Review: "Banned Book Club" by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada
Quick review for a quick read. The irony of reading a banned book called “Banned Book Club” is not lost on me considering the current of backlash that’s occurring specifically within the United States right now – in schools, in libraries, heck – even some bookstores considering the legal challenges. But I can honestly be thankful I had the opportunity to pick up this joint effort by Kim Hyun…

Hi, I just read your book gender queer and wanted to tell you that i have never felt more seen by a book in my life (or any media for that matter). Im also genderqueer and somewhere on the aro/ace spectrum and your book put into words alot of things I’ve never known how to express. Thank you for putting yourself out there!
(also do you have any other comic book recommendations?)
Hello anon! Thank you for this kind message! I very much do have comic book recs. In no particular order, here are some favorites. Not all of these are books are queer, but many are. my 5 star reads from this year
nimona kind of sticks out as the one that doesn't belong, but I had a good time rereading it so yeah
the warmth of other suns is absolutely my favorite book I read this year and my favorite nonfiction piece overall, I think everyone needs to read it

Book Collage 2023
Collage of all the books I’ve read in 2023! This has been a fun little pet project for me for the past few months; I just really enjoy seeing all the covers together and playing around with organizing them in a way that looks cool. What’s included: all books (regardless of format), short stories, graphic novels, art books, VNs/multimedia novels, and poetry that I completed reading in 2023 (would include zines or plays as well except I don’t think I read any, at least not cover to cover). What’s not included: individual news/nonfiction articles, fanfiction (mostly bc it’s so much harder to track — I’m considering altering this next year if I do this again), individual chapters of ongoing serials (eg every new Black Butler chapter or Wayne Family Adventures episode from this year), works shared with me by friends that are not available to the general public, anything that was not archived in my Goodreads list that I forgot about before I decided to do this lol. Yes I did spend the last week figuring out what short things I had saved to read that I could use to fill in any holes.
NB: This is a value-neutral collection of things I read this year, not a rec list. Some of these are beloved favorites I am rereading for the tenth time. Some of them are new-to-me books that I absolutely loathed. Feel free to ask my opinion if you’d like to know what I thought of a specific book.
Thanks again to @fluffyblue-multifandommess for recommending software to make this with!!

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook, Ryan Estrada, & Ko Hyung-Ju
This graphic-format autobiography tells the story of Kim Hyun Sook’s experience attending college in South Korea in 1983. She thought she was going to study Western Literature and learn more about the world around her. But she never imagined that she would be attending secret underground meetings and protesting against a government that tortured, imprisoned, and murdered its critics.
Give this book to teens and adults who are ready for a stunning book about banned books, censorship, protests, and the dream of democracy.

Advance Review: Banned Book Club
anned Book Club is a wonderful showcase for the connection between the visual and verbal, which is what the comics medium does best. We have an advance review #comics #comicbooks @ironcircuscomix
Banned Book Club is an inspiring and educational piece of graphic non-fiction from writers Kim Hyun Sook and Ryan Estrada with manhwa-influenced visuals from artists Ko Hyung-Ju. It tells the story of the 1983 student protests about South Korea’s authoritarian Fifth Republic from the perspective of Hyun Sook herself, who begins as a young, timid girl that just wants to study English…

When Kim Hyun Sook started college in 1983 she was ready for her world to open up. After acing her exams and sort-of convincing her traditional mother that it was a good idea for a woman to go to college, she looked forward to soaking up the ideas of Western Literature far from the drudgery she was promised at her family’s restaurant. But literature class would prove to be just the start of a massive turning point, still focused on reading but with life-or-death stakes she never could have imagined. This was during South Korea's Fifth Republic, a military regime that entrenched its power through censorship, torture, and the murder of protestors. In this charged political climate, with Molotov cocktails flying and fellow students disappearing for hours and returning with bruises, Hyun Sook sought refuge in the comfort of books. When the handsome young editor of the school newspaper invited her to his reading group, she expected to pop into the cafeteria to talk about Moby Dick, Hamlet, and The Scarlet Letter. Instead she found herself hiding in a basement as the youngest member of an underground banned book club. And as Hyun Sook soon discovered, in a totalitarian regime, the delights of discovering great works of illicit literature are quickly overshadowed by fear and violence as the walls close in. In BANNED BOOK CLUB, Hyun Sook shares a dramatic true story of political division, fear-mongering, anti-intellectualism, the death of democratic institutions, and the relentless rebellion of reading.

Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook & Ryan Estrada. Artist: Ko Hyung-Ju
Age Recommendation: High School Art Style: Black & White Comic Topic/ Theme: Political activism Setting: Anjeon, South Korea, 1983.
Rating: 4/5
Banned Book Club is based on a true story with names changed and stories chopped and changed a little to protect anonymity. Every step Hyun Sook takes on her journey from quiet student to activist is logical, to me that is the sign of a good biography. Even though no everything can be included the skeleton is there. I did like how it was written even if the last chapter felt odd. There is a true universalness to this. It is likely that most readers will see themselves in one or another of the characters.
This is written with a focus on humanity in a part of history not looked at or spoken about in the West. But it is relevant in a way. The warning signs of a dictator or autocrat are fairly universal. The section where Jihoo is reading North Korean propaganda was particularly good for that. I really liked Jihoo and his whole life, it would not have been easy, it would have been hell. But that was an important story to include. Including the creep of a teacher was welcome too. Thank all things good (awful?) for that slight bit of normalcy.
The art style is perfect. It shows the emotion of the moment well, not just in the face but in the wider cell. Shading especially for Agent Ok was spectacular.
Okay, so Banned Book Club mentions the Gwangju rebellions. Purely because of this I want to share SPEED's duel music videosThat's my fault and It's over. They deal with that, they are dark but really well done, combined their length is about 25 minutes. Yes, it's kpop but this is South Korea if they can't advocate for the memories of those who died who can?
