y’all before talking about jokes in house md that wouldn’t fly today, i beg you to check the writers first.

much (not all, but much) of house md was written by the gays themselves, and they deserve to have their work understood in its full context before it’s assumed to be genuinely homophobic.

there is, of course, nuance regarding how the majority of people would have received these lines and how the writers were certainly aware of that. but, still, a good amount of house md was meant to have in-jokes, made by queer writers for queer viewers.

whenever i think about how sara hess, a lesbian, wrote the most queer episodes that could have aired on network tv in the 2000s, i explode. how do you write “you’d be surprised what you can live with?” and wilson literally proposing to house in public as a joke and neither of them mention it again, toxic lesbian patients that literally mirror house and wilson, house buying flowers for wilson to prove cuddy likes him (sureeee), and thirteen having one night stands with women to cope with her terminal illness and having to deal with one of her one night stands dying as well, HELLO????

"Private Lives" is such an absurd episode

it's got everything you could dream of

Chase is coming to terms with the fact that he is hot. He went speed-dating with House and Wilson, and pretended to be a jerk to prove that women liked him for his personality, not his looks. He lost that bet, and when he said "I'm not THAT attractive!" Wilson's response was "You really kinda are" which is pretty funny. Also House refers to him as "pretty boy" but that's par for the course.

He is also very happy about being able to aid in Wilson's quest to embarrass House

Wilson was in a porno, as a speaking role, so when House found out he used it to his advantage (mock Wilson). The movie posters in his office were replaced with posters for Feral Pleasures. Everywhere he goes, people tell him to "be not afraid" or talk about how the forest nymphs taught him how to please a woman. He is mortified. The hospital has a giant banner dedicated to Feral Pleasures in the lobby. Cuddy gets that taken down, but really she should have stopped this madness much sooner.

I've been on and off debating this for a few months, but finally decided to do it:

Everything about this show-- but specifically the character of Thirteen-- has given me an ability to put things into words that I never imagined I would be able to express, let alone connect with other people over. It's been such a comfort for me over the past... almost year and a half, especially so now that I've been thrown headfirst into the reality of being chronically ill and getting diagnosed with a genetic condition over the last few months.

For the rest of my life the number thirteen will hold such lovely significance for me. A lucky number. A symbol of a character I relate to, take comfort in, and adore (and who happens to be one of the best-written lgbt+ characters of her era, let alone when compared to a lot of present day characters). And, most importantly, a symbol of my own personal healing and growth (especially because writing In the Dirt has been so incredibly healing for me so far & will continue to be).

Lucky thirteen, indeed.

i'm going to ramble for a minute because i am both greys anatomy's biggest fan while simultaneously being their biggest hater and i have a lot to say.

the show is terrible. i love everything up to s8 and then tap out after s11. i physically cannot watch anything after derek dies. i've watched up to s16 completely and now for the last 4 seasons have been keeping up through spoilers and clips on tiktok but i cannot will myself to keep going. and it's not because it's been renewed for s21 but because it's just so bad.

the last good season was in 2012, which is when it should have ended. the plane crash should have been the end of the series. it would have been a good year to end it. private practice ended in 2012, house md ended in 2012. those shows knew when enough was enough, and given the fact that private practice was a spin off of greys anatomy let's me know that the show runners know when enough is enough, they just don't know how to figure it out for greys.

i understand that it's one of those shows that fans are clinging to because it's a comfort show, but recycling storylines and character arcs just aren't cutting it anymore. they've killed off all of their good characters and are now trying to patch it up with characters that will never compare to previous cast members. they have no original storylines left because there's nothing left to do. and don't even get me started on the fact that they've been trying to replace derek since the moment he died. i don't even think meredith got a full season before they were throwing new love interests at her, and while yes, i liked other more love interests than other ones, there's no replacing derek. yes derek might have been a walking mcredflag but i am a derek shepherd girlie 100% and killing him off should have been the end. like if they were going to extend it past the plane crash, derek's death should have been the end.

another thing that bothers me - ellen pompeo's status on the show. she is the main character. if the main character has to step back because her brain "feels like scrambled eggs" and becoming a recurring guest star rather than in the main cast, that should be a major sign that it's over. enough is enough. you can tell in the last few seasons that she's become so monotone and robotic. she's not meredith anymore. it's obvious that she doesn't want to be there, and yet she keeps getting roped in to more episodes.

like i understand keeping the show going for the super fans who will binge the entire series and for the new watchers who started watching the newer seasons but it's to a point where seeing the announcements for another season actually angers me. bringing back old characters doesn't change how shitty the show is. did i love the beach scenes during the covid season? yes. do i love that they've brought addison back a few times recently? yes. was arizona's episode last week make me a little excited? perhaps. but it's not enough.

rewatched the lesbian bubonic plague house episode written by our lord and savior sara hess she was crazy for writing the line “i love her. i want her to stay.” about max donating her liver to hannah so that she would guilt her into not leaving her. TOXIC GAY PEOPLE THE SHOW. even cameron was like “damn” and she’s the icon of guilting people. house was shocked that max would donate her liver to save her girlfriend without any second thought. meanwhile house sacrifices himself multiple times for wilson. i.e. to save amber in wilson’s heart. house also begs and tries to guilt trip wilson to do chemo in season 8 because (get this) HE LOVES HIM AND WANTS HIM TO STAY. jesus fucking christ.
