Next year I hope to be more prepared for this amazing day. I'm a Sailor Moon fan and I hate I couldn't do a review of the manga series like I wanted to, but I will not have all the them with me until next August. I will more than likely do a podcast episode once I have finished the series.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL SAILOR MOON DAY!

I almost missed it, believe it or not.

So, yeah, it's technically the second Sailor Moon Day of the year (the first being June 30, Usagi's birthday) But I would like to tell you about my past with the Pretty Guardians.

I started watching Sailor Moon during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020. The main culprit that got me watching the show was my father, who claimed to watch it back in the 90's. Other than that, I was mostly just drawn in by the art design.

And the fandom.

But I must plead guilty as charged; I have not watched a single episode of Sailor Moon in quite some time. It would have to have been at least a couple months ago. And last time I checked, I was just getting to know Uranus and Neptune, so I still have ways away.

Before the pandemic, I had been no stranger to Sailor Moon. But prior to watching it, I just knew it as "that show my dad really liked back in the 90's" (And in case you're wondering, his favorite was Sailor Mercury.)

However, once I started watching it, I was hooked. I aimed to watch it every Saturday afternoon. I originally just did it through online torrent sites, but once I got the Season 1 DVDs from VIZ Media, (Yes, I watch the dub) I was unstoppable. -- It was the beginning of something new.

I was a SpongeBob kid growing up. Still love SpongeBob, even after the controversial post-movie decisions, but Sailor Moon was the moment when I started to transition. I started seeing myself in the characters, initially through Sailor Venus, but also through Sailor Moon herself. I saw a bit of myself in all of them.

The fact that a then-16-year old boy could see parts of himself in a group of 14-year old girls that don't even exist, I guess, is a testament to the power of the Sailor Guardians.

And for that, I am forever grateful. Happy Sailor Moon Day.
