#sans with a human soul

Alright, I’ll be honest. I’ve been searching ao3 for an Undertale fic where the main character is a human and falls to the underground, yadda yadda, but once they make it out of the ruins (because really, who dies in the ruins??), they die. However, instead of resetting (if they even can, as their soul may not be very DETERMINED), they just decide willingly(? I mean they were murdered, but they agreed post-mortem, probably because dying hurts like a buttcheek on a stick) to be used to help break the barrier. However, to make it more interesting, they absorb themself(?? I cannot think of a better way to word this) into the monster who killed them, or a monster they just like good enough, and refuse to be absorbed by Asgore.

And actually yeah I’m staking my claim on this idea, I’m just putting it out there because I wish it to be so

My brain kinda took it in the direction of ‘the human is terrified, but also a Sneaky Snitch and makes their way through the entirety of the ruins without running into a single monster (excluding maybe Flowey, but they’d definitely run away from him), and run through all the way to the pre-Snowdin area (does that area have a name? It’s not Snowdin, but it’s snowy). However, we are going on the assumption here that in the game or original timeline or whatever, Toriel asked Sans to make the promise to her after Frisk met her and stayed a while. This is important because after the stick on the ground breaks, the mc snaps around, and then they fucking die. Since they rushed through the ruins and dodged meeting Mom.

So now that they’re dead, soul light blue, displaying their Patience (which was already shown, since it took for-fucking-ever to solve the puzzles in the ruins without help, while also avoid encountering any monsters safely). They freak out for a while, and when they regain composure, Sans is looking at them weird, talking to them about how ‘I knew that human souls stuck around after death, but I didn’t realize they kept their consciousness,’ and explaining what would happen to them to calm them down, making at least three puns during his whole spiel.

So the human, deciding ‘fuck it, I’m already dead and this guy’s fuckin hilarious,’ absorbed themself (still cannot think of any way to word this better) into Sans, granting him a fuckton more power and dodge time, because patience doesn’t mean you can take hits. Sans, very confused and vaguely distressed, does not know what to do, and just takes a shortcut to Undyne.

And then it continues escalating from there, probably

I think it’d be kinda funny if whenever a soul talks to or influences color, it takes the format of something like “you.”

Something like this:

* You want to wear the rainbow shoes today.

“No, I don’t,” Color muttered. “We’re going there to work, not to play.”

* You pout.

And if Color comprises by wearing something else, or puts the shoes in a bag to wear later after wherever they’re going or where he thinks it’d be more appropriate, the text says something like

* !

* Wearing rainbow shoes fill you with Kindness.

* :)

And then Color gets hit with an overwhelming wave of excitement and gratitude and love from somewhere within that he’s momentarily dazed (maybe he sees a blurry flash image in his mind of a little girl jumping up and down in excitement before it fades away) and has to work to stay grounded in reality for most of the day up until they finally put on their rainbow shoes

Nightmare would absolutely be the kind of guy to go: "I don't know what Color told you, but-" any time Killer expresses a negative opinion about him. Both because he's incapable of seeing Killer as his own person capable of forming his own opinions and because, while he knows he's a bad guy, I would be willing to bet that there's some level of denial for him on that front. (Corrupted Nightmare gives me major victim complex vibes, I dunno what to say).

And every time Killer starts doubting himself because he struggles to see himself as his own person too even on good days. But then he remembers that that bastard abused him for years (likely to think about it more as 'had undeserved control over him and now won't leave him alone after he won the game'), so actually fuck that! He's allowed to dislike him, Color or not.

Nightmare would also try to pull the "I don't know what those souls told you, but-" at the start of meeting Color and it goes back again to him knowing he's a bad guy but also not fully. And also it goes back to him being a manipulative bastard, but I don't think it needs to be said.

And it probably works too to some extent because that is something Color struggles with. Thankfully, he's got Integrity there to help him keep his head straight, and Justice there to call that slimy octopus out on his bullshit.

Color has a fear of the dark.

It’s not just a childish fear they grew up with.

The darkness feels so empty. They can’t see anything, there could be something there, nothing there. Even if it’s a familiar room, it’s still scary for them to be in there.

They can’t see other people, and that scares them the most. They are aware it sounds unreasonable to some, but they feel like if they can’t see the other person, then they left them.

But to Color’s surprise, Killer likes the darkness. Killer likes how it feels. And Color doesn’t know how to tell Killer about their fear.

So, every night, Color buries it deep down and hides their fear as Killer turns off the light. Color knows that Killer would understand if Color told him, but something held Color back.

Was it desperation to be the perfect person so nobody will hate them and leave them behind?

What if Killer hated Color for taking away his darkness during the night and distanced himself away from Color?

Color didn’t try to think about it much, and just fights through their fear of darkness every night because they are scared of telling anyone about their fear.

Killer hadn’t found out. If they found out through other ways that Color had a fear of the darkness, he would feel horrible for sleeping with the lights off every night.

I feel like it's often unclear but like Toucan is made up of eight SOULs and nine people. There's the usual six: perseverance, integrity, patience, kindness, justice and bravery in each of the wings. And there are technically two determination souls? which are Frisk (kept in the ribcage) and Chara. I'm counting Chara as a 'soul' because they appear and can speak like the other ghosts though their actual SOUL isn't present physically. And then there's Sans's soul which is just below his ribcage.
