So This Week… They claim to have Gregori Rasputin’s dismembered member stored away in the back room. It’s possible it’s just part of a giant pig, but that’s for another time.

Despite its family-friendly appeal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico makes for a romantic getaway. They’ve recently added all-inclusive Resorts, buzzworthy hotels and new restaurants along its "Golden Corridor", so if you have a family, you might have a great time even with the younger ones. So This Week… You COULD take a flight from San Diego down, but if you drive instead it’ll be a two-days solid of travel. The bright sides to that are LOTS of sea-side traveling and a potential stop in Tijuana. And before you ask…. “NO! That’s not a thing!” You know what we’re talking about.

If you’d like to actually, maybe, speak the language, why not take a trip to the West Coast of Ireland and visit the city of Galway. It’s a bustling local town with a thriving lineup for theater, food, literature and more. It’s also part of the Wild Atlantic Way, which is home to otherworldly scenery, including the famed Cliffs of Moher and Connemara National Park with its bogs, lakes and natural beauty. And if safari isn’t your thing, maybe take in a hot air balloon at dawn where you watch lions feasting and frolicking in morning light or a dazzle of zebra grazing as acacia trees welcome you off to the distance. Just outside of Lisbon, Portugal is the precinct of Sintra, where couples will find themselves in a fairy-tale like setting under the Moorish Castle and the yellow towers of Pena Palace. Local boutique properties nearby, many facing the palace, are decorated with palatial period architecture, adding to the historic experience. So This Week… Don’t think your four years of Spanish are going to be useless here, but you’ll still be frustrated. Take your time reading menus.

If you’re ever in Nassau, Bahamas and want a very unromantic dinner date, go check out the Graycliff Hotel’s wine collection. You have a choice to make - would you like to buy a house or a bottle of wine? Because you’re looking at a cost of, like, $200,000! But at least you’ll be able to say you ate a meal in a dungeon while looking at a bottle of wine you couldn’t afford. So This Week… That bottle of wine is super dusty because it’s super old. It’d probably taste absolutely revolting. Save your money and just ask for a glass of water. 

Aquarius 

Basically, everybody knows the Southwest of the U.S. is a pretty haunted place. Would you like to be haunted in your bed and breakfast by an angry cat, for example? Most would say “NO!”, but we know some of you would find it great - since, you know… no hairball cleanup. Some even claim they have prostitutes, poker players, and headless revolutionaries as spirits to keep you company. So This Week… Look, if you wanted to spend a night imagining there were people watching your escapades, you could just stay home and open your window shades. It’s cheaper.

Pisces  

You’re, maybe, the kinkiest one of the whole group. Visit downtown Cartagena, Colombia and spend a few nights visiting a beautiful colonial home advertised as a history museum. Just know that the history it’s a museum for is for torture devices. The museum is called the Palacio de la Inquisicion (The Inquisition Museum), and it’s located in an otherwise perfectly respectable area. If Spanish torture methods from the 16th century are your thing, and apparently the Stars think they are, enjoy walking through this unassuming Colonial-Style house with your paramour. So This Week… PLEASE do not tell the tour guide that they have, ahem, A Nice Rack. They've heard the joke hundreds of times. Behave yourself.

Tidepools of La Jolla, California – Nursery of The Pacific Ocean Marine Life - Torrey Pines, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure

To the north and east of the beach Los Peñasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve is one of the last remaining salt marsh areas and waterfowl refuges in southern California. The marsh, coves, and tidepools are rich in sea life: limpets, shore crabs and hermit crabs, mussels, barnacles, sea anemones, and many species of snails and cast-off shells.

This is the perfect place to watch the annual gray whale migration. All year round, you can see Seals, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions in the ocean. About two hundred species of birds are protected at the reserve, including migratory ones.

Year round Resident shore birds include brown and American white pelicans, black-bellied and snowy plovers, American avocets, western sandpipers, willets, whimbrels, sanderlings, great egrets, and longbilled curlews. Occasionally, visitors may see gray foxes, bobcats, coyotes, and mule deer. Reptile residents include rattlesnakes and various other snakes and species of lizards, including the endangered horned lizard.

The Torrey Pines 2,000-acre reserve contains about 300 endangered and protected species of native plants. These vanishing habitats are home to sand verbena and beach primrose on the beach, as well as California sagebrush, California buckwheat, black sage, and coastal barrel cactus. On the cliffs other high elevations there are many chaparral plants, including chamise, manzanita, ceanothus, California scrub oak, toyon, and mountain mahogany. Many of these scrub plants in particular provide the refreshing herbal fragrance that mixes so incredibly with the ocean breeze.

Before this area was colonized by Spain, the Kumeyaay tribes migrated lived here, and migrated between here, the deserts, and the mountains throughout the seasons. The land was bountiful, and the Kumeyaay would have fished, hunted, collected crustaceans, and gathered seeds, fruit, roots, to create probably a very healthy and tasty diet. The Kumeyaay have left an indelible archaeological and cultural legacy here in San Diego county and they continue to be a strong tribal nation today both here and south of the border in Baja Norte state.

The water is usually so clean and clear here, and because of the lack of shoreline development, and the underwater marine reserve, this constantly ranks as one of the 3 cleanest beaches in SoCal. This is a wonderful rare instance of extremely valuable real estate, both being a wildlife refuge and habitat, and a beautiful escape from civilization for people to enjoy for the most part in harmony.

It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together. Actually, on re-reading, I think the larger problem with Part 2 of Cup Magic is that once Mike gets to San Diego, he’s mostly just passively watching the racing and not doing very much himself.

In Part 1, we have a solid, time-tested “young person moves to new town and school amidst (apparent) family problems, is lonely and bullied, makes friends and builds confidence through learning a new hobby/skill” children’s book plot. Mike adapts to his new school, bonds with his grandparents, makes friends with Hone and later Lucy, and learns to sail and gradually builds skill and knowledge. Actually, a good subplot for the San Diego section would be Mike drawing a comic book about the America’s Cup. That would fit with him being an aspiring cartoonist throughout the book and give him a reason to ask people questions and pay close attention to things— and maybe give more of a reason for him to interact with people from the other teams. It would also give Mike an overall goal that can be accomplished by the time the team returns home for the victory celebrations. (Since the real best ending for his story would be if we saw Mike, Hone, and Lucy back in Auckland winning their club’s racing season over the next few months, but the book doesn’t go on that far since the celebrations are the natural and most dramatic endpoint.)

I think one downside of Cup Magic being kids’ historical fiction set in the recent past at such a specific event is that there already ARE real kids who were part of the AC 1995 story, who are now grown-up, so they are sort of kept at arms-length from the fictional protagonist just like all of the other still-living real people.

And that’s not really noticeable with the adults, because how close are most kids with their parents’ co-workers, really? But here we’re told the fictional Mike Lucas is hanging out with James and Sarah-Jane Blake and Emma and Nick Blackman, and that they call themselves “the Cup Kids”. (Oddly, Grayson Coutts, in the same age group, is never mentioned at all until the final celebrations.)

However, Mike doesn’t describe his interactions with them in anything like the kind of detail he uses to talk about hanging out with his fictional friends. It’s just things like “I heard Sarah-Jane and Emma practice a song they wrote”, whereas with his invented friends Hone and Lucy, we get conversations and escapades transcribed.

I can see why Susan Battye might feel weird about fictionalizing too many details of the childhoods of people who are now adults, (especially the Blakes, who have lived most of their lives in the public eye, including when grieving after their father’s murder), and saying they had a fictional BFF who never really existed. Such an approach might require her to talk with them and get their permission, and IIRC the Blakes now live in England rather than NZ, so that could have been hard.

So instead we get this arms-length approach where we don’t get the sense that Mike is very close to people who are supposedly his good friends.
