Character Name Ideas
I know people sometimes struggle to come up with character names, so here are some tips for coming up with them!
Year they were born:
If your story is set in the real world, then you could give them a name from the year they were born (Roughly). So for example, if your story is set in the modern day, and your character is 23 years old, give them a name that was popular in 2002. Similarly, if your story is set in the 1800s, used names popular in that time period! Lots of different websites can give you popular baby names based on year and region.
Region/Country they are from:
Speaking of region, that could also be an excellent way to gain character names inspiration! If your character is from Japan for example, look up Japanese names! From Ancient Rome? Give them Roman names! Are there parents a mix raced couple? Give them a first name from one region, and a middle or surname from there other parents region! This technique can be paired well with the previous technique too!
Use name with meaning:
This is probably very common advice, but I decided to mention it regardless. All names from any language and culture have meanings, so use that! If your character has connection to water or the ocean, look for names with meanings connected to water. Is your character very brave or noble? Use names that mean bold or courageous. This could even help hint at story elements like character arcs and foreshadowing. Is your character the twist villain of your story? Give them a name that means villainous or cunning. You can really have fun with this!
Mix words from other words:
This one is a little weird, but it can sometimes work really well. Especially if you’re writing in a fantasy or sci-fi setting and want your characters to have unique sounding names. What you do is take two or three words (can be from whatever language) and take elements of those words and squish them together to make a name. The words can have similar meanings that represent that character, or could be from a specific culture that the character is inspired by. An example of this could be taking the words Darkness, Redemption & Sanque (Italian word for blood), and make the name Demarksan. Coming from Ark from Darkness, Dem from Redemption & San from Sanque.
Have naming themes:
Naming themes can be a good way to name multiple characters and have them all feel consistent, especially if the naming theme go to specific families. For example, in one of my WIP’s, all the royals are named after flowers. Names like Rose and Lily. It sounds simple, but it can help name a a big bulk of characters if you have a huge cast.
Uses your name and origin as inspiration:
If you’re unsure where to start with things to use as inspiration, use yourself! If you are of a specific nationality, give your characters name from your culture. If your name has a meaning you like, use that meaning! This can be especially good when you first start making your characters, and when they’re in the early stages of development. You can even mix different elements of yourself to make something truly unique! A good example of this would be my DnD character, Bladsen. His name comes from the word Blad, meaning leaf in Danish (Since I’m partially Danish). And sen, a part of my surname.
Final notes:
These are just a couple of techniques I personally use when naming characters, so feel free to use them as well if you find them helpful! And remember to have fun when naming characters. If you don’t like naming characters, then you don’t have to have an in-depth reason to name a character something. It can be purely vibes, and that’s totally fine!

13.01.2024 & 14.01.2024 // winter quarter
yesterday was a long day—i have a monday/wednesday class schedule, and i'm busy from 10:30am to 5:30pm. but the classes are very interesting, so it's worth it. yesterday in chinese lit we went over yuan zaju and earlier sanqu and their differences, and the second half of our class was covering the drama the injustice to dou e. it's interesting to see the ways zaju as a form of art differs from play formats i'm more used to—there are much stricter guidelines for how to structure them, for example.
this morning i had my weekly kazakh class, my only class that's not on a m/w schedule. we focused on the alphabet and taking dictation and then corrected any issues with it. we also talked about back/front vowel harmony, which i get just fine in spoken kazakh, but the cyrillic alphabet throws me for a loop because even though i can write it just fine, i always forget what sounds match up with which vowels :') but i'll get there! i've assigned myself the task of learning cursive as well, since our professor said that almost all written material will be cursive, not print, and the cyrillic cursive script has always befuddled me.

hey did you know that if you play boss music in a music box it changes the tone of the song completely?
Unrelated here's a cover of Tenebra Rosso Sanque that is totally normal :)
I loved that scene in Ultrakill where V1 and Sisiphus had a picnic in a nice field of flowers :)

Heh. Such a simple prompt word. But, it just so happens to be in one of the most powerful scenes of my book. So, here's a bit from Sanque Collina, where Adam has just found out that there are apparently things going on in this city that not even the most powerful Time Mage to have ever existed can see coming.
He just stared at her. This was completely surreal. But then, he shook his head. She was right about one thing. He needed to finish this — or start it. “I really am sorry.” And then he pulled her to him and bit. It had been a long time since he had drained someone dry. He had forgotten what it was like. He had forgotten about that moment, at the very end, when survival instinct overrode the effects of his venom. Not that it mattered. She would have been no match for him at her strongest. In those final moments before her death, she wouldn’t have had the strength to shoo off a fly. And then it was done. He got out of the car, then went around to the passenger side to pull her body out. He laid her in the ditch, and artfully arranged her limbs to make her look like she had been tossed there. And then he pulled out the second illusion stone and bit his wrist, dripping two drops of blood onto it before laying it on her body. Nobody would find her until after sunset the next night. As he got back into his car and drove away, he pulled his phone out and called Andros. “It’s done.” He didn’t bother to tell him the rest. What would even be the point? Esther had said they would have no more answers for him. And he was increasingly convinced that she knew more than they did about it. One line in particular kept running through his head, though. “You have no idea how big this really is.” Bigger than literally the fate of the world? Just what was going on, here?

[Chinese poetry tag] 《天净沙·秋思》 Autumn Thoughts by 马致远 Ma Zhiyuan (Yuan Dynasty)
Autumn is a well known motif in Chinese literature. Many Chinese literati in ancient times write about their melancholy feelings in late autumn, hence the season is often associated with a sombre, introspective mood. Today we’ll explore a famous 散曲 sanqu, a lyrical style type of poetry by renowned poet and playwright Ma Zhiyuan.
Original:
枯藤老树昏鸦,
小桥流水人家,
古道西风瘦马。
夕阳西下,
断肠人在天涯。
Translation:
Over old trees wreathed with withered vines fly evening crows;
Under a small bridge near a cottage a stream flows;
On an ancient road in the westerly wind a lean horse goes.
Westward declines the sun;
Faraway wanderer is the heartbroken one.
Analysis:
In 28 characters, Ma paints a bleak and desolate picture of a wanderer without a home to return to. Six keywords sets the scene like Matisse’s minimalist sketches: 枯,老,昏,古,西,瘦 - withered, old, dim, ancient, west and lean. West is a Chinese symbol often depicting parting, decline and enlightenment (as the sun sets westward). Here, westerly wind refers to the autumn wind, emphasising the melancholy mood.
The second line portrays an almost picturesque and peaceful scene, however overlaying the ancient road, westerly wind and lean horse of the third line suggests that the wanderer has walked endlessly, perhaps through the change of seasons, never settling and only turning back to observe the small joys of settlers and lamenting on his own lack of belonging.
The magic comes from the final sentence 断肠人在天涯 - the literal translation is “people with cut bowels wander at the ends of the earth”. The strong, explicit imagery describes the deep sorrow and pain of wanderers without a place they can call home.
Reflections
This poem came into my mind recently due to the #StopAsianHate campaign and general anti-Asian sentiment amidst the pandemic. It got me thinking about our identity and belonging. Many Asians who are born or brought up as immigrants are often told to go back to their own countries - however they may have never been to the country of their roots, may not speak the language of their parents and grandparents and may not even be familiar with the culture and traditions. Where is home for them? The experience of mixed race Asians is also unfortunate, with the constant mentality of ‘us against them’ and not feeling like they belong to either sides.
It got me thinking about Asians who escaped their home countries due to war, conflict and exile, having no choice but to live in a foreign land as an ethnic minority and bring up their children to fit into a system that never wanted to welcome them. And it honestly tugs at my heartstrings when I think of the helplessness and sadness our community had faced and continues to face. I feel like this poem, though 800 years old, is still very much relevant today.
