Disneyland Secret #429
There is a boat hierarchy when sailing the waters in Disneyland, to keep everyone and every boat safe. The sailing Ship Columbia has the right of way at all times, followed by the Mark Twain, the raft used to cross the river and finally all canoes. The smaller boats are more manageable and can make the changes in the water needed for the big boats, where the big boats can not necessarily see everything that is in the water.

Disneyland developed a nighttime spectacular in 1987 that featured 999 ghosts and skeletons from the Haunted Mansion that took over Tom Sawyer Island to entertain crowds along the Rivers of America five years before “Fantasmic”.
Tumblr media
Disneyland consultant Don Dorsey discussed the history of the shelved Haunted Mansion-themed nighttime spectacular during the Magic After Dark panel at the D23 fan event at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Tumblr media
Concept art developed for the Haunted Mansion-themed nighttime spectacular shows ghosts pouring out of the classic dark ride and flowing over the Rivers of America onto Tom Sawyer Island in a spectral rainbow.
Tumblr media
In a spooky castle scene, headless knights hoisted a coffin into the air as ghost brides lingered amid scattered skeletons.
Tumblr media
Pirates fought with swords in the masts of a ghostly version of the Sailing Ship Columbia as fireworks exploded near the stern in another scene developed for the nighttime spectacular.
Tumblr media
The finale featured the Chernabog villain from “Fantasia” looming overhead as flames engulfed the waters below.
“Everybody thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be amazing,’” Dorsey said during the D23 panel presentation. “Then it got shelved for a period of time for Disneyland’s 35th.”
After the 35th anniversary celebration in 1990, attention turned to another nighttime spectacular involving water and fireworks that ultimately ended up occupying the same spot on Disneyland’s Rivers of America.
“Fantasmic” debuted in 1992

In today's 9th door I have not only one enchanting beauty for you, there are two of them, in a friendly battle - The Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain
Tumblr media
Lady Washington, left, and Hawaiian Chieftain in a battle
More about them here:
The Brig Lady Washington ( the original ship) was built around 1780 in Massachusetts as a merchant ship. The sloop was named after Martha Washington, but often appears in contemporary documents simply as Washington. In 1787, the ship was acquired by the investor group Bullfinch, Barrell & Company and, under Captain Robert Gray, accompanied the Columbia under Captain John Kendrick on its voyage around the world from Boston to the North American west coast from September 1787. The two ships were lost in a storm and the Lady Washington reached Oregon a week before the Columbia. She was thus the first US ship to reach the west coast. The ships were involved in the fur trade with the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast and then sailed on to Guangzhou in China. There, the commanders swapped vessels and the Lady Washington remained in the Pacific. Together with the Grace, she reached the island of Kii-Ōshima in 1791, where she established the first contact between the United States and Japan, while the Columbia returned to Boston on a westerly course in August 1790.
Hawaiian Chieftain is the name of a Square Topsail Ketch briefly known as the Spirit of Larinda. Built in 1988 in Lahaina on the island of Maui, the Hawaiian Chieftain is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional design. She is unique with the rig of a 19th-century trading vessel and a modern triple keel, shallow draft hull. Drawing only 5.5 feet (1.7 m), she is highly maneuverable in shallow waters.

Disneyland's keel boat Gullywhumper, 1964.
The Gullywhumper faithfully plied the Rivers of America around Tom Sawyer's Island for 42 years until one evening in May 1997, when the boat began to rock side to side. It capsized, dumping a full boatload of passengers into the river, leaving several with minor injuries. The boat was removed for inspection and neither it nor its companion craft the Bertha Mae returned for operation.
Instead, the Gullywhumper returned to Rivers of America as a prop and was moored on Tom Sawyer Island where passengers on the Davy Crockett Canoes, the Sailing Ship Columbia, and the Mark Twain Riverboat could see it while passing. Eventually, hull damage caused the boat to flood and sink, and it was finally removed from Disneyland in April 2009.
