Me: I just read a great book about South Korean student protests in the 80s!
Betrothed: that's very niche?
Me: It's by the folks who made Chonkers, and I recommend that all the time?
Betrothed: Never heard of it.
Me: I NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT CHONKERS?!

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Occulted by Amy Rose, Ryan Estrada, & Jeongmin Lee
Amy Rose didn’t know much about the outside world. When she was little, her parents brought the whole family into a unique community that was supposed to be welcoming, but was really hiding secrets. One by one, her family members left the compound, until just Amy and her mother were left. By the time she first heard the world “cult,” she had already been living in this place for years. Their leader said that the world was going to end soon, and everybody believed it.
But sometimes Amy wondered if their leader was hiding the truth, and Amy’s thirst for knowledge and love of books will be the most important tools that will help her to escape from this place.
This graphic memoir is a powerful story about cults, secrets, deception, family problems, and a child who was smart enough and brave enough to take back control of her own life. Give this book to teens or even adults who love survivor stories!

Review: "Banned Book Club" by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada
Quick review for a quick read. The irony of reading a banned book called “Banned Book Club” is not lost on me considering the current of backlash that’s occurring specifically within the United States right now – in schools, in libraries, heck – even some bookstores considering the legal challenges. But I can honestly be thankful I had the opportunity to pick up this joint effort by Kim Hyun…

So, am I the only one who saw that one cop, you know, the one who always looks constipated as fuck, him and some of his "friends" brought the tall nerdy guy who used to always kind of SMELL to the hospital? They were being real damn secretive about it, too. I think these may be the same people! Don't quote me on that, though.
SAY. THEIR. NAMES.

It’s really fucked up to say that about Detective ET, tho- Maybe it’s genetic and he can’t help that he has resting basset hound-face. There were a group of people dragging Elias through town not too long ago. And I’m pretty sure there were a lot of people involved in both incidents. Whatever is going on, it’s even crazier that not a single Council member has really said anything about it. And they’ll only stay tight-lipped as long as we let them.

Out this week: Failure to Launch (Iron Circus, $30):
This new anthology has an interesting premise, as it features stories not about history’s winners, but its losers. Failure to Launch: A Tour of Ill-Fated Futures is “a light-hearted, educational tour of (so far!) unrealized technological and societal advances promised in years past, but which never came to be.” Contributors include Blue Delliquanti, Ryan North, Evan Dahm, Ryan Estrada, Aarón Cruz, Colton Fox and many more.

[Image ID: The book covers for The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson; Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada; I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy; and Nimona by ND Stevenson. End ID]
my 5 star reads from this year
nimona kind of sticks out as the one that doesn't belong, but I had a good time rereading it so yeah
the warmth of other suns is absolutely my favorite book I read this year and my favorite nonfiction piece overall, I think everyone needs to read it
