★ Prabhudheva: Even I am cool, but Salman Khan sir is cooler!
Dec 9, 2019
Tumblr media
Prabhudheva on his equation with the actor, with whom he has signed a third fi lm even before release of new Dabangg The successful duo of Salman Khan and Prabhudheva, who had earlier collaborated onWanted, which resurrected the former’s career after a dry spell, are back for the second time to carry forward one of Bollywood’s most successful franchises, Dabangg. With less than two weeks to go before the third instalment unfolds, the 46-year-old director admits he is nervous. After 25 years in showbiz? “Yeah, the only thing that has changed in all these years is that from the outside, I look composed, but inside it’s still the same,” he laughs. What changes has he noted in Salman since they first worked together? “There are changes in him as an actor; he knows everything about the film and not just story and screenplay. But personally, he is still the same,” Prabhu shares. And has the equation between them changed? “There is huge respect for each other,” he says, adding that their contrasting personalities make their combination work. Talking about Dabangg, the story and the characters come with certain preconceived notions and attitude. How did his distinctive style gel with what was on the template? “I don’t know how, but it mixed well and is visible on screen. I believe that the story and screenplay lead the director, and except for tweaking my style slightly to accommodate Chulbul Pandey’s antics, I didn’t have to adjust much,” Prabhu smiles, pointing out that the actor, who has been enacting this character for nine years now, knows him way better and also how to play him the best. There have been speculations around Sonakshi Sinha’s Rajjo, with many believing that this time around, she will be seen as a mother with a young son. On this, Prabhu is reticent, saying it is something for which audience will have to watch the film. But he confirms that Sona is playing a “young mother”. He is all praise for the film’s second leading lady, Saiee Manjrekar. “She is a new girl. So, she was curious about whatever we did. When we tied her or put glycerine in her eyes, Siaee wanted to know why we were doing so and what had happened to justify it on screen. It’s a normal reaction, and given the innocence of her face, she didn’t have to act much. Her face is her asset; plus, she is a hard worker and a born star like so many others of her generation,” he applauds, pointing out that youngsters today are so brilliant that you just need to guide them a bit and they will pave their own way. “By the second or the third film, they will be teaching us.” Dabangg is known for its chartbusters and hook steps. Prabhudheva, too, is known for his moves. How did the idea of taking the belt off, followed by the hip-swing (for “Munna Badnaam Hua”), come about? “The bulb in my head just went on,” he grins. “Salman comes up with different ideas, too. He showed me the move from “Hud Hud Dabangg” and I was like, ‘what is happening,’ because I couldn’t see anything moving... till he asked me to look down at the hips,” he guffaws. Prabhu is involved in “Munna Badnaam Hua” not just as a director and choreographer, but he also features in it. After dancing with Madhuri Dixit and Sonakshi, how was it matching steps with Salman again? “As a choreographer, I have worked with all kinds of dancers. Each of them has their own style and that’s why we like them. I enjoyed working with Salman, I didn’t face any difficulty,” he avers. Salman is known to have temper issues with directors. Recently, Inshaallah with Sanjay Leela Bhansali ground to a halt before it could take off. Meanwhile, Prabhu has worked with him in Wanted and Dabangg 3 and the duo has already kicked off a third film, Radhe. So far, it has been smooth sailing for them. What’s the secret? “It doesn’t happen with anyone,” Prabhu shrugs off the question, going on to rave about Salman’s big heart and how he can get reputed people on board his projects and at the same time help those not doing so well, hiring struggling actors for certain roles because they need work.
“I find it easy to work with sir because he listens to you when you tell him something isn’t going right and should be done differently. Even if the shoot runs late into the night, he doesn’t fuss about it. He is super cool. Even I am cool, but he is way cooler.”
He goes on to share an incident from the shoot of the Dabangg 3 climax. “It was a big and expensive set depicting a stone quarry. Sudeep (antagonist) had injured himself during a fight scene and was in pain. Everyone was worried because of the expenses, but in two seconds sir decided to cancel the shoot that day, saying the health and comfort of his team comes before anything else,” he marvels. The buzz in the industry today is that Salman likes Prabhudheva best, as he offered him Radhe while they were still working on Dabangg 3. It’s rare for him to start another film with the same director while still working on one. “His trust in me is unimaginable. I don’t need to say anything, he has proved it. Everybody knows now, and it makes me feel all the more responsible because with every step, I have to prove his trust right,” the filmmaker says earnestly. Prabhu is known to complete his films in three months and Salman is running on a tight schedule with Radhe, which he has announced as an Eid 2020 release. Could that be one of the reasons why the actor went with him? “Maybe,” Prabhu says. Radhe was being hyped as a sequel to Wanted, but later, it was clarified that the project is an official remake of the Korean film The Outlaws. However, Boney Kapoor has always said Wanted 2 will happen. Quiz Prabhu on the matter and he says, “Wanted is Salman and Boney sir’s project. Only they can decide when it will happen.” Apart from Radhe, the actorchoreographer-filmmaker has Street Dancer 3D, which is gearing up for a Republic Day 2020 release, as a cast member. Prod him on his part and he confides with an embarrassed laugh that even he doesn’t know the story. “When Remo (D’souza, director) calls next, I’ll have to ask him now,” he chuckles. The dance film features a recreation of his iconic song “Muqabala”. What was his reaction to it? “I can’t compete with (the ’90s) Prabhudheva,” he guffaws. “That is exactly what I told the makers when they asked me to perform on the new version.”

Moview Review: ‘Dabangg3’
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
After a series of flops and disasters, salman khan rose back to superstardom from 2010's blockbuster Dabangg. After that in 2012 he proved that he has a huge blind fanbase when a crap named Dabangg 2 earned more than 150 crores. And now in 2019 he is back once again to prove that indian audience still doesn't care about anything when Salman khan is present on screen.
So this weekend we watched Dabangg 3, please read our complete review to know how it is. Like its previous installments Dabangg 3 too opens with a group of thugs looting people and Salman khan coming to get them all alone. Ten minutes into the movie and we get to see a lot of slow-mo action sequences and some unnecessary, excessive cheap humor.
And then again in a long unnecessary scene we are introduced to his family that has his wife Rajjo(Sonakshi Sinha), his brother makkhi(Arbaaz Khan) and his father (this time played by Vinod's brother Pramod Khanna) and his son bittu.
Makkhi is now also a police inspector and along with his brother he rescues a group of girl from being "smuggled". And this smuggling chain leads Chulbul pandey to Bali singh played by kiccha sudeep.
After this we get to see one of the most vague flashback story of bollywood. Where dhakad pandey i.e Salman khan in his 20s, is in love with khushi played by Sai Manjrekar. They are about to get married but somehow bali gets a "glimpse" of khushi and decides to marry her.
When Bali comes to know about dhakad and khushi's relationship he kills her along with her family. And to revenge khushi's death dhakad pandey joins police force. And thus Chulbul pandey the robinhood cop is born. With Bali's entry the script becomes unilateral and the war begins with betrayal, action, dialogue baazi etc. But to see how it ends you will have to watch the movie.
Talking about the screenplay, the film has many loopholes. The story written by Salman khan himself is a redemption of 80s revenge drama and is too filmy at many points.
After the horrible Action-Jackson this is the dullest movie from Prabhu deva. With his name as director one can expect some good humor like Wanted, rowdy rathore or singh is bling. But this time maybe someone else had the command while he was just wearing the director's cap. The biggest letdown for this movie is its music, irrelevant, unnecessary song at every 20 minutes irritates you to the core. Except Munna badnam hua you won't even remember a single of them.
Dabangg's innovative ackground music was the soul of the movie, this time Sajid-Wajid tried to do some experiments with it and they fail badly. Background score is too forced and loud. However in one of the fighting sequence the addition of word "Badass" on salman's entry is just superb, maybe one of the card got into the right place.
Despite all this criticism you can't blame Salman khan this time, because he is the only good thing about the film. He tries comedy, struggles in emotional scenes but nails every action sequence. Sai manjerekar was good in her part, as a debutant she passed the test with distinction.
Kiccha sudeep, most of us know him as the antagonist of south's blockbuster Eega. But it's painful to see him struggling on the screen with hindi dialogues, his character is poorly developed and that's the main reason he doesn't look what the director is trying to show.Filmi Files is the best place to look for movie reviews online.
Sonakshi sinha is going downwards with every installment of the franchise. Every time she speaks you know that it is something unimportant. Arbaaz khan is here because he is the producer of the movie, his character was supposed to be the comic relief in movie but like makkhi arbaaz khan fails at his job too. All said and done, Dabangg 3 is strictly for salman khan fans. If you're looking for good entertainment then you'll have to wait for some more days until something better comes.

★ Why Salman Khan's Dabangg 3 is for fans, not critics!
December 18, 2019
Tumblr media
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan chats with City Times about what fans can expect from his latest film, how he handles criticism and why he enjoys such a mass appeal
For years, his success has defied all odds. Naysayers may question it, but if you happen to be a die-hard Salman Khan fan (is there any other type?), you need no validation. That's the aura of Salman Khan.
When we met the Bollywood superstar in November for his Dabangg: The Tour Reloaded show in Dubai, the actor told us something that probably explains his widespread success in an industry which is fickle when it comes to placing actors on a pedestal.
"We can make the best movies ever but if they (fans) may not like it, then there's no point - it is a bad movie at that point. No matter what the critics say, if you make a bad film, and fans like it then it is the best film ever!" he explained.
That sentiment, is key to understanding the phenomenon called Salman Khan. Having debuted as lead in Sooraj Barjatya's romantic family drama Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989, Khan may have taken time to find his comfort zone in blockbuster action films, but once he found it, he has stayed put. He is not known to experiment much with genres or try his hand at roles, outside his comfort zone. "I'm not looking for awards," he told us, "only rewards, when fans leave the theatre fulfilled."
Over the years, it has only been proved over and over again, that where Salman Khan puts his money, that is where the money flows. Be it Ready, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Sultan, Bajrangi Baijhan or his last release Bharat, there is a certain formula that Khan is adept at handling and averse to straying from.
When it comes to a Salman Khan movie, fans don't go to the cinema to watch a character, but rather to gawk at the superstar shining through his on-screen persona.
Back with a bang
The Dabangg movies have minted money for the makers ever since the first one was released in 2010 and introduced us to the swashbuckling, quirky Inspector Chulbul Pandey. Two years later, Khan was back with Dabangg 2, which made more noise at the box office. Seven years and umpteen movies later, the hit-making machine is back with Dabangg 3, with his ever supportive leading lady Sonakshi Sinha, and the added attraction of debutant Saiee Manjrekar (filmmaker/actor Mahesh Majrekar's daughter).
Now Khan, of course, has a reputation for introducing the maximum number of new faces to the industry - be it his Dabangg lead star Sonakshi Sinha, Daisy Shah, Zareen Khan or Sneha Ullal among many others.
The actor admitted to us that it is "very scary" to launch new faces. He confessed that there is the pressure of ensuring "so many new faces should be known faces and recognised and have the longest career..."
But at the same time he stated confidently that, "I have no fear where Saiee (Manjrekar) is concerned or Sonakshi from her first movie to now." "And we are there all the time. For all the people we have launched. in some form or the other...
"We'd never leave the people who we have introduced. Like the way Sooraj Barjatya's has never left me," he continued. Keeping it fresh
Just like its predecessors, Dabangg 3 has all the ingredients for a typical masala movie - item number, catchy dialogues, a Southern Nemesis in the form of Kichcha Sudeep and of course, Salman Khan. Does Khan ever get bored of doing the same old thing again? Not if you go by his career track. During the concert when we asked him how he keeps his energy levels constantly high, his response was insightful and probably applicable to his approach to movies in a career spanning over 30 odd years. "When your hobby turns into your profession, you have all the enthusiasm for it."
Excerpts from a conversation with Salman Khan over the phone ahead of the release of Dabangg 3 in UAE theatres on Thursday, December 19.
Why did you feel the need to come out with Dabangg 3? Was it the success of the franchise, the demand from your fans or did you just get attached to Chulbul Pandey?
When both the films have done so well, why would I not make a sequel? (laughs) Both films had done well and there was a huge demand by the time with people asking; 'When is Dabangg coming?' 'When is Dabangg coming?' We already had the script in mind like how we made Dabangg. But I was stuck with Tiger Zinda Hai and Bharat and some other films which released, so I couldn't give Dabangg time earlier. As soon as I got a window I did Dabangg 3. Dabangg 3 seems to be a masala entertainer much like the first two movies. What is this one's USP though?
It is a lot bigger, a lot larger. Chulbul is more mature, he is more dignified . he is full of quirks, sharing all the right things; he's just a lot larger than what he used to be.
And it is not just a masala movie - its got more hues, it is about good and bad, about nobility, about family values; what's the situation in some people's lives. It deals with dowry, it deals with positivity against negativity...
It deals with a lot of these things - kidnapping, prostitution... The first movie had (handled the theme of) polio; the second one had LIC Policy... You have a unique dancing style. And you make your 'Item Boy' debut with Munna Badnam Hua in this film. Do you enjoy dancing?
(Pause) Yeah, at times, especially when you are getting praised for it and you are getting appreciated for it, I love it!
You enjoy enormous mass appeal, and you can do no wrong in the eyes of your fans. To what do you attribute this appeal?
I attribute this to the eyes of my fans. And then to me! Because they see it that he (Salman) is not doing any wrong. How do you respond to critics? Do you read reviews once your films come out?
Critics? I don't react to them at all. They write good or bad, I don't react. I have just done my hard work, that too, to the best of my ability. If they appreciate it, great. And if they think it is not up to the mark, that's fine. As long as my fans go watch the films, people go enjoy the films, and like it and the numbers are good, I'm fine. My critic is the box office. If my fans don't want to go see my film, then they are my critics. I'm making these movies for them (fans) not for these critics. What can audience expect from newbie Saiee Manjrekar who is making her Bollywood debut with Dabangg 3?
The audience can expect a very big star from her. The industry will have a new A-grade, very talented leading lady. What about Sonakshi Sinha? How do you rate her considering you have acted together in all the Dabangg movies?
When we first saw her for Dabangg she was very talented even then. She has grown ten fold (since then). What kind of actor are you on sets? Are you a director's actor or do you like to improvise?
I improvise but depending on the director. I will not change anything just for the heck of changing it. Like if I feel a fight scene could go wrong, then I would give an alternative to that scene. How do you plan to celebrate the success of Dabangg 3?
I'm just going to spend time at home. There is a newborn (probably referencing sister Arpita's new baby) coming to the house... And I'd thank God.

★ Stories Sudeep on playing the villain in Dabangg 3: It’s nice to be bad when Salman Khan is around!
Oct 08, 2019
Kannada superstar Sudeep makes a fiery return to Hindi cinema with Dabangg 3. Glowering in a trim suit, the actor stands against a flaming village in his first-look from the film. Sudeep plays ‘Balli’, the intriguing new supervillain to go up against Salman Khan in the blockbuster franchise.
“I have never been this evil on screen,” Sudeep admits, “My character is an out-and-out baddie. Without the antagonist being huger than Chulbul Pandey, the film won’t happen. My only responsibility on Dabangg 3 was to look bigger than Salman, which is difficult.”
Sudeep was approached for the role by Sohail Khan, who pitched the idea over a video call from USA. Prabhudheva, who has directed the new instalment, was reluctant to speak over video, so they flew over to Mysore to narrate the script to Sudeep. “By then I had already made up my mind,” Sudeep says, “I wanted to work with Salman. There are several fight scenes between us in the film. It’s nice to be bad when he is around. You just make him look better and feel good about it. Not everybody is worth becoming bad for.”
While remaining tight-lipped about his arc, Sudeep promises big blows with his turn as Balli. “There’s a moment you’ll see Chulbul Pandey go silent in front of me.” Likewise, the film’s action design has been beefed up enormously, assures Sudeep. “We shot the climax itself for 20 days. They put a huge set in Dahisar, Mumbai. It’s a brutal, hard-hitting fight, mainly hand-to-hand combat. Salman and I had to punch and hit each other. Sometimes, when you really respect your co-star, you can’t do certain things. But Salman gave me that space to go all out. Also, he had more energy on set than any of us.”
Sudeep’s last Hindi appearance was in Rakta Charitra 2, released in 2010. What kept him away all these years? “I didn’t feel welcomed at the time,” he says. “Not only that — I didn’t get good projects. But I am okay with that.” He adds that while director Ram Gopal Varma and actor Riteish Deshmukh — with whom he co-starred in Rann — made him “very comfortable,” there were others he couldn’t really click with. “I felt it was time for me to go back to Kannada. I was happy with the work I did in Hindi and I went back. That was it.”
Sudeep’s recent films — Pailwaan (Kannada) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (Telugu) — were released in multiple regional languages. Dabangg 3, which is set to arrive on December 21, will be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. The actor welcomes the rise of this pan-Indian film culture, but stresses on the need for proper cultural translation between industries. “You can’t just label everything as Indian cinema. Mentalities still differ between the north and the south. So we need to keep these nuances in mind and make small edits before crossing over. For instance, South Indian comedies are a little louder, which don’t work in Bollywood.”
Although positioned as enemies in Dabangg 3, Sudeep and Salman have a lot in common. Both are mainstream superstars with an unabashed love for commercial cinema. Both have a moniker — ‘Kichcha’ for Sudeep, ‘Bhai’ or ‘Bhaijaan’ for Salman. Most strikingly, both are long-time Bigg Boss hosts, engaging fans with their distinctive iterations of the show on the small screen. Sudeep, who hosts Bigg Boss Kannada, says he has never seen Salman’s version. “I have never watched anyone else’s Bigg Boss. I don’t like to get carried away. But I remember meeting Salman for the first two seasons in Lonavla (where the Hindi Bigg Bosshouse is located). We had separate set-ups, but he was always warm to me. He would call me over during breaks for a game of cricket. He calls it ‘cardio’.”
Dabangg 3 is produced by Salman Khan Films and Arbaaz Khan Productions. The film is a part-prequel and will explore the origin story of Chulbul Pandey.

★ Interview: Actor Sudeep on playing a villain in Dabangg 3 and being secure in his own kingdom!
27th September 2019
A RUTHLESS VILLAIN IS crucial to a Bollywood project. It is his defeat that cements the position of a hero. And, if the hero is a larger-than-life figure like Salman Khan, who is much celebrated across the country as Bhai, choosing a villain becomes even more difficult. It is perhaps why the makers picked up Kannada actor Sudeep to do justice to this role in Dabangg 3, the third instalment of Dabangg franchise.
“I had to look bigger than him, and that was the biggest responsibility. Otherwise, it will look like he is hitting a child. He (Salman’s character) has to defeat a man who looks bigger and stronger than him, that’s when the hero will stand out. And, I think that was a challenge for me. It was difficult keeping in mind Salman sir’s aura and image but I guess we worked it out eventually and have done a good job,” says Sudeep, while honestly admitting that he is not fond of playing the role of a villain and wouldn’t have done this project had it not been Salman Khan.
When asked why and if he finds it difficult to be a villain, especially when he is celebrated for being a hero, so much so that he is called ‘Kiccha’ after the role of a politician he played in a 2003 film of the same title, he answers it blatantly. “It is difficult when you carry baggage. Like, if I carry who I am in the South then it will be very difficult. You have to be little uncorrupted.
Either don’t accept a film or be submissive to it entirely. I accepted it only because it is Salman Sir’s film. I don’t think I will accept such roles again — of being a total baddie. If you take Makkhi (Naan Ee, Eega, 2012), I was playing an antagonist but I was not a villain altogether, I was the lead, maybe in a negative role but nobody is hitting or kicking me. But, not every film is worth of you being a baddie, what should I do it for? On the same dates, I can do another film in Kannada.”
At the end of the film, there is an intense sequence which will see Sudeep and Salman fighting each other bare chested. When Sudeep was asked, he admitted not being confident of doing a shirtless scene since he wasn’t in shape.
“I have lost a lot of weight... from 89 kgs, I have come down to 74kgs. I wasn’t fat but I was shapeless. Luckily I was doing Pehalwaan (Pailwaan in Kannada), which placed me in a better place and gave me confidence to do certain things in this film. I had to a little bit of more workout but if I had not done Pehalwaan, it would have been a little difficult to do the shirtless scene with Salman,” he admits.
When asked if there was any particular fitness regimen that he followed, the actor said that he did all sort of workouts that are done in a gym like functional training, cardio, weight training and focused on areas like abs, chest and shoulders. “Diet is also very important. Eat less and eat on time. And, spend time on your health,” he adds.
For the sequence, they had a 22-day-long shooting schedule and it was reported that there was a particular kicking shot that he found challenging. When quizzed about the same, the actor said, “Kicking him wasn’t the problem, those things are a must in a fighting sequence but it was kicking him in the chest. I did it once or twice but they wanted more pressure so that was getting a bit difficult. Apart from that, everything was fine. The climax fighting scene was killing.”
Sudeep has also dubbed for his character in Dabangg 3. When asked how comfortable is he with the language, he said, “Hindi is not my language but aisa nahi hai ki baat nahi kar sakta (it is not like I can’t talk in Hindi). I have a beautiful way of dubbing and I manage that very well.”
This is not the first time that Sudeep is doing a Bollywood film. In the past, he has worked with Ram Gopal Varma in his films like Phoonk, Rann, Phoonk 2 and Rakta Charitra. When asked if this is his Bollywood stint 2.0, the actor said, “There is no ‘coming again’ happening here. I am happy doing what I am doing there (Kannada film industry). Whenever something nice comes and if it is worth it, it will happen but you really can’t plan it. By the end of the day, we are all doing films and we are all recognised for what we do in the South).”Upon being asked if there is any role that he wishes to do or any director that he wishes to work with, he concluded by saying, “I wish whatever comes my way, I do well. I don’t crave for something that is not mine. No character is beautiful on the script level, it is only the actor who makes it looks nice. If the same character goes to someone else, he may or may not do it better. And, the same is for a director. If something comes to me, I should do it well and that’s the challenge.” WHAT BROUGHT HIM TO BOLLYWOOD “What attracts me today is humanity. Right now, if I see someone who perhaps is not that big but is very humane and genuine, it will attract me more than stardom. We all have our unseen baggage, it will come out only if you poke it. If somebody acts like a huge star, trust me I have my baggage too. My kingdom might be small but it is a kingdom nevertheless, right? You leave all of that behind because of the genuineness that Salman sir shows... he is one of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema. And, he is so grounded and attached to everybody.”
ON WORKING WITH PRABHUDEVA “I worked with him for the first time but he is such a nice human, he makes life very easy for everyone. He knows what he wants and doesn’t hesitate from going to anyone, including Salman sir and ask him for one more shot. He is not shooting to impress anyone. He is very quick and I am lucky that I get to work with such lovely people.”
PAILWAAN’S RECEPTION “The response has been brilliant but the business should have been better. It is not a bad film, there is a certain number that it has done but what I feel is that it could have done better. I need to understand where it stands.

★ “Salman Khan is the ROCKY and RAMBO of Bollywood” – Ali Abbas Zafar !
Faridoon Shahryar | Nov 8, 2017
The promo of Tiger Zinda Hai is getting an insane response. Writer Director Ali Abbas Zafar in a worldwide exclusive with Bollywood Hungama‘s Faridoon Shahryar opens up in detail about his film that has displayed an international class. Ali speaks about Salman Khan‘s star power, the hard working Katrina Kaif, the exotic locations that blazed with heat, the music of the film and how he convinced Girish Karnad sahab to act in the film.
The promo of Tiger Zinda Hai is far bigger than what the posters promised. And if this is the trailer toh film kya hone wali hai. Is it a conscious decision to take a film like this to many notches higher than Sultan?
Well I didn’t feel that was the reason I made Tiger Zinda Hai. I always feel that the scale of the film comes from the story. The most important part of Tiger Zinda Hai is that even before it became a sequel, first I wrote the story and I had no idea it will go and become Tiger Zinda Hai. I just wrote a story and it was inspired by real events and it happened in 2014. There was so much press coverage of it and there were so many political meetings about it. And I thought that those nurses getting kidnapped and captured was a very interesting chapter. It was a completely individual story than a Tiger Zinda Hai sequel. I shared the story with Aditya Chopra while we were shooting Sultan and he said what are you doing after this and I said I don’t know. So he said koi kahani hai? And I kind of shared the story with him. He said the story is very good. And when Sultan released he said ab kya karna hai? So I told him the same story as a Tiger sequel, and he started smiling and he said that’s a smart one. I think both Katrina and Salman came on board because they felt that the story was worth telling in a genre that I want to tell. It’s an action drama, it’s a spy espionage but what triggers the entire genre is the story. That is what brings scale to the film. When I wrote the entire script and took it to Adi, first thing he did was take a breath and said that we have to mount it like an international film. He told me you can’t make it look like a substandard film, get the crew from entire world, find the best crew to execute it. So when you see the trailer and the film you’ll see that we put detailed attention to how that country looks. A country that is in the middle of a war, as the film is triggered by a real story we kept the tone of the film very real. Salman’s Tiger character and Katrina Kaif’s character will give you the flamboyance of a hero and a heroine but they are still contained. They are not like Superhero and Wonder woman, they are real and emotional.  There is a reason why they are on that mission, their internal chemistry and what’s going on between the two of them. Characters from the first part are there, then there are new characters, the cast is from all around the world, Iran Abu Dabi, Dubai, UK, America. It’s an ensemble cast.
A film becomes a talking point because of its topic. This film is not only about guns blazing and high octane action. You are having references to ISIS, turmoil of middle-east, trailer starts of from Iraq for that matter. You mention Pakistani agent and Katrina Kaif comes into the picture. You are talking about brotherhood across the world. How crucial was it to tie all the ends together?
I think as a story teller and a film maker, one needs to have clarity on why you are making a film! There’s a line in the film which sums up the plot which is “Aaj dunia ko ek hee cheez ki zarurat hai, aur woh hai insaaniyat”. Whenever there will be a fight between right and wrong, humanity will be at stake. Where are we taking this world to? That is the general broadline stroke of the film. We talk about emotions at a very human level. We are not talking about the political side of it. As soon as the things become political people start taking sides. What we are taking sides is that there is a story about these girls, they get kidnapped and as a human what would be my duty to get those people out of there or not. And obviously as a trained agent there is a respect to the country and duty is bigger than everything. Patriotism is important for the country. It’s a mix of a lot of emotions and at the same time the key story is about this rescue mission where these agents are going to go and get you out of there.
Salman Khan did Tubelight. It also spoke about humanity but the film didn’t do well at the Box Office. How crucial is it for Salman Khan after Tubelight to make a big comeback in terms of Box-Office?
Well obviously I have a lot of pressure on Tiger Zinda Hai. It’s a sequel of a very successful film. It has Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in it. They are both very big stars plus I did Sultan with him which made a lot of money at the box-office. So there is a lot of pressure, but hit or flop is a part of our game. No one knows what’s going to work at the box office till the time it really comes out. As film makers we can only believe in stories which we want to see and there is a certain way of presenting those stories. I never went to film school, most of my schooling happened at the cinema where I went to theatres watching films in Dehradun. I always believed that every star that I saw in the theatre had certain strengths like Salman had certain strength, Aamir Khan had a certain strength, Mr. Bachchan had some strength and SRK’s strength is different. I like celebrating Salman as Salman and I am very honest about it. One of my favourite films while growing up was Karan Arjun; he was brilliant in that film. The way he has done Tere Naam, I was in college when it came out. Tiger, Wanted and even Dabangg for that matter. Sultan was an ode to his stardom. What I feel is that if you humanize Salman Khan, his impact is more at the box-office and even his reach. So even when his fans find out that he has a heart and even he gets hit, but when he rises it will be the biggest comeback. So we have to create stories around him where you find that the character resonates Salman Khan’s persona. There is no one who can carry a name like tiger better than Salman Khan. He is very charismatic. Like I always say if there is one guy who is Rocky and Rambo in the industry that’s Salman Khan.  There is no other actor who can look like Rambo other than Salman Khan. He has his own charisma, style and swag. When he is little self-brooding you know, he speaks less but when he speaks it’s nice because he has lovely voice. There is different charisma of the way he speaks his line and that’s what people love about him. I like him like that and I always say that if I am doing a film with Salman Khan, I have to have moments like these. If I am not an audience of my own film, I don’t know how many people would be an audience of my film. My understanding of him as an actor is that you know I will write a scene and every morning I will go to his van and I will tell him to see and he will tell me 2 or 3 things and we will discuss and then we will find this ground where there is a great balance between the character and Salman Khan. He doesn’t work on the rhythm of what I write and I think that’s where both of us have now found the space where I know I have to respect the stardom that he holds and that this is character that his stardom has to fit into. That up till now is working like magic with him.
One other notable part of the film is the look. Colour tone is prominent and it’s a dessert colour look. Was that a conscious decision?
Ya the thing is that, when we make films that are set in certain set ups, for example a war country, we need to do enough research to portray how those countries look on camera. We were fortunate enough that we wanted to capture summer of Iraq. We shot most of our film in Morocco and a huge part in Abu Dhabi where we recreated the set. Luckily we were there in the peak of Summer. So half of the tone that you see on camera is the natural tone which was captured while shooting. So I did not have to do much in post to get that tone.  Lot of times there is sweat on actors’ face that is real sweat because the temperatures were 50 degree Celsius. There are certain films which require budget for projection; Tiger Zinda Hai is amongst those films where budget has gone to make a film look a certain way. We have recreated a water on city in Abu Dabi. 3000 people were working day and night to create that set. It was the biggest set that we put outside India. There was no way we could go to Iraq. The research happened through people who I know who stay there. But majorly it was how we recreate it, how we set design it, how we costume design it and how we shoot it. Most of my crew was international and specially people who have worked in those terrains. My production designers, my costume designers everyone. My action designers are from LA. All started from the script, all read the script and the kind of the stand that the script took towards the end of the film all thought it is the kind of film they all want to be a part of. The energy just changes when you know that you are doing something worth telling.
Background score is playing an important part. It’s almost a character in the film. How many songs?
Obviously in an espionage drama theme is the most important thing and I think Ek Tha Tiger had a very strong background score. Julius and I are very close, he has done work in all my films and when we came to this one I thought we need to do a rendition of a theme. People are liking the background score because we did a very bizarre thing. We mixed the whole brass section which is like this old school James Bond style with a very electro riff. It’s an amalgamation of two schools which kind of sits on the bed of those backgrounds. It has this old school brass section which is playing the riff and it changes to new EDM distorted rough mix which kind of complements Iraq. It took a lot of time. Vishal Shekhar produced entire music for the song that’s going to come out in an album. I love the music. There are 5 songs which they have created. 2 of them are very beautiful songs and we hope that people will like them.
Finally something about Girish Karnad sahab. He wasn’t well but you still convinced him to be a part of the film.
Because he is the RAW chief and it’s a sequel. He is a brilliant actor and there are no two ways about it. But he is not keeping well, we wish him well. The kind of person he is, he is a fighter. He has a problem with his respiratory system and he needs a continuous flow of oxygen in his nose. When I approached him he told me I am not keeping well. I asked what has happened. He said I have to carry this oxygen pack with me even when I sleep so it has become difficult for me to travel. I said do you want to do it? He said I want to do it. I like acting. I don’t want to say no to you like that. I said we’ll make you as comfortable as possible. He said send me the script. So when he read the script he said I want to do it. I said are you sure? He told that I have taken a decision and I will make sure I’ll come and do it. He plays an important part and so it’s good to see him. An actor of that calibre and Salman Khan come from very different schools but they gel brilliantly on camera. Salman loves him and respects him a lot.

★ Kiccha Sudeep played Balli to Salman’s Chulbul Pandey!
9.01.20
A superstar in the Kannada film industry, Kiccha Sudeep turned the main antagonist for Salman Khan’s final 2019 release, Dabangg 3 that has notched up over Rs 130 crore at the box office till now. The Woods caught up with the actor, who played Balli to Salman’s Chulbul Pandey, for a chat… The Woods: has the response been so far?
Kiccha: I debuted in Hindi movies with Phoonk in 2008. Then I did films like Phoonk 2, Rakta Charitra and Rann. Dabangg 3 now is from one of the biggest names in the industry with one of the superstars. It’s one of my biggest films there (Bollywood). The response has been really good, everyone is speaking very genuinely about it, there’s no icing on it. I see a lot of people online giving their opinions and even those have been very encouraging.
What was the vibe on the set like?
We shot mostly in Mumbai and it was a great team. Everyone connected to each other very well. It was a very positive team and everyone was very nice to each other.
How did you prepare yourself to play such an evil character who fights Chulbul Pandey?
I didn’t prepare at all. I just went on set and delivered the requirements. I used to go there and sit with the director to understand what he wants. As far as Chulbul Pandey is concerned, I knew I had to deal with an aura named Salman Khan and not Chulbul Pandey. There had to be some equality on screen, I had to look like a baddie who could give a tough fight to Chulbul Pandey.
How was Salman Khan as a co-star?
I don’t think anybody can have a bad experience with him. He is kind man, he has a good heart and very giving. He’s very easy to work with and gives you your space. All I have is good memories with him.
Did you work out and build your body up for this role? I had luckily done a film called Pailwaan (a 2018 Kannada film) for which I had started my workout. During Dabangg 3, I kind of had to keep that momentum going so that till the climax is over, I stay in good shape. I regularly worked out because of that.
Did Salman give you workout tips? He’s not someone who’d barge into your space unless you ask him something. We never worked out together, we would workout by ourselves on set before giving the shot, but we never discussed it.
How difficult was it shooting the big climax fight scene?
Bruises and damages are a part of every fight scene and every actor has a story to narrate of that. We shot the climax scene for 23 days, it was very big climax.
Apparently, there was one scene where your character had to kick Chulbul Pandey but you couldn’t do it because of your respect for Salman?
It was the chest area and I did it once. After that I was asked to do it harder and I found it a little difficult to do it. We have punched and pushed each other but it was difficult to kick on the chest. But we did manage at the end of the day.
How is Prabhudheva as a director?
He’s a fabulous human being. He’s very easy to work with and a superb person. He gets you into the thing and knows how to take it out of you. He’s more of a child, actually. This was the first time I worked with him.
Coming from the South Indian film industry, did you ever face any language barrier while speaking in Hindi?
A film is a film at the end of the day and language is something you need to catch up with. Nothing is difficult if you make up your mind. I have never dubbed for myself and I don’t find it difficult.
Are there any fun anecdote from the shoot?
There were a lot of funny moments because Salman sir himself is very humorous. I have never seen him blow anything out of proportion and be angry, he always has a funny side to him. There used to be a lot of laughter on set always. We worked hard and everybody was at ease. Prabhu sir himself was smiling all the time.
Any other Hindi movies in the pipeline? No, I’m back here (South) and have a lot of commitments here. Earlier too, I was shooting two films, a Telugu and Kannada film here. And in between that I did Dabangg 3 because I have huge respect for Salman sir. He has been in the industry for a very long time and when you get to work with such big names, you should just grab it and do it. Someday you can turn back and say, ‘These are the great people I have worked with.’
