Girls Like Girls Like Boys Do (Nothing New)
@stevieweek day 5: AU
rating: mature | wc: 4k | cw: allusions to underage sex, though fade to black and no more explicit than the show itself; period-typical homophobia, misogyny, and ableism

Notes: This fic basically posits and explore the question: How might Season 1 look different if everything else stayed essentially the same, but Stevie Harrington had been a girl instead? Originally, I planned for the fic to end on a more bittersweet note...but I'm a sap who let this AU run away with me, so not only does this end on a happy note, but it also has a smutty futurefic follow-up coming later on in Stevie Week. So, if you enjoyed this one, be on the look out for that fic as well!
In the fall of 1983, Nancy Wheeler gets assigned as Stevie Harrington’s tutor.
She needs to keep her grades up, to stay on the cheer squad, the girls swim team. And even though Nancy is a year younger, she’s a total whiz at basically, like…every subject, as far as Stevie can tell.
No way she would admit to it later, but, at first…Stevie’s pretty nervous.
She knows how shit she is at school. Her reputation as an airhead has been pretty well established, and though Stevie refuses to let her classmates see how much it bothers her–it really does hurt. It’s not like she doesn’t try. She actually likes the stories in English class…when the other kids in the class read them aloud. But, when the time comes for Stevie to do the reading–the letters seem to rearrange themselves on the page, making it damn near incomprehensible. The numbers in the math are the same way.
So, she braces herself at that first study session. For Nancy to call her stupid, declare her a lost cause.
And Nancy is meticulous and ordered, to the point it becomes intimidating. She has a whole system and multi-colored flash cards. But, while Stevie can see her getting frustrated at times, at the end of the day–Nancy is dedicated to her job. It’s like Stevie’s total lack of academic skills is a puzzle, and she’s determined to solve it. Nancy actually listens when she talks, too, watching Stevie with a look of concentration that makes her flush. She isn’t sure she’s ever had someone pay that kind of attention to her.
So Nancy slows down when she asks, whips up a whole separate study plan that’s just for her. And, before long…Stevie’s getting more answers right than she gets wrong.
October has already rolled around when Stevie informs Carol she invited Nancy and Barbara to eat lunch with them.
“What is she, like your pet project now?” Carol asks, tone incredibly bitchy as she files her nails at the back of Mr. Mundy’s class.
“No! No. Nance is…cool,” Stevie says tentatively.
Nancy is nothing of the sort–a nerd, through and through. But, honestly, Stevie thinks that’s…pretty cool of her. She doesn’t worry, so much, what other people think. Not the way Stevie’s been taught to her entire life, knowing that leaving the house with so much as a hair out of place will end in judgment from her mother and a scathing comment from Carol.
“Puh-lease, Stevie. That girl is in serious need of a makeover.”
Stevie furrows her brow at that. Objectively, Carol is probably right. Nancy isn’t exactly the most fashion forward person at Hawkins High, with her long skirts and cardigan sweaters.
But…Stevie constantly finds her eyes drawn to the other girl. Glancing at Nancy’s chest, even when all she’s wearing is a simple, button down blouse, nothing Stevie would want for her own closet. Admiring the way her skirts hug her butt, despite the fact that they’re plain and floor-length.
Those moments make Stevie flush–not with envy, like she’s used to with Carol, equal parts desire to steal her clothes and jealousy that they fit her so well. No, she feels something…else when she looks at Nancy, something that she hasn’t quite been able to put her finger on.
“Whatever, Carol. Don’t be jealous just because she pulls it off.” Fighting fire with fire is the only way with Carol. More quietly, she admits, “I think she looks really…nice.”
Carol rolls her eyes. “You cannot be serious.”
But she drops the subject after that, moving on to the latest rumor that Heather Holloway and Patrick McKinney are hooking up. She’s needling, Stevie knows, especially since Stevie and Patrick went on a couple dates back in the spring. But, honestly…that’s the best she could have hoped for.
Nancy Wheeler’s bedroom is…nice, Stevie thinks. Just like her clothes, and Nancy herself. It’s girlish and cozy, the walls covered in alternating white and pastel pink stripes, a patchwork quilt on the bed. Her own bedroom, by contrast, is covered in whatever ‘stylish’ floral wallpaper her mother had picked out of a magazine, with curtains patterned to match. Sometimes she feels like she can smell them, giving off the overwhelming sense that she’s suffocating there under a rotting bouquet.
“Stevie,” Nancy’s smile is infectious when she looks up at her, pleased as punch, “you got it right!”
“...Oh, shit? Really?” Stevie leans into her space, brow furrowed as she glances down at the paper. “You mean I actually…don’t completely suck at this?”
“No,” Nancy laughs, light and musical, “not at all. You did it! Keep this up, and you’ll ace the next test without a problem.”
“Holy shit, I actually did it!” Stevie throws her arms around the other girl, something squeezing in her chest when Nancy hugs her back just as fiercely. “God, Nance, I couldn’t have done it without you!”
“You could,” Nancy argues, with a slight shake of her head, “you had it in you all along, I just…helped, a little.”
“Saved my ass is what you did,” Stevie shoots back. Even when she pulls away to look Nancy in the eyes, she keeps one arm curled around her shoulder, giving her a light squeeze. “Thanks, Nance. Thanks for everything.”
Nancy bites her bottom lip, giving Stevie a shy smile. “You’re very welcome, Stevie Harrington.”
She isn’t quite sure what comes over her then–or maybe, some part of her, buried deep, is. The same part that has spent weeks glancing at Nancy Wheeler’s lips, trying to figure out if it’s gloss that makes them such a soft, pretty pink, or if that’s just their natural color combined with the sheen of chapstick.
So, Stevie leans over, and kisses Nancy Wheeler.
Her first thought is that Nancy’s mouth is exactly as soft as it looks. And her second is Oh my God, what the hell did I just do?!
When Stevie pulls back, Nancy blinks at her in surprise, eyes so round and blue.
“It’s fine!” she hurries to insist, her voice high with panic. “It’s–Carol and me, we used to do that kind of thing all the time. Practice at sleepovers, for when we were older, you know? It’s not–it’s not like it has to be a big deal.”
And that part is totally true. Stevie’s been practice kissing with Carol for years, now–sometimes with Tommy, too. They’d been best friends since they were little kids, practically attached at the hip.
…This kiss didn’t really feel like that, though.
“Oh,” Nancy’s nose crinkles with distaste at the mention of Carol’s name, “that was just…practice, then?”
“No, I–I mean. What do you want it to be?”
“I don’t know, I just,” Nancy gnaws at her bottom lip, brow furrowing in concentration. Stevie can practically see the wheels turning in her head, a familiar sight. “I wasn’t upset, when you did that, so. I guess what I want is–to kiss you again? Not to practice for a guy, but just–because I’d like to kiss you.”
A swarm of butterflies flutters in Stevie’s stomach. She swallows hard, eyes dropping down to Nancy’s lips. Anticipation thrums through her like it hasn’t in a really, really long time.
“Yeah. Yeah, okay,” Stevie’s voice sounds rough, deeper than she’s used to. “We can do that. I’d, uh…really like to.”
“Good,” Nancy smiles sweetly, the flash in her eyes unexpectedly eager.
And when she leans in, cups Stevie’s face, and kisses her again, Stevie feels something click into place. Like her progress in all their study meet-ups, it feels like…Nancy has unlocked some hidden part of her, that she hadn’t even realized was buried away inside.
After that, their study sessions usually end in a make out session. Nancy’s still a strict teacher–she won’t let Stevie distract her from their studying all together. But, she believes Stevie deserves a treat for a job well done. Once, Stevie even convinces Nancy to reward her with a kiss every time she gets an answer right.
If that night they take twice as long as they usually do to finish up, Stevie is not complaining.
The next time her parents are away, Stevie invites Nance and Barbara to a pool party at her house. If Tommy and Carol think that’s strange, that it won’t just be the three of them like usual, they don’t say anything about it.
Nancy is standing, totally soaked to the bone, in Stevie’s bedroom. Tommy and Carol are undoubtedly fucking around in her mom’s bedroom, and Barbara has gone home for the night.
So it’s just the two of them.
When Nancy goes to strip off her wet clothes, Stevie spins around to give her some privacy. If Nancy was any other girl, she wouldn’t, but things are…different, between them. And in all their meetups since things have changed, they’ve never done anything more than kissing.
“Stevie?” Nancy calls out.
When Stevie turns to look at her, Nancy peels her shirt off over her head.
Plenty of girls have undressed in front of her–Stevie’s involved in enough sports she basically lives in the girls locker room. But…it’s never felt like this before. Deliberate and charged.
She steps forward, like she’s being pulled in by some magnetic force. Once she’s closed the space, Stevie runs her hands down Nancy’s bare arms, her eyes falling to her chest, where she’s wearing nothing but a plain white bra.
This time, she just lets herself look, eyes drinking their fill, unlike all the subtle, sneaky glances she’s taken before.
“You’re so beautiful.”
“Shut up!” Nancy flushes, ducking her head.
“I’m serious, Nance,” Stevie slides a finger under her chin, tipping her face up to look at her again. “You’re, like…the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.”
And then they’re kissing again, falling backwards into Stevie’s bed.
When she tugs off her own shirt, Nancy’s eyes darken. Stevie’s seen that look plenty of times before. But, this time, it’s not some random guy watching, his face hungry. It’s Nancy staring back at her, want writ across her face.
A shiver runs through her as she kisses Nancy again.
“I’ve–I’ve never done this before,” Nancy admits shyly between brushes of their lips, blinking up at Stevie with big, blue eyes.
“With a girl?” Stevie asks. “I–me, neither.”
Sure, she’s made out with Carol plenty of times, but they’ve never even come close to anything like this.
“No. No, with…anybody.”
Stevie has never really gotten it before, guys and their virgin kinks. But now…she thinks she kind of does.
Because when she thinks about it, the fact that she’s going to be Nancy Wheeler’s first, something primal and possessive purrs with satisfaction in her chest.
“It’s okay, baby,” Stevie murmurs, softly, coaxingly, as she reaches out and intertwines her fingers with Nancy’s own, “I’ve got you.”
Nancy nods, squeezing her hand, and a thrill runs through Stevie.
She slips down Nancy’s body.
And then, neither of them says anything beyond whispered, sweet nothings for a long, long while.
Stevie sleeps more soundly that night than she can ever remember. When she gets up in the morning, she dresses with giddiness, eager to see Nance again. Some part of her is still reeling, as she remembers the night before–that she got to touch, and caress, and taste Nancy Wheeler as much as she wanted to.
Stevie isn’t exactly lacking in experience, but that was, without a doubt…the best sex she’s ever had. Taking care of someone else, like that–that’s something she’s never gotten to do before.
It had felt good, natural. It had felt right, in a way no hookup with a random guy ever has.
She’s practically floating on air by the time she finds Nancy standing by her locker.
“I feel like everybody’s staring at me,” Nancy confesses, “like they can just…tell.”
Stevie casts a worried look around, gnawing at her bottom lip. But, then…she remembers that, the post-first time jitters. Feeling like everyone can see it branded on you, that something’s different.
“No one knows,” she says, squeezing Nancy’s shoulder, trying to soothe. “I promise. I mean, Tommy and Carol totally don’t have a clue, and they were the only ones around last night. But…hey. I had a really nice time.”
“Me, too,” Nancy says, voice quiet and smile shy.
Stevie wishes she could kiss her, brush her lips over the soft, curled up corner of her mouth. But she settles for linking their pinkies together, warmth spreading through her when Nancy’s finger curls around her own. A subtle, private show of affection, just for them.
“I’ll see you at lunch?” she asks hopefully.
“Yeah,” Nancy nods, “see you then.”
Tapping a finger against the pretty little butterflies in Nancy’s locker, Stevie heads off, floating through all her morning classes until the time comes when she can see Nancy again.
Stevie and Nancy are heading out into the school parking lot, arms looped together, ready to meet up with Tommy and Carol before the big game. That is, until they catch them cornering Jonathan Byers at his car.
By the time Stevie gets a look at the pictures Tommy is waving around, she feels her blood run cold.
Photos of her house. Last night.
Last night, when she and Nance had…
When Carol gets to the photo of Nancy undressing, Stevie doesn’t even wait to see what incriminating evidence comes after that. She just sees red.
Rearing back, Stevie slaps Byers across the face with every bit of her strength. Then, she snatches the pictures from Carol’s hand and rips them in half.
“I wouldn’t,” Byers says urgently, catching Stevie’s eyes before turning to Nancy. “I didn’t.”
Stevie feels sick to her stomach.
She had lied to Nancy, that morning. Someone does know about them.
Jonathan Byers.
“Wouldn’t what?” Tommy demands, his laugh nasty. “Take creeper shots of a girl getting undressed without her knowing? Cuz it looks like you already did that, buddy.”
But he doesn’t say anything more, and when Stevie glances down at the torn photos now strewn across the ground, she doesn’t see any of herself, nothing after the point when Nancy had pulled off her shirt.
It’s cold comfort, given everything, but at least–everyone doesn’t know.
Unless Byers decides to tell them.
Tommy is the one who breaks the guy’s camera. Even though she didn’t do it herself, Stevie still feels a sick sense of satisfaction as she watches it smash against the pavement.
But then…Nancy bails before the game. Stevie tries not to sound too pitiful, when she calls after her. There’s a pit in her stomach, though, as she hopes, desperately, that Nancy will still want to be seen with her after this.
Barbara is missing, and Stevie totally fucks that up, what with her anxieties about her dad. She wasn’t kidding, he really would kill her when he found out–but it doesn’t matter.
And, honestly, in the moment, some tiny, petty part of her was…a little jealous, over Nancy’s desperation to find Barbara. As much as Stevie hates herself for it, when she admits it in the privacy of her own head afterwards, it’s still true.
So, despite the fact that both her parents insist she is far too immature for a girl of her age–she ponies up to do the grown up thing, heads over to apologize.
And even though Stevie means what she says when she drops by the Wheelers, that she really does hope it wasn’t for her, she has to admit–Nance looks really hot, swinging that bat around.
Stevie doesn’t tell Tommy and Carol where she’s going that night. They’d just make fun of her for it, and she knows that–but she really is worried about Nance. She’s clearly been on edge since Barbara disappeared.
So, Stevie takes matters into her own hands and shimmies up the side of the Wheelers’ house for a late night visit. She’s only done this once before, when Nancy was grounded, and Stevie wanted to see her anyway.
When she catches sight of Jonathan Byers through the window, in Nancy’s bedroom with his arm wrapped around her…it feels like her heart has been cleaved clean in two.
“Where were you last night? Let me guess–off with Ms. Goody-Two-Shoes, having a slumber party and braiding each other’s hair?” The sarcasm in Carol’s voice is bitter, vitriolic. Stevie would almost call it…jealous.
Not that she has any reason to be. Not now.
“No,” Stevie says flatly, “Nance was with Byers, last night.”
She realizes her mistake as soon as she’s said it.
“The princess and the creep?” Tommy demands.
The vicious, gleeful looks he and Carol exchange spell trouble.
The only reason they find themselves out defacing public property is because it’s Nancy, and because it’s Byers that she’s been with.
After all, it’s not like Carol is exactly a virgin, and Tommy would beat the shit out of anybody who said something like this about her.
But, the pair of them have had it out for Nancy from the word go. Have done nothing to make her feel welcome, the more and more she and Stevie started to hang out. They’ve kept their resentment barely thinned, even in Stevie’s presence.
Truthfully, Stevie isn’t sure if they were scared that Nancy was stealing her away, or just couldn’t stand being that close to someone who wasn’t as miserable as the two of them.
She glances up at the marquee of the Hawk. Slut screams there, blazing and ugly, Tommy’s handiwork.
Stevie has been on the receiving end of that word, more than once. She knows how much it can hurt.
But some ugly, nasty part of her wants Nancy to hurt, just as much as she does.
(And a saddened part of Stevie, buried much deeper, wonders just what that marquee might say, if her friends knew that Nancy had been in her bed just a few nights before.)
When Nancy and Byers find them, Nancy gives Stevie a ringing slap, hard enough to match the one she delivered to Byers a few days before. Carol looks ready to throw hands, but Stevie simply shakes her head, staring down her nose at Nancy. Haughty and imperious, like she isn’t worth it.
“You came by last night?” Nancy demands.
“Obviously,” Stevie drawls, the no duh evident in her tone.
“It wasn’t like that. Nothing happened!” Nancy insists, shooting her an imploring look.
Stevie sneers. “Why should I care? Who you fuck is your business, Wheeler.”
Nancy’s eyes flash dangerously.
“Apparently, you think it’s the whole town’s business.” she shakes her head, lower lip trembling, like she’s fighting back tears. “I thought you were better than this! But…I guess I was wrong.”
The disappointment in her voice strikes Stevie down to her core, shame flooding through her. But she crosses her arms over her chest, sniffing disinterestedly. She can’t let it show, the pain roiling through her.
Not in front of Nancy. Not in front of Carol and Tommy and Nicole.
Nancy and Byers turn to leave, then. But Tommy isn’t content to let them have the last word. And since he can’t go after Nancy, the way Stevie suspects he really wants to, he settles for the next best thing.
When Tommy spits that word, queer, like it’s something dirty and diseased, Stevie can’t help but flinch, hoping everyone’s too distracted to catch her.
“Screw-up,” Stevie mumbles flatly, partially to draw Tommy away from that line of insults, and partially because she wants to cut Byers to the quick, too. “Just like his family.”
That’s what does it, though. Tommy picks up right where she left off, like always, needling about Byers’ brother, his mother, what an embarrassment the whole family is to the entire town. Finally, the guy fully loses it.
Carol and Stevie jump in on one side, and Nancy on the other. But, despite their best efforts, they aren’t able to pull the two boys apart. It takes the police showing up to finally break it up.
As soon as she starts running, asphalt pounding beneath her sneakers and Tommy bloody at her side, the weight of everything hits Stevie all at once, with the force of a truck.
It’s barely just happened, but already, she knows. Stevie can see it, so clearly now…just how badly she fucked up.
When she turns up at the Byers house for her first round of apologies–it’s sure as hell not like Tommy is going to do it–Stevie finds Nancy already there, with a gun.
Then…a fucking monster bursts through the ceiling.
And while Nancy might look great with a bat, after years spent on the girls softball team, Stevie thinks it’s a damn good thing that she knows just how to use one.
“I’m sorry,” she finally gets to say it, as she drives the three of them to the hospital. “I was…a total jackass.”
“Yeah, you were,” Nancy agrees, never one to pull punches.
But then she lets her fingers bump up against Stevie’s, gives her hand a brief squeeze. And, even though it’s only for a second, for the first time in days something settles in Stevie’s chest.
It feels a lot like hope.
Stevie gets an invite over to the Wheelers’ house for their Christmas Eve party. After saying a quick hello to Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler, Nancy grabs her wrist and leads her upstairs to her bedroom.
“I’ve got something for you.” Leaning over from where she’s perched on her bed, Nancy slides a long, slim box out of her side table. “Consider it my ‘sorry for almost shooting you’ apology gift.”
The necklace inside is nearly an identical match for Nancy’s own delicate gold chain. But, instead of ballet slippers, the charm that hangs from it is…a pair of pom-poms.
“It’s…silly, I know,” Nancy crinkles her nose, the way she always does when she’s being apologetic, uncertain of herself. “I just thought, you could wear it, and then we would...”
“Match,” Stevie breathes out, not quite able to keep the awe out of her voice.
“Right. Yeah, exactly.”
Nancy unclasps the chain, holding it up in offering. Settling down beside her and pulling her hair up, Stevie turns to let Nancy put it on her. The metal is cold against her skin, but Nancy’s fingers feel warm where they brush over the nape of her neck.
“There,” Nancy reaches forward, turning the pendant so it’s facing forward. Even that lightest touch to her chest is enough to send Stevie’s heart racing. “Perfect. This way you can keep it close to your heart. I hope…that’s not too cheesy?”
“Nance,” Stevie strokes a careful finger over the pom-poms. “I love it.”
“Really?”
Stevie has no idea how she can sound so unsure. Not when she feels like there’s a neon, blinking sign over her head at all times, with cursive writing that reads Crazy about Nancy Wheeler.
“Yeah, of course I do. How could I not?”
Stevie reaches up tentatively, strokes a hand over Nancy’s cheek. Her heart swells when Nancy leans into the touch.
“Baby…can I kiss you, now?”
Biting her bottom lip, a familiar little grin curls across Nancy’s lips. “You better.”
So…Stevie does.
And in that moment, she doesn’t care what monsters or other horrors Hawkins has to throw her way. As long as she has Nancy–her girlfriend, she thinks giddily–at her side, she has a feeling things will all work out just fine.

i'm gonna posts snippets of all my fics lol
“Hey, Rob?"
Rob again.
Robin felt sparks in her heart as it fastened.
“Yeah?”
“Do you wanna have movie night today? Horror,” Nancy looked down at her hands for a few seconds.
Movie night? On a weekday?
“Yes!” Robin responded, sounding a little too excited, “I mean–yeah, totally,” she chuckled.
“Your pick,” Nancy smiled and she winked . She fucking winked.
Though it probably meant nothing. I mean, it’s normal for girls to wink at their girl friends.
“See you later,” Robin waved her hand and turned around to walk back to the store.
“Rob!” Nancy called again.
When Robin turned around, she saw Nancy walking towards her with m some speed. And before she could even respond yeah? as she always did, their lips were connected.
Nancy’s eyes were closed, her eyelashes flattering gently. But Robin’s were wide open, a vivid red flushing her cheeks. Their noses brushed, feeling her soft skin against her own bloomed flowers in her heart and butterflies took over her insides. Her pink lips stayed on hers like magnets, and Robin realised her lipstick would leave a barely noticeable mark, but a mark nonetheless.

What do you have against Ronance? It's clear Robin was attracted to Nancy as well as Vickie. Not only that, she jumped off a boat into monster-water for her, for goodness' sake. It's a bad-faith argument to say that people don't ship Vickie with Robin because she's a bisexual sapphic woman. Greatwise/Will and Gareth is not comparable in the slightest as that is a crack ship that never interacted. We DID have scenes with Robin and Vickie, though few.
And I'm gonna be So For Real, more people would ship Rovickie if Ronance was not there. People would devour those crumbs. But why choose crumbs, when you have a potential meal we spent a whole season with?
Okay, so this is really long, I'm sorry this took way too much time. I know I went a bit overboard. If there are any errors, please ignore lmao. Thank you for sending me an ask for a discussion. I also want to preface that I don't hate Nancy as a character, I don't like how she is written in certain situations and that the show overlooks mistakes she makes, and by pointing out those mistakes on her behalf is not me hating on her. Overall, I think she deserves better than what she is given both in the show and fandom.
First things first, Robin didn't jump into the water for Nancy. It was a delayed response after seeing her best friend being dragged under water. She's not as brave as Nancy. If we would apply the same logic, then Eddie would have jumped for Robin because he's in love with her. So no Robin jumped for Steve and should have been the first to do so, but because that scene was used for Stancy later (Eddie giving the speech to Steve in the woods) it had to be Nancy in that instance. It's really bothering me that this scene is so misread because people just don't get Robin's character. Who would you jump for, your best friend you know better than yourself or the girl you met a day ago?
The whole premise of Ronance (platonic or romantic) in s4 was so ooc for Robin, s3 Robin would have never acted the way like s4 Robin did. And I think that has something to do with what I said in the other post. We don't have enough time. There is no conflict when different groups of people come together because the show needs everyone to get along to save the world, and they couldn't elaborate on complex feelings a person might have towards others. So the show made Robin throw herself at Nancy's feet, despite thinking not too highly about her a season prior. Same with Steddie, the OG script was about how Steve and Eddie didn't get along first but it was cut out because there is no time to proper develop new relationships, even tho it would be more interesting. But again, that would mean the show would have to give us more episodes, which is unfortunately not the case.
So you see, I just don't think Robin would have acted the way she did around Nancy based on the character traits she displayed in s3. Furthermore, I will bring up Steve, which is a sensitive topic when it comes to Ronance. I don't want to come off as someone who in general makes a lesbian/sapphic relationship about a man's feelings, however because Steve has history with both girls I can't ignore him because Robin wouldn't either.
A little bit of background of Robin prior to meeting Nancy:
In s3, Robin couldn't stand Steve, and later, we found out why. It had mostly to do with her crush, Tammy Thompson, who had only eyes for him. Yeah, he was obnoxious, and Robin couldn't stand his smugness and arrogance, but the main reason was Tammy and her being kinda jealous of Steve in general because he had no problems fitting in. So she held on to this grudge against Steve for maybe even years. That tells us she doesn't forget when someone has wronged her and maybe, to an extent, her friends. Like she seems to be a person who has your back, no matter what.
Idk if you consider Rebel Robin as canon (I mean Maya narrated the podcast soo I mostly view it that way) but before Barb was Nancy's bff, she was close with Robin and later ditched her for Nancy. That in itself would leave a bad taste in Robin's mouth, and I guess she wouldn't be Nancy's biggest fan. Maybe that's why the priss comment in s3. Again, she had no problem disliking Steve because her crush liked him, but then she does an 180 with Nancy despite Barb being her actual friend leaving her for Nancy. Losing a friend to another person is much worse than a crush you never talked to, not liking you back or liking someone else.
But even if you ignore the Barb stuff and don't think it's canon, Robin still wouldn't be Nancy's biggest fan in the beginning and that has something to do with how Stancy ended and Jancy begun. You have to keep in mind Steve is Robin's bff, one if not the most important person in her life. He's everything to her she trusts him completely. He was maybe even the first person to know she was gay. Then why on earth would Robin A try to befriend Nancy, who broke his heart, and B trying to push her without a thought to get together with him again. It doesn't make any sense to me, based on how Robin was introduced.
Steve may have not any hard feelings for Nancy, maybe he only said positive things about her to Robin because he still views himself as the only person who fucked up in that relationship and not that Nancy was already in love with Jonathan for a while before things ended. Idk where you stand on the whole cheating thing, but it doesn't matter because rumors outside of the relationship would spread. Steve, the most popular guy in school, who is well liked, got left by his girlfriend of 1 year for the school freak, not even 2 days after a public fight. Like people would go crazy and Robin would have heard those rumors as well. You have to admit getting together with a new guy, not even after 48h is, I don't want to say weird, but not very cool, okay? Plus, Tommy would spread extra nasty shit because he hates Nancy and Jonathan and wants to hurt Steve as well. Robin would view her through those rumors, plus Steve having a hard time letting go, being heartbroken about it, there is no doubt in my mind that she wouldn't side eye Nancy.
Those two reasons, Barb and how Stancy ended, are the main ones as to why I think Robin was ooc for desperately wanting to befriend Nancy.
So the way I would have built up Ronance would be Robin being aloof towards her, and Nancy would have been the one who wanted to befriend her in the first place. Nancy never has to work for her relationships with others. People usually make the first move with her, so she never has to give much thought to it. Like Steve still loves her, Jonathan was ready to follow her wherever even if it endangered his family, and Fred followed her around like a lost puppy as well. And with Robin, it could have gone differently. Nancy should have made it her mission to make it up to Robin. Like she desperately wants a friend, she doesn't understand why Robin is being cold to her. By making her the instigator, Nancy would have to reflect on her mistakes and how she treated people, which would finally give her some personal character growth. Plus, it would have made the introduction to Stancy (romantic or platonic) way smoother and more balanced because Nancy never reflected on it. Steve's just available she doesn't have to make it up to him as well. Nancy never really addresses her faults in relationships, and the narrative in Stranger Things lets her off the hook every time. Letting Steve believe he was a terrible boyfriend despite liking Jonathan instead of him? No problem, no consequences. Steve still likes her. In s3 the show was again on her side when she fought with Jonathan by giving her the Karen pep talk, yes she apologized to him but she didn't understand his struggles really because she gave him the don't ever doubt me comment which kinda destroyed her apology imo. Furthermore, as soon as there was a rough patch in s4 with Jonathan, she expected him to come to her instead of going to him and fixing it because she has the financial means to do so, which indicates she still doesn't fully understand Jonathan's financial problems. Also, in general, Jonathan is terrified to tell her the truth, so he gets high to cope. It doesn't seem that he thinks Nancy is understanding.
Again, Robin could have been the person that would have made her realize wait, the way I take people for granted, and sometimes treat is wrong. Instead, we got yet another person instantly liking her and going along with everything she does, so Nancy never had to do anything for it, despite the obvious conflicts that should have arisen when they first met. But like I said before, the show doesn't have much time and focuses more on the plot, so there is no real development for characters, and everyone has to get along. I also think Stranger Things wanted a strong girl duo like Elmax, so they just threw Ronance together without conflict because they wanted to avoid drama, which would take up too much screentime. I can't emphasize the fact that Stranger Things suffers so much because it has too much plot and not enough time. Plus, I believe making Robin angry at Nancy on Steve's behalf would mean acknowledging that Stancy ended in a bad way or that Jancy maybe didn't have this cute start as a romance, but that would also mean recognizing Steve might have not been the only one who was wrong which is simply not possible. When s2 aired and people pointed out hey did Nancy cheat on Steve, did they really break up because a lot of people didn't view the fight in the ally as a break, especially because Nancy mentions she likes Steve at Murray's and Steve went to her house, the Duffers had to confirm it via interviews because I doubt they thought people would sympathize with Steve. Hence, why the narrative only blames him because they wanted the audience root for Jancy.
Long story short, I would have switched roles for platonic Ronance in the show. When it comes to romantic Ronance, that's mostly on the fandom. Everyone is allowed to ship whatever, I personally just don't think they are a good match. I don't see Nancy being patient enough with Robin's neurodivergent ways. She wouldn't handle her rambling over time very well. Nancy gets quickly irrated and snaps. Like Robin already felt the need to explain herself to her, making sure everything is okay because Nancy made her feel like her personality is too much and has faults, like her mom constantly tells her. Whereas with Vickie, she felt immediately at ease when they talked. More of that later. Robin is also poor, maybe a bit better off than Jonathan, but still, Nancy already doesn't get Jonathan's problems. Another reason is that because Steve is Robin's bff, Robin wouldn't want to date her all together. Like she sees Steve still likes her, she knows how much Nancy hurt him to a point that he is serial dating because he has like trust issues, that would immediately turn her off. Robin values Steve's friendship way too much than try to jeopardize it in any way. It's not like Steve wouldn't allow her to date Nancy, I think he would do everything to make Robin happy even if it costs his own happiness. Robin knows Steve. She would know that he would be hurt, and that's ultimately the factor that turns her off. Maya already confirmed that Robin values platonic relationships so much, so yeah. Just think about it that way. How would Robin feel if Steve suddenly would show interest in Vickie and starts dating her? That would be kinda fucked, same goes for Ronance, Robin knows Steve still likes her. I'm also a believer that you shouldn't necessarily date your bffs ex, it's just too messy especially if that relationship ended rather badly.
@findafight had this amazing post about one-sided Ronance, where they described exactly what I'm trying to convey. Nancy is the one interested, but ultimately, Robin declines because of her relationship to Steve. They also have several other posts about Ronance if you want to check it out. Another blog that discusses Ronance and has similar opinions is @thestobingirlie
What I dislike the most is that in Ronance, mostly Robin is only an ounce of her typical character. Her relationship with Steve is downplayed. She makes fun of him with Nancy, she lies to him about her relationship, even asks for sex advice in some fics which is just very weird and so ooc for her to do. Same goes for Steddie, as soon as either Steve or Robin go into a relationship both characters are so ooc, you almost don't recognize them, plus they only have time for their partners and their friendship gets sidelined, which again doesn't make sense for their characters. Ronance is also mostly beneficial to Nancy as it's viewed more how Robin can save her so she doesn't have to end up with a man. Hence, all the posts about how Robin is the only person who gets her, which is also such a shitty thing to say because both Jonathan and Steve were trying. Like Nancy's character development hinges more on her relationship with Robin than doing some soul-searching. Because for real, all her relationships so far are kinda meh because she doesn't know how to communicate properly with her partners, Robin wouldn't magically make everything better because she's a girl. Nancy needs to be single first and discover who she is without jumping in a new relationship. She needs therapy and has to work on her people skills to be a better partner for future relationships.
Also, so many people want Nancy to have a friend, and when Robin comes along, they immediately make it romantic. Robin can still be there for Nancy and understand her as a friend. I don't think she was romantically interested in Nancy in the show. She was actively pushing for Stancy. She only ever talked about being into Vickie romantically. Robin should be allowed to make a friend who is a girl without making it into a romance just because she is a lesbian. Lesbians can have platonic girl friends, lol. Fact is that so many see Robin interacting with a girl as romantic because she is looking at her and then ignore her real crush she talks about all the time.
Now to Rovickie and Vickie. What I meant with people not giving Vickie a chance because she's a girl and interested in a sapphic relationship is a common occurrence throughout fandoms in general. Guys are usually preferred when talking about characters or shipping. Girls have it so much harder. Like with Gareth, I don't think my comparison of him and Vickie was nonsensical or dumb. The fandom had no problems coming up with interesting headcanons for him, even outside the crackship. Almost all the hellfire boys, but especially Gareth because he's the most objectively attractive one of the group, got more love from the fandom. Vickie, on the other hand, is mostly used as the villain in Ronance fics, who is in the way of the main ship. People in general call her boring or too similar to Robin, which is insane because we have one scene where she rambles because she is talking to her potential crush. Also, being similar doesn't have to mean it's bad. Like I mentioned earlier, Vickie rambling is showing Robin it's okay to do so, which makes her feel immediately relaxed because she doesn't have to explain herself to Vickie. Not to mention the biphobia that runs through fandoms. The fact that Vickie had a boyfriend, who she broke up with, was enough. People usually headcanon Nancy as a lesbian than making her bi. Steve's only a bi icon when he's shipped with guys, like him dating a girl is seen as less valued or popular. Again, everyone can headcanon characters sexuality how they like, you do you it's just apparent that characters who are seen as bi are only celebrated for dating a person of the same sex.
Lastly, think about it if Vickie was a guy who was the love interest for Steve, there would be non-stop content for her. She would be well loved within the fandom. But Vickie is a girl, and if she were used as the love interest for Steve instead of Robin, she would also face the same scrutiny the already faces now. She's the villain in the way of ships because she's only a side character and not the full meal like you described. A male characters even with almost no screentime, will always get better treatment than female characters.

I think that the complaints about Vickie are less "she is too similar to Robin" (bc girl literally had half a scene of screentime. we have no idea who she is.) and more "once again there are only two (2) explicitly queers in the show (I will always be a Will should've come out to Jonathan truther) so of course they will be forced together".
She was only barely introduced. It feels a lot like the only reason she exists is so Robin can be with someone. The Duffers already have problems dealing with their current (pretty big) cast, it does not bode well for Vickie's characterisation tbh (I'm sorry, I love him as much as the next person. But Argyle's one (1) personality trait is literally. Weed. So it doesn't seem improbable that Vickie's one (1) personality trait would be becoming Robin's girlfriend. Which would suck for obvious reasons. Also, like. They are already infamous for their treatment of queer(-coded) characters)
It would also take away from stobin time, which is an already established dynamic everyone (if you don't you are simply factually incorrect sorry not sorry) loves. The cast is huge, the Duffers will have to pick and choose who they want to focus on, and it seems way more probable that those will be the established mcs (Will & El especially) and not Robin's side-character love interest. I mean, it would honestly be bad storytelling if they did that in the last season.
Especially since the straight romances are so good. Lumax? Absolute banger. The early Stancy development? So good. Jancy? Pretty sure there's a poll out there about how they are one of the most well-liked couples. Mileven? Multiple seasons establishing groundwork before they even get together. To have Vickie not even be a character before she is thrown into a relationship with the only lesbian feels a bit like a slap in the face. Like, at least Steve had a bunch of character development after the breakup but that can't happen with Vickie because it's the last season and they really have other stuff to worry about 😪 Like, idk, at least everyone else had a choice, which is part of what makes those romances so impactful (lumax, jancy, etc etc), while Robin - on the count of being a lesbian and Vickie being the only other sapphic character - really.....doesn't.
(Plus maybe it's the aro in me speaking, but I found it kinda cool to have a canonically queer character whose story arc is not completely focused on romance for once)
I also think this part of the reason why ronance got so big. Nancy already *is* her own person. Nobody can look at Nancy and say "her only personality is being queer" or "she's only here so Robin doesn't end up alone because we obviously need to pair everyone off somehow". A relationship between them would be another facette of their development, not the one thing that defines them. (Like. Her being bi is literally the only reason Vickie is even in the season. Sorry not sorry.)
But I mean. The season isn't out. We barely saw the two interact. My expectations are already below ground level. Maybe they will surprise me.

Sapphic Stancy where they part ways after Nancy goes off to college, and they reunite years later. Nancy discovers that Steve Harrington is now Stephanie Buckley, sister to Robin. It doesn't take much for Nancy to adjust. Who wants to write this?

Here’s another little fic rec, or rather, series rec as it’s two connected fics.
Written in 2017, so only S1-2 characters included.
A really interesting look at how things might have been different with a female Stevie.

Alright here’s the last round of the ship polls
Here are the descriptions for the ships since I know poly ships aren’t very known:
Elumax: Lucas, El, and Max. Most people that ship this are fans of both lumax and elmax so they combined them together. Wether or not Lucas and El are dating depends on the shipper, but Max is always dating El and Lucas.
The sapphic senate: like the name suggests, this is a big sapphic polycule. It normally contains Robin, Nancy, Chrissy, and Vickie— but sometimes Barb and other female characters will be added to the mix. I’m pretty sure it was created as a combination of ronance, rockie, and buckingham, but many people that ship it make them all date each other.
The partycule: basically everyone in the party dating each other. Well not everyone, but it’s sort of a “this is my boyfriend Will, and his boyfriend Mike, and Mike’s girlfriend El-“ type of thing.
Teens: basically all of the older teens dating each other. I’ve only seen this ship like once but I’m sure there’s a decent amount of people who like it. It’s a combination of steddie, ronance, stancy, jancy, etc.
Stoncy: Jonathon, Nancy, and Steve. Why have a love triangle when you can just be poly right? A mix of jancy, stancy, and stonathon. There might be times where stonathon gets taken out, idk I haven’t seen a lot of this ship.
Willelmike: this one’s pretty self explanatory. I haven’t personally seen anyone ship this but I know that it exists. It’s for people that like both mileven and byler. Will and El aren’t dating though, or at least I hope they aren’t.
Bywheelclair: Will, Mike, and Lucas. Byler + byclair + wheelclair, basically.
