  While there are only two in the area, you can enjoy a night at the movies with State of the art projectors and movies to watch daily, all from the comfort of your car. You can sit back with a bucket of popcorn or two and watch movies in San Diego’s mild average of 70 degrees. With an old timey feel, you and your companions can enjoy movies under the stars at the South Bay drive-in theater, which opened in 1958 and shows movies every day of the year. This is the perfect chance to make some memories you’ll remember fondly in years to come.  

   12) Cultural Art

  The cultural art in San Diego is absolutely unreal, and you can find it almost anywhere. From the street art on the walls to nonprofit organizations for cultural artists like San Diego Cultural Arts Alliance, the streets have become a colorful art exhibit that is sure to make anyone look twice, or want to take a picture to show their friends and family later. Going out and observing all of the cultural art that San Diego has to offer can be a great experience for everyone in your travel group.    13) Water Parks

  There are many water parks to visit in San Diego, most of which are on the coast near the beach. Everyone will have a thrilling day at one of these amazing locations that includes water rides, large water slides, and playgrounds where children can play safely and soundly with lifeguards on duty in most areas. Aquatica, inside of Seaworld, includes a wave pool, kid zone, and lots of fun rides. Going to one of these water parks would be a great thing to add to your vacation bucket list. Your whole group will enjoy what San Diego’s water parks have to offer.  

   14) Art Exhibits

  Art Exhibits in San Diego is a very common and popular thing, from Contemporary art to Photographic Art, there are many art exhibits to visit if you’re looking for a quiet day inside, or if it’s raining and you want to get in anything you can before you head home and leave this amazing city. Perhaps you want to see some folk art, then Mingei International Museum is perfect for you and your crew to visit. Opening in 1978, Mingei International Museum is non-profit and conserves folk art, design and craft. You definitely won’t see anything like this at home.  

   15) City Tours

  On your visit, you may want to take a tour around the city. Thankfully, there are many Tour companies that take you around the city and gives you many fun facts about this great city. Tours like The San Diego Highlights Tour and The San Diego Tour take you to many of the city’s highlights, landmarks, beaches, and treats you well and like family. Black Lightning officially joined The CW family earlier this year as the network’s 5th (6th if you count Vertigo property iZombie) DC Comics drama. After an electrifying first season, it was clear to everyone that Black Lightning is here to stay and production on Season 2 has already begun in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this week.

As the second season is underway with filming, we at That Hashtag Show have some new exciting characters to tell you about as they will be recurring throughout the second year. 

First up we have “Perenna”, an open ethnicity role who is somewhere between her 40s-50s. “Perenna” is a therapist who is a metahuman with telepathic powers. Her story revolves heavily around Jennifer Pierce as she will be trying to help the young Pierce daughter to understand her powers better, both physically and emotionally. “Perenna” doesn’t let any feelings or situations scare her off, so expect her to be a power player.

Next up we have “Zlovac”, a Caucasian man in his 30s who will be teaming up with the big bad Tobias Whale. Working as a real estate developer, “Zlovac” isn’t afraid to get violent when it comes to payback. “Zlovac” was born somewhere in Eastern Europe and has a lot of experiences in his toolbox as a money launderer as well as being slick within business.

These next three roles were briefly teased earlier in the week by TV Line, “Major Lowry”, “Dr. Jace”, as well as a new love interest for Anissa Pierce, and we at That Hashtag Show are here to expand upon these three roles.

Starting with “Major Lowry”, which is for a male of any ethnicity between the age of 35-50. He is a big deal for one simple reason which is that he is the new principal of Garfield High School! This smart and brave individual isn’t going to have any problem with taking over for Jefferson.

This next character is one who may be based on a DC character with the same name: “Dr. Jace”, who is potentially a version of Helga Race as TV Line predicts. “Dr. Jace” is a 40-something Caucasian woman who is incredibly smart and works as a computational chemist. Our heroes will have to make sure to watch out for this highly manipulative baddie who may or may not be a sociopath. This chemist is possibly focusing more on the ends as opposed to the means. 

Last, but not least we have “Zoe B” who may or may not get #ThunderGrace fans a little concerned. Open for any ethnicity, this 20-something young woman is social media savvy filled with confidence and edge. But the big deal about her is that she will be a new love-interest for Anissa! Will Anissa get into a triangle with Grace and “Zoe B” in Season 2? Only time will tell, as we have yet to hear if Chantal Thuy will be back as Grace Choi. One other important thing to know about “Zoe B” though is that she isn’t necessarily looking for a relationship, so…read into that what you will. 

Those are the new roles that are being cast for Black Lightning Season 2 and as we now know, the cast and creative team will be at San Diego Comic-Con in mid-July so hopefully by then, we will know who is playing these characters. Best of 2018

Man, what a year. It started with the loss of a friend, then terrible grief with another friend; work frustration, then an unexpected career change. But through it all ran a theme of friendship, learning, and growth. And baseball. And—of course—music. Oh, and I also turned 40! I’m looking forward to continued friendship, learning, and growth and baseball in 2019, but for now the journal of my year through music, with a collection of my favorite personal moments. Recipe: Blood Orange and Avocado Salad

After hopping around every weekend for the past few weeks, it has been really super nice to chill out in San Diego this past weekend and stay put. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy all the adrenaline that comes with juggling crazy school things and traveling, birthday surprises, wedding festivities, etc. But going nowhere and just enjoying my more immediate surroundings is also kind of the best. I even went so far as to block out all work things this weekend, so I did not check my email, grade student projects, or force myself to make any new photographs (all things I would normally do). Instead I partied with friends, visited my favorite farmer’s market, baked cookies, staked out my favorite secret spot along the coast for whale watching and sun soaking, went hiking, cooked soup, and had a nice long dinner/wine/bitching session with a close friend. It was glorious.

That said, there have been countless great “discoveries” of being back and settled in San Diego, such as remembering that whale watching season exists, and remembering that it’s also CITRUS season! So naturally I have already made my favorite seasonal citrus juice, and have been living for this blood orange and avocado salad right here. In all honesty I did not have the goat cheese to add to my own salad, and forgot to add the almond slices before I took this photo... so really these ingredients are somewhat optional, but they add a lot of great variation in texture and flavor to the salad, so I recommend including them if you can! 

Blood Orange and Avocado Salad 

Ingredients

3/4 cup arugula

1/2 cup baby spinach

1 blood orange

1/2 avocado, cubed

1 Tbsp goat cheese, crumbled

1/3 shallot, sliced thinly

1 Tbsp thinly sliced almonds

2 tsp apple cider vinegar

1/2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Freshly ground salt + black pepper, to taste

Directions

Rinse and dry arugula and spinach as needed, and spread the leaves over a plate or in a tupperware (if taking salad to go). Peel the blood orange, removing as much white pith as possible. With a sharp knife, slice in half alongside the lines of the orange slices, then turn each half so that its flat side faces down. Thinly slice each half, perpendicular to the lines of the orange slices; this is what will make cute little fans out of each slice. Top salad greens with orange slices, avocado, goat cheese crumbles, shallot slices, and almonds. Time permitting, shake the apple cider vinegar and extra virgin olive oil together in a separate container until the mixture emulsifies. If you are short on time, you may instead pour the vinegar over the salad, followed by the olive oil.* Lastly, grind the salt and pepper over the top of your salad. Take to go or enjoy in the moment. :) 

*I just learned from an article in Cook’s Illustrated that for this kind of “lazy person’s vinaigrette” (usually how I do salad dressings tbh) it’s best to add the vinegar first because oil penetrates and wilts greens more easily. The vinegar can thus act as a protectant between the oil and greens, which allows your salad to last longer before lunch time! I’m personally very excited by this information because I have always tossed in the olive oil first, and had no idea that it’s better to add the vinegar first.

CANTLON: PACK HOST THE BRUINS AGAIN FRIDAY NIGHT

        VERSUS     

BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - During the first six weeks of the regular season, the Hartford Wolf Pack are rarely in the confines of the XL Center. On Friday night, they will have one of their rare home games over the span against a familiar opponent, the Providence Bruins, who return to the XL Center as part of a weekend home-and-home between the two teams. On opening night, the Pack knocked off the Bruins 4-2 and are coming off a tough road loss, the first of this young season, on Wednesday night, 5-3, against the Binghamton Devils. “We were happy with our early results, but it's still early for us. It's still just two games,“ remarked head coach Keith McCambridge last Sunday. Tuesday saw the Devils score in the first and last minute of the first period. Defenseman John Gilmour said that he has to get on the puck and want it more than the other guy on Sunday after the Laval game. The goaltending of Dustin Tokarski immediately caught the team's eye. “He clearly impressed us the way he stopped shot. We are very confident having him and (Marek) Mazanec back there,” said Gilmour. Scoring in the first period has been good so far through the early part of the new season, a 180 degree turn from last season. “It's so critical to get off to quick starts. These two games, we have to keep it going to have success,” Gilmour, who saw the Pack outscored by a wide margin in the first period last season and got caught in that pattern on Wednesday night, said. The team's ability to respond quickly to their opponents is something else that he likes in this group. “It shows character and resiliency, and to see it in a young group like that, it's very good to see.” Tokarski is a seasoned AHL vet having had stops in Norfolk, St. John’s, Syracuse, Hamilton, San Diego, and last year in Lehigh Valley. Tokarski is as competitive as the next player, but clearly becoming a mentor is as valuable a tool he could bring to the rink along with his pads, stick, and glove. “You take it as a responsibility. Everybody is young once. As you get older, as I am, you try to do a bit extra to help the young guys to improve, get better and get to the NHL. That’s part of the job.” The Pack then will embark on a four-game road trip Saturday over seven days starting in Providence Saturday night. They then have their Canadian road trip to play Laval next Wednesday followed by Belleville on Friday and then finishing with Toronto. The Pack then return with a mid-week game against Lehigh Valley and their first meeting of the season with their intra-state and franchise rivals, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before taking off on a five-game road trip. NEWS & NOTES: Former Yale Bulldog goalie Alex Lyon was sent to Lehigh Valley on Wednesday by the Flyers. Joel Bouchard clearly exudes the sense that the new Laval coach is looking to buy into the new pro game model and working it to convey that to a thoroughly revamped Laval Rocket. “We worked very hard, but it’s a major learning curve for results. This was a good learning experience for this team and our guys. You have to learn to play back-to-back games quickly, and that is an adjustment at this level. We have to learn to stick with it. It's gonna take time, but I will say they work hard, no complaints there. We got to learn better puck management, and that will take time. We went with a little more veteran lineup up front because we really have little experience on the backline right now. We got one unit. We have a Czech, Michael Moravcik, and on another, Cale Fleury, they will grow with time.” Bouchard seemed to wear all the hats in Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL), about 40 minutes North of Laval. He was the owner/GM, and the head coach. Things are a little more streamlined in the AHL. “It's an adjustment for me too. I played in the American League, so I know what it's all about, too. I still do a lot here. My number one job is to help make these guys good pro’s, and it’s a new challenge and I’m ready to help them get to Montreal.” Hartford holds very strong memories for Bouchard who played here for half a season in 2005-06 under Ryan McGill, who's now the assistant coach in Las Vegas. He's coming off as a frightening medical situation having survived meningitis. “It was a good experience for me, and a real turning point in my playing career. It got me back to the NHL. Ryan McGill, Nicky Fotiu, and Al Coates believed in me. It wasn’t long, but I was able to get my confidence back playing here. As we were driving here from Providence, I really thought about it that it was some of the best hockey I ever played and I was focused and dialed in and got back to the Rangers. It's fun to be back here.” Bouchard is going to be quite interesting to watch this season. He may set a new coaching fashion statement too. He’s the first coach to carry all his gear in a backpack. Could a Roots commercial be in Bouchard’s future (Roots is a major Canadian clothing store)? PLAYERS ON THE MOVE  The Sound Tigers lost out on a top talent as Jan Kovar, a free agent signee from the KHL, failed to accept an assignment to Bridgeport. He was waived and brought out of his $2 million dollar deal and is returning to Russia. The Islanders also sent back Tanner Fritz. Four more AHLer’s have signed in Europe. Brendan Kichton goes from Charlotte to SaiPa (Finland-FEL). Former Ranger draft pick, Ethan Werek, goes from Belleville to HC Ocelari Trinec (Czech Republic-CEL). Henrik Happala leaves Springfield to go to Tappara (Finland-FEL). Ex-Pack, Eric Selleck, goes from Belleville to HC Banska Bystrica (Slovakia-SLEL) making 83 AHL players who are heading over to Europe to Asia. Ex-CT Whale, TJ Hensick, signs with Toledo (ECHL) and a former Whale teammate, Kris Newbury, was claimed off waivers from Brampton (ECHL) by the Jacksonville (FL) IceMen on Thursday. ECHL camps are winding down as they start their regular season this week. Cut from Maine Jesse Schwartz (UCONN-HE), Enfield’s Robbie Baillargeon is traded from Orlando Solar Bears to the Tulsa Oilers, and Brady Vail, who was in Pack camp, is traded from Maine to Cincinnati. Other cuts include ex-QU goalie star, Eric Hartzell, who was let go by Tulsa, and Charlie Millen, the son of ex-Hartford Whaler, Greg Millen, was cut by Worcester. Former Sound Tiger and Rangers draft pick, Daniel Maggio, is sent to Norfolk (ECHL) by Tucson. Another son of an ex-Whaler, Carter Sandlak, whose father is Jim Sandlak, retires from Greenville to become a referee (AHL) and linesman (ECHL) this season. Ex-Pack, Henrik Tallinder, whose four games didn’t earn him a Rangers contract, went back home and after two seasons with TPS Turku, retires from the game. Situated at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California, the Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542 – the first time a European expedition had ever set foot on what later became the West Coast of the United States.

The first thing that greets you as you drive up into the national park is the fantastic Cabrillo Visitor Center, which in addition to its useful outdoor signage, viewing deck spots and smorgasbord of visitor information on hand, also sports a fantastically well done museum section, containing a fascinating array of carefully preserved items, information and interactive exhibits.

Then of course there is the unmissable limestone heroic statue of Cabrillo himself, a present to the USA from the Portuguese government. The original statue which was handed over by the Portuguese ambassador in 1938 was executed by sculptor Alvaro de Bree, with it weighing in at 6,400 kg and measuring 4.3 m in height.

However, weathering as a result of its exposed position dictated that the original sandstone model needed to eventually be replaced, and so in 1988 the (still striking) limestone replica that you see on site today made its appearance.

Interesting fact: During World War II the original Cabrillo Monument site was completely off-limits to the public thanks to the Point Loma Peninsula’s reservation for military purposes (San Diego is strategically incredibly important to the United States Navy), but this worked out well in the end – following the war, the national monument’s area was significantly enlarged thanks to work by both presidents Eisenhower and Ford.

Standing at around 57 hectares in size, the Cabrillo National Monument is also home to a number of other fascinating points of interest, like the Old Point Loma Lighthouse – one of the oldest lighthouses to ever operate on the West Coast of the United States of America.

And while this particular lighthouse now operates as a walk-in museum attraction only, just down the hill is the still very much in operation New Point Loma Lighthouse as well. There there are also the old gun batteries and retired radio station that houses an interesting the military history of the area exhibition.

In terms of nature activities, there are a number of short trails throughout the Cabrillo National Monument, including the popular two-mile long Bayside Trail that takes you through one one of the last remaining remnants of coastal sage scrub habitat in the world. It also in the process gives you spectacular views of Sand Diego Bay and the city beyond, Ballast Point (where Cabrillo landed), sandstone cliffs, and if the season is right, even some snow on the tops of the mountains!

The Coastal Tidepool Trail on the other hand takes you along its winding path down to the rocky intertidal area of the monument – which is incidentally one one of the best-protected and most easily accessible of rocky intertidal areas in southern California. Given the incredibly diverse and thriving animal communities to be found in the tidal pool area, this section also then happens to be one  of the more interesting spots of the park to pay a visit to.

Oh, and as if all this wasn’t yet enough, given its high elevation, the Cabrillo National Monument is also a brilliant whale watching spot – the perfect place in fact to watch migrating Gray Whales pass by from December through February!

So pretty hard not to include this as one of the many tourist things to do here in San Diego then!
