Speak Volumes - Say Nothing!

An argument can be made that the cultivation of peace and quiet is a duty that we owe both to ourselves and to others. Why add to the bumptious exuberance of the present time ? George Gissing, a fellow Londoner and friend of the "King of Silence" - Henry Ryecroft - penned this decades ago:

"More than half a century of existence has taught me upon that most of the wrong and folly which darken earth is due to those who cannot possess their souls in quiet; that most of the good which saves mankind from destruction comes of life that is led in thoughtful stillness. Every day the world grows noisier; I, for one, will have no part in that increasing clamour, and, were it only by my silence, I confer a boon on all." It is worth asking, before we speak, "will my remarks improve upon the silence?"

November 25th - Some things that are seasonal are always a shock when you find them, as they remind you of a year passing. Snowdrops and acolytes after Christmas, the first daffodil, the first berries and galls, etc.

One that always catches me up short is holly berries.

That’s Christmas - it is after all, a great element of Yule symbolism. But they do appear a ways before Christmas and tend to be around long after. I don’t know why, but holly berries never seem that attractive to birds.

These, spotted on a wet Monday morning on the cycleway near Ryecroft Cemetery quite took me by surprise - but then, it’s only a month to go...
