Honestly, as an aspiring artist who drew cartoons in school, threw himself into learning to sail, and was last seen trying to make the RNZYS Youth Development Squad by 2000, for fanfic purposes I could absolutely see grown-up present-day Mike Lucas being Jérémie’s friend and colleague as an official event/team cartoonist who knows the high-performance side well enough to draw his comics accurately.

If Jérémie started in the IMOCA world and Mike stayed focused on inshore and the America's Cup, maybe they met through the Volvo Ocean Race?

If they were ever hired by different teams in the same competition, they would probably do “cartoon combat” feuds like the “Eagle vs Kiwi” cartoons that Oracle and ETNZ supporters were drawing in 2017, but just in a spirit of friendly competition rather than actual anger. And they also might have collaborated to create comics together like the fictional Cartoon Guide to the America's Cup from “Taurine Apocalypse Bermudian”.

(Meanwhile in the personification-verse, he could follow the same path, but also be a lifelong friend of the original Black Magic brothers [Brian and Barry]— I might try a fanfic that inserts them into the book.)

I think one downside of Cup Magic being kids’ historical fiction set in the recent past at such a specific event is that there already ARE real kids who were part of the AC 1995 story, who are now grown-up, so they are sort of kept at arms-length from the fictional protagonist just like all of the other still-living real people.

And that’s not really noticeable with the adults, because how close are most kids with their parents’ co-workers, really? But here we’re told the fictional Mike Lucas is hanging out with James and Sarah-Jane Blake and Emma and Nick Blackman, and that they call themselves “the Cup Kids”. (Oddly, Grayson Coutts, in the same age group, is never mentioned at all until the final celebrations.)

However, Mike doesn’t describe his interactions with them in anything like the kind of detail he uses to talk about hanging out with his fictional friends. It’s just things like “I heard Sarah-Jane and Emma practice a song they wrote”, whereas with his invented friends Hone and Lucy, we get conversations and escapades transcribed.

I can see why Susan Battye might feel weird about fictionalizing too many details of the childhoods of people who are now adults, (especially the Blakes, who have lived most of their lives in the public eye, including when grieving after their father’s murder), and saying they had a fictional BFF who never really existed. Such an approach might require her to talk with them and get their permission, and IIRC the Blakes now live in England rather than NZ, so that could have been hard.

So instead we get this arms-length approach where we don’t get the sense that Mike is very close to people who are supposedly his good friends.
