So this might be the fic I’m most excited about. I haven’t written much, but I have a really clear picture of what’s going to happen, some specific images and the themes I want to look at, so hopefully I can actually get it done! Thanks so much for the ask!

I had a busy day at work so I had to wait to get off to actually do this! So rude. Also I went meandering in the beginning because guess who was a space kid who did model rockets and got excited writing about it lmao. I cut like two paragraphs but that was all the editing I did.

Karen grabbed at the shelf, reaching for the bright orange box. It tips enough for her to inch it forward and she snagged it quick and then dropped it into the basket hanging on her arm.

Technically they had baking soda at home, but she wanted to grab a new box, something brand-new just for this, just for Mara. Her first venture into scientific inquiry!

Which maybe wasn’t really a universally recognized milestone, but it meant a lot in Mara’s development. She seemed so much more comfortable now and no matter what she’d been interested in they’d have encouraged it, but Karen was especially excited that she’d been interested in an experiment. It had started with them talking about what Karen did and then Denny mentioning model rockets. Baking soda and vinegar was pretty rudimentary, but it was also an easy, accessible experiment.

There were a few other things they needed - actual groceries, not just materials for their rocket - so Karen happily puttered around the store grabbing them. The last thing on her list was a bag of rice and she’d just turned into the aisle when she stopped short.

There was a man standing in front of the rice, staring blankly ahead with deadened eyes and stooped shoulders. It was a tall, white man holding a five pound bag of jasmine rice in the crook of one arm like a baby. More than that, though, it was a man Karen recognized. She stepped forward. “Tommy?”

She hadn’t seen him in awhile, though she had heard from Hen that he and Buck had broken up. She didn’t know Tommy well, had only vaguely remembered him from years before when he was at the 118 and had gotten them a space-themed mobile for Denny. It had been something of a shock when Buck had dragged him into Chimney’s hospital room after the wedding, both of them soot-stained and smiling.

He turned when she said his name, and when he recognized her he gave her a tight smile.

He looked terrible.

“Karen,” he said. “Good morning.” He pointed to the rice in front of him. “Did you need… ?”

“Yeah, thank you,” she said, walking up to him. He stepped back and she kept her eye on him as she grabbed a small package of rice and put it in her basket. “Really just wanted to say hello to you, though. How are you?”

“Oh.” His smile turned warmer, though it was still insincere. “I’m fine, Karen, thanks. How are you? How are the kids, doing all right?”

Fine. It took a considerable amount of restraint not to laugh in his face. The man was far, far from fine. Karen looked him over again. There were heavy bags under his eyes, puffy and red probably from lack of sleep. He wore a too-tight Lakers t-shirt, a pair of black joggers, and flip-flops. It was rude, she knew, but she couldn’t help but stare. She didn’t think she’d ever seen his feet before. They were long and pale, with chipped black polish on the nail of his big toe.

Oh no, Karen thought. She couldn’t imagine that a break-up was particularly easy for anyone to deal with but this? She looked back up, waiting until she caught his eye. This is dire.
