Samba Family is a very funny, long running Hong Kong manhua franchise about a rather cheeky family, created and produced by HK-based manhua maker Keung Chi Kit for Co-Co, the Cantonese equivalent of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday. Dad behaves like a mix of Tarzan and Lee Falk's the Phantom, Mum's as stylish as Maureen O'Sullivan's portrayal of Jane Parker, the older son's a male equivalent of Clarissa from Clarissa Explains it All and Samba swings through trees like Tarzan's sidekick Boy himself. It's a bizarre but worthwhile read which frankly deserves some Anglophone attention as time goes by.

Your husband grunted as you handed him the aluminum pan, heavy with copious amounts of tiny hamburger sliders you made for the neighborhood party. Your husband wasn't the celebrating type, and he was confused when you handed him a shirt with an American flag printed on the front. He shook his head, refusing to even touch or wear it. It just felt wrong to be overly patriotic like that.

Your husband still wanted to "blend" into the crowd, so he opted to slick his hair back and wear a hat backward, a dark blue t-shirt with a fun graphic on the breast pocket, jean cargo shorts, and his black Sambas. From afar, he looked like a college student—in better words, he looked like the typical frat boy. You were surprised he even had clothes like that.

You held Henry's hand as you walked to your neighbor's backyard. You pushed the gate open for your husband and guided him to the table where the food was. "Now that looks good..." You took a banana pudding cup for you and your son. Your husband huffed and finally put down the heavy tray. He took off the top and tossed it into the trash. He looked around to see the other people who decided to show up, and he gulped as he saw his number one rival... the Skylar family.

"How are you and your wife? I can see that you guys got down and dirty, huh?" Lucas smirked and nudged your husband. You were about six months pregnant with another child—a girl, as you two had found out. "If you two ever get into a rut, you know where to find me."

Your husband would rather die. This wasn't the first time Lucas Skylar offered his services, and your husband was starting to form an idea in his head that Lucas just wanted to fuck you. I mean, he stares at you way too often. His green eyes would linger on your form, even if he was standing by his wife. Maybe your husband should take up the offer and start boasting about how you two had this amazing sexual chemistry.

"Yeah. Thanks." Your husband laughed humorlessly and slapped Lucas's shoulder a bit too roughly, brushing past him. The pissed-off man went straight for the beers. "You don't even have to." Your husband groaned and his shoulders tensed up. He rolled his eyes and looked right back down at you. "That prick wants to meddle into our sex life again."

"Why don't you tell him that it's great and he needs to back off?" You shrugged nonchalantly and your husband sighed.

"I... I didn't want to embarrass you like that. Plus, I don't want to create any bad blood between us and them. We still have to live near them after all." Your husbands expression soured. He crushed the empty beer can before making a shot into the trash bag. He then took your hands into his and he pulled you into his embrace.

Your husband wanted to make it up to you for pouting all day, and he took the family out to a secluded and open area. He opened the trunk of the car, and he pulled out a box of fireworks. After he was done scolding Henry for not listening to his little safety seminar, he finally lit one and took a step back. The firework shot up into the sky and burst into red and blue colors.

He subtly reached for his phone and took a picture of you and Henry both looking at the sky. Your husband would talk to thousands of guys like Lucas Skylar if this was the end result. His heart warmed at the sight of his two, and soon to be three, favorite people holding hands.

if you happen to be brazilian, she’ll do her best to research and become more familiar with the portuguese language and the brazilian culture.

if you’re haitian, she’ll love learning creole and/or french for you since she’s more familiar with french. (i have a feeling she’s had french lessons in the past/someone she knew was french so she learned it from them!)

you stare at her for a moment, trying to figure out if she’s be funny or not. “what?”

“what?” she replies

ellie is banned from the kitchen. permanently. she is not allowed anywhere NEAR that bigass pot on the stove. 

when you find her sneaking into the kitchen when she’s trying to steal a tamale, you can’t help but giggle as you try and drag her away from the stove.

“ellie i already told you twice!- you can't be in here!!” 

“YOU CANT MAKE ME!”

ellie LOVES dancing with you. whether its cumbia, salsa, bachata, or samba, ellie is IN IT! 

i think cumbias her fave (bc it’s my fav). and she’s the best at it.

whenever she’s invited to the carne asada, she’s the only one that all your cousins, your tias, and your abuela want to dance with. 

by the 9th-10th song, she’s already complaining about how she’s ready to go to sleep (and she does in your old room at your family’s house) and how she underestimated your grandma’s stamina.

what dances do you think each batkid would learn/do if they wanted to/could?

like obviously cass has ballet but i dunno i could see dick being into salsa or steph being into hiphop

Dick: I agree! With Dick's natural charisma, agility, and love for excitement, he's made for dances like the Rumba, Salsa, Cha Cha, and Samba. Those fast-paced dances practically embody the rush he thrives on. It's the quick, flashy movements combined with the playful flirtation and it matches his confident, outgoing personality.

It's soo easy to just imagine him effortlessly spinning his partner around with his signature grin lighting up the floor, and perfectly in sync with the fast-paced rhythm. It's the thrill, the connection, and the sheer rush of it all would be irresistible to him. For Dick, it’s about the freedom, the energy, and the glitz and glam.

Jason: Breakdancing. It would pay a homeage to his roots and he would love it because it's about power, strength, and has an element of danger. It has sharp, forceful movements that give the dancer a sense of empowerment. It mirrors his intensity.

Tim: Waltz and Foxtrot. Tim would really like those slow ballroom dances because for him it's about precision and discipline. Tim is the the partner because he always focuses on balance between his and Bruce's Batman and Robin partnership which would translate into him knowing just when to move and with elegance. He's similar to Dick but he has a quieter confidence.

Stephanie: Hiphop. Another homage to her roots but also hip hop is a diverse dance and Stephanie is a bit eclectic. She's fun and serious. She lifts people up but worries a lot. A dance that would suit her best is something that would incorporate many different styles. So she would learn a whole genre of dance that one particular kind. Steph would love the fast, dangerous element of hip hop and in many ways she's similar to Jason.

Damian: Contemporary (My favorite!). It's a style of dance where the dancer infuses meaning into the dance while they move. Damian's character is all about carving out his own place in the world and growing into his own person. Unlike the other, Damian isn't satisfied to be a preset which is why he broke free as Robin as such a young age. He thinks about things very deeply and his family and traditions mean a lot of him. Therefore, Damian would be interested in a form of dance that allows him to create his own self-expression. And this is Contemporary.

Cass: Ballet and Traditional Chinese Dancing. Cass liking ballet is canon. But I also strongly belief she would be interested in Traditional Chinese Dancing. She would love it because it's a way of connecting to her heritage but also, Traditional Chinese Dancing demands intense physical control and focus in the form of utter elegance. Cass, who's superpower is basically to read body movements of others and hone her own skills, would love this form of dance that allows her to gain meaning from slight changes in the body. This form of dance is created for story-telling through the body.

Duke: Jazz. Duke would love Jazz which is known for it's versatility and upbeatness. He's an optimist and a self-engineer. Meaning, Duke literally created his identity from scratch. He knew who he was and went forth on a path that would enable him to continue being that. He's good-natured and humorous. He's innovative and bold. Because of these personality, he would love Jazz which is composed of bold movements such as leaps and kicks but also love the freedom to improvise. It's all about the individuality with him.
