The Unveiling of Prabhudheva: From Comedy Hero to Directorial Maestro
As the versatile icon Prabhudheva celebrates his 51st birthday, it's an opportune moment to delve into his acting journey, often overshadowed by his prolific directorial ventures that have been gaining prominence.
In the annals of Telugu cinema, the release of "Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana" in 2005 marked a watershed moment, reshaping the careers of its cast and crew. This transformative narrative not only propelled actor Siddharth to newfound fame but also bolstered the fanbase of its leading lady, Trisha. For Prabhudheva, the film marked a significant turning point as he transitioned from acting to directing, embarking on a trajectory that would see him helm projects starring Bollywood luminaries like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn.
Prabhudheva's journey in Tamil cinema commenced with his mesmerizing dance moves and charismatic screen presence, earning him the moniker "Michael Jackson of India." However, it was his portrayal as a comedic protagonist in films like "Kadhalan" (1994) that endeared him to audiences, showcasing his flair for delivering nuanced humor.
Contrary to the conventional Tamil hero's trajectory, which often veers towards action-oriented roles, Prabhudheva carved a niche for himself in comedy dramas, forming a formidable partnership with renowned comedian Vadivelu. Their camaraderie in films like "Raasaiyaa" (1995) and "Manadhai Thirudivittai" (2001) birthed a unique brand of slapstick comedy that resonated with audiences, cementing their status as a legendary duo.
Even in the absence of Vadivelu, Prabhudheva's comedic prowess shone through in films such as "VIP" (1997) and "Minsara Kanavu" (1997), where his impeccable timing and screen presence left an indelible mark. Collaborations with stalwarts like Kamal Haasan in "Kathalaa Kathalaa" (1998) further showcased his versatility, proving his mettle beyond comedic roles.
However, Prabhudheva's return to acting post his directorial ventures witnessed a decline in his once-illustrious career. Despite endeavors like "Devi" (2016) and a foray into horror with Karthik Subbaraj, the spark of his earlier comedic brilliance seemed to have dimmed.
In hindsight, Prabhudheva's journey epitomizes the age-old adage of 'lost in search of gold,' wherein his pursuit of directorial acclaim may have inadvertently eclipsed his comedic legacy on screen. Yet, his indelible contributions to Tamil cinema as both an actor and a director remain etched in the annals of cinematic history, serving as a testament to his enduring legacy.

★ Salman Khan taught me how to respect women, says Jaani choreographer of Billi Billi from Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan !
March 7, 2023
Salman Khan's new song Billi Billi from Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan has been appreciated for being a crowd pleaser and entertainer. ETimes spoke to the choreographer of the song Jaani, who revealed that working with Salman changed his perspective on several important issues in life. Jaani also reveals his experiences of working with Ram Charan and SS Rajamouli. Read on... How will you describe the experience of choreographing Salman Khan in Billi Billi from Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan?
He is amazing and it was fun to work with him. He feels no tension about the steps. He learns the steps on sets and performs them. Sometimes, if there’s something in particular that we need to tell him then we go to his house at Galaxy Apartments and brief him about it. I think there were 300 to 500 dancers in the song. Our DOP V Manikandan has shot the song beautifully as well.
Having worked with Salman Khan how do you rate his skill as a dancer? I worked with Salman Khan in Jai Ho but I was working under Radhika Rao back then. I worked under Prabhudheva Sir on the Seeti Maar song. Billi Billi is my first-time choreographing Salman Khan on my own.
He has rhythm in his body. He always suggests that whatever dance steps he does should be easy for the fans to emulate. He wants the songs, even if it’s an item song, to have dignity and grace. So that when the item song comes on TV people shouldn’t change the channel. They should be able to watch it with family. He thinks about people and which steps would look good if people perform them. Both of us think that our dance steps should be easy to do for everyone from a child to an old person. We used to gym together. I have learned a lot from him. From him, I've learnt how to stay down to earth and how to behave with people who are less privileged than me and how to respect women.
How did you sign on to choreograph Billi Billi song?
I got a call from Sharmila ma’am who is handling the film's production. She said, Bhai wanted to meet me. Then Bhai told me to come over to discuss things. I have choreographed five songs in this film. We did the first song in Hyderabad. And slowly I did all songs one by one. There’s one big song that I have choreographed for this film where Ram Charan makes a cameo appearance. Ram Charan sir gave me my first chance in a film. I was supposed to do Magadheera with him but missed out on that. Later, I got to do the film titled Racha (2012) with him. You also worked with SS Rajamouli after that. Rajamouli sir is my Guru. When I started out as a choreographer, I had gone to the shoot of one of his films. He liked my style and picked me. He taught me the importance of timing and framing in choreography. How many shots to get as per minute of the song? I did Maryada Ramanna, Eega and Baahubali with him. We call him Nandi Sir, which means ‘very close’ and we call him ‘Jakanna’ too.

★ Prabhudeva talks about working with Salman Khan, the pandemic's impact on content, and the future of movies…
-May 18, 2021
Prabhudeva’s recent movie, the Salman Khan-Disha Patani starrer Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai, had an OTT release on Eid. Although it missed its big screen date with most of India, but the film is doing brisk business in parts of the overseas market. The movie collected approx. 600k USD (Rs 4.39 cr) on Day 3 in overseas taking the three-day total to approx. 1.78 mn USD (Rs 13.04 cr). Based on the 2017 Korean action thriller The Outlaws, this is Prabhudeva’s third film with Salman with after Wanted (2009) and Dabangg 3 (2019).
As a director he believes Salman Khan as a star has gone through major transformation, ever since he first started working with him in 2009. “There is some kind of a transformation, definitely! His persona as a star has only evolved with time and he also feels the pulse of the audience really well. With so many years of experience in the industry, he has kind of mastered the art of stardom. As a superstar he knows what people want instinctively,” he points out.
Salman Khan may be a phenomenon but director Prabhudeva is a star in his own right. After experimenting with acting, producing and directing he insists dance is his first love. “I am a choreographer first, and dance is my passion. Dance has made me what I am today and I will always be a choreographer first. Then comes direction... I love and enjoy making films. Acting would feature third on the list,” he reveals.
When asked how the Bollywood brand of hero-worship is different from that in Southern films? “You know, I love to watch Amitabh Bachchan films. Especially the action films he worked in when he was younger. Similarly, I also enjoy watching action films that have Tom Cruise. Whether it is Hollywood, Bollywood or Southern films — we all love that particular kind of heroism. When the hero makes an entry and beats up the baddies, people love to watch it! It is a universal emotion. So, we are basically transforming the same emotions in the modern-day scenario,” he points out.
Prabhudeva also believes that as a director it is his job to entertain the audience first, a reason why never shies away from making out and out masala films. “I have made love stories like Ramaiya Vastavaiya and comedy films simultaneously. Down south also I’ve done love stories. As a director it is my job to make different kinds of films. I am willing to work with any genre only if I am convinced with the idea.”
While talking about the movie, the director says, “This is the first time most of us are experiencing new formats as a part of ‘new normal’. This is going to be an experiment where we release it simultaneously in cinemas and on OTT. We are all trying to adapt to the ways that things are changing around us. Times are sensitive and we hope we can provide some kind of entertainment for people sitting at home. This is just an attempt to make people smile when everything around is so gloomy.”
Has the pandemic then forced the makers to change narratives and storylines in films? “Of course, there will be an impact on storylines. Not just that, the shooting process will also get affected. Looking at the restrictions and strict protocols, it will surely hamper the way a script is written. Foreign travel is restricted, large audiences for shoots are disallowed too! Stories will definitely change with the changing circumstances,” he said.
Recalling how the shoot for Radhe was stalled last year due to the lockdown, he says: “By god’s grace we had finished almost everything. Only two songs and some work were left to be done before the lockdown was announced. About 98 per cent of the film was done before the lockdown. When we resumed shooting, we knew what we wanted to shoot and so we wrapped up everything as soon as we got the chance to do it. Even if we had to shoot Radhe a year later, we would do it the same way as we have done it now.”
Has the viewership pattern changed in the last one year? “In my house nobody is going out. Kids also don’t step out a lot, everyone has their own mind-set. Ready content is always available and we watch whatever is available. That is a big change,” he opines.
Last but not the least, what message would he want to give out to his fans in such bleak times? “My message is simple. Those who have money and can help should help the poor. Those who can stay home, should stay home. Mainly, everyone should help in some way or the other. Even I’m not going out, I’m helping in a small way too. Some people do it with manpower, some help with money, for everyone it’s different. Just help each other and love each other. Don’t lose hope,” he signs off

★ 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai' Got Great Response Because Of Salman Khan: Prabhu Deva!
In an exclusive chat with Outlook’s Eshita Bhargava, Prabhu Deva gets candid about working with Salman Khan, releasing 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’ on an OTT platform, his creative process, and much more.
May 22, 2021
As the country grapples with the deadly second wave of Covid-19, Salman Khan and director Prabhu Deva honoured their "commitment” of releasing at least one film on Eid. ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, starring Salman Khan, Disha Patani, Randeep Hooda, and Jackie Shroff was supposed to have a major theatrical release. However, with the theatres being shut, the film was released in the pay-per-view digital format along with a theatrical release in 40 other countries.
In an exclusive chat with Outlook’s Eshita Bhargava, Prabhu Deva got candid about working with Salman Khan, releasing 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’ on an OTT platform, his creative process, and much more.
Excerpts from the interview:
Q) How does it feel to get such a response in just a few days?
It's all because of Salman sir. His stardom is enormous and his fans have shown their love to our film.
Q) This is your third film with Salman Khan. How was the experience working with him? I am sure, by now you both must be aware of each other’s working style.
Yeah, we know each other's working style. And of course, it was always a good experience and still is. It is easy working with him.
Q) Salman has his style when it comes to dancing. Are you a tough taskmaster?
Laughs. When I am choreographing I make him do some more dance. When I'm directing, I let the choreographer make decisions. He does it in his style, everyone knows Salman sir's style.
Q) Three things about Salman that you like?
He has a very big heart. He does so much for people, he respects ladies and everyone around him. Also, he loves children, those are the three things I like about him.
Q) Salman’s movies are a super hit and manage to earn crores. However, there will be no box-office collection this time. What do you have to say about that? What are your expectations from the film now?
Any director, producer, or actor wants his film to come to the theatres. But, this is a new experience. The reach has been phenomenal. If it would have come in theatres, it would've been great."
Q) Are you disappointed? What was the intention behind going ahead with the release?
It's just the timing. This year, the second wave came in, and again theatres were shut, but keeping the commitment to audiences in mind Salman sir decided this.
Q) Do you think OTT platforms are a game-changer? Especially during this pandemic?
I feel that it's a change. Suddenly, DVD came and then satellite TV came in, technology is improving every day. But, theatres will always remain theatres. Now it’s a game-changer.
Q) For the people who haven’t watched it yet, how would you describe the film? How is it different from other Salman movies – ‘Wanted’ and ‘Dabangg’?
No description. It's a Salman Khan film and those who like Salman sir's films will surely enjoy watching Radhe. It's entertaining and an entertaining film is most loved when Salman Khan is there. The songs from the film are chart-busters from the time they were released, the action also compliments well when sir is on screen. It's an end-to-end family entertainer film.
Q) What is your creative process like while directing a film?
Every director has a vision for his film and works hard towards it. It's the same with me.
Q) Tell us something about recreating 'Seeti Maar' that originally featured Allu Arjun.
It's a very good song. Salman sir liked the song and was very cool with recreating it in his way. It has the highest number of views and has become this season's favourite song, thanks to Devi Sri Prasad who is the music director of this song. He gave music for the original song and recreation for Radhe, it was very sweet of him.
Q) Do you think Radhe would work as a stressbuster during this pandemic?
Yes, I think it will.

Radhe – As soon as the theatres open, your Most Wanted Bhai will be released, says Prabhu Dheva
Stopping all the theory about the arrival of the Salman starrer Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, the movie's chief Prabhu Dheva says everything relies upon the lockdown. "We have cShraddha Kapoor encourages people to be eco friendly, ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi a little segment of shooting left. Close to 3-4 days. The after creation is on and we can come whenever the performance centers open," says Prabhu, conceding that it will be hard to get crowds once more into theaters. "In the event that anybody can do this (get crowds once more into theaters), it is Salman Sir. He is the expectation after the Covid. We are trusting that venues will open so we can allow the crowd to return. We approve of Diwali or Christmas 2020. Or on the other hand with Republic day in 2021. Nothing has been chosen."
