Wow! Three of Chicago's best cartoonists are coming to Beloit College next Monday, November 6 at 4 pm, for a reading and panel discussion moderated by the inimitable Lynda Barry!
Come see Mike Centeno, Keiler Roberts, and Sam Szabo read their wonderful comics in beautiful Pearsons Hall, while Lynda joins them in conversation. I'll be there too, worrying about the tech. Books will be available afterwards for purchase and signing.
This event is free and open to the general public! I hope to see you there!

Enlightened transexual comix updates a long line of poorly drawn semi-autobiographical stream-of-consciousness with, importantly, a new perspective (multi-dimensional trans alien allegory thing/ normal trans person from Earth rather than shitty white man) and at least as importantly, a zoomer's approach to pacing and continuity. At its best, Transexual Comix is insightful, funny, and visually interesting, asking the right questions and leaping in directions that are hard to anticipate and exciting to see. It's simultaneously sleazebag, lowbrow, and crass and capable of making a statement (admittedly, often a simple but gratifying "fuck off!") and holding an individual personality. While the humor can reach a point of crassness and irreverence that left me more perplexed or off-put than anything, it didn't do so often, and I don't expect this to be a problem for everyone. While my score reflects my own enjoyment of the comic, I think ETC is made first to be relatable and enjoyable to other Enlightened Transexuals and made for everyone else second, a quality I find admirable and exciting.
3.5/5

I typed this list up for a friend and thought I would share it some places where folks might be interested, of books by trans and nonbinary authors I have really enjoyed or found useful as educational resources in the last few years (Calvin is a trans joy focused picture book by two parents based on their child's social transition but everything else is by a trans or enby creator).
Caveats: there are not as many creators of color on this list as I would like; the market skews pretty heavily towards white authors in general and I am still working to read more trans creators of color. A common refrain when consuming media by marginalized groups is to be sure that you are also consuming media that centers joy experienced by these marginalized groups rather than suffering. This list is mix of both and of many different genres. Also, I didn't include content warnings here as I read some of these some time ago, so I recommend Googling or checking Storygraph for the titles that look interesting; some of them do focus on heavy topics like addiction or sexual assault.
All the Hometowns You Can't Stay Away From by Izzy Wasserstein
Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) and Any Other City by Hazel Jane Plante
Your Body is Not Your Body (trans body horror anthology)
A Safe Girl to Love by Casey Plett
Ponyboy by Eliot Duncan
LSBN by Emma Jayne
Enlightened Transsexual Comix by Sam Szabo
Until I Love Myself by Poppy Pesuyama
OKPsyche by Anya Johanna deNiro
The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown
Boys' Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky
At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender by Shou Arai
The Callout by Cat Fitzpatrick
Short Film Starring My Beloved's Red Bronco by K. Iver
Cheer Up! Love and Pom-Poms by Crystal Frasier
The Chromatic Fantasy by H. A.
Nimona by ND Stevenson

Hii. Do u have current or favorite zine recs?
yes!!! in general my taste skews towards pop-culture based stuff and fanzines, risographed zines, and attempts to translate the digital-ephemeral to the physical realm. some stuff i've been digging lately:
liz yerby is kinda the GOAT right now to me; sir, is this love? makes me BANANAS
caro cash is an evil genius whose work is intimidatingly brilliant and spot-on...probably the biggest Young Name in zines at the moment?
sam szabo's Enlightened Transsexual Comix (now a book from Silver Sprocket!) are so funny, insane making, and made with a lack of cis legibility that's super refreshing
queer materials has totally broken open my ideas of what zines could be; dossiers of archival material that make you feel like a kid solving a mystery
julia eff's zines were the first i ever bought, and they're really the gold standard of classic, punky, angry genderful pop culture zines
#zines#also want to clarify i mean this in SUCH a complimentary way about caro cash they're someone i rlly look up to

Formula E: Evans wins Saturday round of the Berlin double-header
Formula E: Evans wins Saturday round of the Berlin double-header By Balazs Szabo on 22 Apr 2023, 17:25 Mitch Evans came out on top of a chaotic and wild opening Berlin race to lead a Jaguar one-two in front of his teammate Sam Bird with home favourite Maximilian Guenther securing third place. F1Technical’s Balázs Szabó reports on Round 7 of the 2023 FIA Formula E Championship from the Berlin Tempelhod paddock. Although Envision Virgin’s Sebastien Buemi secured a Formula E record 16th pole position for the first round of the Berlin double-header, the Swiss driver lost the lead at the start of the race with Dan Ticktum jumping from P4 to the lead with a great getaway. Buemi followed Ticktum with Sam Bird and Stoffel Vandoorne lining up behind the Swiss racer. Maserati’s Guenther managed to improve his starting position by three places, crossing the finish line in P5 at the end of the opening lap. Surprisingly, Ticktum activated his first attack mode on Lap 3 which cost him the lead as Bird managed to jump to the front of the field. The next laps saw Bird, Guenther and Buemi use their first attack mode as well. Former champion Lucas di Grassi used both his attack modes within the opening four laps of the race. Ticktum, Buemi and Bird mimicked the Brazilian driver by going though the attack zone for the second time on Lap 5 and 6 respectively. The unusual use of attack modes was down to the fact that the Berlin race was expected to be tight on energy, forcing drivers to use their power boost whiel they could. On Lap 10, Sergio Sette Camara ran into the back of Guenther’s Maserati while Rene Rast crashed into the the back of the Brazilian’s car just moments later. Although the race direction first hesitated, Scott Elkins decided to send the safety car out on the 2.4km track on the next lap. When the Bruno Correia-driver Porsche Taycan left the track, it was Jake Dennis who led the field in front of Edoardo Mortara with Buemi, Vandoorne, Evans and Bird following the leading duo. The next laps saw several overtaking moves with drivers following each other extremely closely. On Lap 20, the safety car was deployed for the second time Vandoorne and Ticktum collided on the exit of Turn 3, with their damaged cars left stranded on the circuit. The action was resumed three laps later with Evans leading Buemi, Guenther, Mortara, Bird, Dennis, Pascal Wehrlein, Felix da Costa and Nico Mueller. The next laps saw a spectacular fight for the lead between Evans, Buemi and Bird. On Lap 31, Dennis outbraked himself, losing the rear of his his car before finding the wall in contact. Da Costa was caught up by the stray Andretti with the Portuguese losing the front wing of his car picking up severe damage that forced him to retire despite his impressive late-race pace. The FIA race direction decided to extend the 40-lap race by three laps due to the safety car interruptions. On Lap 40, Evans closed in on Buemi and managed to overtake his Swiss rival. Buemi was unable to fight back with the Kiwi building up a small gap for the dying minutes of the race. His teammate Bird also closed in on the now second-placed Buemi, but he seemed to wait for the right moment to launch a real attack on the former Formula E champion. On the last lap, Bird overtook Buemi for second at Turn 6. While the pair fought for P2, Guenther closed in on them as well, and managed to pass Buemi just before they crossed the finish line. via F1Technical.net .

A few months ago, my friend Samara asked me to make a comic for her Passover seder. The seder usually includes a retelling of the story of exodus, so I offered to draw an comic to be included in the haggadah (hebrew for “zine”). Then I got distracted on a few other projects and totally burned the deadline, and by the time I had it all drawn and scanned Passover was long gone. Sorry I let you down, Samara. It’s gonna have to wait till next year, but in the meantime I’m going to send it out to some Jewish pals and I might as well post it here as well. I like how it turned out. I did my best to keep it wholesome, which is actually pretty difficult to do when you’re adapting the Old Testament. This is part one of two.
