Exploration at the DME

The DME The Digital Media Experience Lab (DME) can be found on the third floor of Ryerson's Student Learning Centre. This lab offers a multitude of machines and materials that are free to use for all Ryerson students. Some of the new, innovative technologies at the DME include 3D printers, Wacom tablets, Oculus Rift, and Arduino.

3D Printing The DME contains 3D printers that are primarily for the use of prototyping. This is a process in which one creates an object generated from a computer. Objects are typically made out of various forms of plastics such as, nylon (polyamide), abs (home printers), resin, etc. Users are given the opportunity to gain an enhanced understanding of the objects they produce, both on screen & in real life. With access to 3D printing, users strongly benefit in the trial and error process of prototyping for their final projects.  

Design Fabrication Zone I am an Interior Design student at Ryerson University and my program's building houses a 3D printing lab called the Design Fabrication Zone (DFZ), so I do have background knowledge on the whole concept of 3D innovation. My program and I have been given tutorials and demos on how to use the 3D printers and the process from creating an object on your computer into psychical form. Since 3D printing is a quick way to make a model, it is often used for prototyping, but it also works incredibly well for a final product.

Scanning in 3D To many, scanning is solely thought of a psychical sheet(s) being transferred into digital copies, files or documents, but overtime it has become a revolutionary technology, able to scan 3D objects. Before attending university, I had minimal knowledge on 3D printing, let alone 3D scanning. I had assumed such a tool was only accessible to those who would use it professionally, such as doctors, engineers, or designers. Although, now that 3D printing/scanning is more commonly used within the community, users of all programs/professions, at any level, can be granted the opportunity to use this form of technology.

While binge watching Greys Anatomy, I stumbled upon an interest way characters in the show have used 3D printing to come up with a solution on how to dissect a tumour from a heart.

Post - Trip Thoughts (Team India)

As your friendly neighbourhood ASB Quote man, I thought i would open up with a quote that is very relevant to my experience on this Trip.

Living with a group of varying personalities in an unfamiliar country for a whole month confined only to a small living quarters with only the basic necessities forces you to adapt. With this adaptability comes growth and this is what this trip has been for me. It has been one of learning and growth. If you stay rigid and close yourself off you prevent yourself from enjoying the greatness that the world has to offer. I have been exposed to so many new and different things that it has expanded my worldview and has left me a new and better person.

On this trip I had my first cold shower as I have always been privileged enough to have access to hot water. Our restriction on water use made me realize how good I have it back home. I used to be afraid of insects but having to deal with so many of them and so often, I quickly got over that fear. I went from the guy who broke his table because he was afraid of spiders to being the one that would be taking them out of the living quarters for the other team members. I have at times been insensitive and inconsiderate towards others but found myself learning the errors of my ways and adjusting myself during this trip. Everyone operates differently in life, for me going into this trip I was an undisciplined immature teenager but coming out of it I am more mature in my thought and behavior and most of all I find myself a disciplined young man. These are only the small things that I write of, the deeper experience is one that you cannot easily describe and have to experience in person.

The ASB experience is one of the defining experiences of my life. I am glad that I applied to be a part of the team and grateful that I was accepted.
