AFL Top 100: The Umpires
Craig Bradley had a magnificent career of senior football. Starting at SANFL Club Port Adelaide in 1981, he moved to Carlton in 1986 and by the time his career was over in 2002 he had amassed a total of 501 games of senior football. This extraordinary achievement is unlikely to ever be achieved again, particularly when you realise that Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury is the only player…

Saint Departures 2023
After suffering a bitter loss against the GWS Giants in the 2nd elimination final of the 2023 season, Stkilda's season was officially over. This brings us to a bitter time of the year as external pressures mount on us to change our list, update our list and perform better in the upcoming 2024 season.
Stkilda will make the difficult decision to not offer 5 players contracts for the upcoming year.
Here is our list of delisted players after the 2023 AFL Premiership season:
Jack Bytel
youtube
Jack was selected with pick 41 in the 2018 AFL draft, and played 22 senior games. Jack spent 5 years on our list and suffered significant back issues that kept him sidelined and rehabbing for most of his career. We wish Jack the very best in these tough times and hope he continues with his football.
Leo Connoly
youtube
Leo was drafted 64th overall in the 2021 AFL draft and managed 7 games, and 1 goal with us. Leo made his debut in 2020 which was at the MCG against Richmond, in what was a covid-interrupted season. Leo was a vauled teamate at the club and we hope he still has a future in football as he is only 22 years of age.
Jack Peris
youtube
Jack was selected as a category B rookie through our Next Generation Academy. Peris debuted this season against Gold Coast and unfortunately that was the only game he played for us. Jack is only 19 and his future is very much still in front of him, and we wish him the very best.
Oscar Adams
Oscar, originally from Mount Gambier, was recruited by the Saints via SANFL club Glenelg with pick No.51 in last November's national draft. Oscar faced minor off field setbacks and was unable to debut in his tenure with us. We wish Oscar the best for his future and he has the full support of our club.
Tom Highmore
youtube
Tom was drafted at pick number #45 in the 2020 AFL draft. Tom played 16 games in his career as a key position defender/halfback. He averaged 22.6 disposals in his first six games but has fallen out of favour as of late and will not have his contract renewed for season 2024. We wish Tom the absolute best for his future.
Trade period list departures
Also departing us through the trade period are Nick Coffield, Jack Billings and Jade Gresham. We wish for a quick transitional period for our traded saints and hope they feel welcome and loved at their new homes. This trio will be especially missed as their valuable contributions to the club go above and beyond the playing field. This trio boasts a sum of 342 games experience that we have all enjoyed watching. Big thanks to Nick, Jack and Jade, we will miss you.
The trade period also see us lose picks 35, 56, a future second round pick, and a future fourth round pick.
In turn we recieve Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow, Freo young-gun Liam Henry, picks 21, 41, and two future third round picks.
Here is our list manager Stephen Silvagni talking about the trade period:
instagram
Once a saint always a saint, all past players are welcome at our club at anytime. We are committed to march on to premiership glory and we understand what it takes to get there. We will continually assess and manage our list, and recruit accordingly to what we need to win games.

Watching Jack Trengove play SANFL is something. Probably should be back in the actual port team
haha i don’t know much about him, but it seems like Port need all the help they can get. nice when older guys dominate the reserves!!!! they deserve to get games, it’s so unfair that coaches prefer the silly youth. this is why players are retiring at 27 :(

Roger Kerr on his daughter Samantha, the Matildas’ star striker and Young Australian of the Year
Sam was playing Aussie rules against boys and in under-10s or 11s kicked six goals in a game. At any level of footy you play, doing that you know you’ve got some ability.
Then she went to soccer for under 12s, because she was getting roughed up too much in Aussie rules, and played against boys and was kicking three or four goals a game and I was going, ‘There’s something special about this one’.
She played with the boys until she was 15, until she made the Australian side.
Sam was a very energetic type of girl. Always loved her sport from day one, was always kicking a footy around the house. She was always a nice natured person and she was a great little kid.
Sam reads the game really well, she is very good at anticipating what the next move is. Same with Daniel (Sam’s AFL premiership-winning brother), they’ve just got that ability to read the play. They see what is coming before it happens.
She is always one or two steps ahead of where the ball is going to be, with her running speed that makes her so dangerous. She is seeing it all happen before others and is already in position before the other players have noticed what will happen.
I wasn’t physical like Daniel, I relied on speed (Roger played in SANFL and WAFL premierships), so that’s what I had that I see in Sam.
Her work ethic sets her apart. I always told her it wasn’t about what you did when you touch the football it’s what you do when you’re not.
She will go for runs every day or a bike ride, trying to be fitter than the next person.
She played netball, too, and was one of the best on the team but when soccer came along she was a different person, she fell in love and never looked back. Loves the running, loves the competition.
We miss her when she is away. I was only just Facetiming with her, we do that all the time. She tells us what she is up to, how her latest game went and what she is looking forward to.
Sam is paying for the family tickets to come to the World Cup (2019 in France). She has a big heart and that’s how she plays and how people perceive her, she doesn’t forget where she comes from. She loves the family being around her and we are looking forward to having a bit of a holiday in June.

Week 4 - Public Relations in context
In week 4 the topic of discussion in class was Public Relations in context. This week's market analysis will look at an example of the different ways to communicate messages in both traditional and social/digital media. In August 2020 Adelaide crows star Taylor Walker was found guilty of racially abusing former Saint and current SANFL player Robbie Young and was banned for six AFL games which carried over until round four of the 2022 season.
However it was not known if he was going to immediately return after the ban. The Adelaide Crows used the social media platform of Instagram to announce Tex Walker’s return, as well as other platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
Whereas the news also broke to the public in other more traditional media forms such as The Age who had the following headline on Walker’s return.
In reflection both traditional and digital media forms are effective because it broadens your audience and helps relay messages to a wider demographic. This allows organisations to cater for all, however in this day in age social media is more effective as it is quicker and has a larger reach.

Taylor Walker’s Return - Adelaide Crows
The Adelaide Crows took to social media (twitter) to announce the return of ex-captain and star forward Taylor Walker. The publication was posted on Twitter after Taylor Walker had served a lengthy ban from racially vilifying North Adelaide’s Robbie Young in a SANFL game in 2020.
The situation has been questioned by the AFL media as Taylor formally apologised on TV to Robbie Young but was called ‘gutless’ and ‘cowardly’. I originally came across this publication when it was reviewed on Channel 9’s Footy Classified.
I don’t follow the Adelaide Crows social media channels but that was where most people viewed it.
The post copped a lot of backlash online, with many fans questioning the integrity of Adelaide celebrating the return of a player banned because of racism.
Adelaide’s Coach Matthew Nicks even referred to the post in a press conference saying they had made a mistake on this post.
I believe this is an unsuccessful attempt at PR, although it is newsworthy having a player of Walker’s ability returning, the tone and wording, even releasing it on social media, completely misread the room, and views of supporters.

His 1989 VFL Grand Final appearance, during which he kicked a grand final record nine goals for a losing side, is regarded as one of football's greatest individual performances, earning him the Norm Smith Medal.
At the beginning of the 1991 season, Ablett shocked the football world by abruptly announcing his retirement from the game but made a comeback midway through the year. He went on to appear in the 1992, 1994, and 1995 grand finals, before officially retiring after the 1996 season.
