Ok, so for Kostas, I think what I'm going to do is this:

One version for the mainline, they are shipped with Baraka. So, for this one, I have two versions I like, so I want to know which ones y'all like the most.

The first pass is based more around MK1 Centaurians with a mix of Annihilation Centaurians, but I like the design.

Second pass is more based almost entirely on mainline Centaurians, with next to no influence from MK1

Second version for MK1, they are shipped with both Reptile and Baraka. Again, wasn't sure which one I liked more.

First pass is based on a mix of Tarkata virus from MK1 and Annihilation Centaurians.

Second pass is a mix of MK1 and Annihilation Centaurians, with Tarkata virus mixed in as well. Also some headcanons on how Centaurians would respond to someone catching Tarkata (hence the broken horns)

Ophelia (Ophelie) Lydia Asherson:

She goes by “Ophelie” in the text but her given name is actually Ophelia, because her dad is a professor of western literature and also a nerd. According to google, Ophelia is a Greek girl's name meaning "help," "aid," or "advantage.” didn’t know it had greek origins, but that makes sense. In a more meta sense it was chosen because of its connection to Shakespeare (talked about in text actually.) her looks have changed over the long, long years, but her name has always been Ophelie.

I like the idea that she starts to go by the French variation of her name as a slight way to protest her namesake’s fate. Lydia also has greek origins, but notably it’s a common name in Hawaii because that was the queen of Hawaii’s English name. And it’s Oph’s mother’s name.

Rowan Kosta Hartley:

Rowan is Irish for “red-haired” and is also the name of a tree. I always liked this name and thought it sounded masculine and weighty. I also like the “earthy” connection to the name. Kosta (or Kostas) comes from the Greek meaning "steady or stable" which is actually perfect for him. Canonically he's named after the father he never met--which was actually "Kostas." he spoke little English however and the intricacies of Greek male naming conventions were lost in translation, so his mother just refers to him as "Kosta."

"Hartley" is a stage name (his mother's now his) and it doesn't have any interesting meanings, but I do like the fact that "heart" is literally in the name, fitting. It was also the actress Vivien Leigh's real last name, and the two are based off of Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier.

these names flew into my head 11 years ago, and at this point in my life they're about as normal to me as my own name or my best friend's name. Ophelie was actually conceived as French (and it was actuallly Ophelie,) but here we are.

player: Kostas Tsimikas words: 914 request: Kostas Tsimikas - no pref - 500 - 900 - So Kos and her have been dating for a few months now but no one at the club knows. So when, at the club Christmas party, they end up under the mistletoe (I'm sure Robbo decorated every single doorway with it) and he's like "let's give them a show" and kisses her in a way that steals her breath away

A/N: a huge thank you to @percervall for the help with this one. I am blowing kisses at you, I couldn't have done this without you.

This year, things are being done a little differently at the club. Usually, menial tasks were delegated to anyone and everyone in order to get them accomplished and it doesn’t usually matter who does them, as long as they do. The design of the room and organising it was left to someone that the club paid and it was usually done to the incredibly high standard that you would expect. This year, the players have been tasked with something each. 

Kos has the honour of placement cards. She watched him agonising over designs at home - wanting to make sure that the people he knew well enough had something that was tailored to them. He’d purchased a Cricut and made them this way, setting them all out across their dining room table to see how they looked laid out. He’d tweaked them, bought fancy pens and added small flourishes. 

It wasn’t something that took over, but he certainly took pride in the ones he made and it showed as he gently laid them out on the carefully decorated tables. The room looks amazing, Virgil and Alisson had done an incredible job, though she does suspect their wives may have had a hand in helping. The colour scheme was spot on and certainly provided the perfect photo opportunity that the club would no doubt be taking. 

Out of everything available, she expected Andy to be in charge of Secret Santa, or something fun. Upon finding out that he was in charge of flowers and in turn, mistletoe, she had mixed expectations of how it would end up. And yet, the bouquets that adorn the room and complete the tables are stunning. He walks around now, the usual “Robbo” grin upon his face as he interacts with everyone while wearing his flower crown of holly, berries, mistletoe and a few colour scheme flowers in there too. When he turns around, exposing his back to her, she notices a little sprig of mistletoe tucked in his back pocket for unsuspecting victims. 

“He’s going to get us, you know.” She comments, holding her wine glass closer to her chest as she huddles close to Kostas who has approached her far too quickly for her liking. He scrambled through the crowd of people who had been filing in now for the past half an hour and the once empty room they’d entered is now bustling with people and music is now being played through the speakers. 

“He doesn’t know. He won’t.” But deep down, Kostas knows that Andy knows. He’s seen the looks being thrown his way and he knows it’s a matter of time before they’re outed. It may not be tonight, but this was the start of it. Robbo would watch their reactions and slowly start to make little comments when they’re back in training. And Kostas knows he’ll struggle to hold it all together but Andy thrives on reactions and he’ll keep at it like a dog on a bone. 

“You know what he’s like.”

“I do, and he won’t.”

He wants nothing more than to pull her closer to him by the small of her back, his hand snaking to her waist and press his lips to any part of her that she’ll let him - whether that be her hairline, her temple, the space between her eyebrow and eye, her cheek, nose or of course, her lips. 

He tried to get as many kisses as he possibly could before they headed out in separate cars, not wanting to arouse any suspicion because despite the few blissful months of dating, it’s come at the cost of it being in secret. Kostas is certain that no-one at the club would have an issue with their relationship but he didn’t want it out there just yet and initially, she’d wholeheartedly agreed. She’d seen too many relationships collapse once it became public and yet, it was becoming harder to keep it a secret. Not because others were catching on but because neither of them wanted to stay away from one another any more. 

“Well, looky what we have here.” Andy’s voice sounds behind them and they both groan in unison. “My favourite “non couple but are so a couple” couple.” he grins as Kostas shoots him a look. “Oh come on. If you keep giving me that look I’ll be forced to bring out the gentleman doth protests too much, methinks line.”

“So leave and we won’t have to give you that look,” she comments, giving Andy a little nudge with her elbow and a crooked smile. 

“Oh it’s we now is it? You said that so naturally.” her smile falters and she realises too much has been said. She knows Robbo knows and the look that she spots on Kostas’ face confirms this. 

“Fuck it,” her beautiful Greek boyfriend hisses, downing the rest of his drink before he moves quickly, swiping the mistletoe from behind Andy’s back and holds it above her head. “One of the team’s biggest gobshites isn’t going to stop so what do you say? Kiss me?” 

“Where did you learn the word gobshite?” Robbo asks but his words are drowning out as she steps forward, toe to toe with her secret boyfriend. Her hands move to his waist and to his nape. When her head turns this way, his turns that way and they give a nervous chuckle to one another as they begin to lean in, noses rubbing together before their lips finally meet.

The Medic #5 - Kostas Tsimikas

About the series: The Medic will be an anthology-like series about the reader working for the medical team of the club. Each chapter will feature a different setting/scenario and a different player.

Who: Kostas Tsimikas Prompt / request: based on Kostas's shoulder injury during the Liverpool - Arsenal match. Requested by: anonymous Warnings: mentions of broken bones, slight medical procedures and hospital.

Of course everyone startled when the foul upon him sent Kostas flying over the touchline, bowling over Klopp in the process. Your first worry, as medic, went out to both the members of your team and their well-being. Klopp quickly got back to his feet, and you assumed he was fine. Kostas, on the other hand, remained down.

Kostas lay flat on his front when you quickly kneeled down beside him. One look at him told you he was definitely not alright.

"Tell me," you simply said as you rested a hand on the small of his back, trying to ease him. "S--shoulder..." Kostas' voice trembled with pain. "I heard a c-crack." His gaze finally met yours, and you clearly saw how much pain and fear he was in.

You had to admit: this didn't sound good. You immediately made the substitution signal to Klopp, who was back on his feet and seemingly fine, because it was crystal clear that Kostas would not be able to continue.

"Alright, deep breaths." You turned your attention back to Kostas, doing your best to keep him out of hyperventilating. "It hurts so bad." Kostas spoke through trembling lips. "This isn't good, this feels bad." "Kos, easy," you said a little sharply, recognizing he was spiraling into a panic. "I'm going to help you, but I need you to remain calm. Can you do that for me?" Kostas didn't respond at first, but finally nodded determinedly.

"I need to have a short look at your shoulder. Can you sit up?" You moved your hand higher up Kostas' back in a comforting gesture. Kostas slowly, and with several winces and whimpers, moved himself up until he sat on his knees.

Now that you could have a proper look at him, your first assessment of his condition wasn't an altogether promising one. His face was ashen, eyes wide with pain, and he absolutely refused to move the right shoulder he was gently clutching. He held both arms crossed protectively over his chest, with his left arm supporting his right.

From the place he was gently holding, you deduced the injury was higher up his shoulder and located more to the front. "Don't touch it, please, don't touch it." Kostas recoiled even before you could make a move. "I won't," you eased him. You already suspected him to have a broken collarbone, and having once had that injury yourself, you knew all too well how painful that could be.

"The area your holding, is that the most painful part?" You asked. Kostas nodded, face screwed up in pain. "Yes." It was a first confirmation of what you already dreaded. "My diagnosis so far is that you injured your collarbone. We need to get you to a hospital for some X-rays."

Kostas hung his head in defeat. The possibly lengthy injury he was facing hit him hard. "Alright," he finally agreed, "but I need someone to come with me, because... I don't like hospitals." If you weren't feeling sorry for him already, you surely did now. "Absolutely." You rested a comforting hand on his uninjured shoulder. "I'm going with you and I won't leave you out of my sight."

Life in the Slow Lane: The Brown Garden Snail

Perhaps the most widely known member of the mollusk group, the brown garden snail (Cornu aspersum), also known as the European garden snail, is native to the Mediterranean region of southern Europe and northern Africa, and his since spread to every continent except Antarctica. It thrives in temperate zones, particularly in open forests, coastal dunes, and urban parks and agricultural spaces. This spread has largely been facilitated by humans, and may have started as early as the Neolithic era nearly 8500 years ago.

The brown garden snail's name is an excellent descriptor of the species; both the body and the shell are mainly shades of brown. Generally the body is lighter than the shell, and secretes a thin layer of mucus to keep itself moist. The shell is about 2.5 to 4 cm (0.98-1.57 in) wide, while the body itself is roughly 5-9 cm (1.97-3.54 in) long. Body and shell combined, C. aspersum only weighs 15g (0.53 oz) at maximum. The body is made of two parts; the head, which carries the eye stalks, mouth, and sensory tentacles; and the foot, essentially a large muscle which the snail uses to move from place to place. The rest of its organs, including the heart, lungs, stomach, and anus are contained within the shell itself. Only the genital pore, located on the side of the foot, is exposed.

C. aspersum is primarily an herbivore, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits, as well as rotting plant and animal matter. In order to obtain the calcium it needs to build and maintain its shell, the European garden snail also occasionally consumes soil. Because of its slow nature, reaching a maximum of only 2.4 mm/s (0.09 in/s), this species is a common food item for other predatory snails, centipedes, glow worms, small mammals, lizards, frogs, and birds. However, the brown garden snail is able to retreat into its shell and produce a thick, frothy mucus membrane when threatened.

Like other terrestrial mollusks, the European garden snail is a hermaphroditic species, possessing both male and female gametes. Individuals may reproduce year round, provided with plentiful resources and good environmental conditions. When two snails encounter each other and wish to mate, each one spears the other with a hard calcite spine, known as a love dart. These darts allow the two to exchange sperm, and the process may take several hours. Afterwards, an individual may store viable sperm for up to 4 years. About ten days after a snail fertilizes its sperm, it lays about 50 eggs in a sheltered area; a single snail may do this up to 6 times a year. Eggs take between 2-4 weeks to hatch, and emerge with a soft shell. It takes about 10 months for juveniles to reach full maturity, and they may live up to 3 years in the wild.

Conservation status: C. aspersum has been rated as Least Concern by the IUCN. In both its introduced and native range, it is considered a pest species due to its consumption of crops. However, this species has also been adopted in some areas as a pet or as an edible delicacy.

“I feel like a better comparison to Byleth are the Persona protagonists (at least from 3 onwards), with the whole being silent while also being their own character. Plus the way Byleth's supports are written is kinda similar to the social links in those games.”

I once posted a video explaining why silent protagonists are so popular in Asian countries rather than the cooler reception they get in the West, and part of that is how these protagonists can embody Buddhist ideals. Byleth takes it a step further because of the Buddhist themes.

If we look back at the Nintendo Dream interview, the devs believed most players would pick the BE house and that playing SS would be the most difficult path for players due to their attachment to Edelgard. However, they called Flower the conquest route, saying it leads to hadou while Edelgard own S support calls her path hadou, the route is even named Safflower in Japan meaning attraction.

Because Byleth/the player was attracted to Edelgard, they led Fodlan to the tyranny they were supporting throughout the route (likely unwittingly). They put someone unfit to rule in charge, someone who cared less about the people sacrificed for her war so that she can increase her own power as said in Safflower's epilogue. They lost access to Nirvana at the end, Nirvana being the path of liberation. Because they player acted selfishly, due to attraction and attachment to Edelgard, they failed to be the all-loving hero they were supposed to be.

In the end, when Edelgard was revealed as the Flame Emperor and involved with the people you fought throughout White Clouds, the players are expected to accept this knowledge. To accept that Edelgard lied to and tried to manipulate them, and that while you were fighting TWSITD she was working with them. She worked with them during the Lonato incident and their attempted theft of the Sword of the Creator, she worked with them on Flayn's kidnapping and the experiments that followed., she worked with them during the Part 1 paralogues where they were trying to get their hands on any relics they could while manipulating the Western Church, she worked with them hiding Kronya leading to Jeralt's death. She was the one who hired Kostas with orders to kill her classmates, and if you pay attention to her scenes with Thales she contradicts what she tells you during her supports as she knows Thales and TWSITD are the ones behind the experiments while Hubert reveals she knows they turned her father into their puppet.

In the face of the reveal, the player is expected to put aside that attachment and attraction and, you know, actually take in and understand the full extent of what is being revealed. Their understanding of Fodlan should come into questions, as the narrative Edelgard has been feeding you is for her own benefit (much like TWSITD slipping Claude info during GDWC). She was deliberately trying to sway you into supporting her, so everything she said should be taken with a grain of salt, especially when Safflower repeatedly depicts her being a liar. And from there, it wanted you to pick liberation over conquest.

The fact that Byleth does so by default and the options to join her are framed as changing the story shows how OOC it is for them to support her at the end of WC. Byleth accepts the truth and acts accordingly. A lot of players do not.

Kostas would absolutely carry members of the Shirai Ryu around. They're extra careful with the kids, but the kids are always rambunctious, and occasionally use them as a jungle gym most of the time.

Hanzo and Baraka both think it's adorable that a creature of Kostas' stature, is allowing themselves to be used as such.

I picked up the funny Kuhn book on your rec, and noticed Karl Popper on the same shelf, framing himself in contrast. Do you have/know of any good critiques on Popper in general, or his indeterminism in particular? I'm guessing he didn't convince every Marxist and someone's bound to have responded by now.

yea popper sucks. i mean kuhn himself was responding to / critiquing popper; they very famously had a long ongoing dispute. but like i said before, kuhn is also not where it's at imo. like, not that academic citations are the be-all end-all of intellectual value, but there are reasons you don't typically see either of these guys cited by people working in history / philosophy of science these days lol.

anyway in regards to the marxism angle of this i will say: a major problem with hist/philsci is that these disciplines are pretty ensconced in universities (conservative institutionally & intellectually) and have also taken a long time to even start looking beyond the horizons of great man history, the 'western canon', &c. so the lack of marxists / communists in these fields is like, even more pronounced than in academic history more broadly. like it's insane that people like bob young and roger cooter and adrian desmond are still, like, standouts in this respect lol. so, although there are many many marxists who have responded to popper on those terms, and many many historians and philosophers of science who have responded on that side, the sliver of overlap here is a lot smaller than it should be.

i would definitely read with a critical eye and be on the lookout for places where these texts fail specifically because their authors are not engaging in materialist or properly historicised analysis, or are just blatantly reactionary themselves, in different ways to popper. but, a few places to start with political histsci and philsci critiques of him, or just useful accounts of his legacy and critics:

The Cambridge Companion to Popper (2016). Jeremy Shearmur and Geoffrey Stokes (eds.). <-usual disclaimer that cambridge edited vols. are methodologically, politically, and epistemologically playing it VERY safe. you often want to read them 'backwards', ie, read for what's not being said as much as for what's actually in there. consider this a document that shows what sorts of debates are being permitted, centred, and accepted as 'mainstream' and 'reasonable'.

Jewish merchants and travelers followed Phoenician and Syrian trade routes, extending to the Iberian Peninsula. Judaism was recognized as a legal religion in the Roman Empire, which fostered religious tolerance and allowed a certain degree of self-government for Jewish communities. Jews maintained close ties with Palestine, sending contributions and recognizing Palestinian religious leadership. Over time, the Jewish population grew rapidly, becoming a significant percentage of the Roman population.
