Days Of Steam 008: Icarus Redux

Restrained freakout sonics and subcranial rhythms from @icarus-redux — “earth-moving kicks, baleful, eyes-dilated synths, and rough, mostly unsampled breakbeats. Fog machine bathing all as one.” Inspired as an artist by a mixed bag of artists and theorists that cast light on the darkness - Fisher, Graeber, Preciado, Shadow, Sprinkles, Tiqqun, Weatherall - this mix is one of the first I’ve heard that approaches AI-assisted technologies (demuxing, polyrhythmic mixing, etc) in a way that reminds me of early cut-and-paste techniques or Richie Hawtin’s Decks x EFX mixes that reassemble contexts on a micro-level, not just layering tracks over each other but reconstructing them, and here it’s far more subtle. It’s enticing and unnerving to me but such is the effect of the dawn of a new form of technology that has the principle for use and abuse. Here it’s done to only positive effect, again highlighting the spaces between the notes, the snatches of memory that flit through your brain. A lot of the tracks from the early 2010s are records I remember hearing and playing when I lived in Leeds, which I had associated with a very different scene that I naively believed at the time would never truly take off Stateside. At the same time, Disclosure were getting big then and I thought the US would pass them over. From downloading italo and house rips off of Bicep's old blog to seeing them headline warehouses in Brooklyn that charge $40+ admission. Mais je divague...

In 1964, Ford moved to Hollywood to become an actor.

“But I arrived on a metaphoric bus full of people who had the same ambition,” he said.

So he came up with this plan to prevail over the competition:

As Ford spent time around the other aspiring actors on that metaphoric bus, he became aware of something:

Most of them were in a hurry.

They were in a hurry to “make it” or to make lots of money or to prove something to someone.

Whatever the reason, most were on a tight timeline.

So Ford's plan was to do the opposite: to lengthen his timeline.

To do so, Ford said, "I had to have another source of income. So I became a carpenter."

“By doing carpentry," he explained, "I was able to wait it out.

And as the years went by, the attrition rate eliminated many of those people from the competition pool until finally, there were only a few of us left on the bus from that entering class.

I always saw life that way—you just have to find a way to stick it out, to prevail.”

Takeaway 1:

Ford chose carpentry for two reasons.

First...when he first moved to Hollywood, he taught himself the basic carpentry skills needed to fix up his dilapidated house. He was immediately attracted to the process of fixing things, calling it "a form of meditation."

Second...he thought—since Hollywood is an everybody-knows-everybody kind of town—a carpentry job could lead to an acting job.

Indeed.

Ford became known as the "carpenter to the stars." His roster of clients included Francis Ford Coppola, James Caan, Richard Dreyfuss, and Joan Didion.

Most famously, in the early 1970s, Ford was building "an elaborate portico entrance" at Coppola's offices where Coppola's friend, George Lucas, was leading casting meetings for Star Wars.

One day, Ford said, “I was asked by George if I would read with the other actors. There was no indication that I might be considered for a part in the film."

"I read with about 300 actors and weeks later, they asked me if I wanted to play Han Solo."

Takeaway 2:

Ford's “stick it out” strategy is a civilian version of what military strategists refer to as "winning through attrition."

In a study of the major wars that shaped the course of history, the strategist and historian B.H. Liddell Hart found that only 2% of battles were won as a result of a direct attack.

The majority of successful armies throughout history, Hart writes, all had the “power of endurance to last.”

As Ford put it, "You just have to find a way to stick it out, to prevail.”

this is a great question haha!

I feel like fuck James Bond is obvious - he's famously good in bed. Trying to marry or kill him never works out well for the girls in his life.

I would marry Jack Ryan: he's the only one of the three who's shown he can hold down a marriage. Cathy Ryan seems pretty happy most of the time, except when she's being kidnapped by Kenneth Branagh, and Jack provides them a nice house when he's Harrison Ford, so.

But then that leaves Kill Jason Bourne! On the one hand I feel that's the best choice because he hardly ever fucks and certainly wouldn't be a good husband, but also - trying to kill him is literally the worst thing you can do to the guy, he'll fuck your shit right up!

you glanced at your watch again. 11:02 p.m.

the day was almost over, and yet, jack was not home.

you couldn’t be mad, of course, it was only a possibility he could return today, nothing was for sure. but you couldn’t help getting your hopes up. 

maybe, just maybe, he’d have been home in time to celebrate your wedding anniversary. you had kept yourself occupied all day, baking far too many pastries for you or even you and jack to ever eat. baking was your escape. when you were frustrated, you baked.

when you were happy, you baked.

when you were anxious, you baked.

when you were missing your husband who was away overseas, you baked.

it was your outlet, a good one at that.

and you’d spent the entire day baking, trying to distract yourself from the day, and trying to distract yourself from the fact that jack most likely wasn’t returning home today.

you let out a sigh, nestling into the armchair you found yourself curled up in. 

this was jack’s chair. the very chair he occupied almost all day whenever he had days off. he would read files, nap, cuddle with you. 

it was his spot, and it felt so strange to see it constantly empty in his absence.

oh, how you missed him.

you watched the minutes tick by, hoping he would walk through that door. 

but he never did.

as time crawled by, you found yourself overcome with exhaustion. slowly but surely, you slipped into unconsciousness, dreaming of your husband returning home to you…

“honey?”

that voice was familiar. very familiar. you stirred slightly, but remained most unconscious.

you felt a hand on you cheek, a thumb caressing the skin lightly, “oh darling, you weren’t crying, were you?”

now you knew you weren’t dreaming. you opened your eyes slightly, a blurry figure hovering over you. 

“jack..?” 

you blinked rapidly, your vision clearing as you caught sight of your husband’s handsome

face. “it’s me, darling.” you practically jumped awake, eyes widening as you threw your arms around his shoulders.

a deep chuckle came from him as he pulled you close, “i missed you too.” he whispered, burying his head in the crook of your neck. it had been months since you last saw him. 

“god jack, i don’t know if i can keep doing this.” you mumbled, tears obscuring your vision. 

“i know, darling, i know.”

he hated leaving you. but when he was called to serve his country, he had no choice.

“but i won’t have to leave for a long time.” you pulled away, confused. “what do you mean?”

“i mean, it’s our tenth anniversary. i talked to james, and i’m getting some time off.” 

“what?” 

“you heard me. time off. i’ve booked us a nice vacation at that cottage up in the mountains you love so much, a tenth anniversary is a big step, and i wanted to spend it with you. obviously my timing is a little off though but we make it work.” 

you glanced at the watch, a smile gracing your lips as you read the time. 11:59. you looked back at your husband, “you’re right on time.” 

you then kissed him, and it was just as magical as it had been at the alter all those years ago.

being married to a cia agent was tough, you’d worry constantly, wondering if he was going to make it home on time or even at all… 

but you had jack, and that’s all that mattered.
