Prefectural Capital (県庁所在地) : Toyama (富山市)

Toyama Prefecture is a part of the central region of Japan, also known as Hokuriku (北陸). Takaoka city is the birthplace of Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of Doraemon, with many Doraemon-themed delights for visitors. Toyama lies along the Sea of Japan and includes part of the spectacular Northern Japan Alps. Gourmet seafood, idyllic scenery, cultural attractions, and a slower pace are all easily accessible by shinkansen from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Toyama is an important rice-producing area, as well as sourcing hydroelectric power and minerals from the nearby mountains that serve as a basis for chemical, textile, machinery, pulp and paper, and steel industries. The capital city of Toyama and Takaoka have long been the chief center for the production of patent medicine and drugs.

The Gokayama region is an area within the city of Nanto in Toyama Prefecture. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its traditional gassho-zukuri houses (similar to Shirakawa-go in Gifu). The region is secluded within the mountains in the upper reaches of the Shogawa River, thus preserving this unique traditional architectural style. Gokayama's lifestyle and culture remained very traditional for many years after the modernization of the majority of the country, and many of the houses here are over 300 years old.

Ainokura is the largest of these villages, with nearly 20 gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Many are still private residences, although some have been converted into restaurants, museums, and minshuku, where you can stay overnight at a farm house. With less development and more difficulty to reach this secluded village, there is less tourist traffic than some of the other villages. There are visiting hours attached to the village to avoid disturbing the residents (8:30-17:00), thus helping to preserve the quiet life in this village.

Folk dances, music utilizing unique, traditional instruments, and special washi paper techniques characterize this area. You can listen to the sasara, an instrument made of over a hundred wooden clappers strung together, which is symbolic of the region and a popular souvenir. There are also washi paper workshops where you can try your hand at making washi paper.

Regional Cuisine - 郷土料理 Kombujime - 昆布締め

Kombujime (also kobujime) is a local Toyama dish made by sandwiching light-tasting foods such as whitefish (most commonly marlin) and wild vegetables between sheets of kelp (or kombu). Other popular fillings include other whitefish, shrimp, tofu, and beef. The prefecture boasts the highest kelp consumption, and thus kombu is also widely available at supermarkets.

The technique used to make kombujime (which means "kombu curing") enhances the taste of the sashimi through aging the fish between two sheets of kombu. This technique softens the fish texture and the glutamates from the kelp transfer over to the fish, accentuating its flavor.

Toyama Dialect・Toyama-ben・富山弁

Toyama-ben is also called Etchu-ben (越中弁), and consists of West (Gosei, 呉西), East (Gotō, 呉東), and Gokayama (五箇山) dialects. The dialect is a combination of sounds and features close to Kansai and Tohoku dialects, but still quite different from the other dialects in the Hokuriku area.

hypmic has a reputation of having weird character names in the jp fandom. can I ask how hypmic character names are different from other jp media's? sorry if this is an odd question

I wouldn't say their names are unlike those of characters in other Japanese media, but many are spelled in unique ways with rare kanji. As a result, a lot of native Japanese speakers seeing these names for the first time have to take a second to go, "Wait, how is that read?" instead of automatically seeing it and knowing what it is.

For example, Sasara is not uncommon as a girl's name, but it's usually written like 沙々羅/佐々良 or some variation that preserves a similar meaning of slenderness, slightness, or daintiness. Most of these kanji are either common in day-to-day writing or in names, meaning it's very easy to look at those names and recognize them as "sasara." At the same time, a sasara (spelled 簓) is also a type of folk instrument--which is probably where our Sasara's name comes from, tying him back into the theme of entertainment--but this kanji is used for precious little else. I couldn't even type it w/ my computer's kanji conversion program; I had to google "ささら楽器" (sasara musical instrument) and copy/paste the kanji from the Wikipedia article haha. Because it's so uncommon, it may cause a double take when someone sees it for the first time.

Depending on tone and genre, characters in Japanese media may have realistic names, non-Japanese-sounding made-up names, Japanese-sounding made-up names, or realistic names with thematic kanji. Most Hypmic characters fall into the first and fourth camps.

A detailed record of Kosuke Furuhata, and what has led him to where he is today

5 years old: 

Diagnosed with asthma: He had his first attack during the winter, so he had to go to the hospital. His condition got better later in life, but he has to keep an inhaler just in case since the rap battles get very intense.

6 years old: 

Starts getting academic pressure from parents: Since he wasn’t allowed to do any extreme physical activities at the time

Starts violin and piano: Again, for academic and health purposes, Kosuke at the time really couldn;t say no, though it’s more so that his parent just signed him up for the lessons one day

10 years old:

Starts going to cram school: he goes to cram school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This gives him time to just walk around a bit on the streets afterwards.

His asthma slowly starts to get better

12 years old: 

Starts wanting to pursue art and asks parents, he gets rejected: Its about around this time that he started to go around and look at paintings and sculptures around the area. He would go to libraries and read about the creators, or just look online. Of course, he was shot down when he brought the topic up with his parents.

15 years old:

Meets Yamada Ichiro as his tutor, they become friends: Ichiro is not the best student, he also doesn’t have the money or time to go to cram school. Kosuke tutors him on Tuesdays and Fridays, and they start hanging around after school, which bleeds into the weekend

16 years old: 

Moves to his own apartment away from his parents

Starts to secretly take steps to getting into Gedai: He gets himself a part time job and saves up money to go to a different cram school over the weekend 

Stops taking instrumental lessons

17 years old:

Beginning of H Act

Receives his mic as a gift from Ichiro: Because the mics are the only legal weapon, he and Ichiro help him get one, just to be safe

Meets Kuko and they also become close: When Kosuke starts learning how to rap, Ichiro introduces the two to each other. Kosuke never gets involved with the Stairway to Heaven thing though

Gets involved with more rap battles

Becomes part of the TDD: After Kuko and Sasara left, Kosuke was initially called to be backup and showed off his skills. He was initially apprehensive of joining as he felt like he was replacing the other two, but he eventually felt like part of the group.

The TDD breaks up: What happens happens, only this time, Kosuke simply couldn’t be there to help. His parents somehow found out about his rapping and art studies, so he got the chew out of a lifetime. And his supplies were trashed along with complete radio silence from his family afterwards.

Loses contact with Kuko: After a bit of calling man messaging, Kosuke relents and believes that Kuko wants nothing to do with him either

Takes/ passes Gedai exam: Seriously, Kosuke passes out a few times afterwards, he’s been stressing over the results ever since the exam finished, he also hasn’t been taking care of himself (well, less than usual)

18 years old

Goes to study at Gedai: Great deal of pressure on himself, by himself, enough said

Maintains friendship with TDD: He and Ichiro have no reason to be on bad terms, he is a bit apprehensive around Samatoki though. He chats with Ramuda and Jakurai semi-frequently too.

Starts looking for a sharehouse because his apartment is far from Ueno

19 year old:

Moves in with Natsuki and Haruto

Receives mics from Chou-ku

Other facts:

At the DRBs, he has an inhaler incase of a an attack

Does oil painting and so half of his room is extremely neat, the other half…

Did Ichiro get him hooked on manga? Yes, yes he did

14. sasara's verse with rosho in Aikata: deep sigh... im holding myself back from ranting for 10 paragraphs about this, but i genuinely think this showcases all their flaws as partners. it's not atrocious or anything, it's just. their styles cancel out in a way that reflects all their fears come true. it's cute tho

13. Survival of the Illest: Maybe I just didn't like the live performance, so I won't be able to rank it for sure until we get the official version of this and the BAT ones, but given Dotsuhon live performances tend to be even better than the studio versions, I'm inclined to say I straight up don't like his verse here lol?

12. Wara Osaka: ......yeah this is just thoroughly meh to me. Gives me the same vibes as his verse with Rosho in Aikata. Just not interesting. At least the song itself is really fun for something to vibe with without demanding that much attention.

11. Summit of Divisions (the bit from the leaders section in the trailer): Literally the most forgettable verse in this part of the song. Not bad, just thoroughly unremarkable both in the context of Sasara's verses and in the fact that all the other leaders have STELLAR verses here. Structure wise it makes sense going into Kuko's final verse, which probably only hits AS hard BECAUSE sasara's bit passes right by you, but still.

10. his parts in N☆PS: This song is fantastic, but Sasara is really just here as the glue to tie things together- the real standouts in this one are Rei and Rosho. Still, special shotout to him counting down in a speech.

9. sasara's solo verse in Aikata: perfectly standard sasara rap. this is like the baseline of what should be expected from this clown imo. the lyrics are kinda toothless but the way he delivers it doesn't disappoint

8. Joy for Struggle: It's only just a bit above The Sasara Standard Of Quality. Real good, real fun, takes advantage of the fantastic instrumentals of the song, and his confidence carries him a long way- but let's be honest, Ichiro sort of wiped the floor with him on this one

7. His first verse in Summit of Divisions: Judged solely as rap his bit here is nothing special, but in the context of the song itself, it's one of the most fun parts, he really leans into the vibe of the song by giving a little breather that's still genuinely fun and keeps the energy going into Rosho's verse.

6. Helter Skelter: much like everything else about sasara in helter skelter, his verse here is INTERESTING... he drops a lot of his usual flair and instead delivers a very, hm, i don't know enough about rap to describe it; it's very technically impressive compared to his usual stuff? I wouldn't be surprised if this is a peek at what he sounded like in Ikebukuro. If he'd carried this energy into Joy for Struggle it would have at least been a more interesting fight

5. Division Battle Anthem +: ...I think Sasara may well be the ONLY person who perfomed BETTER in Rap Battle than in Battle Anthem. I still prefer his verse here, but it's very style over sustance. That in no way means it's bad tho because absolutely NO ONE has a bad or even mediocre verse in this song, and I appreciate his kanto-ben joke its cute

4. Division Rap Battle +: I don't actually like his verse here much, but relistening I have to admit it's actually very, hmm... it's sasara going all out with style, he does SO much in just 20 seconds. In Tragic Transistor he calls himself a southpaw rapper, and I don't know enough about rap to know if he's bullshitting or not, but this verse makes it hard to argue with him.

3. Tragic Transistor: He does not shut up for a single SECOND in this entire song, and lets none of that time go to waste. The song itself barely changes at all, and the choruses are relatively speaking very short, so he carries the whole entire three minutes by himself without it EVER getting boring. He manages to rap for a whole song about himself, without actually SAYING anything meaningful about himself, and yet STILL asserting dominance WHILE being a clown. this song is a joy to rap

2. Aikata(s): Unironically fantastic, which goes for rosho's parts as well. in many shonen Fights Between Allies (tm), i feel like even if they SAY they're not holding back, they end up being like "oh it doesnt matter who wins, what matters is that we're enjoying the battle and giving it our all" etc. well this is NOT the case here, they are HONEST TO GOD BOTH FIGHTING TO WIN, and sasara genuinely throws out some lines i wouldn't have thought he'd say to rosho. just a great battle imo

*a play on words. a "sasara" is a bamboo whisk (as well as musical instrument). sasara's fondly joking that osaka's pandora's box is cheap, as well as saying you don't want to mess with him

** the first line here is a reference to some famous, *literally* slapstick manzai comedy. I really can't explain this to you. just feel it in your heart. the second line is a bunch of common tsukkomi lines, you hear them from rosho quite often

***The original word here is "Kamigata", essentially just a dated term for kansai, similar to how "naniwa" is an old name for what became osaka. most crucially, this also includes the Kyoto area.

****King of Minami" is a manga series that's been running since 1992, set around a debt collector in the minami area of osaka. This area includes Dotonbori, where the famous glico board is.

HypMic Band AU

Once again, I gather weird ideas from wandering a Discord server far too often...

Also partially inspired by the visual on this video.

Note: The bands keep their division names from canon, even though their backstories have changed to some degree or other.

The Dirty Dawg (henceforth TDD) was once a hugely popular band, which produced music of several genres...but like all bands, it had a rather troubled history behind-the-scenes. Ichiro, Samatoki and Ramuda would frequently fight over who would be the main vocalist. Jakurai would typically watch the others squabble while musing that it was "fascinating", instead of being their mediator. In order to properly mediate, Sasara and Kuko, Samatoki and Ichiro's previous bandmates respectively, joined as temporary members for the sake of smoothing relations over.

One time, these fights became so terrible, Ramuda simply schemed to break the band up...and so he did, alienating the others in the process.

However, this was 3 years ago now and TDD is but a distant memory. Nobody really remembers why TDD fought, not even them, although there is some animosity between the former TDD + 2 when they're involved in the same things. This is where we begin our story...

Ichiro: Vocalist with no real specialty (although he is rather partial to hip-hop). Writes his own tracks (like you see in Rhyme Anima ep. 2), although he does let his brothers write and perform their own solo music for concerts from time to time to placate them. Occasionally will play percussion roles, such as castanets or cymbals, when required.

Jiro: Guitarist (typically electric guitar, but is not averse to acoustic either).

Saburo: Pianist/organist. Can also be called upon to do electronic tracks with music-making software, plus sound and lighting for the concerts.

Samatoki: Vocalist, specialising in gangsta rap, although he does has a rather eclectic list of instruments he can play which is not well-known outside the green room (such as the harmonica). Plays the role of a gangster for his concerts with the rest of MTC (which the fans lap up like crazy). Wants to tour as much as possible to search for his sister.

Jyuto: Typically plays the melody to Samatoki's vocals or the backing to Samatoki's melody. If given a solo song, he'll play the trumpet.

Riou: Drummer and general tagger-along for when the band needs a third instrument. Can only play acoustic instruments - Sasara accidentally left an Otamatone in an MTC dressing room one time and Riou broke it, just by trying to experiment with it, which is why all electronic instruments were banned for him in the first place. MTC will typically practise their songs under the stars on clear nights because of him.

Ramuda: Vocalist, specialising in pop. Also plays the triangle and xylophone/marimba for their sparkly sounds.

Gentaro: Songwriter. Will randomly pull out an instrument - sometimes a rare one, like a shamisen - and claim he knows how to play it...and typically, he will be right (scarily enough).

Dice: Percussionist who'll practise on objects he finds anywhere. Secretly knows how to play the violin and the piano, which is why he's in the FP band, but prefers to not do so. Also played a grass whistle for one song and the fans went nuts for it, so FP is trying to incorporate it into their songs more.

Jakurai: Pianist/keyboard player. The only member of TDD who doesn't do vocals as often as the others, due to his low register. Also learnt how to play the theremin, due to Ramuda taking an interest in it at one point before the TDD breakup.

Hifumi: Vocalist, specialising in karaoke versions of tunes and electronic songs (although he tries not to use autotune if he can help it). Give him basically any instrument and he will nail it, given enough time.

Doppo: Synthesiser player/drummer. When enraged, he pulls off a mean impromptu drum solo.

Sasara: Plays absurd concert instruments like the kazoo, although he'll riddle his songs with puns if they have vocals. Typically when he's involved, you'll see concert staff bring things you wouldn't expect on to the stage, like empty rubbish bins, so that he can use them as instruments. (He also once used a recording of Rosho's rhythmic snoring as a backing track, but no one ever figured out it was Rosho's...not even the guy himself...) He and Rosho occasionally play as one-man bands in their spare time to cheer up nearby people. Don't underestimate him though - because of Rosho's propensity to break down in the middle of a performance, Sasara has learnt every instrument Rosho has, albeit to a lesser degree than he has (although Sasara doesn't showcase such talent on stage and deliberately denies he can play those instruments when asked, so he can mess with people).

Rosho: Plays the viola, clarinet and the piano/keyboard. Does not take the role of vocals often, due to stage fright.

Rei: Plays large orchestral instruments, such as the tuba and the double bass. Also played the harp once, to freak people out.

Kuko: Mainly a percussionist - his specialty is the taiko drum.

Jyushi: Vocalist and guitarist, specialising in visual-kei rock. Uses the White Falcon given to him by Hitoya.

Hitoya: Bassist and backup guitarist. Also knows basic piano melodies for some songs if required.

idk if it already canon but what kind of instruments would each character play

Ichiro: Canonically knows how to use DJ decks, but probably dabbles a little in the guitar and taught Jiro at first. He can ‘play the piano’ but only to create tracks on music software and play other instruments in.

Jiro: Canonically knows how to play the guitar, and I assume pretty well. He’s working his coordination up with drums, but he’s having a hard time using all of his body for it.

Saburo: Probably learned classical piano but struggles with jazz or swung rhythms. He’s got good sight reading and plays as written, but is hopeless when it comes to improvising when he’s not rapping.

Samatoki: Bought a bass and never plays it for long, but would make a good bassist. He has the dedication to be really good, but just doesn’t have the time. It sits collecting dust at home.

Jyuto: Played the saxophone up until his teens. Jyuto’s not a sightreader but he can feel rhythms really easily and is adaptable into any ensemble. When in a group, he often takes charge.

Rio: Literally only learned the trumpet as a kid cause ‘that’s a military instrument thing, right?’ Asides from that, he’d also be pretty good on the drums if he stopped counting measures in his head.

Ramuda: Learned the piano so he could show off. He only ever plays pop songs and can’t read music. At least he’s good in hearing and picking up keys.

Gentaro: His family couldn’t afford to get him to learn something, and it’s not like now he has any spare time. If he could, he’d want to take up a traditional instrument because it looks fancy. Since he ‘has dexterity from typing’ he might try out a koto.

Dice: Previously rich boy Dice knows quite a few instruments, though he’s rusty on all of them: the violin, piano and cello - he’s his own piano trio! He can identify classical pieces but never baroque, even if people say ‘they all sound the same’. 

Jakurai: For a tall fellow, he was pretty much stuck learning the cello in highschool orchestra, though he started off with the piano. He’s actually awful on the cello so he’ll never admit that he ‘learned’.

Hifumi: Does the recorder in kindergarten count? Because that’s the only thing he’s confident in. He tried to move up to the flute but he gave up on that after a while.

Doppo: A bassist during his ‘less tired teenage years’. You could even call him ‘good’ at the bass, though he would always have trouble with reading tabs. He can improvise pretty well.

Kuko: Learned traditional instruments because ‘they’d be the foundation of discipline’. He’s pretty okay with the shamisen though would’ve liked to learn guitar with Ichiro. At least he can vent frustrations out on taiko drums.

Jyushi: Though a vocalist, he’s also proficient in the guitar and piano to help with composition. He’s pretty much self taught and spent most of his time in the music room during school breaktimes.

Hitoya: He was in the orchestra and learned the viola. He would’ve gone with cello like Jakurai but he was a bit too short to handle a full sized cello at the time so he settled.

Sasara: The kazoo.

Rosho: A very classically trained pianist and violinist. He had strict lessons as a kid and was way too relieved when he stopped in college. Still, he wishes he practiced just a little bit after since he’s lost a lot of ability now.

Rei: Not someone who learned an instrument since he was more interested in other things. He could at least identify notes on a piano but wouldn’t know what to ever play if asked to do something.

2. First impressions of the characters? Who stuck out the most?

YESS THIS ONE IS FUN OKAY SO

Ramuda and saburo were the ones that stuck out the most for me!! I thought they were cute and liked the way they sang. Plus I was in love with Ramuda’s design👁👁

For each character (SOME OF THESE ARE THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I THINK NOW LOL😭😭):

Ichiro: dont really remember what I thought of him :(

Jiro: he’s kinda ugly…. (LMAO I WAS SO WRONG FORGIVE ME JIRO ILY)

Saburo: ohhh he’s so cute! His voice is nice

Samatoki: he’s pale. Looks scary ngl😥 love his voice though

Jyuto: looks like he has a high pitched voice (I was right lol). Why does he make that weird face a lot

I agree! Catch me vibin to Osaka Dreamin Night 24/7 haha I might be a little biased since I really love Sasara’s rap style but Rosho and Rei also have styles that are distinctively unique but come together really nicely! They use a lot of traditional Japanese instruments and sounds which I think also makes them stand out in a good way (Gentaro is quaking). Also, their voices melt together so seamlessly but you can still tell who’s who!

Honestly in my opinion they’re one of the most cohesive groups in terms of sound alone. Their voices fit so well I love it! I’m really excited to listen to more of their tracks~
