Excuse the format (I made this for instagram since that's what the publisher wants, rip) but this is basically a shorter, easy-to-read version of the history section at the back of my new book.
(Part 2 || The book)
---
Disclaimer: I'm extremely not an expert, and this is only scratching the very surface of complex topics that are hard to simplify. I mostly made this to EXTREMELY rec these books and podcasts, and would urge you to go check them out if you're not familiar!!
This stuff might seem obvious to some of you, but let me tell you, I do NOT think it's widely known in the general UK population.
Imo a lot of the general (especially white) public think that the Windrush generation - Caribbean migrants brought in to help rebuild postwar Britain in the 50s - were the first Black communities in the UK. And yet there's deliberately not much focus on why the Caribbean has links with northern europe. HMMMM
(Britain loves, for example, to celebrate the abolition of slavery without mentioning WHAT CAME BEFORE IT - Britain being the biggest trader of enslaved people, with more than 1 million people enslaved in the British Caribbean. They literally just did it overseas.)
Telling the truth about history or British imperialism gets this massive manufactured backlash at the moment. There are so many ideas prevalent in UK politics - anti-Black, anti-refugee, anti-trans - based on going ‘back’ to some imaginary version of the past. Those are enabled by a long tradition of carving parts out of the historical record, and being selective about whose histories get told and preserved. Even though the book I was making is a fun rom-com, by the time I finished researching, I decided to make an illustrated history section at the back too (this is a mini version). My hope is that readers who haven’t come across these histories might get an introduction to them - and some pointers of what they could read next to get a clearer view of our past.

“Crystal is the voice of reason” no tf she is not did we even watch the same show? She’s a mess, she’s 16, she’s angry and emotional and dealing with way too much at once.
Female characters are so often reduced to “the reasonable one” or “the one with the braincells” but Crystal clearly isn’t that, every character is dealing with their own shit and none of them are perfect, they’re teenagers who repeatedly fuck up.
Yeah, she tries to help Charles, but she’s no therapist. She pushes him and screams at him because she doesn’t know how to deal with any of this either. She isn’t any better at dealing with her emotions than he is and that’s the whole point.
She’s just as impulsive as him and just as angry. She constantly puts herself in danger in order to save the people she cares about, and would have absolutely reacted the same way Charles did with the night nurse if it had been her in that situation.
People love Charles for the same character traits they keep trying to strip away from Crystal, and this is a massive problem with female characters in fandom.

i feel like sometimes people in the twst fandom get so caught up in defending their faves (or hating on the ones they don't like) that they forget that the whole game hinges on (almost) everyone being a Charming Asshole TM

Here's the big sanitisation headcannon thing I was working on! If it looks like a PDF that's because it was, in fact, at some point, a PDF. Feel free to ask questions because I'm sure this raises a lot of them.

I love how Dune references Greek mythology in the name of its main characters.
When we initially meet the Atreides family, in both the original book and the new movies, they look like this very honourable, very stereotypical "good" fantasy family. We are seemingly meant to root for them like the Starks in A Song of Ice and Fire.
They visually appear much nicer and likeable than the Harkonnens whose entire aesthetic just screams evil. The Harkonnens are portrayed as violent and impulsive. They only wear black. They look inhuman. They are even shown to be cannibals.
However, the name Atreides is already a tip-off that they are just as fucked up as the Harkonnens. Because Atreides means House of Atreus, from whom the Atreides claim to be descendants.
This means they are the descendants of Tantalos, who served his own son to the gods.
Of his grandson Atreus, who was killed by his nephew born of an incestuous relationship.
Of Agamemnon, who sacrificed his own daughter Iphigenia to the gods to go fight in the Trojan war.
Of Clytemnestra, who killed her husband in revenge for her daughter's death.
And of Orestes, who in turn killed his mother to avenge his father.
So, despite their pretty faces and their nice clothes and luscious hair, the Atreides are ultimately the same as the Harkonnens (Leto and the Baron refer to each other as cousin, Jessica and Paul are literally direct descendants of the Baron).
So, even though on first impression the Atreides might look heroic, but with just a glance under the surface and you can already tell that they are as rotten to the core as the Harkonnens. They're just nicer to look at, and therefore, they dupe you into believing that they are the good guys.

When a person is sanitised, they are taken over and killed, and return as a part of Tartar's hivemind. 10,007 have been taken.
Agent 3 and Number 10,008 met for the first time as enemies. They meet again for a rematch at the end of 8's journey through the Metro, Agent 3 in the process of being sanitised, and puppeted by the Commander. Agent 3 is rescued before he can die and be fully sanitised, and 8 gets to see the sun. The first string begins to unravell.

Okay I know tumblr is treating EPIC as if it cleared their skin and watered their crops and I genuinely really really like it the music is excellent but I gotta say this:
I HATE the way it's presenting odysseus' arc and flaws with polyphemus. Like the problem wasn't that he was too NICE?? Where did that come from? The problem was that odysseus was a cocky lil shit and even though he had managed to get away with the nobody trick he went like "actually you got your ass beat by odysseus lol loser". Hybris-nemesis-catharsis is homer 101 and I'm SO annoyed that an entire generation of teenagers is getting this interpretation of the text. A hero giving in to being the "monster" and losing his kindness is a great arc but there are 700 other heroes you could have done that with - not odysseus.
On the other hand, how catchy is Ruthlessness, amirite?

"jason tried to kill mia because winnick was obsessed with him!!"
1. don't make me tap the "jason never tried to kill or even harm mia" sign again.
2. idk mate, why would WINICK, the guy who, yes, resurrected jason, but also the guy who loved to write arrows and bats as contrast, who wrote mia's most formative arcs, who tweaked mia's backstory in order to make them even better foils (which they always were to the point where she's living with a hiv diagnosis starlin tried to kill jason with originally. and this might be a coincidence because winick simply has some themes he likes to explore, but damn if it's not a neat coincidence)...
I mean, why would that guy want to culminate mia's arc (because this arc was ABOUT MIA, you fools) with a confrontation between these two foils he loves to write? why would he think the narrative demanded they had some one-on-one time? I guess we'll never know.
