will Jeff and liu ever run across each other and does liu ever learn about the existence of Slenderman? if so how does all of that that go down?
yes!! liu finally runs into jeff when he’s about 26 (16 years later) and it is. a Lot on all ends. liu’s forced to deal with the fact that his older brother has not grown and is nothing like the idol he’s built up over a decade later and jeff has to deal with the fact he actually didn’t kill liu, whoops! i could and probably will write an entire essay on jeff’s thoughts about his origin some other time but tldr he is Not coping well with liu being alive for various reasons. it’s definitely not what either of them were expecting and would take decades to unpack in therapy if either of them actually went to therapy. alas, the best the mansion has is nina, and jeff knows for a fact she does Not follow doctor-patient confidentiality
liu has been on the run for the past decade or so, and jeff isn’t Really sure what the social protocol for encountering your long-lost/presumed dead older-younger brother is, but he’s pretty sure leaving liu now would be Bad, so he obviously brings liu back to the mansion with him when he returns. liu is essentially in shock for the entire experience of 1. actually finding his brother 2. finding out his brother is still 13 and 3. finding out his brother is still 13 because he’s been taken in by an eldritch monster and hidden away in a timeless pocket dimension full of other murderers/supernatural beings. jeff is just lucky he didn’t pass out, because he is Not strong enough to carry a grown ass man into the woods for that long
brian is absolutely flabbergasted that this is the third fucking time someone has shown up to the mansion because of jeff (nina, then jane). sally is initially happy to have another kid her age (sully) but then talks to sully One Time and spends the rest of her day promptly regretting that decision. ben nearly dies a second time when he sees that liu’s been using nothing but a flip phone for years now. jane offers liu her number to page her at any time, having had a Similar Experience of having built this image of Jeff the Killer in her mind for literal years before discovering he’s literally just an ipad kid with knives.
liu becomes the first real constant adult presence in the mansion. jane leaves frequently because of her family and while brian and tim are Almost constant, they sometimes leave to stay with jessica because the mansion can still be Too Much for them. liu doesn’t have anywhere else to go or anything better to do, having completed his life’s purpose, so he’s just forced to Stay

A Chapter in Jelaine’s Life: Some things About being a Reader
An Interview Article by Francis and Nad (February 2024)
Tumblr media
Readers have different approaches to picking up a novel and have varying tastes– and for a bookworm, you could imagine all the stories that had accumulated during their journey in the vast spaces of a library. Each shelf, rows and rows of stories that came from people all over history and realities. For this interview, we found someone who can share their experience with literature. Our resident bookworm for this article is Jelaine Dio.
BACKGROUND
The 25-year-old graduate of Bachelor of Science in Psychology found herself reading stories in her past time during 5th Grade. While the other kids in her class were playing outside during break time, she was exploring her English textbook for the short story collection; that is when the world opened up to her. Now, she reads novels from the likes of Sally Rooney, John Green, Jandy Nelson and Coco Mellors—some of her current favorite authors that she noted. Her current read is The Guest by Emma Cline, previously followed by Jenny Mustard’s Okay Days.
A lot of these books share a similar genre: Contemporary fiction. She stated that it was her favorite genre in fictional literature because she found herself easily visualizing the story if it is closer to real life or based on certain personality traits.
Tumblr media
KEY EXPERIENCES
“Summer Time: A Book A Day”
Only after a few years of falling in love with the short stories, she managed to read over 7 books a week during her summer vacations. Although some readings are motivated by school credits, she still read an impressive amount during that time. She noted that she has read over 200 books since then. As life goes by, people get busy with their time. Even if life gets busy, she always tries to slip in a moment to read. She said “I read my book if I was waiting for something or if there’s a downtime—whether in public or at home. Because I do not have any cellular data on my phone when I leave the house, I always bring my book for times when I must wait.”
We asked her what was the first fiction she had read and she directed us back to her 3rd year of Junior High. She asked her classmate for a recommendation for a book to start reading fiction “She is also a bookwork and reads her book on an iPad. I asked her ‘What ‘s a good fiction to read first?’ and she let me borrow a copy of ‘The Little Prince’”. She noted that before that, she was not reading much then. After picking up the book, that is when she started being a book fanatic again.
On average, outside of summer time when she finishes a book a day, her average reading time then lasts for two to 3 days per novel. Now, she slowed down to finishing a book in a week but if she has work, then she finishes a book in a month. After she finishes a book, she takes a day to take a break and she picks up another book to start.
I’ll See It Through, Always
When she reads a book, she sees through it, even if it is average “It’s like in the movies, for example. I watch a movie and I find myself enjoying it but when I see some bad reviews, I don’t find it as a waste of time because I enjoyed the work”. She also added how she also thinks about the effort the author took to finish their story. That’s why sometimes when she finds a story in BookTok, a community in TikTok that shares content about literature, she reads it because of how it was marketed. Sometimes, she ends up reading erotic fiction without realizing it because of how the synopsis was advertised. During the interview, she laughingly said that she found that it was her guilty pleasure to read those types of stories
INSIGHTS
Eenie-Meenie-Miney Book!
When entering a bookstore, some people may feel overwhelmed when offered a lot of options. Jelaine is one of these individuals. Because of this, she has devised three ways to choose the next book she will indulge herself in. One is looking at its cover. As ironic as it is for a bibliophile, she does not really follow the famous saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover." When she sees that a book has an aesthetic and eye-catching cover, she will pick it up and read it. Though on some occasions, she will go through the book’s synopsis before buying it.
Another way is through recommendations in social media’s “BookTok". She follows countless book lovers on Instagram that post their recommendations in their feeds. When she sees these posts, she will buy two to three of those novels and put them on her shelf of books she will later read. Lastly, she picks up and buys the next novel that she will read by browsing the books of the same authors as the previously finished novel she enjoyed. With these three ways, she has fortunately bought novels that she considered a “good book".
"A Good Book"
It is fair to think that a bookworm that has read hundreds of novels would have a grasp of what makes a "good book". In Jelaine’s viewpoint, a novel that has a striking and grand plot is not important, but what is important is the story’s overall flow. She also added that “ A good book is something you can genuinely relate to the character even though that character has a different experience compared to you." Jelaine also mentioned that when she underlined and bookmarked a lot of lines and parts of a book that she is reading, then that novel is exceptional for her.
Tumblr media
LESSONS TO SHARE
A Wider Vocabulary And Getting In Touch To One’s Feelings And Emotions
For almost half of her lifetime, Jelaine has been “sticking her nose" into numerous books in various genres and lengths. With all these consumed fictional works, she has gained extensive knowledge in vocabulary. She quoted, “Due to reading, my word bank is overflowing". As a result, she can understand words in novels that are unusual while also understanding each sentence that she reads quickly.
Reading has also helped her to become more empathetic, since she is able to know and feel what the characters are going through and understand them as the story goes on. Hence, when a person reads, they can be in touch with their emotions and process them in a healthy manner.
Something for Readers
Jelaine’s go-to book recommendation to whoever asks her is Celeste Ng’s first novel, "Everything I Never Told You". She deemed this as a good recommendation since it has themes that will make a person feel multiple emotions throughout its entirety. As she shares what the book is about, she mentions that it circles around the idea of family dynamics and how grief affects each member. She said, "This novel is heavy and heart-wrenching". Another book recommendation she mentioned was "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" written by Gail Honeyman, which is also a heavily emotional novel.
In addition, she mentioned a quote from one of the books that genuinely made an impact on her. The line was “They teach you growing up that you are only one thing at a time-angry, lonely, content--but he's never found that to be true. He is a dozen things at once. He is lost and scared and grateful, he is sorry and happy and afraid. But he is not alone.” This is from V. E. Schwab’s, "The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue. With these few pieces of line, she feels comforted and loved since it tells the reader that it is good to feel emotion and not to invalidate one’s feelings.
“When you read, it’s not just printed words on a paper, it is a mixture of the character’s experiences, feelings and views and in turn, you also experience what they have gone through and feel their emotions. With reading, you gain new experiences without physically experiencing them, but through words on a piece of paper." - Jelaine Dio

Fun lil random DSMP headcanons cuz i don't have enough character specific ones thought up!
PART ONE [also make sure to follow if u like these :) ]
[REMINDER THESE ARE ALL ABOUT THE CHARACTERS AND ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE REAL PEOPLE IN ANY WAY]
- Jack manifold carries around red and blue highlighters and doodles on stuff like the lampposts and old or ruined buildings
- Niki has about a million and one outfits and bottles of hair dye and half of them are just scattered around
- Fundy's middle names aren't the names of other family members, they're different names that Wilbur and Sally came up with for him before he was born
- Sally is a shapeshifter and a trans woman
-Ponk has a few different prosthetic's and likes to change them out based on the occasion or whatever he feels matches best
- Ranboo prefers to wear skirts instead of trousers because they're less awkward on him and most trousers are too short for his long ass legs, plus they're just more comfortable generally
- People often mistake Philza as being either really weak or really ripped when in reality he doesn't have a lot of muscle built up since he doesn't fight much anymore (just a slightly larger chest from being a bird hybrid), but he's still a very capable fighter and could easily rival Technoblade
- The several explosions Tubbo had went through left him with several scars all over his body and even took out one of his eyes, so he trained his body to build muscle so he'd be able to take a lot of hits without causing more permanent injury
- Tubbo sees alot of Wilbur and Schlatt in himself and hates it, but it's most obvious when it comes down to his addictive personality, he very easily became more than attached to explosives after being put through explosions, and often times Tommy and Ranboo have to keep him away from things like gambling machines, potions, etc just incase
- Tommy has a huge soft spot for animals, even the ones that'd be considered dangerous, because he sees them as kind of replacements for the people who used to be his friends
- Quackity has alot of prosthetic eyes and sometimes switches them out to really creepy designs to see people's reactions
-Purpled is an alien but has been around humans for a few years, and although he can hide his alien features and has a small shapeshifting ability he chooses not to
- Purpled, Ranboo and Slimecicle accidentally break stuff because they don't quite understand how they work, Purpled does it pretty rarely because he's been around people for years, and Ranboo doesn't do it as much because he's been around people for a while, but they both still catches themselves smashing a plate or two by dropping it instead of putting it down normally. Slimecicle cannot stop breaking shit, he has no clue what he's doing most of the time
- Slimecicle moulds their body into different shapes and forms, and often mimicks other people, Quackity encourages them to as long as they don't mimick him. It can be really creepy with how accurate they get and sometimes the only noticeable difference is slight green tints left on the skin
- Hypixel and all the mini games are just different phone games, because of this Purpled gets called an iPad Kid by the Las Nevada's crew since he plays Bedwars non stop
- MCC Is an alternate universe consisting of everyone as characters, but occasionally the universe breaks slightly and some of the cast gets memories from their own universes and joke about it, before quickly forgetting

MasterPost - Character Information
A basic overview of the characters of the Dream SMP Nursery AU!
More characters will be added to this list over time! If your favourite character is not here, I apologise. Check back soon for updates!
Caretakers
Drista -
Drista doesn’t fully work there, but she mostly comes in for work experience. However, she spends a lot of her time on Tommy and sometimes Ranboo. She does officially have a time table where she comes in to work, but she never follows it. She is the older sister of Dream, and she’s 16 years old.
Dream XD -
Dream XD is Drista and Dream’s older cousin. He is extremely awkward around the children, and prefers to spend more time in his office. He mostly does the heavy lifting around the nursery, and the paperwork. His favourite kid is probably George.
Kristin -
Kristin is the only caretaker that the kids actually listen to, and as such, she’s in charge of snack times and nap times. She is ‘married’ to Phil, or so he thinks. She is an avian hybrid, and everyone calls her mum. She has since adopted Techno, Tommy, Wilbur and Phil.
Puffy -
Puffy doubles as the behavioural councillor and the nurse. She’s the ‘fun’ caretaker, as she plays with the kids the most. Foolish is her child, but Dream is overly attached to her. Her favourite game to play with the kids is Pirates, where her shoulders are the crows nest.
Children
Wilbur -
Wilbur is extremely dramatic, and very good with telling stories. He wants to be a singer in a band when he grows up, and wants to be famous. He has been banned from the sand pit for multiple reasons that include him eating the sand. L’manberg was a big game he made up elaborately, planning out every detail.
Fundy and Eret -
Fundy and Eret are twins. Their parents are Sally and Herobrine. Sadly, Sally and Herobrine’s relationship broke down, but Herobrine is still allowed to see them both on certain days of the week. He and Sally get along, but as friends. Eret got Hero’s God powers, while Fundy got Sally’s shapeshifting abilities. Eret is more calm and controlled, meanwhile Fundy likes to bite everyone. Fundy is also an ipad kid.
Tubbo -
Tubbo is a moobloom hybrid. He married Ranboo after watching Phil propose to Kristin. He was raised on a farm, and probably eats grass. He has way too much energy a lot of the time, but he usually burns it off by chasing bees or bugs around outside.
Ranboo -
Lugs around a fat diary with him constantly. His mother is the enderdragon. Just the whole dragon. He always collects little trinkets for her because she doesn’t get to see the overworld too often. He is terrified of a lot of things (worms, water, heights, mud) and writes a lot. He always writes letters to Tubbo.
Phil -
Phil is the oldest in the nursery, and probably the most independent. He proposed to Kristin and got very much rejected. He is an avian hybrid, however, he cannot fly currently, which really upsets him. His wings are bigger than he is. Fundy showed him one episode of Bleach and now he is obsessed. Despite being the oldest, he is probably the smallest, due to bird bone structure.
Techno -
The nursery went on a field trip, and brought Techno back. Now, he lives with Kristin. Techno is technically six months old, but he has the mental and physical capability of a 4 year old. He is very interested in reading, and is best friends with Phil. Anywhere Phil goes, Techno is sure to follow. Carl is a toy horse that he is very attached to.
Tommy -
Tommy is the youngest kid in the nursery, and spends a lot of time in the time out corner. He taught most of the class cuss words. He is also an avian hybrid, but his wings are very small. He takes the games way too seriously, and gets put in time out because of it. He’s barely 2 years old.
Dream -
Dream is a jealous kid. He gets jealous of people very easily, and ends up in time out a lot due to this. He tells the other kids things that his parents have told him, and while he never means to, he ends up making them upset. He took Tommy and Tubbo’s toys once and that was the big thing for the whole class for a long time.
Sapnap and BadBoyHalo -
They are twin demons. Sapnap is a fire demon who looks more human, while Bad is a shadow demon who looks less human. Sapnap was raised more around violence and the idea that humans should be killed, while Bad took his mother’s mentality of all humans being good. Sapnap, as such, is a trouble maker, and a bit of a bully, while BadBoyHalo hates making trouble, and is a bit of a snitch.
George -
George spends all of his time in the nap corner, because it’s very calm and its away from all the chaos of his classmates. He only really comes out to play with Dream and Sapnap or for snack times. Most of the other kids forget he’s there sometimes. He mostly just gets dragged out by Dream to play.
Niki -
Niki is the kid that everyone likes. She always pesters the caretakers to take her into the kitchen and help her bake cookies, and they always give in, as she is a master of using the cute face to get what she wants. She always goes around with the cookies afterwards and shares them with the other kids. Overall, she’s calm and wholesome, and is essentially everyone’s friend - until you annoy her, anyway.
Foolish -
Foolish spends most of his time there building in the sand pit. He only really comes inside to ask for water so he can wet the sand or other little trinkets he could use to add to whatever project he’s doing in the sand currently. However, most of his time is spent outside.
Sam -
Sam is a very smart kid. He’s pretty quiet, but he likes to make silly little contraptions. He helped Foolish make a working drawbridge with some lollipop sticks and other junk. No one knows how he does it. He ‘built’ Tommy’s hotel, which is just a box (he just scribbled ‘Big Init Hotell’ on the side of it and scribbled red on parts of it). He guards the time out corner for reasons still unknown.
Skeppy -
Skeppy is a pretty big troublemaker as well. He does a lot of stupid little pranks, but he never gets away with any of it due to Bad’s nature of wanting to do good. His favourite victim of his pranks is Techno. Skeppy is almost never seen without Bad, and vice versa.
Karl -
Karl’s parents are The Inbetween and The Other Side (nonbinary parents pog). He tells lots of stories about his ‘Time Travelling Adventures’. No one is really sure if the stories are real or not, but this group of kids are full of weird magic anyway so everyone doesn’t ask. He usually uses the other kids in the stories as well, and everyone wants to know if they’re in the latest story, so they don’t really care.
Remember that more information on the current kids listed and new character files for other kids are coming shortly! Check back for more!

MCC 18 SEP 21
Yellow Yacks and Cyan Coyotes with a little Aqua Axolotls. Part 1/1
The only reason I didn’t forget MCC was because I got the notification for Eret.
I have Wilbur on my TV. I’m going to watch Eret on my phone. And I’ll have Tommy on my iPad probably.
Wilbur throwing a tantrum and saying he won’t play.
I feel like a true Gen Z member with my multiple screens of minecraft.
I’m only just getting the Wilbur notification.
I love watching everyone run around before MCC and scale things.
Griefing the thumbnail. 😂
Wilbur just causes problems on purpose when it comes to group photos doesn’t he.
He just loves finding ways to cause problems.
Wilbur got a coconut!?!
I didn’t mean to type the question mark originally. But I am a bit confused.
Wilbur just stocking up on coconuts
True friendship is a quote book. I have several.
Baby banana boo.
Wait. I heard the word tumblr
Scott what did you do with tumblr?
I’m scared. Only Eret permitted on tumblr.
I remember watching hole in the wall as a tv show as a kid.
Wilbur’s glasses that don’t do anything.
There are September discounts for subbing?
Neato.
The conversations in my work discord are something else.
Not surprised that Wilbur is going for top swearer of MCC
But my residents are going to walk by my door and judge me.
Alright I apparently wasn’t signed in to twitch on my iPad and it took me entirely too long to learn to remember it.
Tommy looks like he’s really concentrating. Oh wait never mind.
Wow the yaks are in first currently. I might be cheering for a winning team for once.
Alright I have my iPad split screen between Tommy and the MCC website.
Everyone break the elevator!
In the game, not in the building I work. I don’t want that paperwork.
Stick together and place many block.
I’ve been in Wilburs position. “I’ll be captain” “yeah let’s let Wilbur be captain”
Not a single POV I have up is synced. But that’s life.
Oh not starting out strong.
Just keep going. Ignore the falling people just like ranboo last time.
We are at the absolute bottom for this game.
Where’s a bag of popcorn or something?
“Stay down there. That’s how I won that one time” -Ranboo
Down they go.
They didn’t have anywhere to run.
Second round!
Oh that wasn’t their best idea. It was fun seeing Erets POV of that.
Go Teams.
Turning down the volume on yellow yacks to listen to aqua axolotls.
Aqua please. You have so much potential.
Nope.
Switching audio again.
Yellow back at the bottom.
Ranboo ranboo ranboo ranboo
Down he goes. 😂 the timing of that was funny.
Please. Don’t die
Wilbur. Scott. Please.
Scott uncovering the creeper.
Their plan is literally just sit and be.
To be fair that’s my plan for everything I do.
Oh cobwebs are smart.
I’m eating very salty Chick-fil-A chips and need water.
We are still doing ok. Wow.
Cobwebs man. The real MVP.
They are still in 10th
COBWEBS!!! And Wilbur standing on the edge of a block.
THEY WON THAT?!?!!!!
It moved them from last to eight. But still. Wow.
Holy cow. How did that happen.
I always forget what the acronym game is.
Oh yeah. Wilbur snuck and found this. I remember.
Go team!
Oh the website updates faster than the game. But we’re starting off decent.
I’m going to have to take back that statement aren’t I?
Go go go go
Fly fly fly fly
Build build build build
Go Wilbur!
Rafter strat.
Wilbur found the rafters and everyone else loved it.
Blocking his own jump. 😂
I really should do the inside joke chair emoji thing for laughing. But I don’t care.
Tiktok is nice. Depends on the side you are on, but it’s nice.
We are doing halfway decent. I’m proud of us.
Wilbur is struggling and I think he might cry.
Not bad. I don’t think.
Power sweater.
This game in MCC has rainbow road vibes
I’ll have to make that it’s own post since I feel that’ll be popular ish.
Holy cow we hit first on the website!! How?
Ranboo sweet one.
They said no peaking to Wilbur.
Wilbur making them block stuff off and the like is so funny.
Run yaks run!
I missed the moment Wilbur just mentioned. Oh well I’m sure I’ll see the clip.
First last first.
Hey 4th overall. Look at em.
Wilbur switching to full screen to show us his M&Ms.
Let me balance my water bottle on the bedpost above my head. No way this could possibly go wrong in multiple ways.
Double coins. Gorgeous.
Chickens are being sniped.
What’s going to work? TEAM WORK!
I don’t think I have ever watched a game of grid runners in my life?
Alright game should start any second because it started on the website.
Alright stream is delayed about 13 seconds.
Go teams go!
Wilbur just sniping targets.
We’re doing ok.
All this dirt.
Go go go
We’re completing things first.
Cake!
Wilbur got in!
Now they eat
Oh but they are falling.
Oh wow the painting is complicated. My friends and I would fail to communicate so fast.
Is this lever thing just find the button but complicated?
Go you got the levers!
Items grab!
My friends and I would seriously struggle unless I was allowed the lead. But I would lead us off a cliff.
Everyone get ready to go in as soon as the cake is done.
Exit! You guys are so close! Please!
Woohoo!
Go Ranboo! Go Scott!
Come on guys. Come on. Good communication.
I think I like watching Wilbur with MCC because he had a similar strategy to what I would do.
Wilbur why did you try to act cool!!!
They keep saying they are miles ahead but not according to that scoreboard.
You placed 3rd. Good job y’all.
I’m excited for bonuses.
They have another minute until the others run out of time.
Good soup.
Oh wow. Ranboo and Wilbur really are always totgehe.
We are doing well. I see the board changing on the website so much.
Where will they land.
Looks like 2nd or 3rd
Fourth overall. Not bad.
Lap time is logical.
Audience vote?
Look at me redownloading twitter.
Can you not see how others have voted on twitter?
Oh there it is. It only showed mine for a sec there.
Battle box looks close. I voted ace race.
Oh it all looks close right now.
Long break my beloved.
I don’t have time to start my laundry but still. My beloved.
Game 5/8 so MCC won’t be too much longer.
I look up and Wilbur is shaking his ass at George. I’m not surprised.
Phil and Sneeg judging Wilbur.
Wilbur twerking on Phil and Sneeg joining.
Poor Phil.
Wilbur just having visited so many random places with so many random words just gathered.
Oh wow parkour tag is low. But so is sands.
Oh wow it was a tie. Between Sands and Parkour
“Wilbur is Sand Daddy” -Scott and then all the agreement noises.
Sands of Time is my favorite practical game
Maybe because Wilbur is really good at it. And Ranboo had been trained by him.
This is just good.
I swear Sand daddy is going to kill me during this.
I am just going to pass away.
My stream delay though.
Wilbur who says he stays very quiet as he makes circus music noises.
Minecraft Rhinos. Because I can’t spell their real name.
I don’t quite understand sand of time. But I like watching. It’s like college football.
I am missing the only college football game I care about for MCC.
Go Team.
No blue yet.
All the mobs.
“You better not die” sung to the tune of Santa clause is coming yo town. -Wilbur
Keep it up guys.
Oh no. They lost the key.
Oh good they found the key.
You can tell Wilbur had a musicians brain. He just hears something vaguely lyrical and starts singing a song.
Gotta promote your band whenever you can I guess.
I listened to the last Ep for like an hour and a half yesterday while I went about my day.
I wonder how we’re doing?
Only a few seconds.
I could warm a heating pad in the amount fo time they have left.
Ranboo doing these puzzles so amazingly.
Quit caring about what others think. Just do your thing.
I swear the sand daddy thing.
I love the cage of shame for not tracking your sand.
I zoned out. Red cyan orange?
We’re almost 15 minutes into sands.
I want to play Minecraft on my iPad right now.
Wait the website updated. We were 6th?
Yikes. I thought they did better.
3rd overall though!
Wait what was that about most influential improv thingy? Good for them.
Build mart!
Oh Ace Race. Wilbur calling Ace Race his girlfriend now.
I want to see the enemies to lovers fan fictions of Ace race and Wilbur.
Oh wait I can do that. I can verbally tell one like I have others in the past.
I’m excited to watch this.
Wilbur flirt with the race.
I’m not mentally prepared for this.
Everyone just joined because they don’t want to miss Wilbur x Ace Race.
Oh no. He’s not doing so well.
Oh Wilbur is giving us more.
Complicated history…
Whispering to Ace Race and Solidarity.
You’ve got it Wilbur.
Keep on talking. Keep your brain busy while you play.
Mommmm Wilbur is flirting with Ace Race again!
He’s whispering though so I can’t quite hear it and will have to find a clip channel that added subtitles.
Oh teams are changing on the website.
“What are you doing in my women Philza?” -Wilbur
“I will end your bloodline which is canonically also me.” -Wilbur
I can not track all the quotes from this. That’s beyond my abilities.
Wilbur did halfway decent, but it still uncomfortable.
Ace Race is a person now. Also the fact that Wilbur compliments Ace Race so much.
Sally v. Ace Race.
I want to find that fanart now.
Scott honey. Confirmed cannon is everyone fancies the fish.
4th. Not bad.
We’re still talking Ace Race x Wilbur
Build mart! My dearest buildmart!
I miss them sliding around in the sleds.
Grab da flowers!
We’re in 1st at the minute.
Come on yaks!
No coyotes!
Hurry hurry hurry.
Work discord going it’s thing again.
Oh we’re dropping fast.
Move the redstone! Thank you
Alright back on top. Keep it up.
Nevermind.
I love the way the build spaces for the different teams work.
Who is the person on the build?
Oh first again? Nevermind.
Oh we popped up to second. We’re so behind. Come on.
Duck!
Good soup energy. Now all I can think is the bi wide energy song.
Time is running out.
Yeah we aren’t catching up to first. Just hold second.
Where is granite?
Game over.
Third overall now. Not bad. Last game time they can possibly pull it into dodge bolt.
I need to go get a picture with the President of the university for a game with my work.
Good Soup.
I’m sitting here making popcat noises while waiting.
Game time! Go team! Survive!
Wait where did the steamer go? I wasn’t paying attention.
He’s back.
He’s swearing for his points on the swearing list.
Is pee a soup? No. I don’t think it’s think enough under normal circumstances.
Karl is apparently swearing according to Twitter. Good for him. He deserves to swear some as a treat.
Everyone running and leaving shubble.
Oh good they are all together.
Just keep running.
4th so far.
Cars. Beep beep.
Ranboo breath child.
Calling Wilbur like some kind of golden retriever.
Bow boy
Scott is leader now. Because otherwise they are arguing.
We are playing the don’t die strategy.
Come on team.
Did I put my cut in this post? I did.
Ranboo having stolen the airdrop. And he has a thing!
Oh the boarder is right behind them.
They are fighting Dream?
Nice Will.
We’re in fourth.
Boarder is right there.
Sapnap? Nope.
Pink attack and they book it.
Oh no. There goes Wilbur.
Is it just Scott?
Scott vs the world.
Just Organe and pink. They came third.
GO ORANGE!
Please. Please let us do it.
Overall third. Pink overtook yellow.
Sadness.
Ranboo has achieved: Found Hated Game
Ranboo has been hit by Survival games so many times now.
If they had just lasted a tiny bit longer they would have come second.
Cheering Orange I suppose.
I have no skill at picking winner POVs.
I have 3 teams I was at least kinda watching. And none of them are in dodgebolt.
Gosh can hear Ranboo tweaking.
Wow. Yellow yaks just as a team twerking.
What is Wilbur chewing on? Wilbur don’t chew on things that probably aren’t meant to be chewed on.
I can hear the band outside of my window. I think my campuses football game is starting.
The drum line practiced outside my window all the beginning of the semester so it’s fun seeing them march to the stadium.
Oh and there are the cheerleaders.
Oh right I was watching MCC! Who’s winning?
Come on Orange. So close.
Wait I looked out my window. Why is the band walking back to where they were?
Along the sidewalk?
I thought it was game time for a minute.
Oh dodgebolt could go either way.
Distracted by Jesus.
Grian! You got this!
Nice Grian.
Oh Grian has a chance!
Oh!
Oh!
It’s so close!
Ooo ooo!
I’m so invested.
I SEE THE CONFETTI IN THE SITE! But I don’t want to miss the shot.
Come on Grian.
I know you do it. But you’ve got this
YESSSSS
Woo hoo!!
That was a good MCC. Now to do the chores and homework I originally planned to do today.
That was a nice stream.
Scott is separating Ranboo and Wilbur?
Please. Scott.
Don’t separate the beings.
You know. Twitter needs to politely bully Scott into keeping Ranboo and Will together.
Oop and that’s Wilbur done. That was fun.
See y’all next time!

Little Book of Magic -Chapter 1
Chapter 1
13TH July 2015
Sally was awoken by her phone alarm next to her bed. Groaning, she grabbed her phone and saw it said 9:42, turning off the song which was set to wake her, it was one of her favorites. She lay back on the bed, looking up at ceiling that had been painted to look like a starry-sky. Her bedroom was tiny in size and was filled with her toys, books, collectibles and her fan art collections.
The 12 year old was the second eldest of her siblings, she was pretty and creative. She had a special love for making things using crafts like knitting and sewing. She spent lots of time writing but her favorite thing of all was drawing, most of the pictures she created were of her favorite characters and she had come to love them.
Sally ran her fingers through her long blonde hair and rubbed the sleep from her eyes, as Sally stared up she noticed something was out of place, it was her hand made Jack Frost doll on the floor.
"How did you end up on the floor Jack?" she said as she picked up the rag doll up. Sally couldn't help but smile at the blue button eyed doll, she placed him back on shelf and put his wooden staff back under his arm. "There your back where you belong", she pulled open her curtains and looked out onto the street and headed downstairs toward to the kitchen where her siblings were.
The first person she saw was her sister Maria, she was 16 and oldest, she had long brown hair, brown eyes and she wore glasses. Maria and Sally liked the same things like writing, reading fanficton, watching their favorite movies and playing Just Dance together.
Next there was Charlie, he was 11 and like Maria he had brown eyes and brown hair but his was curly, he enjoy his games, building with Lego, bike riding and most things that typical boys enjoy.
Last was Oliver, he was two year old had blonde hair similar to Sally's and big blue eyes. He was a sweet and adventuress little boy who loves superheroes and dinosaurs.
"Sally" Oliver called as his sister walk in.
"Morning Ollie" Sally replied, smiling at her baby brother, she ruffled his hair and kissed him on the head.
"So, are there any new comments on the new chapter?" She asked Maria who was on her iPad, she was looking on the sister's fanfic blog.
"Only 3 but they just the normal ones like love it, can't wait for more and like it", Maria said showing them to Sally as she made a drink and sat in her chair.
"Mmm, I wish they'd say more than that, I really like it when they give more of a critique! You know it helps me feel to see things freshly and to look at it from their point of view" Sally said taking a drink.
"Which one is it, the time travel one or that 'Beetlejuice' one" Charlie asked munching on his cereal, making his sisters' look up.
"Niether" Maria answered then showing Charlie her iPad " It is the one of Lizzie meets the Big Four and saves the world. You know, the story that we've been talking about it for months!"
"Oh yeah", Ollie said wanting to be part of the conversation.
"And that's why your my favourite brother", Maria whispered in her brothers ear. Sally heard an E-mail arrive for Maria, she touched the button and her blue eyes concentrated on the screen, she quickly showed it to Maria who responded to what she read with a gasp.
"Oh my kitty-cats! They posted a new chapter" Maria said
"I KNOW! They haven't updated for months" Sally added and both girls let out fan girl squeals.
Charlie rolled his eyes at both, Sally and Maria were fangirls, they enjoyed what most fangirls enjoyed such as talking about Fanfiction and ship (the relationships of characters) and reading fanficton.
Charlie couldn't never understand his sisters being fangirls, anytime news popped up about their favourite films they went nuts. Sometime he found it funny, but most of the time he couldn't stand it but that was what most siblings are like he guessed.
The fandom the girls were part of was "the Big Four", it focussed on the main characters from 4 animated films, How to train your dragon, Tangled, Brave and Rise of the Guardians.
"You know it's not really a real fandom" Charlie said before taking a bite of his toast.
"That what make is unique because it's not like other fandoms" Sally answered.
"But it's not like Marvel or Star Wars or even Harry Potter, you know" Charlie said back as Oliver took a bite out of his pancake (which is he's favourite food) as he watched his older siblings bicker until their mum walked in.
"Good Morning lovely people", she said which made all four jump and turn.
"Morning mum" three of them said in a chorus, while their baby Brother said
"Mamma"
She gave a smile before kissing Ollie on his check "I'm surprised your bickering doesn't wake the dead",she said in good humour.
"Yeah" Sally laughed weakly, rubbing her necklace as she, Maria and Charlie looked embarrassed about their silly little argument.
"I'm sorry but, I just don't get it" Charlie carried on "especially the "shipping" thing".
"At least we're making sense" Maria commented "I agree that some shipping really doesn't work".
"Anyway dose anyone know what's happening today" Mum asked looking at her kids.
"Ur...going to town?" Sally finally said.
"Swimming?" Charlie said enthusiastically.
"Food shopping?" Maria asked.
"Disneyland?" Ollie added which make everyone chuckle.
"No, you know I've be talking about the craft show in Wales" Mum said. The kids did remember their mum had talked about her plans for weeks, "well it's tomorrow, so we have to go to Nanna's today, you do remember that Nanny Lilly is coming with me, and all four of will be at her house for the day? You'll be fine there together, I can trust you to be good and look after each other?"
Knowing that arguing about it won't do anything the change their mums plans,
"OK" all three said, even though their faces showed anything but excitement.
Soon after lots of encouragement by their mum they were all washed and dressed and had packed their bags. Along with clothes they packed, they took books, games, movies and toys to keep them occupied at Nan's. Sally grabbed her drawing book and pencils before she headed downstairs, her mum and her brothers and sister were already in the car, Sally found her key when she notices an old family picture.
There was one person missing from that photo and that was her dad. He was a wonderful dad, kind and loving to his wife and family. He had served in the British Army but he passed away before Oliver was born. Sally, Maria and Charlie all missed him but their mum missed him the most.
"Sally" she heard her mum call, the young girl took one more look at the photo of her dad before went toward the door.
Soon they were on the road, driving from home in Liverpool to Wales. Sally was seated in the passenger seat, listening to music on her phone watched the world go by through the window. It was a long drive so they occupied themselves. She glanced over to the back seat and saw Charlie was playing his Ds, Maria reading her 'How to train your dragon' book and Oilver already fast asleep and he looked very angelic. Sally turned to her mum who was concentrating on the road before she looked back at her view from the window.
Sally stared at the clouds, she watched them slowly drifting across the sky changing shapes as they moved. She began to imagine Hiccup and Toothless flying among them, Sally would often daydream of stories or characters when she wasn't doing much.
She always thought life in the stories was more exciting and interesting than real life, the heroes and heroines lived in beautiful and magical places where they could go exploring and meet wonderful creature and interesting people. Rather than real life where most places were too far away and cost losts of money to get to. Sally wished she lived like her heroes were there was something exciting happening every day.
After a couple of stops for toilet and drink breaks, they made it to the small seaside town they all recognise. Driving through the town and up a hill where their Nan's house stood, it looked like an old big Victorian dolls house and their mum's side of the family had lived in it for centuries.
They could see Nana Lilly standing on the front porch, waving as mum parked the car. The children all jumped out and ran to hug her.
"How was the drive down?" Nan asked them.
"Long as usual" Charlie said as their mum join them.
"And we went down the Winding Way this time which make me feel sick". Sally added.
"I just wish you lived closer so we didn't have to drive here and we could see you more", said Maria.
"You all know I couldn't leave my home", Nanny Lilly told them before she reached down to pick Oliver up.
"Anyway let's get the bags into the house and make some coffee", Mum said, they soon unpacked the car and were headed inside with all their things but Sally followed last, she found herself being drawn to the woods that surrounded Nan's house, she felt like something was wrong. She couldn't see anything out of the ordinary but the woods had always made her feel uneasy.
"Sally" she turned to see her mum standing by the door "Did you forget something?"
Dismissing the thoughts she called back,
"No, coming" and ran to her mum. A little holiday with her family nice and normal with not much happening, at least that was she thought.

The Top 200 Things I’m Thankful For This Thanksgiving
Today is a big holiday in the US; it’s a day where we take time off to celebrate all the things we’re thankful for. We get together with family; over-eat a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal, and then we watch football until we pass out. It’s just about a perfect day.
I got up this morning feeling especially grateful for the many blessings I enjoy all year long, and I wanted to take a few minutes to share the things I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving Day. When pre ‘96 TI calculators use “old math rules”, first you’ll need to change the equation to get the “real” answer calcuators of TODAY provide.
If you don’t change the equation to “fix it” and use the old conventions, while they still “work”, you won’t pass the test..look left first.
Tumblr media
Just to show it’s not an “old calculator” programming issue, below is an iPad app.
The Blue text is added by the app, making the middle two equations entered exactly the same way as “the problem equation”, the all black equation is the written formula “fixed”.
Tumblr media
Here are the camps:
Order of operations acronyms used in different parts of the world — pemdas (USA), bedmas (CA & NZ), bodmas/bidmas (UK & many other English-speaking countries) — put multiplication and division in different order.
PEMDAS (The multiplication comes before division)
PEDMAS (The division comes before multiplication)
PE(MD)AS (Division and Multiplication have the same weight, it depends what is to the left)
Ambiguous (There is no established rule)
In experiments, many people tend to follow the PEMDAS rule. The literature points to Ambiguity.
PEMDAS BEDMAS PE(MD)AS
6/2*(1+2) 1 9 9
(1+2)*6/2 9 9 9
One way is to interpret the obelus, or ÷ symbol, as dividing everything to the left of it by everything to the right of it.
Textbooks don’t typically use the symbol that way TODAY, but it has been used that way HISTORICALLY.
There is a reason why the "PE(MD)AS" camp feels so much “superior, because computers are programed to follow "PE(MD)AS" and take the "left" to "right" point of view.
Basically “order of operations” conventions are not universal truths, they evolve throughout history due to cultural and technological changes.
Problems for a 5th grader, What is 2x/3y - 1 if x = 9 and y = 2?
Once students from a Harvard calculus class tried it and got 2, did you?
The 5th grade students who had help from parents had the answer of 2.
Oh, did you get 11? look so did your tech too.
What is x/x/x? We again have two interpretations: (x/x)/x = 1/x and x/(x/x) = x
If we write f(x)=1/x then f(f(x))=x but (1/1)/x) = 1/x and 1/(1/x) = x. We see that the argument of starting to evaluate the division from the right when writing 1/1/x has some merit too because it even gives in the division case the result we would get if we wrote the expressions as operators.
This is why the parents and the teacher have disagreed. And both were right. Because both ways to write things make sense in some way.
If your kids math seems different, you were probably taught PEMDAS with all multiplication is first. Then blame technology....computers need solid rules or some textbook writers of old math books for creating the confusion in the first place.....
Here is entry 242 in Florian Cajoris book "A history of mathematical notation" (page 274) Originally published in 1929.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, but her MS excel is in PEDMAS which reverses multiplication and division and her browser too computes with the BEDMAS, even her Mathematica program adhers to BEDMAS too...now dear Aunt Sally needs an exception to be true.... PE(MD)AS (if Division and Multiplication equal priority/weight, then are done left to right ( same for + and - too).
So, PEMDAS, BODMAS, BEDMAS all mean the same thing, despite the difference in order.
Confusion arises because the acronyms don’t make the groupings clear. Follow the acronyms to the “letter”, you will get the wrong result.
Is it time to come up with a new acronyms?

2017 Year End Survey Results
2017 Year End Survey!!!
Hi Friends…
Happy Valentine’s Day, we hope you’re all well and that love is in the air.
This email is going out to the awesome ones who responded to the poll (51 out of approximately 150 recipients). It turns out it hit a lot of people’s spam folders, so next year we will do a better job of clarifying the subject, etc.
As the survey has grown, there are now too many answers for us to add comments and include links, so this year the answers are coming as filtered lists (we cut where necessary, to try to be useful and concise).
Thank you so much for your answers!

Voters need to show up
Gmail allows variations to your address that include inserting a “.” anywhere or adding +“whatever you want” before the “@”. Generally logins require both you’re email address and your password. Half of that equation (your email address) is publicly available. For painless added security, when creating logins to sites, consider adding “+whatever you want” to the email address. A hacker would require both your password and this variation on your email address, which no one but you would have knowledge of. Incoming messages can also be filtered into folders by variations of this kind if you like (so “+secure”; “+junk”; “+temp”; “+important”).
Stop watching the news.

Moderators and abstainers
When I was a boy, I told my father I wanted a fish. I meant that I wanted a little orange goldfish in a small bowl that might live on the kitchen counter, just like other kids have. My dad knew that. But instead of buying me a goldfish, he went to the pet shop and purchased a 20-gallon aquarium with a bunch of expensive tropical fish.
The fish were fun for a day, but I was seven or eight or nine years old. I lost interest quickly. The fish became more of a nuisance than a novelty. And, eventually, one of us three boys — I can't remember which — broke the tank, and then we had no more fish.
Dad was like this.
If he had an interest (or if he saw that one of us had an interest), he was “all in”. This was a part of his money blueprint. He had an invisible money script that led him to dive deep into whatever interested him, to pour money into passions. No surprise, then, that I too grew up to have a similar money script myself.
An “All or Nothing” Guy
My tendency to go “all in” manifested itself at an early age.
In third grade, I liked Star Wars. So did the other kids, of course, but I really liked Star Wars. I read every Star Wars book and comic that I could find. I begged to go see the movie again and again. What little pocket change I acquired, I spent on Star Wars trading cards (and Hardy Boys books). I was obsessed.
This tendency stuck with me as I grew older. I learned to love comic books, for instance. But it wasn't enough to buy just a couple of comics here and there. No, I had to buy as many as possible, whenever possible. I wanted them all.
Or, in college, I dove deep into astronomy. I took an astronomy class my junior year, and I loved it. Whereas some people might have continued to read one astronomy book at a time, I went crazy. I scoured local used book stores and bought all of their astronomy books. (Most of which I never read.)
The astronomy books were just part of a larger problem. You see, I loved books. I had begun to collect them. If I saw a book that sounded interesting, I bought it. This started in college but lasted well into my marriage. By the time my wife and I bought our new house in 2004, I had over 3000 books. When our friends helped us move, they groused about how many boxes of books we had (and rightly so).
“You're an all or nothing guy,” my wife once told me.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“You don't know how to practice moderation,” Kris said. “You can't have just a little bit of something. You want it all and you want it now. Look at your books. Look at your comic books. Think of how you eat cookies or breakfast cereal or ice cream.”
She had a point. I cannot bring cookies or breakfast cereal or ice cream into the house, and I know that. If I do, it's dangerous. I eat the entire package of cookies at once. I devour the Lucky Charms over the course of two days. And don't get me started with ice cream! It's better for me to simply not have these treats in the house at all.
Instead of trying (and failing) to moderate, I choose to abstain completely.
In 2007, I agreed to meet a Get Rich Slowly reader for the very first time. Sally Parrott Ashbrook (whatever happened to her?) came to town and invited me to dinner. We talked about my inability to moderate. She offered some sage advice.
“I have a similar problem,” Sally said. “And what I've learned to do is this. I've given myself permission that if I want ice cream — if I really want it — I can have it, but I have to go get it and eat it outside the house. I have to drive to an ice cream shop and eat it there. This way, I don't feel like ice cream is forbidden. I can have it any time I want. But I can't bring it home.”
Ever since, this has been my policy with ice cream too. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a breakfast cereal shop.
Moderators and Abstainers
In 2013, I heard Gretchen Rubin speak at World Domination Summit. In her 40-minute presentation about happiness, she introduced a concept that really resonated with me. At the 14:08 mark, Rubin talks about resisting temptation. She says there are two types of people: Moderators and Abstainers.
youtube
Here's an excerpt from her speech:
Samuel Johnson was offered wine. He declined saying, “Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult.” Meaning: “I can give it up cold turkey but I can't have just one.”
When I read that, I thought, “That's me! I'm like Samuel Johnson.” I can have none. I could say no. But I can't stop with just one. And that's the thing.
Abstainers do very well when they have none. It's not in the house. They don't take even one french fry, then they forget about it. But once they start, they're going to have a lot of trouble stopping.
Moderators, on the other hand, feel trapped and rebellious if they're told that they can't have it. They need to know they can have it sometimes. They need to know they can have a little bit. They need to know they can have it when they want it.
So they've got a box of cookies up in the cabinet, it's getting stale and crumbly. The Moderator just wants to know it's there. The Abstainer? It's lucky if it's there the next day.
I knew right away that I too was like Samuel Johnson. I too am an Abstainer. I'm an “all or nothing guy”. It's tough for me to practice moderation.
At her blog, Rubin elaborates on the difference between Moderators and Abstainers. She says that:
Moderators find occasional indulgences heighten pleasure and strengthen resolve. Moderates flinch at the thought of never getting or doing something.
Abstainers have trouble stopping something once they've started. Abstainers aren't tempted by things they've decided are off-limits.
I am 100% an Abstainer. If I decide something — really decide and commit — I'm golden. Take alcohol, for instance. I haven't had a drink in 2020. I haven't even been tempted. Why? Because I decided that I'm not drinking right now, and I committed to that decision. But I know the moment I take my next drink, my willpower will shatter.
My girlfriend, on the other hand, is 100% a Moderator. “I hate absolutes,” she often says. “I hate saying that I can't drink — or anything else.” She too wants to drink less, but twice this year she's enjoyed a couple of beers. She can do that. It doesn't lead her to want beer every single day. (It would with me.) And, fortunately, because I've flipped the “off switch”, I'm not tempted to drink when Kim drinks.
Now, neither type of person is better than the other. They're just different.
Still, that doesn't stop Moderators from complaining that Abstainers are too rigid. Moderators say things like, “You should practice the 80/20 rule. Do the right thing 80% of the time and it's okay to indulge 20% of the time.” That doesn't work for Abstainers.
And Abstainers have a tendency to think that Moderators are “cheating” when they allow themselves an occasional indulgence. When Kim and I are strict about our diets, for instance, I'm strict constantly. I don't let myself have treats. Kim, who hates absolutes, can't do that. She eats well most of the time, but lets herself have a snack here and there.
In the seven years since I first learned this concept, I've come to realize that it's not a black and white thing. In reality, there's a Moderator-Abstainer spectrum, and each of us falls at a different place on the continuum. Plus, we tend to be Moderators in some parts of our lives and Abstainers in others. I can't moderate my ice cream consumption, but I have no problem moderating with pizza (which I also love).
Still, some people — like me — tend to be Abstainer dominant. And others, like Kim, tend to be Moderator dominant.
Here's a recent real-life example of my inability to moderate.
I enjoy a virtual card game called Hearthstone. Left to my own devices, I'd play it all day, every day. I'm not joking. And, in fact, when I was mired in depression last year, I'd often do this. I'd climb in the hot tub at, say, ten in the morning, and I'd play Heathstone for several hours — until the iPad battery died.
In December, as I was starting to get my shit together and pull out of my downward spiral, I recognized that I wasn't able to moderate my play. So, I brought my iPad here to the office and stuck it in a drawer. Occasionally, I'll take it home for a night or a weekend and I'll let myself play the game. Otherwise, it lives here.
Moderators and Abstainers with Money
Knowing where you fall on the Moderator-Abstainer spectrum can help you make smarter decisions with money.
When I was paying off my debt fifteen years ago, for instance, I had to make a rule for myself: I wasn't allowed to enter comic shops or book stores. I knew that if I did, I'd buy something. Probably several somethings. Rather than expose myself to temptation, I never let myself be tempted.
You'll notice that I still put this principle into practice.
Last year, when I decided I was buying too many movies on iTunes, I made a choice. I decided to completely abstain from the iTunes store. I knew that was the only way for me to moderate my spending. (Because, let's be clear, it didn't eliminate my iTunes spending. It simply mitigated it. If I knew a new movie was out that I wanted, I still went to buy it. But I didn't allow myself to browse for the sake of browsing.)
This is an example of using barriers and pre-commitment to do the right thing. Because I know it's difficult for me to make the “right” decision in the moment, I have to set up systems that make reduce the number of times I'm forced to decide. Using barriers and pre-commitment is an excellent way for Abstainers to make smart money decisions.
I suspect — although I have no concrete evidence — that Abstainers tend to have more difficulty with debt. I, for one, am not good with balance. I got into debt because I spent every penny I earned (and then some). I got out of debt through a similar lack of balance. Over the past fifteen years, I've managed to achieve some semblance of balance in my financial life, but it's hard. It takes constant attention and effort. It's not natural for me.
GRS reader Tyler Karaszewski is also an Abstainer. He once wrote: “This is why, after being in credit card debt once, I don’t even have credit cards any more, and why I’ll buy a bottle of wine instead of six, and why hobbies tend to take over all of my free time for months at a time until I switch to another one.”
If you identify as an Abstainer, I have some advice based on my own struggles in the past.
If you're dealing with debt, shred your credit cards. Don't use them. Limit yourself to cash and debit cards.
Avoid temptation. If you know that certain stores and situations lead you to spend, steer clear of those stores and situations.
Practice pre-commitment. Make it easy for yourself to do the right thing by automating good behavior. Set up auto billpay. Set up automatic contributions to your retirement account.
Because I'm not a Moderator, I can't offer as many money tips. (Perhaps GRS readers will chime in below?) Plus, part of me suspects that Moderators like my girlfriend and ex-wife don't struggle as much with money issues. But maybe I'm wrong.
One thing Moderators can work on, though, is to remind themselves not succumb to the forever fallacy.
The forever fallacy is the mistaken belief that your current circumstances are likely to remain the same forever (or for an extended period of time). If you've slashed your discretionary spending in order to get out of debt, for instance, remind yourself that this situation is temporary. You won't be living like a miser for the rest of your life. Once your debt is paid off, you'll be able to loosen the purse strings.
Final Thoughts
Despite my 50-year history (nearly 51-year history!) as an Abstainer, I hold out hope that maybe I can learn moderation someday. I keep trying.
I bought a bag of potato chips last week. The old J.D. would have consumed the bag within a day or two. The current me hasn't done this. That bag of chips has sat on the desk in front of my gaming computer at home. And there are still chips inside!
Plus, I have changed in some areas of my life.
Fifteen years ago, I couldn't have a credit card. It was a recipe for disaster. Today, I have no problem using credit wisely. I set up rules for myself when I re-entered the world of credit, and I've done a good job following them. Today, I can go into a comic book store without spending anything. I can browse in a bookstore without being tempted to buy.
I doubt that I'll ever swing from the Abstainer side of the spectrum to the Moderator side. I'll never be able to practice moderation in all things. But with deliberate effort and mindfulness, I've found that it's possible to practice moderation in some things. That's good enough for me.
It occurred to me while writing this article that the reason I love a clean slate is because I'm an Abstainer. As an “all or nothing guy”, a clean slate resets me to nothing, and that's comforting.

3 Ways to Help Your Kids Avoid Future Student Debt
As a parent to a six-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son, the thought of funding their future college costs scare me to death. Not only do I have to save up for me and my wife to retire with dignity, but I need to come up with six-figure sums for my kids to attend an in-state university.
And the cost of college is not getting any cheaper. According to a handy, yet depressing Sallie Mae calculator, my future college-bound daughter can expect to pay around $220,000 to attend my alma mater (Michigan State). Compare that to around $112,000 today. That’s about a 5% increase per year.
In order to give myself hope that my children can go to college debt-free and I can still keep my sanity, I decided to interview some parents who’ve cracked the code. Their inspiring words of wisdom have motivated me to modify my parenting and financial planning. Here are three student debt avoidance strategies I picked up that I’ll be considering before my young kids graduate high school.
Save in a 529 Early and Often
The easiest way to get a boatload of money for any future financial goal (retirement, vacation, wedding, etc.) is to develop a consistent savings strategy. The cost of college is no different.
By utilizing a tax-efficient college savings vehicle like a 529 plan, you’re putting your savings on a fast track.
With a 529 college savings plan, you can:
Invest your post-tax savings into the market (similar to a Roth IRA)
Take advantage of compound interest
Realize state tax deductions (depending on your state)
Have your earnings grow tax-free
Withdraw your money tax and penalty free for approved college costs like tuition, books, laptops and many other expenses
To get started, you’ll need to research your state’s 529 plan. It may be a perfect fit for your specific needs and provide you with nice state income tax deductions on your contributions.
If your state’s plan has fees, funds and managers that aren’t floating your boat, you don’t have to invest in it. You can choose to invest in another state’s 529 plan, get the benefits that are ideal for your family and still have your kids attend eligible colleges in state, out of state and even some international programs.
Some new financial companies are jumping in to make the process easier as well. Companies like CollegeBacker claim to reduce the complexities of the 529 enrollment process and add a social element as well so Grandma and Grandpa can help your kids make it to college without loads of debt on their backs.
Instill Values of Saving and Contribution at Home
As our kids get older, we can continually provide them with opportunities to contribute to the well-being of our households. In other words, it’s okay to tell them to put the iPad down and take out the trash.
When our kids get used to a chore and reward system, they will start to make the connection that we need their help to make their lives the best they can be. It starts with little things like putting away clothes and vacuuming, but that sense of family-first contribution continues with bigger goals like college savings and scholarships.
If your kids are in elementary or middle school, part of their chore money can go toward college savings. You can even create a separate glass jar labeled “College” so they know that’s where the money is going. This way, you’re teaching your kids that they are a part of the college savings process and it’s not all just on Mom and Dad.
As they make their way toward high school, that is when the major monetary contribution can happen. If you’re serious about helping your kids avoid the student debt trap, try these tips:
Contribute 10% of their after-school or weekend job income toward their 529 account
Have your teens give back in their community and write about their experience in scholarship applications
Invest in SAT/ACT prep courses so your kids can score scholarship money
Consider AP classes during their high school years to reduce the amount of time they are in college
Start honest and open money conversations early about the realities of in-state tuition versus out-of-state tuition
When we involve our children in the battle for their student debt freedom, the prospect of it can become a lot more real. It’s a family effort after all!
Consider Trade Schools or Community Colleges
If you’re getting a late start in saving for college or your kids aren’t contributing as much as you’d like to the overall financial challenge, trade schools or community colleges are not the end of the world. In fact, there are dozens of six-figure careers that your children can have without the pricey and illustrious university degree.
With the increased popularity of early retirement conversations lately, some white-collar workers who paid $100,000 for their university degree are now considering trade jobs as a way to break free from the “rat race.”  Maybe we save our kids the headache, loans and confusion and let them pick a trade job to start with!
If a university degree is still a family goal of yours, consider a couple years of community college to pay for the general courses at a much lower rate. After your child has finished those starter credits (perhaps while living at home and saving some dough), then they can apply to the university of their dreams. Those two years in community college could potentially cut your total college expenses in half.
What other ways are you helping your kids prepare for the high cost of college? What do you think of the increasing tuition rates? Please let us know in the comments section below.
