National Onion Ring Day
Crisp, fried, a bit sweet—onion rings are the fancy cousin of the French fry. Have a taste-test with various dipping sauces, or get samples from different places.
They’re rich and crisp and delicious, surprisingly sweet for a flavor so often related to being spicy and the source of tears. But something about the process of breading them in a flavorful coating and deep-frying them in a vat of oil brings out the delicious flavors hidden inside. They come in towers and flowers, giant-sized and tiny, and they’re a favorite at burger joints all over the world. That’s right, we’re talking about the onion rings, and National Onion Ring Day celebrates this delicious treat and its long history.
History of National Onion Ring Day
The origin of the onion rings is actually somewhat mysterious, but we do know that in 1802 a recipe was published in ”The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined.” This recipe describes a process of dipping ½” onion rings dipped into a rather flavorful mixture of flour with creams and cheeses and then boiling them in a vat of lard. Following on the heels of this was a suggestion to serve it with a sauce made of a mixture of mustard and butter.
Since then, there have been many refinements of the onion rings recipe, with a great debate existing on the proper method and what brings out the best flavor. There are hundreds of recipes involving different mixtures of batter to coat them in, different sauces to dip them in, and even the type of onions you use to prepare them.
As if that wasn’t complicated enough, there’s even a variety of onion rings that are made from an onion paste formed into a circle instead of an actual slice of onion. If you’ve ever enjoyed these delicious treats, then National Onion Ring Day provides you with an excuse to go to your favorite source and consume onion rings until you burst.
Onion rings aren’t just an invention of the western world. There’s also evidence that people experimented with the idea of covering strips of onion with batter and deep-frying them in developing countries too. In India, for instance, merchants would often sell fried, battered onion strips as street food – a quick snack that people could munch on the go.
As we discussed, historians have found examples of onion ring-like recipes that date back as far as 1802. With that said, there are restaurants in operation today that claim to be the originators of the idea.
Kirby’s Pig Stand – the famous historical restaurant chain – claims to have battered and served up the first official onion rings as far back as the 1920s. The restaurant’s location in Dallas, TX, was the first in the world to offer a drive-in service where people could collect food from the convenience of their vehicles.
In many ways, the outlet was the progenitor to the modern fast-food restaurant. The roof was red-tiled and pagoda-like in appearance, and the outer walls made heavy use of stucco to brighten the exterior. Over the years, the company built many more outlets, but eventually, chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell bought them up. In 2006, the company went bankrupt, and the last restaurant closed.
How to celebrate National Onion Ring Day
National Onion Ring Day is your opportunity to get out there and enjoy your favorite deep-fried savory treat. They’re simple to make at home, and while a deep fryer is great, it isn’t essential in their preparation. There are even baked Onion Rings if you decide to go that way, but nothing beats the original. Just heat up a pan of oil until a small drop of batter starts to sizzle when dropped in, and then carefully submerge your coated Onion Rings one by one and cook until a golden brown. There are dozens of recipes online that you can try, and even more recipes for sauces to serve them with.
If making onion rings isn’t your idea of fun, but you like eating them, then you can head out to any one of the dozens of restaurant chains that serves them as part of their daily menu. While many fast-food chains offer onion rings, the best examples come from independent restaurants with proprietary recipes. It’s highly likely that you have at least one of these in your area, serving up rings in the traditional style. Look for local diners with a long history and experienced management. Family businesses tend to be the best.
Some people really don’t like onions. Many won’t go near them, even if they’re covered in batter and deep-fried, but that’s okay. You don’t have to eat onion rings, though, to celebrate National Onion Ring Day – you can branch out. Remember, onion rings were the inspiration for many of the fried snacks and sides that we enjoy today. French fries, deep-fried brie, and fried chicken are all delicious alternatives that you can try if you fancy something different.
There are so many reasons to celebrate National Onion Ring Day. Onion rings are one of the most popular snacks and have become a staple in many parts of the world. They’re a bit like French fries, but taste even more special and delicious in some cases. You can dip them, dunk them, and eat them alongside all your favorite sandwiches and hamburgers. You can even lay them out at a buffet at parties. They’re so flexible!
Onion rings are also instructive for people looking for culinary inspiration. John Mollard – the man behind the 1802 recipe – was a genius. It took the world more than a hundred years to catch up to his vision of the perfect snack. Could you come up with a new recipe that is way ahead of its time?
Happy National Onion Ring Day!

2000: “Ghetto Qu’ran (Forgive Me)” 50 Cent (Trackmaster Ent./Columbia)
It’s been over a year since I teased the idea of doing a post about my favorite 50 Cent tracks, so I guess now is as good a time as ever to get around to it!
With the exception of maybe Kanye, I can’t think of another rapper with more raw talent whose career has been more disappointing. Obviously both Ye and Fiddy have been monstrously successful, but IMO they either burned brightly before descending into white supremacy apologia (Kanye) or never achieved their best possible trajectory (50). It’s not an accident to put them together in this way, either; just 12 years ago next month they faced off in what turned out to be a very underwhelming battle over whose album would sell better (this was back when album sales, not streaming numbers, still meant something). In many ways, it was a crossroads for each artist: Kanye dropped what I believe was his magnum opus, then followed it up with his fourth-best album, third-best album, and second-best album, before dropping off a cliff, while 50′s release basically removed him from the conversation about who was relevant in rap (“My Gun Go Off” and “I Get Money” are honorable mentions for the list below, but otherwise Curtis is entirely forgettable).
These days, 50 has gone the Ice Cube route and is probably more recognizable as an actor than as a rapper. So, it’s hard to remember that once upon a time he was the savior of gangsta rap and (co-)author of one of the 25 greatest albums of all time. He beat the odds to survive a shooting, link up with the two heaviest hitters (at the time) in the rap game, and even be included on some GOAT lists. He also essentially established the “flood the streets with mixtapes before your album drops” strategy of self-promotion that Gucci, Weezy, and even Drake would follow in the days before Soundcloud was the go-to resource for building a rep. He singlehandedly destroyed a rival’s career, launched a clothing line, video game, and music label, and made a halfway-decent biopic. And then... he just sort of petered out.
But! 50 is also responsible for some of my all-time favorite raps, which is why it’s so frustrating to me that he never lived up to the buzz surrounding him back in 2003. These are my five favorites, listed chronologically, with some commentary:
1) “Ghetto Qu’ran (Forgive Me)” (2000) Before the G-Unit days and before Eminem and Dre helped launch him to superstardom, Curtis Jackson was an up and coming rapper from Queens who had attracted the attention of another rap legend, Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay. A mutual friend introduced 19 year-old 50 to Jay back in 1996, and the veteran producer/DJ gave him a crash course in how to write songs and signed him to his fledgling label. The business relationship didn’t work out, but it helped lead 50 to Columbia Records’ Trackmasters imprint where he recorded Power of the Dollar in 1999. However, this debut album would never see the light of day after 50 was shot nine times while sitting in a friend’s car and subsequently dropped by Columbia. In the wake of the shooting--and then later, after 50 blew the fuck up in 2003--it became a sort of “lost cult classic” among rap fans. “How To Rob” got the most attention at the time, a funny-yet-vicious song demonstrating 50′s hunger through fantasies about sticking up famous rappers and R&B stars (the song was also clearly an homage to Biggie’s unreleased “Dreams,” and provoked an oblique diss from Ghostface). But “Ghetto Qu’ran” has had a more lasting impact, primarily because of how it was rumored to be the source of 50′s shooting, Jam Master Jay’s murder, and the Ja Rule/Murder Inc. beef. While all of that intrigue is important to rap lore, it distracts from the fact that it’s a near perfect rap song from a technical perspective: a catchy hook, a fantastic beat and sample, an effortless flow, and a well-crafted story that is equal parts celebration of the Queens underworld and subtle shots at street legends. Seriously, this is akin to what traveling bards used to do in medieval Europe, what poets in Ancient Greece wrote, what west African griots did/do, and what narcocorrido artists do now. If you want to learn about the Supreme Team, Pappy Mason, the Corley Family, and the Rich Porter/Alpo crew in Harlem, then this is a good place to start; as 50 puts it, “consider this the first chapter of the ghetto’s Qu’ran.” The secondary title to this track--“Forgive Me”--has a double meaning now. It was initially a plea to forgive 50 for the pain he caused in his criminal life but in retrospect an appeal to the figures whose names he drops. Also, it’s interesting to listen to this first and then compare 50′s voice with the next four tracks: this was recorded before the shooting, which left a bullet fragment lodged in his tongue that affected his speech and gave him his now-distinctive flow.
2) “Heat” (2003) There are several standouts on Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (“Many Men,” “Back Down,” “What Up Gangsta,” “Patiently Waiting,” and “Poor Lil’ Rich” spring to mind, and I will always love “21 Questions” for the “I love you like a fat kid loves cake” line alone) but this one has always been my fave. It’s a perfect distillation of the image that 50 was trying to project when he burst onto the scene: a hood-hardened gangster who wouldn’t hesitate to do his enemies harm. And given his recent history, you could believe him, too! There’s really nothing about this song that should be praised in any way, but I’ve been thinking about the gravity of the following line a lot in the past month or so: “The summertime is a killing season/ It’s hot out this bitch, that’s a good enough reason.” Also, 50′s boast “the DA can play this motherfucking tape in court” *has* to be one of the inspirations behind this great Key & Peele sketch, right?
3) “A Baltimore Love Thing” (2005) The Massacre was incredibly disappointing on the whole. I can remember clearly sitting around with my friends in a dorm room at the Shoreland listening to it all the way through the day that it dropped, wanting to love it but slowly realizing that it wasn’t going to live up to our expectations. “Ski Mask Way” could be an honorable mention on this list, and “Piggy Bank” is kind of funny, but otherwise it’s a steaming pile of shit. “Baltimore Love Thing,” though, is a masterpiece. It’s incredibly dark, rapped from the perspective of heroin itself (sort of like what Nas’s “I Gave You Power” does for guns) in order to detail the destruction that addiction--and, by extension, drug trafficking--leaves in its wake. Even more fucked up, 50-as-heroin voices an abusive partner addressing a woman, threatening her should she ever try to leave him. For my money, “You broke my heart, you dirty bitch, I won’t forget what you did/ If you give birth, I’ll already be in love with your kids” is one of the coldest lines in the annals of rap, full stop. In the second verse, he switches to the flip side of an abuser’s mindset: “I never steer you wrong, if you hyper I make you calm/ I’ll be your incentive, your reason for you to move forward.” All in all, it’s a great concept song that shows off 50′s range as a rapper... and is a testament to what he could have been.
4) “Hustler’s Ambition” (2005) Goddamn, I fucking love everything about this song! The beat is fantastic (great sample, btw), prefiguring the sound on a future great mixtape from the G-Unit crew. 50′s flow here is flawless, arguably the best, smoothest he’s ever been. This was basically the “theme” for 2005′s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ film, and tells the story of his come up in the drug game (or, at least, 50′s version of his carefully constructed hagiography). The lyrics are the true gems here, so I’ll just let a few of the standouts speak for themselves:
“Check my logic: fiends don’t like seeds in they weed, shit/ Send me them seeds, I’ll grow ‘em what they need”
“I sell anything, I’m a hustler, I know how to grind/ Step on grapes, put it in water, and tell you it’s wine”
“I made plans to make it, a prisoner of the state/ Now I can invite your ass out to my estate”
“Pour Cristal in the blender, make a protein shake”
and finally
“The feds watch me, icy, they can’t stop me/ Racists pointing at me, ‘Look at *****race’: Hello!”
5) “Ghetto Like A Motherfucker” (2011) I remember first encountering this track on a Tumblr compilation (I think?) called Don’t Fuck This Up, Curtis! and allowing myself to get excited that the old 50 was back! As the compilation’s name implies, around that time 50 had been releasing a string of online-only singles that were better than anything he’d put out in five or so years, and so there was some hope that he’d soon be making a triumphant return to the rap game. Sadly, this was not to be. But I still bang this track every month or so. The idea here was that 50 had written something, set it to a very sparse, stripped-down beat, and posted it online as an invitation for DIY rap producers to play with it and layer their own compositions on top of it. In that sense, it represented a melange of rap’s earliest roots--dudes spitting over vinyl cuts in basements and parks, just fucking around and having fun--and the possibilities afforded by the digital age and rap’s embrace of online platforms for mixing and remixing material (on a side note, I like to think of this as part of 21st century rap’s “punk rock” aesthetic, and would argue that this genre has done it better than any other). As with “Hustler’s Ambition,” “Baltimore Love Thing,” and “Ghetto Qu’ran,” this track gives 50 a chance to really showcase his talents as a writer and a rapper. The lyrics are as grimy as the beat, painting a picture of urban poverty and pre-fame 50, and 50 switches up his flow at multiple points throughout. Here are some of my favorite lines:
“Slim chance I’ma go back to killing roaches/ Be quiet, you can hear the rats in the wall/ Make you wanna pump crack ‘til you stack racks”
“Dice game, shake ‘em up, praying’ for a 6/ The wolves out there hungry, they lookin’ for a lick”
“****** pissed on the staircase, in the elevator/ Now I’m pissed cuz I’m starting to smell like piss, player”
and
“All a ***** need is a block and a connect/ And a box of 9 MMs to load in the TEC.”
50′s last two studio albums--Before I Self Destruct and Animal Ambition--honestly weren’t half-bad; I would venture so far as to say that they were both better than The Massacre and Curtis. But for 50 it was too little, too late, really. Too many rappers had come along since then doing what he did, only better and fresher. This is a Migos world now; we’re just living in it. And so, I’m left to ponder what could have been.

Start a Business on Amazon With a Sustainable, Scalable Business Model in 5 Easy Steps
Starting your own business is fun, scary, and smart. Especially if you’re using the proven Amazon FBA business model. So if you’re ready to take the plunge into unlimited earning potential, here are the steps to get started.
#1: Set Up Your Account
First thing’s first, set up your Amazon selling account. If you already have a selling account, all you have to do is log in and add Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).
If you don’t have a selling account with Amazon yet, you can sign up for one online. You’ll be prompted to choose a selling plan, either individual or professional.
You’ll also need info like:
• Business email address
• Government ID
• Tax information
• Phone number
• Bank account information
When you’ve got an Amazon selling account set up, and you’ve signed up for FBA, it’s time to move on to the next step
#2: Pick Your Product
Next up, research your market like there’s no tomorrow. The key is identifying a product that other sellers don’t offer.
Here are some ways to get started:
Get a browser extension
Use a tool like Zoof to scour Amazon. Zoof will pick up sales data from Amazon and organize it into an easy-to-understand dashboard. This helps you research competitors, categories, products, and more.
Start with your interests and passions Think about things you like to do and know a lot about — and make a list. For example, maybe you like to camp on the weekends. Then, head over to Amazon and run a search for each interest on your list and a search term like “accessories.” Here are some examples:
Interests and Hobbies Search Terms
Camping Accessories
Wine Drinking Gear
Cooking Tools
Home Office Supplies
Mountain Biking Product
Pull one term from the left, and one term from the right. Search through Amazon and bookmark products you can picture yourself using in real life. Then run each one through the (Listed below)
Search through BSR categories
BSR, or Best Sellers Rank, is an Amazon label that highlights indemand products. You can use this orange BSR label to your advantage with some quick searches.
In short, BSRs show that a product, or a niche, is popular. Find a product or niche that has at least one BSR. Then narrow and broaden your search until you find multiple BSRs in the same category. Run those products through the starter product checklist to make sure it’s a viable product.
The starter product checklist
Narrow down your search through a baseline metrics comparison. When you think you’ve found the ultimate product to sell, ask yourself if it checks all these boxes:
Good profit potential – Your product can bring in between $10k and $25k each month.
Not too competitive – There are fewer than 1k reviews on Amazon. Low inventory investment – Your product sells for a price somewhere between $17 and $100 each.
If your product checks all these boxes, chances are you’ve found a winner. And now that you’ve chosen a product, the hard part’s over. Next up is getting it on Amazon. There are a couple of parts to this.
Find a supplier
Most Amazon FBA business owners work with suppliers in China. They’re one of the world’s top manufacturers and you just can’t beat their prices. But how do you find a supplier overseas? And how do you know if they’re legit?
Use this checklist to find and vet manufacturers in China:
• Check online marketplaces like Alibaba or JimTrade
• Visit trade shows to talk with suppliers one-on-one
• If you have the extra cash, work with a product sourcing agency
• Make sure they’re used to working with private label brands
• Talk with your supplier before shipment to make sure packaging lines up with Amazon FBA guidelines.
Once you’ve found a quality supplier, use these steps to get your product made: 1. Verify you can make a profit
2. Make at least one improvement to the product. Look through other product reviews for ideas on which improvements to make
3. Order some samples
4. Place your order and have it delivered to an Amazon
#3: Launch Your Product
Here’s the fun part — launching your product. Come up with a clear name for your brand, and a logo and product description. The more complete your Amazon listing is, the better.
Remember, you have the advantage here as a native English speaker. Lots of sellers on Amazon are overseas, but most of Amazon’s customers are in North America. Take your time to write a product description that’s compelling — and optimize it for search terms.
Here are some additional tips for the perfect product page:
• Put your primary keyword toward the beginning of the description
• Focus on the benefits of your products
• Get at least 5 to 10 reviews
• Get high-quality images
Some sellers choose to use stock photographs from the supplier. But all you need is a smartphone camera, a ring light or two, and some basic photo tips to take next-level images. Plus, if you use your own photos, you’ll stand out against any other sellers with the same product.
Before you start selling out every month, you need to get your hands on the first few positive reviews. Ask your friends, ask your family, and post on social media about your new product.
You can also temporarily lower your prices to entice new buyers. Then encourage them to leave detailed, positive reviews. Once you’ve got a handful of 5-star posts, you can start raising your prices to earn a profit. But before then, you have to get people to notice your product. Reviews help. Social media helps. And sponsored product listings help, too. You can also:
• Create compelling coupons
• Launch a manual advertising campaign
• Drive sales through cash-back offers
#4: Grow Your Sales
You’ve got your product. You’re earning revenue. Now it’s time to start growing your sales. Here are six guidelines to follow when you’re ready to take the next step:
Don’t Waste time on social media
Don’t Spend a ton of time making a website
Don’t lnvest in influencer marketing
Don’t Sell in big stores
Do Decrease advertising costs
Do lncrease advertising profits
Do Get more reviews
Even though your brand is important, it’s critical you don’t spend time on the wrong activities. Things like social media, designing a high-tech website, or spending tons of money on influencers waste precious resources.
Instead, invest your time and money in smarter advertising.
• Amazon tells you which keywords are wasting ad spend
• Remove the keywords that aren’t working for you (add them as negative keywords)
• Amazon also tells you which keywords are making you money
• Click “Add as keyword” under your search terms menu in Amazon to start making more money
• Use Amazon’s “Request a Review” function to encourage buyers who’ve recently ordered from you
#5: Expand Your Brand
Now that your starter product is up, running, and raking in the cash, it’s time to start expanding. Get ready to add two additional products that’ll skyrocket revenue.
Product Price Revenue
Starter $17 - $100 $10K - $25K
Growth $17 - $100 $25K - $50K
Dream > $17 > $50K
First, research a growth product. It’ll have the same price range as your starter product, but it’ll have higher earning potential.
Then, research a dream product. It can be any price, as long as it’s above $17. And it has unlimited earning potential.
These three products work together as your brand. Each has a different price point and revenue bracket. And each tier supports a diverse, robust brand that’s designed to make you some serious money. Repeat steps two through four to launch your growth product and your dream product.
Flywheel Marketing (Cross-Selling)
Once all three products are launched on Amazon, switch gears and focus on cross-selling (also known as flywheel marketing). This practice exposes customers to all your products while they shop online, even if they weren’t searching for them.
You can do this through:
• Virtual bundles
• Product ads
• Promotions
For example, let’s say your starter product is a tent. Your growth product is blow-up mattresses. And your dream product is a portable camping grill. When a shopper searches for and finds your blow-up mattress, you show them your other products, too. You suggest that they might also need a tent or a portable grill to cook food
Flywheel marketing encourages shoppers to buy multiple products from your line to save money or complete a set. In short, you lead customers through their shopping journey. And at each step along the journey, you show them what you offer and why your products are valuable. Let’s call this a rotation.
With enough rotations, the flywheel starts to turn itself — generating sales, new leads, and more orders along the way

From 'dirty' to 'vintage': luxury embraces second-hand
For years they were like cat and dog. Luxury brands did not want to know anything about the second-hand sale of their clothing and accessories. Too little control, too little exclusive, too much mothball smell. But that period is over now.
The best selection, at the best prices. That is the way the online platform for second-hand designer clothes Grailed[1] praises itself. Vinted[2], but for luxury designer brands, with a focus on men. In a new round of investment, the site raised about $60 million last week.
The major investor is the luxury group Kering[3], that is owned by the Pinault family. Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Gucci, among others, fall under the umbrella of the group. On Friday, Gucci also announced its new online concept store: in addition to new pieces, Vault also offers vintage, selected by Gucci designer Alessandro Michele. Gone are the days when luxury houses turned their noses up at vintage.
“Second-hand has always existed, although luxury houses have long resisted it,” says Emmanuelle Dirix, lecturer in fashion history and culture at the Academy in Antwerp. It is not illogical that large fashion houses did not want to know about it: brands that live on luxury and exclusivity were not set up with the idea that you could buy a 'real' design for less money.
In 2018, Chanel even filed a lawsuit against What Goes Around Comes Around[4]. The company, that sells second-hand clothing and accessories from luxury brands, lived on the reputation of luxury brands, according to Chanel. The brand denounced that counterfeits as 'true vintage' were also sold on the site – something that has been an thorn in the flesh of many luxury brands for years.
But the time when second-hand is 'dirty' is long gone. A younger generation that wants to buy brands is looking to second-hand online. The Realreal[5], Depop[6], Grailed, Vestiaire Collective[7]: online platforms for second-hand luxury goods have sprung up like mushrooms in recent years. A Boston Consulting study[8] estimates the industry's annual growth rate at 12 percent. In that context, the 3 percent growth of the 'normal' luxury segment appears to be small beer. Dirix: 'Simply put: if you can't beat them, join them'.
Fake
It also gives brands the opportunity to have more control over the second-hand sales of their own products. Grailed is working on an online authentication system, other sites such as Vestiaire Collective and Goat[9] work with 'specialists' who have to check items to prevent counterfeiting.
This is done by looking at the workmanship – so you need a small army of specialists – or by examining the labels in each item, where you can find out whether something is real on the basis of a type of 'serial numbers'. “But those databases are of course largely held by the brands, especially with older collections,” says Dirix.
More than that, it gives brands access to another market: young people who may not go to the Gucci store, but do buy brands online. Especially if it can be done cheaper. And even more valuable is that brands have access to a wealth of information about a younger clientele: what does a younger generation want, and which former pieces are worth dating up. Many sites such as Grailed are established for and by people who resell second-hand. That information is worth its weight in gold for many brands. Brands immediately adopt a new and greener image', thinks Dirix.
Surplus
Speaking of ecology, second-hand platforms are an excellent way for luxury brands to get rid of their unsold stock, Dirix thinks. Many luxury brands do not hold sales, for fear of destroying their own market. The only way to get rid of their surplus stock is through internal sales for their own staff – often with a maximum budget per employee, to avoid the clothing ending up en masse on the second-hand market.
Moreover, brands cannot and may not just destroy their unsold items. Especially since 2018, when it turned out that Burberry had burned $37 million worth of stuff in July that year, that has been monitored. In France it is even prohibited by law.
"I suspect that luxury concerns such as Kering may see a solution in this to get rid of those unsold items," says Dirix. ‘What is not sold now will be “vintage” in a few years. That might provide an answer to a very thorny issue for them.”
However, the prices on the second-hand sites are also not nothing: on Vault[10] you can quickly count 800 euros for a vintage Gucci. Dirix: 'Sites like Grailed aim at an audience that has enough purchasing power to buy a trendy vintage dress on a carefully curated platform. The site itself is almost already a “seal of approval”. These people are not fashion fanatics who feel like scouring tired second-hand shops or Ebay to find real gems for no money with a lot of patience and searching.'

3 Reasons Why French Roast Coffee Is Good For Espresso
Nothing beats a perfectly pulled shot of espresso – the intense aroma and flavor, the rich crema, and much-needed caffeine kick. But, to achieve perfection each time, it all starts with the right beans. The best roast to use for coffee shots is a medium to dark roast. While there is no such thing as espresso beans, some companies produce their own “espresso blends” to create flavors and tastes they deem appropriate for espresso.
French roast coffee is good for espresso as it is pretty dark; it has a smoky flavor with some light citrusy notes for more complexity in your beverage. It may be slightly intense for some people, but many coffee lovers enjoy using it for espresso-based drinks.
Let’s explore more of what French Roast coffee is and its flavors; let’s also look at how it compares to Espresso Roast. It helps to know how this roast compares to other coffees to decide if it’s something you want to try.
French Roast beans are pretty dark. They are nearly as dark as the Italian roast, and these dark roasts fair better for espresso than lighter ones.
If you roasted coffee beans to a French Roast at home, you would want to achieve the “second crack” – evidence that the beans’ internal structure is starting to break down.
This calls for the internal temperature to be at 240 C (463 F). Also, look out for the quintessential oily sheen on the beans’ surface. With French Roast coffee, you can expect a decent, full body of flavor with every brew.
French roast might seem like a very confusing term if you only know light, medium, and dark roast coffee. French roast doesn’t mean the beans were grown or even roasted in France ( even though that was where the roasting style originated in the 1800s); it simply describes the color of the coffee beans once they have been roasted.
There is lots of variety between French Roasts but also some essential similarities. The high temperatures in the roasting process always bring the oils to the surface, giving a smoky, roasted flavor to the espresso.
The coffee also possesses some lighter attributes like citrus or berry notes despite the darker roasting process. French Roasts from Sumatra typically have mushroom, earthy flavors that beautifully set the dark brown roast.
Be aware that there are usually specific issues with many French Roasts. For starters, they tend to lose their freshness sooner than lighter roasts.
This is because the oils turn rancid faster than beans with the oil still encased inside. The only solution is to purchase only the amount of whole bean coffee you need for the week.
Another issue is that many French Roast coffees come from blends that use inferior quality beans; many roasters try to mask the poor-quality coffee by roasting it very dark.
The key to getting great French Roast coffee is to purchase from quality roasters with the Fair Trade mark – as you also want to promote equitable relationships between farmers and roasters.
Is Starbucks French Roast Coffee Good For Espresso?
Starbucks’ French Roast is an excellent coffee for making espressos due to its dark color. It’s also not too acidic and has a light body while having bold flavors.
Starbucks’ French Roast is unsurprisingly one of the company’s most popular roasts; it is 100% Arabica, which is the best bean – it’s been much loved by customers since 1971. It comes from the Asia Pacific and Latin America.
The coffee house may have intended to use French Roast for pour-over and not necessarily espresso machines. However, many people like making espressos with French Roast coffee.
The French Roast is Starbucks’ darkest coffee, and the first thing that hits you is the smokiness; you can taste it and smell it, which is heaven for many coffee fans.
The best way to taste French Roast is straight from a French press as it is better at retaining the coffee’s natural oils for a more full-bodied flavor.
Whichever method you decide to make coffee with the French roast, measuring your coffee as darker coffees weigh less in volume than blonde/light roasts due to their porous nature.
The grind size is critical; it’s best to use whole coffee beans and grind them yourself. For making espresso, you need a fine grind which you can quickly achieve with a burr grinder.
French Roast Vs. Espresso Roast
Many major coffee Industries, including Starbucks, have “Espresso Roast” labeled on some of their coffees; we understand there is no such bean as an espresso bean.
Some roasters produce Espresso roasts because they have decided that some of their green beans will taste better as an espresso.
The roaster makes this decision by sampling some of the coffee and tasting it during different brewing methods. When they discover that making it as espresso will bring out the most from their coffee, they take the rest of the beans and roast them with espresso-making in mind.
The beans selected for the Espresso Roast will be roasted a little darker than coffee intended for filter coffee. The reason being that many espresso shots will be added to milk beverages, and a darker roasted coffee produces more complimentary tastes with smoky undertones and caramelized notes.
Those flavors pair better with milk than a lighter roast with more acidity; even when there is some acidity in the dark roast, the sugars in the milk balance out any bitter taste.
Extraction is affected by different roasts; as you roast a coffee bean, gases build up inside the cells, which makes the bean stretch which makes the bean more porous.
This is crucial, as the more porous the beans, the easier it is for the water, during extraction, to get inside the cells and draw out all the beans’ flavors and aromatics, and it takes up less water.
French Roast and Espresso Roast are pretty similar in color, and they are both full-bodied coffees with robust flavors; they are both 100% Arabica, but there are some differences.
French roast is smoky and intense, while the Espresso Roast is sweet and caramelly. While French Roast works well for espresso, it tastes best when used for French Press coffee, as this draws out all the oils in the bean.
The roasters that make Espresso Roast coffee know what they are doing, and the beans they have will taste their best in espresso-based drinks.
Which Coffee Beans Are Best For Espresso?
While you can use any coffee beans you like, certain beans will taste better as espresso. Darker roasted beans are better to make espresso than lighter roasts.
The coffee industry understands that certain beans produce a more espresso flavor that cannot be achieved with regular beans, and people expect the espresso they order to taste a certain way.
A dark roast will always pair better with milk for cappuccinos and lattes, as the dark roast balances the creaminess of the milk.
It’s best to use roasts that are somewhere in the middle of the dark spectrum; this way, you can guarantee good results for lattes and flat whites in addition to single coffee shots.
You will know that a bean is dark if the oil migrates outside of the bean. French and Italian roasts, which are dark, always have a shiny surface. Fully roasted coffee will be dark but dry in appearance, and this roast might be too dark even for espresso.
When looking at bags of coffee, check out the roast date. As with all kinds of coffee, espresso tastes better when fresh, and the best period for espresso is one to four weeks after being roasted.
When buying coffee online, buy your coffee straight from the roaster, it may cost more in shipping, but this way, you can guarantee fresher roasted beans.
There is a lot of debate between Arabica and Robusta, and Robusta has had some bad publicity. The commercial coffee industry sees Arabica as a superior coffee bean while they see Robusta as an inferior bean.
While it is rare to get delicious Robusta, it is possible. Robusta, by nature, is less acidic and less sweet than Arabica, but then it has more caffeine and a better crema.
A properly grown Robusta can taste very pleasant as a single-origin espresso. Some companies source the finest Robusta beans, but generally, it is used to make powder coffees.
If you want to try Robusta, you need to purchase from a reputable company. A few brands are selling 100% Robusta beans like Death Wish, Caffe Borbone, and Vinacafe, and they are well worth a look.
Final Thoughts
French Roast Coffee is good for espresso, you may or may not like it, but it’s worth at least trying it. Coffee is meant to be enjoyed, and it doesn’t hurt to experiment with different blends, roasts, bean species, and methods; you don’t have to only use coffee labeled “espresso blend” for espresso. So give French Roast espresso a try.

because i was born in the age of miracles, earth, wind, fire, war, temptations, and wonder doesn’t mean i don’t know hip hop grandmaster flash and the furious five played on my radio after james brown took me to the bridge i was alive when the j5 died and michael was born when a prince bridged the funkadelic gap with a new kind of freaky and hip hop morphed from breakdancing to krump lyrics to rhymes sampling to beats bombing trains to walls cassettes to discs youth wear to rocawear fad to culture fringe to suburbs edgy to mainstream run-d.m.c. played “it’s like that” and as hip hop was named and grew and went thru the t-phase of ice, the ice age of cubes, back to the t-stage of pain, i continued to channel mtv, bet, vh1, and tv1 i’ve watched grand slam, ego trip, scratch, xxl, the source, and vibe mags ride high times, die, thrive, re-invent online words like shawty define a girl swagg a style and dope mean good as language and symbols became entwined writers like dondi and rammellzee tagged trains and graffiti became the name white commentators on mainline news spoke words like dissed white boys became niggaz black boys like n.w.a., dr. dre, snoop dogg, the notorious b.i.g., 50 cent began to justify the use of hateful language, claiming they were changing definitions, making them respectful yes, my ears were tweaked scratching albums grated my nerves the thought occurred, “what a waste of good albums” i was at the birth of fubu, phat pharm, sean john, g-unit, vocal, and ecko i watched puff daddy change to diddy and puffy to p ludacris sell 50,000 cds from the trunk of his car and jay z become part owner of the new jersey nets finding and following the entrepreneurial footprints forged by russell simmons as he plotted a map and laid tracks for a subway system destined to thrive i watched fame and time take its toll on biggie and tupac and idol worship become a way to declare the least of us worthy and the best of us questionable i watched east coast west coast become more than a state of mind and watched brothers hate brothers because history’s lessons of divide and rule weren’t learned and radio stations wouldn’t play the truth i’ve watched michael franti get less airtime than lil wayne, just like scott-heron got less airtime than superfly i’ve watched rappers call queens of their families by their genitalia mothers, sisters, daughters, and nieces called bitches and hoes, until they had daughters of their own i’ve watched so-called poets spit lame game on the back of wordsmiths like scott-heron and the last poets without giving props until more politically and socially conscious rappers and singers, sisters and brothers like rakim, erykah badu, krs-1, nas, mos def, de la soul, india arie, and arrested development realized history and self-esteem weren’t being recognized, and game without history ain’t game it’s a mis-read, a nuclear bomb targeting those most deceived i’ve kept up with definitions as they evolved and got to know emcees like melle mel, kurtis blow, 2pac, jay z, big daddy kane, eminem, common, lyte, latifah, and lauryn hill there were times i tuned out lyrics ’cause they were disrespectful of the rights we fought and died for contemptuous of our queen and queen mothers disavowing the love we learned to give ourselves as we went from negroes, to black to african-hyphenated, hyphenated back to black, and then part this, part that but never tuning out the development of the culture, ’cause i didn’t die when i turned fifty-five i am hip hop, as i am the blues, jazz, gospel, r&b, country, music, and life i wasn’t born when bechet blew summertime and monk didn’t visit me when I was a child they didn’t turn on my table or know they’d play on my pod but today they are as much a part of my soul as stevie, aretha, marvin, nina, and teddy i’ve listened to new school disciples declare old school dead without knowing what school is because they refuse to go and when they do they don’t pay attention or practice the business of learning i know chris brown’s tears don’t wash away the bludgeoning he gave sister rihanna and the example he set for the next generation i’ve watched the old and new regimes janelle monae, young money, monica, songz, drake, ne-yo, usher, musiq soulchild, legend, and keys a softer side of hip hop, light a tunnel new music, beats, lyrics, and soundz and know hip hop doesn’t have an age any more than jazz, blues, r&b, gospel, or me

What is a Landing Page? Different Types of Landing Pages
As you browse and maneuver around the internet, gorgeous landing pages are always waiting for you.
A landing page is the first thing you see when clicking on an advertisement or call-to-action button.
Landing page is a website home that has the objective of converting visitors into leads.
We help you build compelling landing pages that convert better.
With our amazing landing page design services, we'll have your customers begging to sign up with a single click!
A successful site will generate more and better qualified prospects for your business, so it's important to take advantage of this opportunity by using one now!
What is a Landing Page?
Landing pages can be customized based on your company's needs.
A landing page is a webpage that appears when someone clicks on a link or searches for your company online.
Landing pages are important to help customers find what they need and keep them engaged, so make sure you have the perfect one before launching!
You will want to decide if you are creating a click-through page that leads users away from the landing site
It is for lead generation where potential customers provide contact information in exchange for an item like an eBook, free trial, contest entry and webinar registration.
A good landing page persuades visitors with whatever incentives they have available as well as providing them more of what they need to know before submitting their personal details by including relevant links at the bottom of each section.
Landing pages can either be found through general searches online or via the following hyperlinks directly back to its original source.
There are a lot of different Types of Landing Pages out there. It's hard to keep track, but luckily I'm here! Below is an overview.
Lead Generation Landing Page
The lead generation landing page is designed entirely with input from the visitor in mind.
It's goal is to persuade visitors into giving up their 'lead' (contact information) and anything that does not directly support that goal will be cut out completely.
This means that you'll rarely see bells, whistles or an elaborate design on a lead generation landing page since it's sole purpose is to obtain leads and not impress you with over-designed graphics.
landing page can be quickly skimmed by potential customers while retaining valuable information and leaving them wanting more through effective content creation/layout.
A successful lead generation landing page can be quickly skimmed by potential customers while retaining valuable information and leaving them wanting more through effective content creation/layout.
Click-Through Landing Page
Click-through landing pages are used to advertise a service or product.
They're designed to grab the attention of potential customers and will usually include an eye-catching design, enticing copy and/or a video demonstrating how your business can solve their problem.
This form of landing page is typically only intended as one in a series (of multiple) that end with an actual purchase.
So you should see information about additional products/services they may be interested in when visiting your site through this landing page It's important not to overwhelm them before even giving them what they want!
To keep things simple, click-through landing pages often lead directly to another sales page after asking for contact details.
Viral Landing Pages
Viral landing pages are designed to quickly spread your message as far and wide as possible in the shortest amount of time possible.
They're created with an eye towards search engine optimization (SEO) so that they'll attract more visitors organically (without any additional effort on your part).
These kinds of landing pages commonly redirect visitors to other social networking sites.
They can quickly like, share or otherwise support your business by spreading the word about it.
There's no beating around the bush here: these landing pages are spammy at best and borderline illegal at worst.
Do not make one unless you want a bonfire burning in front of your house 24/7!
Squeeze landing pages
Squeeze landing pages are designed to get the absolute most out of your visitors in return for minimal information. They're focused on a specific goal and will usually offer a situation-specific freebie, sample or service to entice you into giving them contact details.
But this is where they stop short of actually providing that same freebie/sample/service before asking you for said contact details.
Squeeze landing pages can be used for lead generation but their primary purpose it to get more of what you need
Sales Landing Page
Sales landing pages are designed to give you exactly what they promise: a specific product for the price indicated directly on the page.
The idea is that visitors will read through your sales pitch and be seduced into buying whatever it is you're selling because of how well written your copy is; not because of flair or flashiness!
While this might sound boring, remember: boring works - especially if it's clear, concise and has all the information necessary right there for them.
It's also a good idea to include an incentive like free shipping for customers who buy immediately as well as any other available discounts.
Sales landing pages are one of the most common types, and for good reason: people like buying things!
404 Landing Page
404 (Page Not Found) landing pages are designed to show visitors the error in their ways and invite them to explore your site again or try a different path/search query.
One thing that is important about this page is that it should be direct and to the point so they understand immediately what has happened there’s no need for confusion if you can simply solve the problem by relaying the message within seconds!
You should also include an incentive/gift/discount to entice them back into gaining access.
it was they couldn't find originally; otherwise, you could just end up in a vicious cycle of perpetual 404ing.
Unsubscribe Landing Page
Unsubscribe landing pages are designed to give users the opportunity to opt out of whatever it is you're sending them (i.e.: emails)
So they don't have to see it anymore and can get on with their day/night/weekend without interruption!
Every business should include an unsubscribe landing page even if you don't use email marketing, there's always something that visitors might be sent (marketing SMS text messages, etc.)
Where email marketing is used as a funnel into a database that is segmented by SEO-friendly URLs for one reason or another and unsubscribing from your list is just as important to the success of your business as a functioning website!
Splash Landing Page
Splash landing pages are designed to give visitors the opportunity to try your service/product without having to deal with signing up, setting up an account or any other hassle that goes along with making a purchase online.
These landing pages often times have mobile-specific versions and also work for basic web services like "signing up" for a blog or newsfeed subscription.
Short-term trial offers are also popular on the splash landing pages
They offer you an opportunity to determine whether or not customers will pay you back before going all-in on something long-term which is why display ads that lead directly into splash landing pages can be so effective!
Conclusion:
It really depends on what your campaign goals are but generally speaking a more focused landing page will convert better.
The conversion rates of standalone pages, versus sending visitors to the homepage, is 25% higher (source Omniture).
They bounce your message back to you, so that it is easier for others to understand what you want them to know about why they should buy from us or join our email list.
Landing pages are extremely important in the world of marketing. With so many options, it can be hard to know what type is best for your business.

Saudi Aramco Sells Oil Pipeline Stake for $12.4 Billion Here’s what you need to know: Lee Delaney joined BJ’s in 2016 as executive vice president and chief growth officer, and he became chief executive last year.Credit…Gretchen Ertl/Associated Press Lee Delaney, the president and chief executive of BJ’s Wholesale Club, died unexpectedly on Thursday of “presumed natural causes,” according to a statement released Friday by the company. He was 49. “We are shocked and profoundly saddened by the passing of Lee Delaney,” said Christopher J. Baldwin, the company’s executive chairman, said in a statement. “Lee was a brilliant and humble leader who cared deeply for his colleagues, his family and his community.” Mr. Delaney joined BJ’s in 2016 as executive vice president and chief growth officer. He was promoted to president in 2019 and became chief executive last year. Before joining BJ’s, he was a partner in the Boston office of Bain & Company from 1996 to 2016. Mr. Delaney earned a master’s in business administration from Carnegie Mellon University, and attended the University of Massachusetts, where he pursued a double major in computer science and mathematics. Mr. Delaney led the company through the unexpected changes in consumer demand spurred by the pandemic, with many customers stockpiling wholesale goods as they hunkered down at home. “2020 was a remarkable, transformative and challenging year that structurally changed our business for the better,” Mr. Delaney said in the company’s last quarterly earnings report. The BJ’s board appointed Bob Eddy, the chief administrative and financial officer, to serve as the company’s interim chief executive. Mr. Eddy joined the company in 2007 and became the chief financial officer in 2011, adding the job of chief administrative officer in 2018. “Bob partnered closely with Lee and has played an integral role in transforming and growing BJ’s Wholesale Club,” Mr. Baldwin said. He said that the company would announce decisions about its permanent executive leadership in a “reasonably short timeframe.” BJ’s, based in Westborough, Mass., operates 221 clubs and 151 BJ’s Gas locations in 17 states. Revolut’s office in London in 2018. The banking start-up is offering its workers the opportunity to work abroad for up to two months a year.Credit…Tom Jamieson for The New York Times Before the pandemic, companies used to lure top talent with lavish perks like subsidized massages, Pilates classes and free gourmet meals. Now, the hottest enticement is permission to work not just from home, but from anywhere — even, say, from the French Alps or a Caribbean island. Revolut, a banking start-up based in London, said Thursday that it would allow its more than 2,000 employees to work abroad for up to two months a year in response to requests to visit overseas family for longer periods. “Our employees asked for flexibility, and that’s what we’re giving them as part of our ongoing focus on employee experience and choice,” said Jim MacDougall, Revolut’s vice president of human resources. Georgia Pacquette-Bramble, a communications manager for Revolut, said she was planning to trade the winter in London for Spain or somewhere in the Caribbean. Other colleagues have talked about spending time with family abroad. Revolut has been valued at $5.5 billion, making it one of Europe’s most valuable financial technology firms. It joins a number of companies that will allow more flexible working arrangements to continue after the pandemic ends. JPMorgan Chase, Salesforce, Ford Motor and Target have said they are giving up office space as they expect workers to spend less time in the office, and Spotify has told employees they can work from anywhere. Not all companies, however, are shifting away from the office. Tech companies, including Amazon, Facebook, Google and Apple, have added office space in New York over the last year. Amazon told employees it would “return to an office-centric culture as our baseline.” Dr. Dan Wang, an associate professor at Columbia Business School, said he did not expect office-centric companies to lose top talent to companies that allow flexible working, in part because many employees prefer to work from the office. Furthermore, when employees are not in the same space, there are fewer spontaneous interactions, and spontaneity is critical for developing ideas and collaborating, Dr. Wang said. “There is a cost,” he said. “Yes, we can interact via email, via Slack, via Zoom — we’ve all gotten used to that. But part of it is that we’ve lowered our expectations for what social interaction actually entails.” Revolut said it studied tax laws and regulations before introducing its policy, and that each request to work from abroad was subject to an internal review and approval process. But for some companies looking to put a similar policy in place, a hefty tax bill, or at least a complicated tax return, could be a drawback. After its initial public offering imploded, WeWork went public through a SPAC deal.Credit…Kate Munsch/Reuters After weeks of wading into the debate over how to regulate SPACS, the popular blank-check deals that provide companies a back door to public markets, the Securities and Exchange Commission is sending its first shot across the bow. John Coates, the acting director of the corporate finance division at the S.E.C., issued a lengthy statement on Thursday about how securities laws apply to blank-check firms, the DealBook newsletter reports. “With the unprecedented surge has come unprecedented scrutiny,” Mr. Coates wrote of the recent boom in blank-check deals. In particular, he is interested in a crucial (and controversial) difference between SPACs and traditional initial public offerings: blank-check firms are allowed to publish often-rosy financial forecasts when merging with an acquisition target, while companies going public in an I.P.O. are not. Regulators consider such forecasts too risky for firms as yet untested by the public markets. Investors raise money for SPACs via an I.P.O. of a shell company, and those funds are used within two years to merge with an unspecified company, which then also becomes a publicly traded company. Because the deal is technically a merger, it’s given the same “safe harbor” legal protections for its financial forecasts as a typical M.& A. deal. And that’s why there are flying-taxi companies with little revenue going public via a SPAC while promising billions in sales far in the future. The S.E.C. thinks allowing financial forecasts for these deals might be a problem. They can be “untested, speculative, misleading or even fraudulent,” Mr. Coates wrote. And he concludes his statement by suggesting a major rethink of how the “full panoply” of securities laws applies to SPACs, which could upend the blank-check business model. If the S.E.C. does not treat SPAC deals as the I.P.Os they effectively are, he writes, “potentially problematic forward-looking information may be disseminated without appropriate safeguards.” The letter serves as a warning, but perhaps not much else — yet. Unless the S.E.C. issues new rules (as it did for penny stocks) or Congress passes legislation, SPAC projections will continue. But this strongly worded statement could moderate or even mute them. “The S.E.C. has now put them on notice,” Lynn Turner, a former chief accountant of the agency, said. Amazon Warehouse Unionization Votes Either side needed 1,521 votes to win. A total of 505 ballots were challenged; 76 were void.·Source: National Labor Relations Board Amazon beat back the unionization drive at its warehouse in Bessemer, Ala., the counting of ballots in the closely watched effort showed on Friday. A total of 738 workers voted “Yes” to unionize and 1,798 voted “No.” There were 76 ballots marked as void and 505 votes were challenged, according to the National Labor Relations Board. The union leading the drive to organize, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, said most of the challenges were from Amazon. About 50 percent of the 5,805 eligible voters at the warehouse cast ballots in the election. Either side needed to receive more than 50 percent of all cast ballots to prevail. The ballots were counted in random order in the National Labor Relations Board’s office in Birmingham, Ala., and the process was broadcast via Zoom to more than 200 journalists, lawyers and other observers. The voting was conducted by mail from early February until the end of last month. A handful of workers from the labor board called out the results of each vote — “Yes” for a union or “No” — for nearly four hours on Thursday. Sophia June and Miles McKinley contributed to this report. A screenshot of a “vax cards” page on Facebook. Online stores offering counterfeit or stolen vaccine cards have mushroomed in recent weeks, according to Saoud Khalifah, the founder of FakeSpot, which offers tools to detect fake listings and reviews online. The efforts are far from hidden, with Facebook pages named “vax-cards” and eBay listings with “blank vaccine cards” openly hawking the items, Sheera Frenkel reports for The New York Times. Last week, 45 state attorneys general banded together to call on Twitter, Shopify and eBay to stop the sale of false and stolen vaccine cards. Facebook, Twitter, eBay, Shopify and Etsy said that the sale of fake vaccine cards violated their rules and that they were removing posts that advertised the items. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention introduced the vaccination cards in December, describing them as the “simplest” way to keep track of Covid-19 shots. By January, sales of false vaccine cards started picking up, Mr. Khalifah said. Many people found the cards were easy to forge from samples available online. Authentic cards were also stolen by pharmacists from their workplaces and put up for sale, he said. Many people who bought the cards were opposed to the Covid-19 vaccines, Mr. Khalifah said. In some anti-vaccine groups on Facebook, people have publicly boasted about getting the cards. Other buyers want to use the cards to trick pharmacists into giving them a vaccine, Mr. Khalifah said. Because some of the vaccines are two-shot regimens, people can enter a false date for a first inoculation on the card, which makes it appear as if they need a second dose soon. Some pharmacies and state vaccination sites have prioritized people due for their second shots. An empty conference room in New York, which is among the cities with the lowest rate of workers returning to offices.Credit…George Etheredge for The New York Times In only a year, the market value of office towers in Manhattan has plummeted 25 percent, according to city projections released on Wednesday. Across the country, the vacancy rate for office buildings in city centers has steadily climbed over the past year to reach 16.4 percent, according to Cushman & Wakefield, the highest in about a decade. That number could climb further if companies keep giving up office space because of hybrid or fully remote work, Peter Eavis and Matthew Haag report for The New York Times. So far, landlords like Boston Properties and SL Green have not suffered huge financial losses, having survived the past year by collecting rent from tenants locked into long leases — the average contract for office space runs about seven years. But as leases come up for renewal, property owners could be left with scores of empty floors. At the same time, many new office buildings are under construction — 124 million square feet nationwide, or enough for roughly 700,000 workers. Those changes could drive down rents, which were touching new highs before the pandemic. And rents help determine assessments that are the basis for property tax bills. Many big employers have already given notice to the owners of some prestigious buildings that they are leaving when their leases end. JPMorgan Chase, Ford Motor, Salesforce, Target and more are giving up expensive office space and others are considering doing so. The stock prices of the big landlords, which are often structured as real estate investment trusts that pass almost all of their profit to investors, trade well below their previous highs. Shares of Boston Properties, one of the largest office landlords, are down 29 percent from the prepandemic high. SL Green, a major New York landlord, is 26 percent lower. President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during a White House appearance on Thursday.Credit…Amr Alfiky/The New York Times President Biden proposed a vast expansion of federal spending on Friday, calling for a 16 percent increase in domestic programs as he tries to harness the government’s power to reverse what officials called a decade of underinvestment in the nation’s most pressing issues. The proposed $1.52 trillion in spending on discretionary programs would significantly bolster education, health research and fighting climate change. It comes on top of Mr. Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package and a separate plan to spend $2.3 trillion on the nation’s infrastructure. Mr. Biden’s first spending request to Congress showcases his belief that expanding, not shrinking, the federal government is crucial to economic growth and prosperity. It would direct billions of dollars toward reducing inequities in housing and education, as well as making sure every government agency puts climate change at the front of its agenda. It does not include tax proposals, economic projections or so-called mandatory programs like Social Security, which will all be included in a formal budget request the White House will release this spring. Among its major new spending initiatives, the plan would dedicate an additional $20 billion to help schools that serve low-income children and provide more money to students who have experienced racial or economic barriers to higher education. It would create a multi-billion-dollar program for researching diseases like cancer and add $14 billion to fight and adapt to the damages of climate change. It would also seek to lift the economies of Central American countries, where rampant poverty, corruption and devastating hurricanes have fueled migration toward the southwestern border and a variety of initiatives to address homelessness and housing affordability, including on tribal lands. And it asks for an increase of about 2 percent in spending on national defense. The request represents a sharp break with the policies of President Donald J. Trump, whose budget proposals prioritized military spending and border security, while seeking to cut funding in areas like environmental protection. All told, the proposal calls for a $118 billion increase in discretionary spending in the 2022 fiscal year, when compared with the base spending allocations this year. It seeks to capitalize on the expiration of a decade of caps on spending growth, which lawmakers agreed to in 2010 but frequently breached in subsequent years. Administration officials would not specify on Friday whether that increase would result in higher federal deficits in their coming budget proposal, but promised its full budget would “address the overlapping challenges we face in a fiscally and economically responsible way.” As part of that effort, the request seeks $1 billion in new funding for the Internal Revenue Service to enforce tax laws, including “increased oversight of high-income and corporate tax returns.” That is clearly aimed at raising tax receipts by cracking down on tax avoidance by companies and the wealthy. Officials said the proposals did not reflect the spending called for in Mr. Biden’s infrastructure plan, which he introduced last week, or for a second plan he has yet to roll out, which will focus on what officials call “human infrastructure” like education and child care. Congress, which is responsible for approving government spending, is under no requirement to adhere to White House requests. In recent years, lawmakers rejected many of the Trump administration’s efforts to gut domestic programs. But Mr. Biden’s plan, while incomplete as a budget, could provide a blueprint for Democrats who narrowly control the House and Senate and are anxious to reassert their spending priorities after four years of a Republican White House. Stocks on Wall Street climbed further into record territory on Friday: The S&P 500 index rose 0.8 percent, bringing its gain for the week to 2.7 percent. Shares of Amazon rose 2.2 percent after the company prevailed against a unionization drive at a warehouse in Alabama. The relatively steady gains in the stock market have sent the VIX index, a measure of volatility, to its lowest level since February 2020. The index was below 17 points on Friday. In mid-March, as the pandemic shut down parts of the global economy, the VIX had spiked above 80. The yield on 10-year Treasury notes jumped 4 basis points, or 0.04 percentage point, to 1.66 percent. The yield on 10-year government bonds rose across Europe, too. On Thursday, Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, reiterated his intention to keep supporting the economic recovery The rollout of vaccinations meant the United States economy could probably reopen soon, but the recovery was still “uneven and incomplete,” Mr. Powell said at the International Monetary Fund annual conference. European stock indexes were mixed on Friday, though the Stoxx Europe 600 notched its sixth straight week of gains. The DAX index in Germany rose 0.2 percent after data showed an unexpected drop in industrial production. The FTSE 100 in London fell 0.4 percent. Oil prices fell slightly with futures of West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. crude benchmark, 0.4 percent lower to $59.38 a barrel. Just months after returning to the skies, Boeing’s troubled 737 Max jet is facing another setback. Boeing said Friday that it had notified 16 airlines and other customers of a potential electrical problem with the Max and recommended that they temporarily stop flying some planes. The company refused to say how many planes were affected, but four U.S. airlines said they would stop using nearly 70 Max jets. Boeing would not say how long the planes would be sidelined. The statement comes just months after companies resumed flying the jet, which had been grounded for nearly two years because of a pair of accidents that killed nearly 350 people. The company said it would raise $12.4 billion from selling a minority stake in its oil pipeline business.Credit…Ahmed Jadallah/Reuters Saudi Aramco, the national oil company of Saudi Arabia, has reached a deal to raise $12.4 billion from the sale of a 49 percent stake in a pipeline-rights company. The money will come from a consortium led by EIG Global Energy Partners, a Washington-based investor in pipelines and other energy infrastructure. Under the arrangement announced on Friday, the investor group will buy 49 percent of a new company called Aramco Oil Pipelines, which will have the rights to 25 years of payments from Aramco for transporting oil through Saudi Arabia’s pipeline networks. Aramco is under pressure from its main owner, the Saudi government, to generate cash to finance state operations as well as investments like new cities to diversify the economy away from oil. The company has pledged to pay $75 billion in annual dividends, nearly all to the government, as well as other taxes. Last year, the dividends came to well in excess of the company’s net income of $49 billion. Recently, Aramco was tapped by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s main policymaker, to lead a new domestic investment drive to build up the Saudi economy. The pipeline sale “reinforces Aramco’s role as a catalyst for attracting significant foreign investment into the Kingdom,” Aramco said in a statement. From Saudi Arabia’s perspective, the deal has the virtue of raising money up front without giving up control. Aramco will own a 51 percent majority share in the pipeline company and “retain full ownership and operational control” of the pipes the company said. Aramco said Saudi Arabia would retain control over how much oil the company produces. Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich neighbor, has struck similar oil and gas deals with outside investors.
