Shoulder Jug

Salt-glaze pottery is typically stoneware featuring a glossy, translucent glaze with a slightly orange-peel texture. This effect is achieved by throwing common salt into the kiln during the high-temperature phase of firing.

These shoulder jugs were specifically designed to allow a matching butter crock to sit upside down on top of them for convenient storage.

Measures 11" tall by 7" wide

This antique stoneware bottle is “salt glazed.” Salt glazing was a glazing technique that was popular in Europe and North America from the 17th to 19th centuries until it fell out of widespread use by the 20th century due both to the increased use of glassware and the introduction of new glazing techniques. - The bottle is carved with an Elk’s head artwork created by Celtic Hammer Club. - The bottle is approximately the diameter of a modern wine bottle, but it is taller. The glass finish results from the thermochemical reaction of silicates in the clay body with the sodium in the salt.   Lore has it that salt-glazing first started in the Rhine Basin where wood-fired kilns were packed with drift wood and wood from old barrels once used to store brine preserved food. Upon firing at very high temperatures the silica from the salt-infused wood created a sodium vapour that acted as a flux on the siliceous stoneware clay, effectively glazing the surface of the pots with sodium silicate, a type of liquid-glass. This ovoid, salt glazed, 2 gallon stoneware crock is from Somerset, Massachusetts. This is the mark of Leonard and Benjamin G. Chace and is one of the marks of the long line of Chace potters in Somerset, Massachusetts from 1847-1882. This has to be among their earliest pieces as the person stamping the letters and punctuation seems like a novice. Also, the form and the early lug handles are similar to stoneware from the 1820s-1830s.
