Julian Eggenhofer photography - The place where Django Reinhardt spent this final years - a serene retreat where he painted, fished, and found new inspiration for his music. Located just outside París on the banks of the Seine, Samois-sur-Seine holds a special place in the heart of everyone who loves this music.

After a six-years break, i was thrilled to revisit Samois again with my closest friend and colleague Julian Wohlmuth.

Blue or is it Bleu? Samois sur Seine to Fontainebleu

Samois sur Seine sits behind a small island in the Seine. There was just one spot for visitors, in front of a day tour ship and an 18 meter live aboard barge captained by Blue. Or is it Bleu? She’s a character, as we soon learned as she quaffed the chilled white as we sat chatting on the deck. She told us she has a PhD in astrophysics, five masters degrees and teaches French in Charlotte. Seems…

I’ve been thinking of how The Bella/Jake/Renesmee situation is very reminiscent of WB Yeats an Irish poet who proposed to Maude Gonne’s daughter Iseult after being rejected by Maude Gonne countless times. If you read about it, the likeness is literally uncanny...

Oh man I just googled it and the whole story is wild. 

I mean, get a load of this:

Maud Gonne had conceived a child, Georges, with her French Boulangist lover Lucien Millevoye. When the baby died, possibly by meningitis, Gonne was distraught, and buried him in a large memorial chapel built for him with money she had inherited. Gonne separated from Millevoye after Georges’ death, but in late 1893 she arranged to meet him at the mausoleum in Samois-sur-Seine and, next to the coffin, they had sexual intercourse. Her purpose was to conceive a baby with the same father, to whom the soul of Georges would transmigrate in metempsychosis.

And then her daughter, Iseult, was born. I mean that’s arguably weirder and more goth than how literal half-vampire Renesmee was conceived. Wild! Yeats was obsessed with Maud for years and repeatedly asked her to marry him and she always said no, even marrying someone else. He was in his fifties when he proposed to her daughter Iseult, who was in her twenties, and who also rejected him.  He had known her since she was four and people had sometimes assumed he was her father, so the whole thing was super … uh, gross. And that’s part of the reason why SM’s whole thing of “there’s nothing romantic about the imprint now” doesn’t fix the problem. It’s still weird and unhealthy that Jake and Quil are watching these girls grow up and then someday they’re all supposed to fall in love and get married and that’s not even getting into the whole Jake was in love with Bella part… It’s all such a mess, I don’t know what SM was thinking, or how she thinks it’s going to work out in the future???

One from the archives originally shot on Ektachrome 400 but looks better as a black and white image. Taken around a gypsy campfire at the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine where I had spent most of the day photographing jazz musicians and just enjoy the atmosphere of the festival. The festival has now grown to be a major event, but in those days was a fairly small village affair.
