This thing (the Bajoran lightship/solar sailor from the DS9 episode "Explorers") was genuinely one of the most beautiful ships Star Trek ever designed. Not to mention one of the most romantic and evocative. You look at her and you immediately feel the wonder of space.

Why is it that space vessels are ships and not planes? It's always spaceSHIP, starSHIP, rocketSHIP. Never plane.
There's an easy, obvious argument that they move more like planes, navigating in 3 dimensions, not 2. Using engines not sails.
Still, they're always ships. Always sailing, never flying.
Is it just the romance? The twin magic of adventure mirroring sailing the seas and... sailing the stars? Ships passing in the night, figuratively and literally?
My brain is obsessing over this little language anomaly lately

Even with a bunch of more realistic space movies like The Martian and Interstellar, the list of realistic interplanetary spaceships in movies still kind of only has two entries, Discovery-1 from 2001: A Spacy Odyssey, and Venture Star from Avatar.

With the caveat that the more realistic version of Discovery was the concept art version with the radiators.

Abandoned on a desert planet for nearly two centuries, the Legacy takes flight once again, her solar sails tasting the long absent light of a star.
Idk, lol. Not my best work, but I liked how it turned out. So have this.
Bonus earlier iteration:

trying to figure out hsr's timeline is just pepesilvia.jpeg
when dates are labeled "AE" does that mean the WHOLE amber era, e.g. 2157 AE is the 2157th amber era, which itself lasted anywhere from 76 to 240 years?
was the swarm disaster in the 1300s AE ~770 whole ass amber eras ago (e.g. 60,000-180,000 years ago) from the present in 2157 AE, because that is an insane length of time?
the xianzhou fleet set sail in search of Yaoshi ~8000 years ago (whose years in what system???), and Yaoshi didn't exist during the swarm disaster, so is there just a huge gap between 60k-180k years ago & 8k years ago?
but the founding of the IPC is listed as occurring btw 1357-1387 AE, involving the same people who were presumably mortal, pre-Yaoshi, and didn't live for thousands of years, so that HAS to be measured as 30 years and not 30 amber eras?
but also the IPC claims one of those people contemporary to the swarm disaster is definitely still alive??? i mean sure they could mean it symbolically or sth, but man
man.
i understand the history fictionologists now. i too am about to start just making shit up

I've really become obsessed with the Orion Drive spacecraft concept and continue to develop different ideas for it. This one is envisioned as a more personal spacecraft for a character for my Centauri universe which in my mind is evolving into an anthology of sorts. I call it the Wabash Cannonball as I imagine it traveling through space like a powerful 19th century train.
Along with being relatively smaller than the other Orion Drive ships I designed, I gave this ship three unique features. The first is that it uses a system called "dusty plasma radiators" for heat regulation. It works using conductive plasma manipulated by magnetic fields to heat up dust particles and cycle them out of the ship and back in. This adds to the steam engine vibe I was going for this ship. The second is it's equipped with a diffracting solar sail that's a mile in diameter for initial movement to a safe distance (aided by powerful laser arrays on planetary surfaces) before retracting and letting the Orion drive take over. Is is also unfurled to capture sunlight of an approaching star during it's deceleration procedure. The third is that habitable module at the front of the craft is detachable and equipped with fusion rockets in case of emergencies.
Other features are two space planes for planetary entry, RCS thrusters for maneuvering, several onboard maintenance drones for making repairs inside and outside the ship, and 16 turrets with projectile and laser weapon system for self defense.
I'm going to try to depict the character I imagine piloting this ship next as I already finished my Thanksgiving piece (just waiting for Thanksgiving day).
As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

Sailing starship What if ?? Sailing boats became spaceships ? I tried to image what it would look like. The idea came from the begining of the book Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle (1963) where a sailing starship recover a bottle containing the story of a man which has landed on the Planet of the Apes.
SPOILER:
(it's funny because at the end, we discover that the peoples reading the story are Apes saying it's a fiction, it's not possible to have an intelligent human)
