Oksana Merhut, known as the Sand Fairy, creates moving pictures in sand. She is currently on tour to raise money for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Dating back to ancient times when Australian Aboriginals, the Navajo Indians and Tibetan monks used sand and crushed gemstones to create paintings, sand animation began gaining popularity in Ukraine in 2006. Oksana Merhut mastered the art form in 2014 and wrote a professional teaching program for it. She notes the therapeutic quality sand animation has, especially among the children she worked with that have been displaced from Russia's full-scale invasion.

Experimental Animation Workshop

The workshop this week in Experimental Animation with @ysweeneylsad we were introduced to a animation. The focus was on non-traditional hand-drawn animation but on exploring animation in other forms.

For my work, I took inspiration from William Kentridge's charcoal animation series,

The chalk animation 'Humorous Phases of Funny Faces' by James Stuart Blackton,

and Caroline Leaf's sand animations.

For practise during the workshop I made a small animation of a house collapsing based off my Disrupt project.

Finally finished my experimental animation test. its stop motion sand animation on a light board with handdrawn on tvpaint and a lot of editing.

Famed manga creator Akira Toriyama has passed away on March 1, 2024 at age 68 due to acute subdural hematoma.

Toriyama began his first serialized manga, Dr. Slump, in 1980, and it inspired two television anime and multiple films. Toriyama followed it up with Dragon Ball, which ran from 1984 to 1995, and is still inspiring manga and anime sequels and spinoffs today. The manga's Dragon Ball anime adaptation, its sequel Dragon Ball Z, and its other numerous sequels and anime films are equally as well-known as the manga, and its hero Goku has become a character known throughout the world.

Toriyama is also well-known as the character designer for the Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon and Tobal games.

Most recently, Toriyama was working closely with the production for the Dragon Ball Daima anime series, the most recent anime series based on Dragon Ball, and is credited for the new anime's story and character designs.
