Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway & Custer State Park - Custer, SD
Tumblr media
Today was a big day, we drove the scenic loop, played a little bit at Sylvan Lake, then drove through Custer State Park. It was a bit smoky, but we still managed to get some great views.

As soon as we got onto the Scenic Loop, traffic came to a dead stop. A herd of bison were crossing the road, the herd was huge and it took a good 10-15 minutes for traffic to start moving again. Lots of calves and some really big guys, too. Great start to the day!

We stopped and took a look at George's profile - a visit to Mt. Rushmore is scheduled for later in the week. We then continued through the tunnels and the beautiful drive along the byway, finally reaching the entry to Sylvan Lake. We were lucky to find a couple of parking spots close to the lake. We spent a couple of hours hanging out at the lake - kayaking, SUPing, swimming, and hiking around the lake. Beautiful spot, except for the pesky biting flies!

We packed up and left the lake, made our way through a couple more tunnels and finished up with a drive through Custer State Park. We were ready to head back to camp for happy hour.

Custer State Park

The Needles Eye Tunnel in Custer State Park
The Needles Eye Tunnel in Custer State Park
The Needles Highway is one of the many scenic drives in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This section of Highway 87 is part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway and is located in Custer State Park. The Needles Highway stretches from the junction of Highway 16A in the east to Sylvan Lake in the west. My favorite part of this drive is the Needles Eye Tunnel. The roads were very curvy and had 3 tunnels. Most of the hwys in the Black Hills make up the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway where he envisioned building a road throughout the national forest. Though engineers at that time said it could not be built, in 1996, his dream was realized. So many of the rock structures appear as if the tiniest vibration or strong gusts of wind can easily topple them over. Amazing they have stayed in tact all this time.
