The literal weight of their world on top of them

I am in a cloud

Atop Cadillac

And except for a few stragglers holding

Desperately onto

Their late-fall summer trips,

I am alone

I feel I am on top of the world,

But not in a majestic sense

I am at the highest point

(Locally, at least)

And because the thick fog surrounds the summit today

(There was no hike, this is a drivable summit)

It feels like the weight of my world,

My stratosphere,

Is upon me.

I will move about,

Blind,

Within it

I shouldn’t be here,

Not just because there is

Zero visibility

Or the threat (and feels to be the promise)

Of high, gale-force winds,

But because

I am not free here,

Of here,

I am stranger,

Thought I visit

All the time.

My daughter,

Not born here,

Is a native.

Not her first steps

Happened here,

But her first kiss

Most certainly did,

So did her first heartache

And countless little moments

Of joys and laughs and tears and scrapes

And the majority of those

I missed because

I am not from here.

Instead

When I come

I feel the weight of their world on me

Much like the scallops and small steamers,

The omniscient lobster

(Which touches all in lore and economy)

They are here

On the opposite spectrum

At the bottom of the North Atlantic

On a perfectly plateaued shelf

The earth cut free for them,

Among trenches and receding glaciers

Over a million eons ago,

It is their prairie

Where they run free

And move about in abundance

They, like me here,

Eventually find the traps,

Filled with luscious bait and temptations

That eventually pull them up

From their swirls of families

To their doom.

They might mate here and proliferate,

They might find the most suitable prey,

The most prodigious terrain

And the most perfect mineral content and temperature to become their best selves

(For which Maine lobster are renowned)

And from their murky near constant 48 degree saltbath,

That water is the only pressure felt towards them,

Yet granted, it is singular,

But all-encompassing, their sea,

The absolute matter that they not so much live in,

but underneath of,

The literal weight of their world on top of them,

So it is their normal.

I feel a kinship with them,

For when I visit,

Even on this highest peak,

Lost in a fight of Cumulonimbus,

I forever am a visitor to

Where the sun first shines

And I, like them,

Are truly not FROM here,

But eventually,

Will be discovered,

And trapped

And eaten

As well.

Also I was forced to wash my hair twice after the sauna due to their saltbath and chlorine in the Pools, which completelt stripped my hair of any moisture. It felt weird looking at it shampood. It actually felt fairly unnatural and really dry so I am now treating it with an egg and coconut oil mask. Have to make sure I rinse it really well though, otherwise my hair Will smell 🥲 put a facemask on as well while I'm at it, but realised they put loads of crap in it so I might decide to make my own in the future. I didn't think I would ever get a hyperfixation on using natural products and not washing my hair the traditional way, but here we are.
