I looked over at Kiani, and watched her fumble with some marble in her hand with a dreamy look, murmuring something. Arnold was trying to get the pale girl to drink some blood, frustrated. The others were paying attention to them. "Fine, but don't tell anyone."

"Of course, darling. It's just you and me, right now." Yarihei's tails were flicking in excitement. For being almost a thousand years old, she sure was easy to read. What a hopeless gossip.

"My assigned name was Dangerous Sample. When I was.... liberated from my homeworld as loot for the pirates, they took the entire pod I was being grown in. I don't want to get too much into what they did to me. Or what I did to the captain, later. But I became one of them. Just like them. I needed a name that was me. That my name was silly at first didn't matter. That just meant I had to earn terror.

"I earned it. I earned it a hundred times over. Entire planets whispered my name in fear. I earned that. Why would I change it now? People respect me anyways. Some of us have ridiculous names like Clifford, and we respect that. So, what's the difference?"
