the bell above the door chimed softly as it swung open, ryan stepped inside. you were tucked away in the corner, flipping through records, absorbed in the rhythm of your own thoughts.

but when his voice broke through the mellow backdrop of music, you glanced up, startled at first, before a warm smile spread across your face.

“hey,” he said, leaning casually against a wall beside you, though the way he kept fidgeting with the edge of his jacket gave him away. “you busy after this?”

you tucked a record back into the bin and tilted your head. “not really, why?”

he gestured vaguely toward the door. “thought maybe we could hit the farmers market together. figured you might like the fresh air, and, you know, snacks.”

you chuckled at his attempt to play it cool, noticing the faint hopefulness in his tone. “sure,” you said, closing the bin with a finality that made his face light up. “let me just finish up here.”

“take your time,” he replied, grinning. “i’ll just... pretend i know what i’m looking at until you’re ready.”

true to his word, ryan hovered nearby, pretending to scrutinize an album cover with a furrowed brow. you caught him stealing a glance at you, before quickly looking away, his face turning faintly pink. after paying for your new record, the two of you headed for the door, and he stepped ahead to hold it open for you, his grin widening when you thanked him.

the short walk to the farmers market was filled with playful banter, though ryan’s words occasionally tangled, his nervous energy almost palpable. he played it off every time with a self-deprecating laugh that made your stomach flutter. 

when you arrived, the colorful stalls and bustling crowd stretched out before you. it was vibrant and lively, but the noise and movement started to feel a little overwhelming.

ryan seemed to notice right away. he leaned in slightly, his voice soft and reassuring. “what’re you craving? i’ll grab it.”

you hesitated, scanning the stalls. “um... maybe some strawberries?”

“strawberries it is,” he gave you a quick smile before weaving through the crowd, leaving you with a moment to breathe. from a small distance, you watched as he chatted with the vendor, his easy charm on full display. when he returned, he handed you a carton of the freshest, brightest strawberries, his smile a mix of pride and shyness.

“for you, m’lady,” he teased, giving a dramatic little bow.

you laughed, popping one into your mouth. “these are incredible. guess i’ll have to keep you around for snack duty.”

“high honour,” he replied, walking close enough that your shoulders brushed occasionally. his hand hovered at his side like he wasn’t sure if he should reach for yours.

after exploring a bit more, the two of you ended up at a food truck serving fresh fries. the smell was irresistible. ryan insisted on paying, ignoring your protests with a mock serious look. when the fries arrived, he held the container between you, nudging you to take the crispier ones first. 

you teased him about it, but secretly, the small, thoughtful gesture melted you a little.

as the evening wore on, you wandered toward the park, where twinkling fairy lights strung between trees created a magical glow. it was quieter here, the buzz of the market fading into the background. the two of you walked slowly, sharing the last of the fries and slipping into a comfortable silence, the kind that didn’t feel awkward but instead felt... nice. almost as if you didn’t need words to fill the space.

eventually, you stopped by the flowing lake. the soft hum of distant conversation and the gentle rustle of leaves framed the moment as you turned to look at ryan. he was already looking at you, his expression soft and unguarded.

like he might be trying to memorize every detail of the moment. your heart thudded in your chest.

is this crazy? the thought flickered briefly, but then his gaze softened even more, and you felt something inside you give. he’s right here. he wants this too, doesn’t he? your breath caught as you shifted closer, your mind racing with too many what-ifs to hold onto. the only thing that seemed clear was the pull, subtle, but very much there.

without giving yourself time to overthink it, you felt the words slip out before you could stop them, a quiet, breathless, “screw it,” as you leaned in and kissed him. it was quick, tentative.

your lips brushing his just for a moment, soft and warm. when you pulled back, your breath caught in the air between you, that’s when you saw the surprise in his eyes. 

for a second, you worried you’d misread things, but then his lips curved into a soft, almost disbelieving smile.

his hand found it’s way to your lower back, pulling you closer as he kissed you back.it was a little more passionate this time, less uncertain. your lips met his with a quiet urgency, a shift from hesitation to something more certain.

when you finally broke apart, your breath was uneven, he rested his forehead against yours, his laugh soft and a little shaky.

“i’ve wanted to kiss you for so long,” he murmured, his voice shaky.

you grinned, your boldness returning now that the moment had passed. “guess i beat you to it.”

“not that i’m complaining.”

saying you liked ryan was the understatement of the year.

you had a crush on this man as soon as you got to Colorado.

when you first met him, it felt like a breath of fresh air.

this man one hundred percent gives off golden retriever vibes.

it doesn’t help squash your feelings on how good of a person he is!

him helping out steph with the record store when she’s stressing,

helping old ladies cross the road.

he’s a park ranger for god sakes.

you can’t lie and say that he wasn’t the cause of you running purposefully near the park every other day because he was. you never even thought to pick up a pair of running shoes until you found that out.

yeah, you might not ever be able to have him, but you could at least admire him. he’s just so pretty to look at.

 you decided to leave a little flower at the bench he’d rest at half way through his shift. it was worth the smile it put on his face, jogging away when he had received it.

more recently you wrote little affirmations on a piece of paper tucked away with the flower.

now? you were sat on the record store counter keeping stephanie company as she did inventory, talking her ear off as she flicked through some of the vinyl’s. her eyebrows furrow concentrating on what she was doing but not hard enough that she could still hear you loud and clear.

your legs swinging back and forth sighing happily at the groovy music that ran throughout the place. that’s when the bell rang, it was ryan. he looked heated, but polite enough to say hi to her as he walked in.

walking straight for you, gulping as he got closer. legs stopped kicking when he got so close that you were faced to face. both of his hands were pressed either side of you cornering you, to do nothing but just look at him.

“i got your flowers and your little notes.”

oh fuck. you had been found out. maybe you could play it off?

“uh- what flowers?” you could feel your face flush. so much for playing coy.

“nu-uh you know exactly what i’m talking about.” his face was so close to yours, wondering if itd even help leaning back right now, just closing your eyes hoping the floor would swallow you whole right now.

“fine it was me, you happy?” closing your eyes scared of his reaction.

that’s when everything went quiet, the song changed in the shop and the melody of ‘i was made for lovin’ you’ by kiss played.

steph trying to wingman for you in the radio room.

eyes still closed a giggle left your mouth, but stopped when you felt his lips on yours, tensing up but almost immediately melting into the kiss. wrapping your arms around his neck to pull him closer to deepen it.

hearing a door shut and the girl in the corner cheer, making the two of you pull away laughing.

“i was hoping it was you.”
