The descriptions in this book are soooo funny. I can see where he's coming from and now that I've read a lot have an idea of what authors he's probably read and is riffing off but there are NO!!! citations.....just yaoi vibes.

The Philip descriptions are sending me bc on one hand they're not like, entirely wrong (he WAS anxious and paranoid at this era and often sickly and moody) but he's constantly portrayed in the anglo-norman source way as like this unreasonable weak prissy type overwhelmed by his pushy seme Richard which lines up with how some 20thc historians have characterized him. But also it's sOOO unfair XD he had his reasons.

on the other there are some weird statements like the "failed to learn Latin" that's ???? Ive never heard that (Rigord certainly would NOT have mentioned it). It's so funny bc Flori mentions a source where Richard also was criticized for needing a Latin translator. Imagining the two of them according to this depiction looking at a document too stubborn to call their translators and acting like they know what they're talking about.

Anyways unrelated but the movie IS great.....also 800 years later it seems people are still recreating the same toxic familial dynamics in families of power who have legends and failed-legends by nature of Dynasties, or perhaps the Dynasties and story around it (the ones who become distant legends larger than life, the ones who try but whose images become marred) is how we view that familial conflict. When the cease-fire in Gaza went into effect earlier this week, the joy across the conflict line was palpable from 6,000 miles away. Although it is unlikely that complicated three-phase deal will ever be fully implemented, it will save lives, bring hostages home, and provide Palestinians in Gaza with much-needed humanitarian aid. The initial hostage and prisoner release also provides a moment to reflect on the broader consequences of the war. Among the most striking is how the conflict has not just altered the trajectories of Israeli and Palestinian societies but in important ways forced them into reverse.

No doubt, Hamas has notched a number of notable achievements since it launched the onslaught it called Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on Oct. 7, 2023. The group drew the IDF into a ferocious fight in the Gaza Strip that has compromised the international legitimacy of Israel’s military and the state it defends. And not since the announcement of the Clinton Parameters and the effort to rescue the Oslo process at the Egyptian resort town of Taba in early 2001 has the Palestinian question been front and center in Middle Eastern and international politics.

At the same time, when Hamas sent its fighters over and through the fence that separates Israel from the Gaza Strip, they set the Palestinian search for justice back at least a generation, if not more. There was a time, not long ago, when it was possible for people to imagine a Palestinian state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In the years since the peace process irretrievably faltered, some observers had come to believe that the present “one-state reality,” encompassing the Palestinian areas plus Israel, would likely lead to a “one-state solution” in which Palestinians and Israelis live together. Regardless of the real-world prospects of either outcome, Hamas’s genocidal fever dream of liberating Palestine—from Metula to Eilat and from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea—which the group sought to make reality 15 months ago, has rendered both the one-state and two-state solutions impossible.

Add to Hamas’s bloodlust the international outcry over what Israelis regard to be righteous self-defense, and fewer and fewer of them are now willing to believe that Palestinian nationalism and Zionism can be reconciled. Palestinians may have a right to a state, but given the asymmetries of power that exist, Israelis have the capacity to prevent them from exercising it. After Oct. 7, that seems likelier than ever.

Even while Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are filled with joy over the cease-fire, they remain adrift, confronted with two unenviable political choices: the Palestinian Authority (PA)—a corrupt, repressive, and illegitimate vessel of another era that is irrelevant to the current predicaments of the people whom it is supposed to represent—or Hamas. Even with their limited mandate, the PA’s leaders seem incapable of accomplishing pretty much anything other than remaining in power. Hamas is an undesirable alternative. Its popularity waxes during conflict with Israel and wanes when the reality of life under the boot of the group’s cadres becomes clear to the Palestinians who must endure it. It is hard not to conclude from the last two decades that Hamas’s sacralized claims to resistance has brought Palestinians nothing but more pain and more grief. Yes, there is renewed international sympathy for the Palestinian cause, but the world has long recognized the importance of justice for Palestinians with little tangibly to show for it.

There may actually be other, better options for Palestinians. In distinct contrast to the PA and Hamas, there is a vibrant grassroots movement of Palestinians that is seeking new means of representation and leveraging the past 15 months of bloodshed to deepen the connections between the Palestinian struggle and international networks of progressives, NGOs, humanitarians, and academics. It is an interesting phenomenon, and perhaps an alternative to the PA and Hamas will emerge from this activism. But a significant amount of energy of these groups seems devoted more to Israel’s delegitimization than to any actual effort to forge a new Palestinian political reality. It is also an elite game. Average Palestinians have no such privilege or choice. They are forced between two factions that claim to be the expressions of the Palestinian nationalism but have done little to advance their cause, at times even profiting from their people’s suffering.

Given the destruction of Gaza and the existential nature of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians that Hamas’s onslaught and the Israeli response to it highlighted, the lasting and most tangible achievement of that attack may very well be the permanent statelessness of the Palestinian people.

For Israelis, the days of “bourgeois Israel” are over. The Israel of the Nike Store, fancy bicycle studios, Maseratis prowling the Ayalon Freeway, and glass towers built on the power of Silicon Wadi IPOs will, of course, remain, but there has been a vibe shift among Jewish citizens of Israel. The attacks on southern kibbutzim and towns 15 months ago vaulted Israel back to another time—one of vulnerability and uncertainty. The incomprehensible hostility of the world around Israelis and beyond, especially among governments and publics in the West, added to the collective shock.

Israelis believed that they had overcome their isolation of the past. Yet so strong and striking was the negative sentiment of the global elite toward a wounded Israel that it was as if U.N. Resolution 3379, which determined Zionism to be a form of racism, had never been repealed. In the coming years, Israel will confront even more hostility from influential—but not necessarily powerful—actors within the U.N. system and the NGO world who have demonstrated themselves to be part of a broad anti-Zionist front. Even though Israel enjoys diplomatic relations with most of the world, the war in Gaza has reopened the question of its global acceptance and legitimacy.

Uncomfortable as it may be, there are more discernible consequences of the war than the hostility of U.N. bureaucrats, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and governments from Ireland to Spain. It seems likely that Israel is too well integrated into the global economy—especially its high-tech and health sectors—for the call to boycott, divest, and sanction to succeed. But Israelis, whose security has been ensured and economic development boosted with the help of U.S. subventions, will have to grapple with higher defense budgets and the hostility of a not insignificant segment of the Democratic Party whose lawmakers will be asked to continue security assistance for Israel. That will not matter when Republicans control the executive branch and Congress, but Democrats will not be in the wilderness forever, and the IDF operations in Gaza that over the last 15 months killed more than 47,000 Palestinians (according to Palestinian health authorities in Gaza) have made an impression on Capitol Hill. The bipartisan consensus around support for Israeli security was already weakening when Hamas attacked; Israel’s ferocious reaction to Oct. 7 may very well have broken it.

What does this say about the future for Israelis and Palestinians? Almost nothing. There were more than a few sages who declared at the outset of the war “from crisis comes opportunity.” That sounds nice, but those are just words. The most likely outcome of the war was always going to be something closer to the status quo that existed on Oct. 6, 2023, than some promising change that improved the prospects for peace. As the release of Gonen, Damari, and Steinbrecher made abundantly clear, Hamas remains very much in power in Gaza, which portends a tighter Israeli blockade on the territory and periodic spasms of great violence. All the while, Palestinians and Israelis will remain further away from their national goals than they have been in decades.

exclusively projectors with a defined identity connected to the throat and no other definition. you need to talk through your decisions with others to receive clarity. steer towards what brings you joy.

exclusively projectors with ajna connected to the head or throat OR head, ajna, and throat all connected. you are tuned into sensory information of all that is around you. you also do well to talk to others to receive clarity.

lunar

exclusively reflectors. before you make a final decision spend at least one lunar cycle contemplating and gaining others advice. be attentive to your environment, and how the environment makes you feel. be patient in the meantime.

A tiny bit of sun came out in Amsterdam, how lovely. 🥰😘

It had me thinking how with one tiny sperm, the female body amplifies this beautiful energy and pieces together a whole human from inside her own body. A woman’s (and other female-bodied person’s) role at this time is to become more responsible for the energy being penetrated into her, including what she focuses on and gives her attention to, because she will eventually give birth to “it,” whether a child, the condition of her health, the quality of her psyche, or the state of the world.

So many female bodies from many timelines have been penetrated mindlessly or hurriedly—with force, impatience, anger, pain, deception, resentment, hatred, disgust, extraction, etc. This is a kind of war we don’t talk about.

You must stop consenting to all war happening with the female line.

Like when getting a Pap smear, your nurse or doctor needs to ask you for permission to enter your body, and not enter with no regard for your readiness. It’s always the subtlest things that have the greatest cellular and metaphysical impact, you see.

In other words, you must begin to awaken to the truth of what is really happening inside, including harm you say about your body when no one is looking. Because eventually you give birth to it in the external world. That’s the metaphysics of what it means to be female. 🙏🏿

We can no longer blame men. We can no longer blame the patriarchy. We can no longer blame colonialism or any other system.

We are the ones who have been colluding with them all. Our great great grandmothers were in agreement with them. And we have to been playing small, like we are not powerful in our female bodies.

The key code to mastering this reality is Learning how to let go but also learning how to grieve deeply. Both can be excruciating. How lovely 🫀

The Winter Solstice

When is Yule?

Being one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world, it occurs on the day of the winter solstice, which falls on December 21st, 2024. Other times it will fall on the 22nd or 23rd.

What does Yule mean?

"Yule" is a celebration of the darkest day or longest night of the year, where one awaits the return of the sun. It is a liminal period; a time of reflection and introspection, and a time of expressing gratitude.

Who does Yule celebrate?

One might worship sun or wintertime gods and goddesses. This includes "Old Mother Winter" (Frau Holle), Germanic Goddess of winter, death, and regeneration; Frigga, Norse Goddess of love, marriage, and motherhood (who sacralized mistletoe); Cailleach, Greek Goddess of cold and wind; Skadi, Norse Goddess of winter, mountains, and skiing; and Demeter, Greek Goddess of agriculture who refused to let anything grow in the winter season.

YULE TRADITIONS

Utilize gemstones that will cleanse and renew your sacred space for the upcoming year, such as selenite, black tourmaline, tanzanite, amethyst, and clear quartz.

Work with wintery spices and flowers that promote healing and longevity, like cinnamon, cloves, ivy, saffron, and poinsettias. These are traditional "holiday cheer" flora that can be used, gifted, and appreciated regardless of religion/spirituality. Spices like cinnamon and cloves are also antioxidants/analgesics that help fight off pain and infections - so load up your hot cocoa!

Enjoy the comfort of warm, hearty foods to prepare for dark and cold days, like porridges, root vegetable stews, and bread. If you eat meat, enjoy smoked salmon, ham, or duck as a good source of protein and warmth.

Decorate and dress yourself in elegant greens, whites, silver, and gold.

Incorporate animal imagery (e.g., figurines, photographs, drawings, et cetera) of goats and boars - traditional animals of sacrifice - and reindeer and cats, clever animals associated with magic, with the latter representing punishment and reward.

YULE ACTIVITIES

Sip on a hot drink. Peppermint tea, hot cocoa, warm cider, spiced chocolate, anything you desire!

Take a ritual bath. Add mint leaves, citrus peels, a dash of cinnamon, a bit of balsam essential oil, and powdered milk to your bath.

Burn candles. Objects aflame represent gratitude for the sun and its warmth, so relax underneath the candlelight.

Decorate an evergreen tree. Traditionally a pagan custom, adorn a real or artificial tree with soft lights, pinecones, candles, fruits, and other ornaments.

Decorate and burn a yule log. Make the yule log(s) 12 days before, and burn it for 12 days starting on the evening of the solstice. Carve in runes and adorn it with mistletoe and holly!

Wassail. Drink from a wassail bowl or cup, dance around, carol, and merry-make! Traditionally performed in an orchard with a large gathering, you are free to just simply enjoy yourself and perform wherever you see fit. This is usually done on the final night of Yule.

Give gifts. Preferably handmade or locally made . . . or at least a meaningful purchase . . . exchange gifts with your loved ones.

Make a Yule altar. Center it with a yule log (before the burning) and icons of a yuletide god/goddess of your choice. Decorate around with candles, holly, mistletoe, poinsettias, dried fruits, and green and silver decor.

SPEAK the life of the successful author. DO the works and actions of the day of the successful author. KNOW the HEART and world of the author; Emit the energies and FEELING from the HEART of the author. KNOW it to be real, KNOW it to be your I AM. I AM the successful author and all parts of my BEING is. I AM is the resurrection and I AM begins to stem all experience and all chakras and creation of life and your entirety. You become it in every facet of yourself. What you begin to imagine and create. What you begin to see from, think from. Your true identity and all things flow in accordance. It begins within your consciousness and then through the whole human experience, it is activated.

HEART 𑁍 NUMBER 4, LOVING: feeling it within my heart, as truth, the physical needed to create the frequency. The frequency beginning within your heart and body. Emitting it from your body. Loving this world and self. Loving the experience of it from speaking it, being it, seeing it, feeling it, knowing it as your identify and life. You can only attract in accordance to the frequency you’re in and it begins within your heart. You enjoy feeling and loving this ideal

THROAT 𑁍 NUMBER 5, SPEAKING IT: what you say to be true, is. Speaking it, experiencing it, speaking it to yourself and in real life as you are really doing it, only experiencing it as real truth in your world, speaking it into existence. CROWN 𑁍 NUMBER 7, KNOWING IT: in your body but really your mind, consciousness: the only place of actual existence. What your mind KNOWS to be true. What your consciousness and subconscious KNOWS and believes to be true. Knows to be true, to you, because of you

Every PART of YOU is touched with Neville’s teachings and all things required to make up existence. “I see abundance everywhere (that makes up my daily life.) I see it in my minds eye and in my surrounding world. I see it in my 4D and my 3D. I choose to SEE it in my 3D world despite my old self fighting me. I see abundance everywhere in my life and within me. In my bank, my home, my possessions, my opportunities, my luxuries, being able TO DO anything I want. I ENJOY this FEELING and LIVING this NOW, SEEING it all around me, experiencing it. I see wealth.” This is all I can see. I do not feel stuck, trapped, limited.

𑁍 5th: Throat, I SPEAK

“I speak it into the 4D world and speak it within my 3D world as I AM LIVING it. No one and nothing else can speak anything into my world and existence but me. I only can speak about my wonderful life and can only speak about my ideal world and life as it’s the only thing of existence and all I can SEE, FEEL, DO, LOVE, and enjoy. I speak wondrous things into my life. I speak about my new resources and lifestyle. I speak about my wealth, love, comfort, security and gratitude. I speak about my beautiful new world and self concept. I SEE IT, KNOW IT, FEEL IT, and DO walk it. I speak ONLY about my life WITH wealth, love, comfort. I surround my self with love and comfort.” This is ALL I CAN speak of because it’s the only thing of existence for me to SEE. All I allow myself to see is my ideal and myself living as the ideal, doing all things I wanted, loving it, knowing it.

𑁍 4th: Heart, I LOVE

“I LOVE being me, and I love my life and truly truly love myself. I love this FEELING this wonderful world and this incredible and HAVING all of this abundance, love and comfort. I love and open myself to more love. I love BEING here, now, as this person. I LOVE FEELING the ideal.” I forgave and let go of all the past and enjoy feeling love and safety within my heart. All of my frequencies stem from my hearts centre and I forgive all of the past and let go of all pain felt within my heart, body and mind. I open myself to my new self concept and world and can safely be myself. I LOVE experiencing ALL I’ve ever wanted and send out only the best feelings and frequencies from my heart centre and body.

𑁍 3rd: Solar Plexus, I DO

“I DO all the things that prove I AM the ideal and have all I’ve wanted. My actions and thinking show I AM and have all I wanted. I do not chase, I attract. I get to DO anything in my 3D world. And all of the actions performed in my 4D mind DO align with my ideal. I DO wonder things with my new blessed resources I NOW enjoy. I get to DO anything I desire. I DO create wealth and love with the power that is my self. I do FEEL wealthy, safe, powerful, grateful and like I can DO anything I want now. I do enjoy FEELING confident with a wonderful self concept and view of myself. I DO FEEL confident. I do let myself experience the best and open myself to wonderful things.” I DO perform the mental actions that show I am the ideal and have all I’ve wanted. As you DO, you begin to FEEL your truth.

𑁍 2nd: Sacral, I FEEL

“I FEEL peace KNOWING and ENJOYING wealth, safety and endless possibilities. I FEEL wealthy. I feel I can do anything I want. I feel confident. I feel like nothing can stop me now. I feel a wondrous self concept and wealth surrounding my entire BEING and heart centre. I feel abundance all around me. I feel abundance wants me more. I feel incredible SEEING it all around me, KNOWING it for the first time, LOVING it, and LIVING in it, and getting TO DO it.” I allow myself to experience the pleasures of all life and wonderful things. I open myself up and let go of all hurt and pain of the past and allow myself to FEEL the best and no longer close myself off.

𑁍 1st: Root, I AM

The root of all things. The source of all things is your I AM. I AM begins and all other follows.

“I am grounded in my new self concept and world. I am grounded, safe, in control. I FEEL grounded with my new wealth, self love, and deep trust of myself and thus the universe. I AM the power and I AM in control. I FEEL, EXPERIENCE (do), SEE, KNOW safety, security, foundation, abundance. I trust myself and let go of anxiety and fear. I AM ON HARVEST GROUND. I AM IN MY OWN KINGDOM. I am the Ruler of my great world, and I now take control. I AM the only power. I AM wealthy. I AM safe. I AM loved. I AM smart, capable and strong. I AM enjoying my new self and world. I AM: SEEING IT, KNOWING IT, SPEAKING OF IT, LOVING IT, FEELING IT and actually DOING IT. I am here. I am experiencing it with all of my senses and all parts of me, all chakras, all things that make up this existence. I SEE IT, I can only SPEAK of it as it’s the only thing of existence. I KNOW it to be my life as I’m truly experiencing it and can only see what is, what’s true, to me. I can only FEEL what’s true, what I AM. I can only LOVE being me in this life. What I rest KNOWING to be true, what I SEE IN MY MINDS EYE, the only thing that exists and the only thing that begins experience.” All things follow my minds eye. What I FEEL to be true, what I KNOW to believe. What I SPEAK about and experience. What I SEE that I DO in my minds eye. What I LOVE. These are all Neville’s teachings in all forms and it all begins with the first part of you: your ROOT, your I AM. All things follow your ROOT, your consciousness. In all quantum physics it all begins with the ROOT: the beginning: the first, your consciousness, your I AM. Your I AM choosing to see, make up, feel, know, do. We visualize but also we imagine ourselves DOING but it is no different than your regular day to day of making up your existence. Truly experiencing it, knowing it to be true. What you SEE on your minds eye what you SEE yourself DOING and living as, here and now. KNOWING who you are.

I am rid of the past, the old self, the old worlds, the old wounds, the old pains, the old way of being. The old KNOWING, BELIEVING, and FEELINGS of turmoil, struggle, pain, isolation, fear, scarcity, distrust. I AM BORN NEW.

Neville says “experience what you would in the flesh: see it, feel it, know it, do it, experience it, be it, speak it, love it” and enjoy it as real. Your I AM truly will be made to be.

Neville said “if I refuse current evidence of my senses, and assume I have sufficient wine for my guests then in a way unknown to man, I will have sufficient wine for my guests.” In my mind I KNOW, SEE, FEEL, BELIEVE I have sufficient wine for my guests and deny evidence of (old) senses, wine is produced from using my ROOT to activate the rest of me to establish this truth.

Think of all of his teachings. Some for example being the woman who unburned her hand, Himself out of the army, the child who finally manifested his puppy, the woman who found all her furniture and so on. It begins with your Root, your I AM and all things follow. You’re activating everything. You are the entirety of your whole life and experience based on ALL of you. It’s all you energetically flowing in unison and in accordance of your true inner happenings like the energy ball of life spinning in and out in accordance to the perceiver of what this consciousness is creating and activating within this world.

You’re activating your entire existence with your very power. There is no existence without these things. There is nothing without you and your being. There is nothing without your I AM, feeling, seeing, doing, being, feeling, loving, having, thinking, imagining, speaking, etc. You’ve always done all these things but without control of them. YOU are the thing that makes up existence. Your entire being with everything that you even CAN do in this existence.

Everything that you do and allow to imagine and feel and tell as your story, as your I AM, as your beginning makes up your entire existence. Everything you allow yourself to think, feel, experience, make up, see, hold yourself as, etc makes up your entire existence.

YOU are making your entire existence with the only things that CAN and DOES make up existence ….

Don't you get tired when you try to point out someone's privilege and they get defensive and list their gender, sexual orientation, mental health problems, race, religion, etc., etc., etc.? Today I got around to reading an article, "The Race to Innocence: Confronting Hierarchical Relations among Women," written by Mary Louise Fellows and Sherene Razack, professors at the University of Minnesota and University of Toronto, respectively, in 1998.

The article begins by defining the concept of "race to innocence":

When we view ourselves as innocent, we cannot confront the hierarchies that operate among us. Instead, each woman claims that her own marginality is the worst one; failing to interrogate her complicity in other women's lives, she continues to participate in the practices that oppress other women. We have named the process through which a woman comes to believe that her own claim of subordination is the most urgent and that she is unimplicated in the subordination of other women as the "race to innocence".

Although they focus this article on the experiences of women, it's worth extending this concept to people of any gender. Countless times on this site we have seen that the lack of accountability and the desire to use their own oppression as a weapon of defense in denying their own participation in a system that oppresses others (and Others) is not unique to women.

Why would this happen? The authors point out three reasons:

We feel compelled to secure our own place on the margin as the most oppressed. If we don't do so is to risk erasure. If I don't talk about my experiences as a bisexual, I fear that if I don't, others may continue to invisibilize bisexuality.

Focusing exclusively on one's own subordination is a productive defensive response to oppression.

We hear the narratives of subordination of others in the same way as dominant groups hear the stories of subordinate groups. Focusing too much on our own oppressions can lead us to assume positions that deny or minimize the oppressions of others (which we don't suffer). This is related to what the authors call "securing a toehold on respectability", that is, seeking our own respectability as people who suffer certain oppression, maintaining our privileged position thanks to the exploitation and oppression of others.

The fact that this article was written almost 30 years ago and we are still having these discussions is, to me, a warning about the danger of letting the sacralization of the defense of one's own identity, rather than direct and organized action with others (and in the streets), guide our militancy. Intersectionality, in this interconnected world, is more urgent than ever.

All my relatives: Exploring Lakota ontology, belief, and ritual. Posthumus DC (2022)

This is a book all about Lakota traditional beliefs and therefore has a lot of information connected to Mitakuye Oyasin. “At the heart of both Lakota religious continuity and innovation is an underlying animist ontological orientation, a basic way of seeing, understanding, and being in the world that extends personhood— in the form of a soul or spirit— to nonhuman life- forms.” This is expressed with ‘Mitakuye Oyasin’ –meaning ‘all my relatives’ or ‘we are all related’, which refers not only to human kinship but also to the relationship shared by all life-forms, both human and nonhuman, and the reciprocal obligations, responsibilities, and mutual respect that naturally extend from it” (14).

This repeats much of the ideas from similar definitions: belief in the connection between all life, relationships, the power the phrase has. It also gives a lot of words to help define these beliefs in academic language. Another important thing to point out is the way mitakuye oyasin is recognized as being part of Lakota innovation; my goal here is to use mitakuye oyasin to an innovation of queer ecology–hopefully add to the conversation.

“The normative cultural values encompassed by mitákuye oyásʾį are the very foundation of kinship, relational ontology, and the overarching interspecies collective, of which humans are only one hoop, one oyáte ‘people, nation, tribe’, in the company of many others. The key constituents of this animist ontology and worldview, of mitákuye oyásʾį, are persons, a category that extends beyond human beings to nonhuman or other- than- human persons. [...] Importantly, the Lakota worldview sees humans as the least knowledgeable and powerful beings, requiring the most aid and pity, upending the common Western biblical assumption that humans have dominion to rule over all other life- forms and subdue the earth (see V. Deloria 1999, 50; 2009, 99– 100). For the Lakotas, the seed of all life is wakʿą ‘sacrality, mystery, divinity’; ́ hence all life- forms share a generalized interiority, whether human or nonhuman.”

This is important information to support my argument. Queer ecology is very critical of Western beliefs and dichotomies that separate humans from nature and thereby present mankind as the ultimate lifeform (anthropocentrism). There are many essays and articles that examine the influence Christianity has had on the colonialist project (Gaard is the first that comes to mind). The Lakota worldview of being the ‘younger siblings’ of creation are supported by science in that ‘humans’ as a 'species' haven’t existed all that long in comparison to other 'species' and like many indigenous cultures, Lakota people knew the key to knowing nature was to learn from the world around us, as the author later confirms:

“Deloria explains that “the oldest traditions say that humans learned politeness and courtesy from the animals. . . . Generations of elders had already observed the behavior of birds . . . and decided that emulating them was the proper way for humans to act” (V. Deloria 2009, 123). Standing Bear (2006a, 56) substantiates this, writing, “The Lakota enjoyed his association with the animal world. For centuries he derived nothing but good from animal creatures. From them were learned lessons in industry, fidelity, and many virtues and much knowledge.” (50-51) 

In the author’s footnotes is Vine Deloria’s examination of mitakuye oyasin that is, I feel, a great support of my claim:

“Vine Deloria refers to mitákuye oyásʾį as the ‘Indian principle of interpretation/observation,’ calling it “a practical methodological tool for investigating the natural world and drawing conclusions about it that can serve as guides for understanding nature and living comfortably within it. . . . We observe the natural world by looking for relationships between various things in it. . . . This concept is simply the relativity concept as applied to a universe that people experience as alive and not as dead or inert” (1999, 34). (Posthumus 2022 p219 f)

Queer ecology’s goal in many ways is to critique the ways the Western scientific paradigm has created inequity. Many are seemingly searching for solutions and answers to the problems that have been perpetuated by the colonial empire, supported as it is by western science. 

While we must always, always be careful of appropriation and misappropriation–I contend that the solutions are not ones that need to be ‘discovered’ or solved in the way that Western science is so often searching for–advancement, the future…but rather, the answers are in what has always been there…and it’s simply a matter of observation.

John Updike vs. Gay Literature

On May 23, 1999, John Updike published a review of The Spell in The New Yorker magazine. Written by Alan Hollinghurst, the novel is another of his tales of the gay underworld, an attribute that clearly displeased Updike:

The novels of the English writer Alan Hollinghurst take some getting used to; they are relentlessly gay in their personnel, and after a while you begin to long for the chirp and swing and civilizing animation of a female character. Save for the briefly and reluctantly glimpsed sister or mother, there are none. Boredom swoops in without hetero clutter to obstruct its advent. Novels about heterosexual partnering, however frivolous and reducible to increments of selfishness, social accident, foolish overestimations, and inflamed physical detail, do involve the perpetuation of the species and the ancient, sacralized structures of the family. Perhaps the male homosexual, uncushioned as he is by society's circumambient encouragements to breed, feels the lonely human condition with a special bleakness: he must take it straight. The backlash, as The New York Observer reported, was almost immediate:

“It really feels like an attack,” said Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner. Writer and activist Larry Kramer circulated an e-mail alert among gay writers on May 31, with certain of Mr. Updike’s lines highlighted. Novelist Sarah Schulman, who is a lesbian, said she wrote a letter to The New Yorker “the second I read the piece. It was so outrageous.” Craig Lucas, the writer of the movie Longtime Companion, also wrote a letter. “What he basically wanted to do is turn up his nose to distasteful sex,” he said. “This coming from the author of Couples! The idea that heterosexual sex is ‘sacralized,’ in his absurd phrase.” Mr. Kushner thought Mr. Updike knew what he was doing. “I have a suspicion that he thought he was being cute and naughty.” Mr. Kushner said Mr. Updike’s review “represents a kind of genteel tradition of disdain for homosexuals,” that has long been present at the magazine, going back to E.B. White and James Thurber. So far, none of the letters have appeared in the magazine; New Yorker editor David Remnick didn’t return calls for comment. A New Yorker spokesman said, “It’s our understanding that Hollinghurst was not displeased by the review.”

Asked about the controversy, Updike seemed to miss the point of the criticism:

He said he had never read Mr. Hollinghurst before, and that when he did, this was his reaction. “As with all books that you are reviewing, you try to give your impression of the atmosphere within the book, which seemed kind of gloomy and pointless to me,” he said. “So I’ll just have to withstand whatever letters come.” It’s not like he wanted to make generalizations about homosexuality. “I’d be happy not to discuss it,” he said. “Hollinghurst made it kind of tough. It makes it the unavoidable topic of discussion. It’s all about it. And for me to avoid his own emphasis would certainly be not doing my reviewer’s job.”

Colm Tóibín, another notable gay author, further bashed Updike’s views on homosexuality:

If you look at it carefully, that view of his will eventually eat into his reputation. Because his own elaborately confident and super-developed heterosexuality is actually an impediment to the proper writing and it eats at his sentences at times and it eats at his books… If you start reading Updike very carefully you start reading the astonishing boasting about sexual life which I found much more offensive than he does Hollinghurst’s book.

Years later, Hollinghurst himself spoke about the review:

Well, it was deplorable in various ways, but I also remember being very amused by it. There was this person who had gone to rather extraordinary lengths in his details of heterosexual sex and for whom the analysis of sexual behavior seemed to be so fundamental to his work as a novelist. But who was giving the impression in this review that everything he knew about homosexuality he gleaned from my novels, like he had never come across it in real life at all. I thought it was absolutely extraordinary, therefore so absurd, the old way he put it about the animating chirp of the female presence or something that he so missed in my books. It was terribly silly. It showed that he had chosen to emphasize his own failure with this large and interesting aspect of human behavior.
