I don't know offhand how many attractions operate on/in WDW's river, but in Disneyland there are up to four:
Rafts to Tom Sawyer Island (and the Island itself--a great playground to burn off that churro energy)
Mark Twain
S.S. Columbia
Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
If WDW is about the same, then they're cutting the attraction count in half by replacing the river and island with two Cars rides.
Make it make sense.
(Actually I know what the rationale is--Cars merchandise is a billion-dollar industry.)
I've been seeing a frustrating amount of "but having a big river in the park is just wasted space, when you could have another ride there!" sentiment.
First of all, there very much ARE rides on that river! Relaxing, high capacity ones too.
Second: if you want to have a THEME park, you gotta leave space for THEME!
Ride upon ride atop each other is the Six Flags model. I actually enjoy Six Flags, but that's not what Disney is known for or why it made a name for itself.

Of interest to @jimstares, today marks the 49th anniversary of the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes at Disneyland.
Granted, the canoes were there since 1956, but the “Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes” name came into being in 1971. They were the “Indian War Canoes” from 1956-1971. Thank goodness for the name change.
But as I know you were a Canoe Guide, I thought this would be a good thing to point out.

I know WDWNT isn’t the best source of information, but this article isn’t speculation. And I thought it would be of interest to @jimstares.
I cannot wait to visit again, but I have to. I don’t get vacation time again until I hit my anniversary at work next month, and I don’t want to visit during peak season when crowds are large (I don’t think they’re at full capacity yet, so maybe it wouldn’t be a bad time to go, but there’s a LOT of pent-up demand and with having to make a reservation, I think it’s better to wait).
I could also see saving up and spending a week in Walt Disney World instead. While I’ve been there several times, it’s less familiar to me. Going to Disneyland feels like going home. Which is a good thing. But Walt Disney World feels more like a (very exhausting) vacation. So I don’t know which I will do next.

Hey @zone34timeout started it! ;-) That said, I believe that’s Henry who was the founder of Bear Country (est. 1972) which was later named Critter Country at the opening of Splash Mountain. I believe Henry lost their leadership position at that time.
Trivia - What is the only attraction that’s been active in every iteration of Critter Country (Indian Village / Frounterland / Bear Country / Critter Country)?  -  -  -  -  - Considering who asked the question those who know me have probably figured it out, but yes, it’s the best attraction in the Park. Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes!
