In the early hours of February 6, an earthquake rippled within the Middle East that has deeply impacted Türkiye and Syria. As most of us have already seen, this tragedy has taken away many lives, and has created a great devastation to all the cities infrastructures. The amount of loss is being immensely felt worldwide, and many have contributed generously. And as part of my contribution I will be auctioning one of my artworks (عطر الورد) “The Perfume a Rose,” 2019 c. Drawing inspiinfrom my own struggles, I constructed an Islamic Geometric Pattern, and used the color of a red rose to symbolize its delicate yet strong nature. I then lined it with gold watercolor, so when illuminated by the sun; it is reminiscent of when beads of water glimmer brightly on rose petals just at the sunlight hits it. Light (نور) in the Islamic tradition represents Allah’s (s) presence for when darkness takes over. And the rose despite facing many adversities is able to withstand the blow, and spread its seeds for a new dawn of spring. I pray that both Türkiye and Syria will rise from this calamity, I have the sincere faith in Allah (s) that it will. Please recite Al-Fātiḥa for the dearly departed, and for those who are suffering.
