This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” - they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them! Get in contact with them on Facebook, shipping to the U.S. only, and tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
These Horrible-Scopes will be releasing on the 13th, so JUST in time for Valentine’s Day aka Jack Benny’s 39th Birthday. And even though we’d LIKE to make this all about Jack, we’re instead suggesting either romantic, or UN-romantic, vacation destinations to visit. Ready to roll the dice on who gets what? Doesn’t matter, because here we go!
Aries
Settled in the 1970s by an Italian banker named Gian Franco Brignone, we’re sending you to Costa Careyes, Mexico. One visit to the private community and you'll understand how it made our list of one of the most romantic getaways in the world. The resort is home to both residences and a hotel, plus on-site dining options, wellness programming, pristine and swimmable beaches without cruise ship disruptions, and prime views of the Pacific. So This Week… We’re still in the Winter season, so plan on taking an early-day whale-watching trip and enjoy the sun. Assuming that you don’t get seasick, of course.
Taurus
If sightseeing for Baroque and Neoclassical architecture is more your style, may we humbly suggest Madrid, Spain. You’ll have no shortage of luxury and beauty to experience in Plaza Mayor while indulging in churros con chocolat from San Gines. But if you do end up looking for more, you can always explore the walkable neighborhood of Salamanca. So This Week… Remember to eat your feet while in Spain. (Trust us, that joke is funny if you speak Spanish.)
Gemini
If necromancy is more your thing, and you’d love to gaze on a skeletal arm… you know, outside of the whole Halloween Thing, how about taking a trip to Malta? We’re not going to give you specifics on where to go, but if you head into the countryside you might find an old church with a silver arm on display. This is not exactly a quest item, but supposedly inside of that arm is St. Paul the Apostle’s wrist bone. So This Week… It’s only 259 days from Valentines’ Day until Halloween. Have you started your preparation work yet? C’mon, man! Tick-Tock!
Cancer Moon-Child
For the impatient of you, this will sound like it’s a romantic outing. For others, we-e-ell. We’re suggesting a trip to visit a sex museum in St. Petersburg, Russia - the first one of its kind in the country! You’ll be able to look over all kinds of artifacts, photos, and pleasure devices from history - some that might even be worth it today. So This Week… They claim to have Gregori Rasputin’s dismembered member stored away in the back room. It’s possible it’s just part of a giant pig, but that’s for another time.
Leo
Despite its family-friendly appeal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico makes for a romantic getaway. They’ve recently added all-inclusive Resorts, buzzworthy hotels and new restaurants along its "Golden Corridor", so if you have a family, you might have a great time even with the younger ones. Expect to choose between outdoor activities like golfing, boating, and lounging on golden beaches. So This Week… You COULD take a flight from San Diego down, but if you drive instead it’ll be a two-days solid of travel. The bright sides to that are LOTS of sea-side traveling and a potential stop in Tijuana. And before you ask…. “NO! That’s not a thing!” You know what we’re talking about.
Virgo
If you’d like to actually, maybe, speak the language, why not take a trip to the West Coast of Ireland and visit the city of Galway. It’s a bustling local town with a thriving lineup for theater, food, literature and more. It’s also part of the Wild Atlantic Way, which is home to otherworldly scenery, including the famed Cliffs of Moher and Connemara National Park with its bogs, lakes and natural beauty. So This Week… We’ll suggest booking WELL in advance at Ashford Castle - it dates back to the 12th century and has been converted into a five-star property. Considering it’s a little late, you might want to book accommodations for next year instead.
Libra
Bali, Indonesia is far beyond a one-and-done romantic destination. Even though it’s teeming with tourists, it’s also a perfect seclusion get-away destination. You’ll have gorgeous villas, delicious food, welcoming hospitality, and a plethora of natural beauty that makes for all sorts of activities if the outside is your thing. So This Week… One of the offerings is sunrise yoga. If you’re planning on just sleeping in, that might not be worth waking up for. But the coffee will be AMAZING!
Scorpio
Sumptuous and worth savoring, the Masai Mara in Kenya is an amazing place. If you appreciate nature, wildlife, and the thrills of safari, you’ll love this region! Start the morning with a cup of coffee, a wrapped blanket, and a chill of excitement rippling through the gorgeous African landscape. And if safari isn’t your thing, maybe take in a hot air balloon at dawn where you watch lions feasting and frolicking in morning light or a dazzle of zebra grazing as acacia trees welcome you off to the distance. So This Week… Yes, acacia trees are a Real Thing, not just a Minecraft Thing! You really need to get out more often!
Sagittarius
Just outside of Lisbon, Portugal is the precinct of Sintra, where couples will find themselves in a fairy-tale like setting under the Moorish Castle and the yellow towers of Pena Palace. Local boutique properties nearby, many facing the palace, are decorated with palatial period architecture, adding to the historic experience. So This Week… Don’t think your four years of Spanish are going to be useless here, but you’ll still be frustrated. Take your time reading menus.
Capricorn
If you’re ever in Nassau, Bahamas and want a very unromantic dinner date, go check out the Graycliff Hotel’s wine collection. You have a choice to make - would you like to buy a house or a bottle of wine? Because you’re looking at a cost of, like, $200,000! But at least you’ll be able to say you ate a meal in a dungeon while looking at a bottle of wine you couldn’t afford. So This Week… That bottle of wine is super dusty because it’s super old. It’d probably taste absolutely revolting. Save your money and just ask for a glass of water.
Aquarius
Basically, everybody knows the Southwest of the U.S. is a pretty haunted place. Would you like to be haunted in your bed and breakfast by an angry cat, for example? Most would say “NO!”, but we know some of you would find it great - since, you know… no hairball cleanup. Some even claim they have prostitutes, poker players, and headless revolutionaries as spirits to keep you company. So This Week… Look, if you wanted to spend a night imagining there were people watching your escapades, you could just stay home and open your window shades. It’s cheaper.
Pisces
You’re, maybe, the kinkiest one of the whole group. Visit downtown Cartagena, Colombia and spend a few nights visiting a beautiful colonial home advertised as a history museum. Just know that the history it’s a museum for is for torture devices. The museum is called the Palacio de la Inquisicion (The Inquisition Museum), and it’s located in an otherwise perfectly respectable area. If Spanish torture methods from the 16th century are your thing, and apparently the Stars think they are, enjoy walking through this unassuming Colonial-Style house with your paramour. So This Week… PLEASE do not tell the tour guide that they have, ahem, A Nice Rack. They've heard the joke hundreds of times. Behave yourself.
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Facebook, Ko-Fi, Discord, and BLUESKY.

Tidepools of La Jolla, California – Nursery of The Pacific Ocean Marine Life - Torrey Pines, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure
youtube
To the north and east of the beach Los Peñasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve is one of the last remaining salt marsh areas and waterfowl refuges in southern California. The marsh, coves, and tidepools are rich in sea life: limpets, shore crabs and hermit crabs, mussels, barnacles, sea anemones, and many species of snails and cast-off shells.
This is the perfect place to watch the annual gray whale migration. All year round, you can see Seals, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions in the ocean. About two hundred species of birds are protected at the reserve, including migratory ones.
Year round Resident shore birds include brown and American white pelicans, black-bellied and snowy plovers, American avocets, western sandpipers, willets, whimbrels, sanderlings, great egrets, and longbilled curlews. Occasionally, visitors may see gray foxes, bobcats, coyotes, and mule deer. Reptile residents include rattlesnakes and various other snakes and species of lizards, including the endangered horned lizard.
The Torrey Pines 2,000-acre reserve contains about 300 endangered and protected species of native plants. These vanishing habitats are home to sand verbena and beach primrose on the beach, as well as California sagebrush, California buckwheat, black sage, and coastal barrel cactus. On the cliffs other high elevations there are many chaparral plants, including chamise, manzanita, ceanothus, California scrub oak, toyon, and mountain mahogany. Many of these scrub plants in particular provide the refreshing herbal fragrance that mixes so incredibly with the ocean breeze.
Before this area was colonized by Spain, the Kumeyaay tribes migrated lived here, and migrated between here, the deserts, and the mountains throughout the seasons. The land was bountiful, and the Kumeyaay would have fished, hunted, collected crustaceans, and gathered seeds, fruit, roots, to create probably a very healthy and tasty diet. The Kumeyaay have left an indelible archaeological and cultural legacy here in San Diego county and they continue to be a strong tribal nation today both here and south of the border in Baja Norte state.
The water is usually so clean and clear here, and because of the lack of shoreline development, and the underwater marine reserve, this constantly ranks as one of the 3 cleanest beaches in SoCal. This is a wonderful rare instance of extremely valuable real estate, both being a wildlife refuge and habitat, and a beautiful escape from civilization for people to enjoy for the most part in harmony.
It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together. You can enjoy my series: Torrey Pines – La Jolla, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure, full length, 3 glorious days on the North County coast, and experience all of the different moods and landscapes from the ever-changing interplay between the coastal inversion and sunlight.

Whale Watching in Baja Lagoons: A Foray into Nature's Heart
Each winter at Baja California's protected lagoons, one of the planet’s most unusual wildlife stages comes to life as hundreds of gray whales finish their grand migration from Arctic oceans. The protected bays provide tourists with a unique chance to see these wonderful marine mammals up close in their breeding and Calving habitats, making wildlife experiences like no other place on the planet.
The whale watching in Baja Lagoons experience is focused on three primary lagoon systems: Laguna Ojo de Liebre (formerly Scammon's Lagoon), Laguna San Ignacio, and Bahía Magdalena. Each has its own unique features, but all feature the amazing phenomenon that has put this area on the map—the exceptionally social nature of these otherwise shy ocean leviathans. The trip to the isolated lagoons is a part of the experience. Visitors usually go from gateway towns such as San Diego or Loreto to small seaside villages where resident operators offer transfers to lakeshore camps or day trips. The intentional inaccessibility of these sites has served to conserve the unspoiled habitat that attracts both whales and wildlife spectators year-round.
It is the unique "friendly whale" behavior that sets Baja's lagoons apart from the rest of the world's whale watching locations. Where elsewhere, whales are seen from afar, numerous gray whales in these sanctuary waters actively seek out contact with humans. These curious cetaceans swim up to tiny boats, rolling alongside to be touched, or spy-hopping to greet with direct eye contact amazed guests.
This optional interaction is conducted solely on the whales' schedules, so every experience is an authentic wild animal encounter and not a scripted theme park event. The peak season runs from mid-January through March, when mothers and calves are most abundant in the lagoons. Early morning excursions offer optimal conditions, with calmer waters and fewer boats.
Local regulations strictly limit the number of vessels allowed in whale zones, ensuring minimal disturbance to these magnificent creatures during their critical breeding season. In addition to the gray whales, Baja's lagoons are home to an extensive variety of sea life. Bottlenose dolphins often ride alongside boats, sea turtles break the surface for air, and scores of seabirds cruise the waters. Surrounding terrain—where desert transitions to sea—combines to form breathtaking visual contrasts to the marine experience, with giant cardón cacti and mountains providing dramatic backdrops.
Conservation is at the core of the whale watching economy in Baja. Former hunting grounds for commercial whalers, who brought the gray whales close to extinction, these lagoons are today one of the greatest success stories of conservation. Former fishing-dependent communities have become champions of ecotourism and, consequently, of the whales and the habitat. The economic shift has resulted in a model that preserves natural resources where more benefits result from protecting the resources than do from exploiting them.
The sensation of floating silently as a 45-foot gray whale and her calf swim voluntarily to the boat makes deep impressions on visitors. They report feeling a sense of connection that goes beyond the usual wildlife observation experience—a moment of interspecies communication that defies understanding of the distances between humans and wild animals. For those who want this amazing experience, several operators provide experiences from daytrips to several days camping. The more immersive camp experiences enable visitors to sleep to the acoustic sounds of whale spouts and see early morning feeding patterns that day-trippers may not catch. Whether as a day trip or longer visit, whale watching in
Baja's lagoons provide something increasingly scarce in our globalized world—a true wilderness experience in which nature dictates the terms of encounter. The Baja gray whales remind us that wildlife observation at its finest isn't about checking boxes on a list but about significant encounters that redefine our relationship with the natural world and our place in it. https://graywhalewatching.com/

Gray Whale Watching in Baja: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure, consider going on a gray whale watching tour in Baja, California. Every year, thousands of gray whales migrate from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm waters of Baja to mate and give birth. This natural wonder provides an unparalleled opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close and personal.
Why Baja?
Baja is one of the best places in the world to observe gray whales because of its unique geography. The lagoons along the Baja coast offer a sheltered and safe haven for the whales to mate, give birth, and nurse their young. The gray whales are known to be curious and friendly, and they often approach the boats, allowing passengers to get a close-up view of these gentle giants.
When to Go
The best time to go on a gray whale watching tour in Baja is from mid-January to mid-April when the whales are in the lagoons. During this time, the mothers and their calves are the most active, providing an opportunity to see them playing, breaching, and interacting with each other. However, keep in mind that the peak season can be crowded, so it's best to book your tour well in advance.
Choosing Your Tour
There are several options when it comes to choosing a gray whale watching tour in Baja. Some tours depart from San Diego, California, and take you down the coast to the lagoons. Other tours depart from Baja itself, giving you a chance to explore the surrounding area and its culture. Depending on your preferences, you can choose from day trips or multi-day tours, small boats or larger vessels, and different levels of luxury and comfort.
What to Expect
When you arrive at the lagoons, you'll board a small boat with a knowledgeable guide who will take you to the areas where the whales are congregating. The boats are specially designed to be quiet and non-invasive, so as not to disturb the whales. The guides will also provide you with interesting facts and information about the whales, their behavior, and their habitat.
As you approach the whales, you'll be struck by their immense size and grace. You'll see the mothers swimming close to their calves, nudging them along, and teaching them the ways of the world. You may even hear the whales singing, a haunting and beautiful sound that can be heard underwater for miles. And if you're lucky, you may even witness a breach, when a whale jumps out of the water and crashes back down in a spectacular display of acrobatics.
What to Bring
To make the most of your gray whale watching tour in Baja, there are a few things you should bring with you. Dress in layers, as the weather can be cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. A camera with a zoom lens is essential for capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments. And don't forget your sense of wonder and awe!
Conclusion
Gray whale watching in Baja is an experience that should be on everyone's bucket list. It's a chance to witness the magic of nature and to connect with these magnificent creatures on a deep and meaningful level. Whether you're a nature lover, a wildlife enthusiast, or just someone looking for an adventure, a gray whale watching tour in Baja will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime. So pack your bags, book your tour, and get ready for an experience you'll never forget!

Actually, on re-reading, I think the larger problem with Part 2 of Cup Magic is that once Mike gets to San Diego, he’s mostly just passively watching the racing and not doing very much himself.
In Part 1, we have a solid, time-tested “young person moves to new town and school amidst (apparent) family problems, is lonely and bullied, makes friends and builds confidence through learning a new hobby/skill” children’s book plot. Mike adapts to his new school, bonds with his grandparents, makes friends with Hone and later Lucy, and learns to sail and gradually builds skill and knowledge. His individual story is strong and interesting even aside from learning his parents work for Team New Zealand and seeing them prepare for the America’s Cup.
(And once that plot gets underway, he also manages to contribute there— he’s the one who suggests the name “Black Magic”, and when he goes out on the chase boat with his brother, he throws across a line during a practice that prevents Black Magic from grounding on rocks.)
In San Diego, he goes out on the chase boat again early on and warns the crew to turn before they hit a whale… and then for months of diary entries, he doesn’t really do anything except watch the races and journal about them.
I think this section of the book would have been better if Mike had had his own plot happening in San Diego in parallel to the America’s Cup racing just like he did in the Auckland section. Just making friends with the children of the other team members and sailing at a club in San Diego would have been a nice continuation of his previous arc. (Would he really want to sit out the Northern Hemisphere spring and summer now that he knows how to sail?)
Actually, a good subplot for the San Diego section would be Mike drawing a comic book about the America’s Cup. That would fit with him being an aspiring cartoonist throughout the book and give him a reason to ask people questions and pay close attention to things— and maybe give more of a reason for him to interact with people from the other teams. It would also give Mike an overall goal that can be accomplished by the time the team returns home for the victory celebrations. (Since the real best ending for his story would be if we saw Mike, Hone, and Lucy back in Auckland winning their club’s racing season over the next few months, but the book doesn’t go on that far since the celebrations are the natural and most dramatic endpoint.)
I think one downside of Cup Magic being kids’ historical fiction set in the recent past at such a specific event is that there already ARE real kids who were part of the AC 1995 story, who are now grown-up, so they are sort of kept at arms-length from the fictional protagonist just like all of the other still-living real people.
And that’s not really noticeable with the adults, because how close are most kids with their parents’ co-workers, really? But here we’re told the fictional Mike Lucas is hanging out with James and Sarah-Jane Blake and Emma and Nick Blackman, and that they call themselves “the Cup Kids”. (Oddly, Grayson Coutts, in the same age group, is never mentioned at all until the final celebrations.)
However, Mike doesn’t describe his interactions with them in anything like the kind of detail he uses to talk about hanging out with his fictional friends. It’s just things like “I heard Sarah-Jane and Emma practice a song they wrote”, whereas with his invented friends Hone and Lucy, we get conversations and escapades transcribed.
I can see why Susan Battye might feel weird about fictionalizing too many details of the childhoods of people who are now adults, (especially the Blakes, who have lived most of their lives in the public eye, including when grieving after their father’s murder), and saying they had a fictional BFF who never really existed. Such an approach might require her to talk with them and get their permission, and IIRC the Blakes now live in England rather than NZ, so that could have been hard.
So instead we get this arms-length approach where we don’t get the sense that Mike is very close to people who are supposedly his good friends.
