for long walks, lounging, and some of the best surf in North County. The sandbars here create glassy waves, making it a favorite for surfers and stand-up paddleboarders, while the shallow tide pools near the cliffs come alive with marine life at low tide.
Family Food Trip Tip: Locals, including myself, highly encourage visitors to try out the Cardiff Crack Tri-Tip from Cardiff Seaside Market for a close-to-heavenly sandwich experience. Don’t forget to grab ice cream at Gelato 101!
One Thing to Consider:
Park in the state beach lots (free with a California State Parks Pass) or find limited free street parking along Highway 101.
4. La Jolla Shores – La Jolla, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
La Jolla Shores is a family paradise. The calm, gentle waves are perfect for beginner swimmers and little surfers alike. The large grassy park with picnic tables is great for breaks between beach time, and there’s a playground nearby for extra fun.
This is one of San Diego’s top beach destinations, where locals gather for all-day summer parties or simply unwind and people-watch on a laid-back afternoon.
Family Food Trip Tip: Grab a hearty and tasty breakfast at Sugar and Scribe before heading to the sand, and after a day of sun and surf, treat yourselves to some refreshing ice cream at Scoops.
One Thing to Consider:
It’s a popular spot for surf schools, so parts of the water can get crowded with classes. I actually learned how to surf here, and while it was an amazing experience, I did get a couple of nasty bumps from other beginners—so proceed with caution! For more open space and fewer boards around, just walk a little further down the beach.
6. Local Pick : 25th Street — Del Mar, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
This specific location on the Del Mar Beach coast is where I spent most of my last year of college learning how to surf at 5 AM. I love that it was away from tourists and large group of surfers that you can find at 15th street.
Located between Powerhouse Park and Dog Beach, this uncrowded stretch of sand is a favorite among locals who come here for quiet surf, casual swims, and laid-back beach days. The waves are gentle enough for wading and bodyboarding, but you’ll also spot the occasional longboarder.
At this specific location, you can find a lifeguard tower, showers, and bathrooms (in my opinion, the cleanest!)
One of the best parts about 25th Street Beach is its unbeatable sunset views. As the sun dips behind the ocean, the sky transforms into a breathtaking mix of soft pinks, purples, and fiery oranges. Bring a blanket, a good book, and maybe a warm drink to enjoy one of Del Mar’s most magical golden hours.
Family Food Trip Tip: Stop by Sidecar Doughnuts and Coffee for their Butter and Salt Donut or head to The Cottage for a sit-down brunch.
One Thing to Consider:
There is free street parking along Stratford Ct. and surrounding residential areas, but spots can be limited.
7. Corona Del Mar – Newport Beach, CA
Why You’ll Love It:
Nestled along the Newport Beach coastline, Corona Del Mar feels like a dreamy escape from the everyday. With its blend of golden sands, rugged cliffs, and hidden coves, it offers something for every beachgoer. The main beach is a wide, open stretch perfect for sunbathing and picnics, while the rocky alcoves tucked into the bluffs provide a more private retreat. The gentle waves make it a great spot for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding.
At low tide, the tide pools near the cliffs come alive with marine life, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers. (Check out Little Corona, a hidden snorkeling gem!) The jetty at the entrance of Newport Harbor is the perfect place for a sunset stroll, where you can watch sailboats glide by as the sky turns shades of pink and gold.
Family Food Trip Tip: Stop by The Beachcomber Cafe right on the sand for an easy, breezy lunch with ocean views. For a sweet treat, head to Shake Shack (the original, not the chain!) perched above the cliffs.
One Thing to Consider:
Paid parking in the main lot, but you can find free residential parking in the surrounding neighborhood if you don’t mind a short, but steep walk.
Beach Spots I would like to visit next…
Doheny State Beach — Dana Point, CA
Churches — San Clemente, CA
Crescent Bay Beach — Laguna Beach, CA
Final Thoughts:
Whether you’re chasing waves, exploring tide pools, or just soaking in the sun with your family, Southern California’s beaches offer something special for every season of life. Pack your sunscreen, a big blanket, and some snacks—the ocean is calling!

Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway & Custer State Park - Custer, SD
Tumblr media
Today was a big day, we drove the scenic loop, played a little bit at Sylvan Lake, then drove through Custer State Park. It was a bit smoky, but we still managed to get some great views.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As soon as we got onto the Scenic Loop, traffic came to a dead stop. A herd of bison were crossing the road, the herd was huge and it took a good 10-15 minutes for traffic to start moving again. Lots of calves and some really big guys, too. Great start to the day!
Tumblr media
We stopped and took a look at George's profile - a visit to Mt. Rushmore is scheduled for later in the week. We then continued through the tunnels and the beautiful drive along the byway, finally reaching the entry to Sylvan Lake. We were lucky to find a couple of parking spots close to the lake. We spent a couple of hours hanging out at the lake - kayaking, SUPing, swimming, and hiking around the lake. Beautiful spot, except for the pesky biting flies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We packed up and left the lake, made our way through a couple more tunnels and finished up with a drive through Custer State Park. We were ready to head back to camp for happy hour.

After a rainy, stormy night I had pancakes, eggs, and bacon at the camp restaurant. Then on the road SD 44 east to Badlands National Park.  It was an easy drive and scenic. At the park’s visitor lodge and then at the Visitor Center I shopped.  Then began the park road west. Stopped at numerous overlooks. Took some walks to some secluded areas.  The ground was muddy and sticky, so my shoes were caked in mud.  After touring the park headed west to Wall, SD.  An interesting experience.  Next visited the three sites of the Minuteman National Historical site.  The silo (where the missile was pointed at you), the command center, and the Visitor Center.  Exhibits were basically explaining the cold war era.  Continued on I-90 east through a supercell storm.  The clouds were fast circling in front of me.  Got a campsite in Kennebec, SD. Ate supper at a local bar. Had a pizza. Then ended the day back at the campsite with picture editing and sending emails.  A good day.

Discover the U.S. cities offering ample jobs, affordable living, and scenic surroundings.
Step into the spotlight of America's urban stage, where cities are not just living spaces but canvases of opportunity, affordability, and natural splendor. As the economic waves rise, Americans are setting sail to find the shores where their financial vessels can weather the storm and still cruise towards the good life.
In the quest to outpace the sprint of costs and the marathon of inflation, we embarked on a voyage to discover the most budget-friendly metropolises for the diligent worker and the tranquil retiree. Our journey took us through the urban tapestry of 113 cities, each evaluated on a rich palette of criteria. We also tapped into the collective pulse of 1,000 Americans, exploring their urban desires and the qualities they seek in a place to plant roots.
The Affordability Atlas for the Working Adventurer
Our odyssey to pinpoint the sanctuaries of savings for those in the prime of their careers led us to analyze housing affordability, median income, cost of living, and employment vitality across 113 cities. We charted a course through the data and emerged with a treasure map of cities, ranked from the most budget-friendly to those that demand a king's ransom. At the helm was Sioux Falls, SD, a city that straddles the Big Sioux River and is crowned by the majestic Falls Park. It's a metropolis with the soul of a village, where attractions like a zoo and aquarium are mere preludes to its network of trails that beckon hikers, bikers, and walkers alike.
Springfield, IL, took the silver, a city where history whispers from every corner, from the home of Abraham Lincoln to the myriad of museums and memorials. It's a hop away from the heartbeat of St. Louis, MO, making it a sanctuary of affordability.
Wichita, KS, claimed the bronze, a family paradise with a constellation of museums and parks. The landscape may be a canvas of flatness, but the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers paint it with strokes of natural allure.
The top 10 also welcomed Virginia Beach, VA; Des Moines, IA; and Oklahoma City, OK, with Nebraska proudly placing Lincoln and Omaha in this league of affordability.
The Urban Dreamscapes of the Working Heart
Affordability might be the compass, but it's not the only star guiding the working souls in their search for a home. We delved into the minds of 800 working adults to uncover their urban yearnings. The cost of living (55%) stood as the beacon in their decision-making, followed by the warmth of family (30%), the shield of safety (28%), and the promise of employment (27%).
Yet, when it comes to urban fantasies, Denver (17%) soared as the most coveted, trailed by the coastal charm of San Diego (16%) and the pulsating rhythm of New York City (15%). Despite Denver's robust job market and income, its affordability took a hit due to living costs and housing prices.
