RWBY Song Analysis: Winter vs. The Path to Isolation
Now I know what some of you are probably thinking, "The Path to Isolation is a Weiss Schnee song and has nothing to do with her sister.
But after looking at the deleted V9 epilogue, I can clearly see that this song can work for V7-V9 Winter.
And here's the reason why.
To start it off, Winter's return in Volume 7 was something that I couldn't wait to see, considering she is one of my favorite characters.
Winter as a whole is a very serious character, trying her hardest to keep up with the people around her, and make sure no one sees any sort of weakness, or disloyalty to Ironwood and the whole of Atlas.
Now when push came to shove during the volumes, She had to make choices she wasn't proud of nor dejected the orders in certain areas.
Even worse was probably all the deaths caused by the things around them.
Back of course this is about how V10 Winter suits "The Path to Isolation" now.
"It starts with the unexpected loss of something dear."
Already got one notch on the board. At the very end of V8, Winter witnessed the loss of her dear sister, Weiss.
"The warmth that comforted and cradled. Just disappears."
This one can pertain to Penny in a way, another person she lost, who physically disappeared, someone who sought to make sure she knew her life was valued.
"And in its place, there's nothing, just than endless empty hole."
Winter clearly shows how she felt in the deleted animatic, speaking on a more negative value, and really doesn't know how to cope properly with the grief she is feeling."
"The light that showed the way is gone and darkness takes control."
This one goes to Winter talking Ruby in a way, considering to everyone who came because of her video, but since she is dad, Winter doesn't think she can believe in such a voice, allowing the darkness in her heart take control.
"Bitterness and anger, are quick to fill the void."
"The path of isolation is littered with the dreams that lay destroyed."
While studying the song, this line alone was harder to think about, cause in the original context of thinking about Wiess, you can clearly see where this fits into her story.
But Winter's I had to rewatch a lot of the series to see where such things could take place in V10 potentially.
In the end I decided that this was talking about the hope that Winter could've felt after defeating Ironwood, and "saving" Atlas/Mantle, but because of how the cards were dealt, those thoughts could be ruined.
"The cold seems to grow in my soul, its consuming me."
"Confused and I'm losing myself in the storm."
This one goes out to fighting physically and for fighting emotionally.
Winter spent a long time forgetting about how she felt about the things around her, always just following orders. But when everything happened, when everyone fell, and with Ironwood dead, she has no choice but to face the things that she never considered before.
"Growing jaded, being pushed, I'm unraveling."
"Can't find myself when I'm constantly pushed to conform."
Before Weiss was suffering at her father's whim and will, it was Winter who had that heiress seat, who was being pushed around to make sure she always followed through on everything.
Think about how she speaks, how the solider grows cold when she knew that she could have others standing there beside her.
"Enemies surround me, but the worst appear as friends."
"Liars and pretenders, only seek to reach their ends."
Winter has known many people, but Ironwood was someone she trusted, someone she knew for the longest time, but to see him falter to see him make orders that she couldn't approve of morally, was breaking her, making her remember all the things she probably to get away from such ideals.
And when you're in the military its harder to know friend from foe.
"Everything is breaking, right before my eyes."
"Looking in the mirror, I see someone that I don't recognize."
When Penny died, and Winter became the Winter Maiden, she didn't get a real chance at goodbye, just like when Weiss fell, she didn't get a proper chance at goodbye.
So, while she stands in the back breaking into pieces, the person, the maiden she sees every time she wakes up wasn't the person she wanted to know or see.
It was still that hard to remember who she was in the end.
"The joy my heart use to know is eluding me."
"Removed and the one thing I feel is alone."
"Smile's faded, and I'm spinning and sinking. I'm weakening."
This one brings us to the V9 epilogue, and how broken and alone Winter is. She stands away from her mother and Qrow, and even when she stands around anyone else, she seems to be at a distance.
"Frozen in solitude, loneliness chills to the bone."
"Memories escaping me, as my heart begins to drain."
"Scars that cover wounds, can't hide the self-inflicted pain."
To be honest, I was thinking that Winter must hide her own scars that she got over the years. And the fact that she decides that she doesn't want everyone back.
She believes that they aren't going to come back.
"Everything my mind wants, in conflict with my heart."
"Fighting back surrender, but every day I'm falling more apart."
Winter as a solider and a sister, and friend as well, but in the world she was born and trained in, she wasn't thinking about those things.
Her mind thinks in orders, while her heart thinks in feelings.
It's one of those things that almost never add up in certain types of military trained induvials.
I was the same sort of way for the first few months in my training.
It can take a lot of time to ease back into your heart.
"Mirror what's this thing that I see?"
"Who is staring back at me?" "A stranger to my heart has filled my mind."
This one goes to Penny and Winter, considering that when a maiden dies a bit of their spirit goes into their next host. Not to process or make a new person, but to give them new perspective on things that they never thought of before.
"Mirror"
"Help Me"
"Who Am I?"
Winter is not Snow White, she is the mirror, the thing that Weiss relied on.
And whose to say that the mirror never quesitoned themselves?" In the end sadly, until V10 comes out all of this is pure speculation.
But personally its my way to celebrate the end of V9, and the hopes of a new Volume on the horizon.
Until next time.
Thank you for reading.
And thank you, my dear Winter Maiden.

Ruby was certainly getting attention now that she had large tits, thick thighs, and a bouncy ass. All of team RWBY had bodies of bimbos now, something that Ruby's teammates were suspicious about. Ruby lied that it was due to some special cookies, but she wanted to keep the boombox a secret.
Ruby was flaunting and showing off her new assets so much that even Jaune was mesmerized, and Weiss was not happy about that. When she investigated her roommate's belongings she would find the boombox, only to be blindsided by large fat cheeks. Ruby had Weiss pinned down face down and ass up, their round bouncy cheeks pressed together.
"Sorry Weiss, but I can't have you stealing my boombox~"
"Yours?! Ugh! I knew you cheated to get so big! Stay away from Jaune!"
"I will, if you can beat me~"
Weiss was confused before Ruby would channel her aura to the boombox, the base kicking as the words played. Ruby was already dancing, possibly getting bigger and Weiss had no choice but to do battle with their fat asses. Cheeks will ripple, clap, crash and shake the foundation for who is the ultimate booty queen!
baby work baby twerk baby rock baby drop baby work baby twerk
you wiggle wop
baby drop baby work baby twerk baby rock baby drop
baby lemme see you wop
The dorm shook from the boombox's bass, and the thunderous clashes of Ruby and Weiss's fat asses hammered into one another. The music filled their bodies and minds as both Huntresses wanted to prove that they were the better bimbo and worthy of Jaune and his attention. They quickly began to outgrow their clothes as the boombox's power once more affected them both.
baby work baby twerk baby rock baby drop baby work baby twerk
"G-give up! D-daddy belongs to me!" Weiss squealed as she thundered her ass down onto Ruby, trying to use her stronger leg muscles and gargantuan ass to force Ruby onto her knees. "Daddy only needs one princess, and that's me!"
"N~not fair!!! Jaune was my bestie first, so we should be a couple!" Ruby argued back as she felt her body eagerly swell to try and match Weiss's obscene bimbo curves. "Y-you didn't even like him when you two met!"
you wiggle wop
Those words only seemed to incense Weiss as she planted her hands onto her knees and tried to bury Ruby beneath her ass as the residual dust in her body responded to her new growth. "You had your chance, and you wasted it! D-daddy is mine! MINE!!!" Just as she was about to win, Ruby pushed against her, causing her to stumble forward onto her knees.
"I will be the booty queen of this team and be Jaune's girlfriend!!!" Ruby shouted as she used her Semblance to keep Weiss beneath her as her ass grew rapidly. All sense of decency was gone from the reaper as her mind kept replaying the moment they caught Jaune and Pyrrha "training" Weiss, and how much she wanted to be in Weiss' place.
baby drop baby work baby twerk baby rock baby drop
baby lemme see you wop
The boombox wound down as the song finished, and the two Huntresses had become perfect mirrors of one another. All around them were the tattered remains of their clothes as they stared at one another, taking in their round, heavy tits, supple bellies, thick thighs, and unbelievably massive asses. Neither one wanted to back down, and a victor hadn't been decided, so that meant they'd have to have another dance-off. But before either of them could reach the boombox, a voice called out to them.
"Would you look at that? Our Angel went and made a friend." Jaune chuckled as he entered the dorm room, followed by Pyrrha.
"Indeed she did," Pyrrha nodded as she looked at Ruby with the eyes of a hungry wolf eyeing a lone, defenceless sheep.
"M-Mommy, Daddy." Weiss whimpered as she felt Jaune wrap his hands around her, squeezing her new tits gently as he groped at her ass. "I-I did exactly as you said! I-I stole the boombox from Goodwitch, and I made Ruby big, c-can I cum now? p-please!" She looked into Jaune's smouldering eyes as she felt his fingers slip from her nipples to her pussy, and felt him pinch her clit between his fingers and release a surge of aura. Weiss' world went white as she came. For the first time since being discovered by her team, Daddy had finally let her cum.
"Don't you want to feel like that?" Ruby heard Pyrrha whisper in her ear as she watched Weiss go limp in Jaune's arms as she gushed and squirted like crazy. "To able to feel a pleasure so intense that you just lose all control? Well, if you do, come to the gymnasium after dark with Weiss." Pyrrha kissed Ruby on the neck before spanking the reaper on the ass. "Jaune is more than enough to handle the two of you; come down to the gymnasium after dark, and we'll train you just as long and as hard as our Angel."
Ruby couldn't find her voice as her body felt like it was buzzing with pleasure, so she quickly nodded, earning herself another spank across her massive ass.
"Use your words, Cookie, want do you want from Mommy and Daddy?" Pyrrha pressed as she slipped two of her fingers into Ruby's pussy. "What is it you want from us?"
Ruby clung to Pyrrha as the Unbreakable Warrior turned her mind to mush. "I-I..." Ruby started, her voice uneven. "I want Mommy and Daddy to treat me like they treat Weiss!" Ruby screamed as she came all over Pyrrha's fingers.
"Then we'll see you tonight." Pyrrha cooed as she brought her hand up to Ruby's face and made the reaper suck her own juices off of Pyrrha's fingers.

Listed fandom fun
A bit of random data before we jump into the rankings for listed fandoms …
Since the numbers post yesterday we've had signups for nearly 60 new auctions, bringing the current total to 779. That beats the number of signups for 2016/7, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and puts us withing spitting distance of our record last year of 819. Can we do it? Will we do it? Signal boost FTH posts and encourage others to participate. More money raised for good causes, more fanworks in the world — it's a win/win!
We posted yesterday about the state of our unlisted write-in fandoms (we've had nine new ones since then!). Time to check in with the rankings for the listed fandoms.

RWBY volume 2 finale rewatch thoughts, Critical AKA RWDE content ahead.
.Jaune has good taste in very dumb dubstep, I'll give him that
.NPR: RWBY are good at their jobs, what's the worst that coul-"Air raid sirens" OH GOD DAMNIT
.Ren being concerned about his team abandoning a village is foreshadowing for his and Nora's backstories I didn't expect to find here
.Ruby is "useless without her weapon" but she uses kicks rather effectively, also nice Haloid/Matrix reference
.Weiss makes a sword out of Dust before she even gets the knight summon, tell me why they needed to throw those bootleg shin-megami-tensei demons on her moveset at all?
.Jaune wins by the swordplay equivalent to spamming the A button
.Oh god the Junior detectives bit. You are in the middle of a war zone this isn't funny and kills the tone. At least we aren't at the point where Sun is nothing but unfunny jokes but this is the start of that.
.Ruby Saluting the Atlus military and then said Military being just as useful against Grimm feel so antithetical to what a lot of An//ti-Rwdes keep spewing
.Cinder why are in your Villain dress? Also Emerald ass shot no one needed.
.Why does Emerald just a have a better version of Ren's weapon?
.UGHHH team CFVY are overrated as fuck, they basically steal the finale from the characters we actually give a shit about, their theme song while not being bad is just a audio embodyment of trying to hard, and they are built up like such a big deal only to job to the villains, have Velvet get her one cool scene later, and then never be relevant again for like 7+ years outside of books I've heard nothing but bad things about.
.The aura expansion/explosion thing Fox does is cool though, at least. Wait Ren also did a move like that once, why doesn't anyone ever use that move again?
.That is giant ass Beowolf holy shit. also you can really tell a 2010's gamer bro wrote that clothing store line.
."You spent all semester building that up" Coco people are in danger, let her fight you fashion fascist...
.Yeah if you didn't already know, Coco is based on the IRL fashion designer Coco Channel who turned out to be a Nazi, like Nazi party Nazi not neo nazi shit, this was that long ago. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt but this was not common info at the time but you could find it and RT was known to be very edgy and outright offensive (just look up some shit they were saying on internet box) and the leader of a team made up mostly of minorities being lead by a Nazi sounds like a joke they might make, and Coco has some WWII influences in her design, and her being confirmed as lesbian later sounds like it could be a play on the "nazis are secretly gay" thing and... Just please tell me this was unintentional, I don't want to think about this anymore.
.Coco also destroys any hope the Grimm being a threat have, why do they become like.. rubble?
.You can really tell the animation was either running out of budget or was rushed or both in this episode
."Yay we all did it, even though team CVFY did 90% of the work"
.How is there still 7 minutes of episode left?
.Blake says multiple people are behind bars so I am going to believe most of those WF members didn't die, Banesaw lives godamnit
.Zwei mimicking Yang is really cute
."We have no idea what happening, let's go take a nap"
.They try to paint the council as unreasonable for putting Ironwood the charge but he just helped the Kingdom defend itself and we all know how much negativity sports can cause, IRL sports riots are a thing.
.Council are not in the wrong at all for questioning Ozpin, bro is letting the leader of another kingdom in on the truth but not his own?
.Those cells look really cramped, that's a little messed up
.Roman's dialog is fucking gold, I don't much else to say about it
.How is today a success Cinder? Your plan went off early and was stopped
.ADAM... yeah that's it
.Ah the Raven scene, the one that retconed into a fucking dream because no one had any idea what Monty was trying to do with Raven and he died before anyone could learn, it's just fucking sad

Silver Assigns Theme Songs Part I: RWBY
Here we are in the first post of one of the dumber ideas I've had. RWBY is going first because it's the first list I finished. Links to the songs mentioned will be under the cut. (AJ specifically should beware of spoilers because I still want you to watch this.)
Ruby "You Are Enough" by Citizen Soldier. Just go watch the V9 finale, then listen to this song, and try to tell me it is not Ruby Rose. You will never convince me that this song is not hardcore Ruby Rose.
Weiss: "Speechless" from the live action Aladdin movie. Didn't like this movie, did like this song, and there is a reason there are at least three AMVs of this song featuring Weiss already up on Youtube. It's because it's perfect.
Blake: "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman. This is not the attitude she started with but it's the attitude she grew into and you love to see it!
Yang: "Phoenix" and actually I'm not sure who does it, pretty sure it was written for League of Legends. It's catchy though. Anyway, I know that her name means dragon, but have you considered that between the fire and her character arc this girl was made for phoenix imagery?
Jaune: "Lullaby" by Nickelback. The vibes are correct. That is all I can say.
Nora: "Crazy Angels" by Carrie Underwood. I admit, this is the one I was least convinced about. Maybe I'm just listening to the wrong kind of music, but Nora is actually really hard to find a song for. I landed on this one because "sweetheart with a wild side, girl next door with a rebel smile" isn't a bad description of our favorite Valkyrie, even if it isn't the best, and this is absolutely the kind of song that I can see her enjoying, unlike most of the others.
Pyrrha: "Just a Dream" by Sam Tsui and Christina Grimmie. I also contemplated "Watching for Comets" or "Lucy" by Skillet, or "Living Without You" by Beth Crowley, but I'm not that mean. It's a very sweet, sad song about lost love and lost opportunities.
Ren: "True Colors" originally by Cindy Lauper, covered by everyone and their dog, I'll be linking the Celtic Woman version because I like it the best. Go watch V8 again if you don't know why this one fits.
Oscar: "I'm Still Here" from Treasure Planet. Oscar's character arc, plus the vibes, ended up making this one win out.
*Bonus!* Emerald: "Lovely" originally by Billie Eilish but the specific version I'm assigning her is a rock cover. I don't have any real concrete reasons, but the vibes of the song combined with the way (In my interpretation) Emerald has always wanted to be safe and loved made the choice for me.

The thing about that Winter thing, just to remind, from her POV she killed James. The last she saw of him was was her making him explode. From her perspective she is the one who killed that guy. And she is not very Brocken up about it.
Its amusing because they give Adam more sympathy then this. Blake literally broke down sobbing after killing him and even the triumphant song they released had a note about how sad Adam's story was and how this boy lost his way being consumed by hate and spite.
It was not alot, but like...its more then they give Jimmy LOL.
Pretty sure I got this ask when we all thought Winter was writing on Ironwood's grave, but regardless...
Yeeeah.
Something I've been thinking about lately is how Ironwood is the one villain who is still irrevocably against Salem and how that should have made such a difference, but didn't. Even Adam, whose story-line became 99% about his abusive relationship with Blake, was working with Cinder earlier on who, in turn, was working for Salem. Every major villain in the show (that I can think of off the top of my head, anyway) did something to forward Salem's agenda: Cinder, Watts, Tyrian, Hazel, Emerald, Raven, Adam, Roman. That consistency means that although I might often side-eye the heroes' inability to forgive (or hypocritically forgive on a dime) it at least makes sense that they would look at someone like Lionheart, someone who was helping Salem end the world, and dismiss any goodness within them.
Ironwood, in contrast, was working against Salem up until the moment he died.
Did the writers give him a senseless, fucked-up means of moving against Salem via a 'just bomb civilians' plan? Yes and I'll forever side-eye that too. However, I think if the heroes should have forgiveness/sympathy/mixed feelings/an emotional reaction to any villain, it should be the one whose villains acts were all in the name of stopping their shared enemy. In debating the ethical and practical merits of Ironwood's plans, I think many fans have lost sight of the larger picture. He's trying to get the Relics away from Salem, keep their last army of huntsmen in reserve to fight Salem later, get at least one city of people safely away from Salem. No matter how messed up, no matter how misguided and OOC there wasn't a single thing Ironwood did that wasn't guided by his attempts to keep Salem from ending the world. In a better written show, that would have meant something. Even if we still had to get cartoon villain Ironwood, the characters would at least acknowledge that he (from the show's POV) did all the wrong things for the right reasons. Winter in particular was set up to be that nuanced insight, given his mentor-esque status and her unfailing faith in 99% of the choices Ironwood made. That the show would have her (from her POV) kill him and then just sneer at how she waited too long to do it is insane. Please write these characters humanely! Even if you come to hate someone for what they've done, years worth of love for them doesn't just up and disappear!! That's the one (1) snow scene moment RWBY got completely right: of course Ozpin is still going to care for Lionheart despite his betrayal.
For me, intent will always matter. It might not excuse everything (or anything at all), but it opens the door for forgiveness in a way that few other things will. Which is why the intent of other characters, in contrast, makes Ironwood's writing so much worse. You have Qrow teaming up with Tyrian because he refuses to go see Ironwood in handcuffs and Emerald who is "redeemed" because she was literally just standing beside Oscar post-realization that Cinder doesn't love her. The show says, "You're forgiven for being so stubborn you'll deliberately help kill your friend" and the characters say "You're forgiven for trying to end the world/destroying a school and then stopping out of selfish self-interest." But there's no "You're forgiven for taking extreme measures in a no-win scenario in an effort to salvage some hope against an immortal enemy." That's messed up to me! Especially given that Ironwood is (presumably) dead. If there's ever a time to let characters extend compassion in a way they may not be able to with the person still there and potentially still enacting wrong, it's when they've died for those heroic beliefs. Ironwood is the one villain who, methods aside, was 100% fighting the right battle and he's simultaneously the one villain that characters and story alike refuse to give even a smidge of sympathy for. Wild.

Hoyofair Spring 2024 Creator Links!
Like last Hoyofair I'm making a post linking to the youtube channels of each project shared at hoyofair! Be sure to follow the creators and support their main channels so they can keep making amazing projects like these!
Galactic Abyss Chronicles - 神·潜行瞬杀 and others
I actually found the director, head animator, and head modeler on Bilibili! Here Real proud of myself because he has no accounts on the western internet. He hasn't posted the full short on his account yet but he does have a fananimation for the Apex Legends X FFVII Rebirth collab.
From what I can tell this is also the first Genshin related animation he's done which is cool. The rest of the creators seem to be from the CN fandom as well although I could not find their Bilibili's from a quick search
Ranked DayCare - by No_Tables
Their first Hoyo short was at Hoyofair 2023. So it's great to see them back with a new bit. Now with Klee!
Moonlit Bamboo Forest - Passion Paris
So this is apparently an Academy Award winning Animation studio!? Passion Pictures is the studios name and the Paris branch animated this short. We have legit 2D animation studios submitting Shorts to Hoyofair now. Wow!
Needless to say this was the short with the most unique animation style. And one of my top favorites this year.
Trial by Combat - ???
So this one seems to be just a collab of a bunch of animators. Like I can't find the project manager online (too generic a name for google). The head animator has a twitter but Twitter changed at somepoint where it won't let me view a direct link to someones profile without being logged in. I ain't creating a twitter for this rabbit hole. his username is rabbitoldman if you want to look him up. But he hasn't made any tweets with the word genshin as far as google's concerned.
I just can't find one sorry.
Progenitor: The Surface - dillongoo
Ex- RWBY animator returns with episode 3 of his "if genshin was a cyberpunk anime" series. The first two episodes hit so hard and the 3rd episode does not disappoint!
youtube
Realm of Faith: Live Actually - Type Zero Inc
Another legit animation studio for the animation. They don't have a youtube so i don't know if they'll ever upload the full version anywhere other than hoyofair.
But! The two songs have been posted on the singers youtubes with longer versions!
majiko(Furina), 4s4ki(Lumine), Wolpis Carter(Venti)
youtube
Chogakusei (Wriothesley), Amatsuki (Childe), 96Neko (Arlecchino)
youtube
Domain 404 - LucHD
Their first and only other Hoyofair short was shown over a year ago at hoyofair 2022. But Luc has returned with a full 4 minute short filled with Spiral Abyss and other meta in jokes. Diluc out here maining a C6 Bennett lol.
youtube
TitanSlayers: Edge of Oblivion - Kieru
Kieru once again turns in an amazing action packed animation. The last one was the Persona spoof with Lyney and Lynette. But my favorite of theirs is Cyno vs Anubis and the Gods
Shenhe Awaken - Rhinocore
They made a previous short for Hoyofair but that one was never posted to a youtube channel other than hoyofair. So I'm going to assume they don't have a youtube and this one is just going to say on Hoyofair as well.
---
And that's all the Creators from this Hoyofair! It was less creators than the winter one but I feel like that might be because multiple shorts are nearly 10 minutes.
But which one was your favorite? Do you like the change to less but longer shorts? Or do you wish they went back to more shorts 2-5 minutes long? Let me know in the tags! And be sure to follow all these guys on their youtube's so you can see the teaser trailers they post a few days before each Hoyofair.

RWBY Vol9 Finale Review
I don’t know I gaslit myself into thinking the episode might be 40 minutes but I did. 💀 Regardless, the episode surprised me.
Listen, I know Summer might’ve had a good reason, but right now Kali is the only good mother out of the 4 main characters and I never want to hear Tai slander again. He has been playing a rigged game. I need Ruby to hunt Raven down for answers.
With this color palette I could only think of the episode where phantom Blake says “You can be cat if you want.” This would be the result, like monkey’s paw wish.
Listen, I gasped. She came back high on life and that’s wonderful. I am a little sad though she didn’t get new clothes, but the song was wonderful.
Honestly I couldn’t think of better end for Neo. I’m mad at myself for not going on the record saying she’s make Roman one last time. I think this is the first time a villain simply took their exit. Probably because Neo is the only to actually achieve their goal.
*holding back tears*
I was NOT expecting the gods to be from here. I thought they made it and went “Eh, let’s try again.” All this time they’ve basically been like young inventors workshopping their idea💀
Also, RT, make these plushies.
I win! I win! I win!
I was getting scared they weren’t gonna change him back! Weirdly enough, the white streaks make me like this haircut more. I know they probably kept them to make a noticeable difference to him than before but this also could imply his hair wasn’t going white from age. It was stress.
The Blacksmith said “when you are needed most.” I need to know how much time has passed. There are ships here already. If another volume does get green lit, I wonder if it would pick up from here or it would be what everyone else was doing.

“Why” 😭
Blame my brain...it wanted to be angsty. This is what happens when I let intrusive thoughts win. I heard that song and immediately felt sad and thought about the future stuff when Gwen passes away...
Normal people watching RWBY 9 episode 6: (spoilers) *cheering* Yes! Yang and Blake kissed!! Bumblebee is becoming canon!! They finally confessed to each other!
Me: *sobbing in the corner hearing the music, thinking about something entirely off topic. Picturing a teary-eyed Mewtwo reaching to the stars, thinking of his deceased beloved* 😭😭😭

the thing about the songs is that you never really know if there's a connection between two different songs based on similar lyrics or if it's just a coincidence
which sucks bc i'm currently rotating sacrifice and hero in my head bc there's... something about this that's tickling the conspiracy theory side of my brain:
born and angel, heaven sent falls from grace are never elegant. stars will drop out of the sky, the moon will sadly watch the roses die. in vain, lost, no gain, but you're not taking me. you can't have my life, i'm not your sacrifice. you can try, but i'm free, and you won't conquer me. i won't crawl, most of all, i won't fall, for you.
take my hand i'm here to protect you, nothing will stop me understand there's no sacrifice, that i won't make i'll risk it all to keep you safe trust me to be strong i'll be your hero just hold on
and
what if all the plans you made, were not worth the price they paid? even with the lives you stole, still no closer to your goal
i've made my plan hearts and minds may not agree emotions topple strategy you can't believe in honesty that your children can win a war
like... in hero, you have this hero character who has made a plan and is willing to see it through no matter what; there's no sacrifice they won't make, and they're willing to risk it all to keep someone safe, just trust them okay? there's nothing to worry about here!! they'll be the hero, and part of it seems to stem from the belief that the children can't win this war. it's almost like the hero is willing to take all these risks, and sacrifice others along the way if necessary, to keep the children safe.
and in sacrifice, you have someone who's not willing to really play along? the hero is willing to sacrifice those they deem necessary ("necessary" sacrifices are a thing in rwby, see: ilia about sienna [5.5], and tyrian about watts (and neo, sorta) [8.1]), but the presumed sacrifice is like nah, not me, they're not there to take the fall for the hero, they're free. the sacrifice also makes a pointed statement about the plans the hero may have (that others might not agree with); what if it wasn't worth it? it's been a long time—"just hold on" the hero says, as if the plan is long time in the making, they'll be the hero by the end of it, you'll see—but actually, the hero is no closer to their goal.
it's not so much about who or what the songs are really about, it's about the general sentiment behind them; a story about the hero and the sacrifice and the reasons behind their actions / thought process / etc. and how it could apply to other parts of the overall story that goes beneath the surface level of who / what these songs are actually about.

Bracket B thoughts:
"Yodel-Aadle-Eedle-Idle-Oo" is better than I expected from the movie's reputation, but I really only have so much tolerance for yodeling. Also the lines "You'll suffer till the end of time / Enduring tortures, most of which rhyme" from "Robot Hell" are hilarious.
...It's fucking "In the Hall of the Mountain King." I don't need to explain that one.
"Kidnap the Sandy Claws" isn't as bad as I remembered it being, but the verses that don't rhyme really irk me for some reason, and Lock+Shock+Barrel's singing is just...not great. So I'll give this one to "Big Shot."
"Wait for It," I will begrudgingly admit, is a good song. It's not the best villain song in that matchup, though. It's not even Burr's best villain song (that would be "The Room Where It Happens"). "Want You Gone" still very clearly has GLaDOS' trademark condescension, snark, and vitriol towards Chell, but it's also mixed with her complicated need for her to be around that adds a lot of emotional nuance to her insulting goodbye. Does she really want Chell gone because she's a pain in the ass, or because she knows keeping her in Aperture will hurt her? Does she want Chell to stay to keep testing her, or because she's her only friend? Honestly, probably some of both columns. GLaDOS has very good villain songs.
"Magic Dance" just feels like an excuse to have David Bowie do David Bowie things while singing a David Bowie song alongside minions whose singing...really sucks. "Meant to Be Yours" is a really intense encapsulation of JD's character, swinging from slow, emotional expressions of love to fast-paced, aggressive vows of violence.
"Great at Crime" is just a fucking bop, IDK. It's very catchy and goofy (in an intentional way).
Both "The Mob Song" and "Biggering" are very good, honestly. Personal preference for me.
Have you heard that guitar in "E.G.G.M.A.N"?! That shit SLAPS. It makes the phrase "I am the Eggman" sound cool.
"Look Away" is...really just not a Villain Song. Doesn't focus on Olaf enough. "There Ain't Nothin But Bad Days Ahead" is not exactly what I'd call good, but it's more fitting for this tournament.
...fuck IDK, I voted for "Who Will Know" because it seemed underappreciated, but I get why "Nothing Left to Lose" is winning. That one is really good. Maybe I should have gone for that instead.
All of the IEYTD theme songs kick ass and "Cog in the Machine" is no exception. Those vocals are powerful and emotional and very good.
"Love Doesn't Stand A Chance" confuses me because it has Regina calling Snow White a "bitch," but also can't show her doing any villainy more intense than childish mayhem like ripping a grandma's knitting and pushing a dwarf over. The tone is very confused. Also, Jeremy Jordan sings the English version of "Hurricane" and I'm a sucker for him belting about justice.
"Les Poissons" is...fine. But "Hero" and the scene it accompanies are some of the few things I actually like about RWBY, which says a lot about how good that song is.
"Heffalumps and Woozles" is not about actual villains but mere products of Pooh's imagination, so I am disqualifying it in my books on the same grounds as "Look Away." Also, "The Hounds" is pretty damn good.
I really appreciate the sheer drama of Raphael singing his own damn boss theme, and I honestly could not give a shit about that rich white girl.
I always like a good Weird Al, and "Let The Pun Fit the Crime" is very good, but "The Pitiful Children" had already seared itself in my brain as one of my favorite villain songs.
I’m right there with in Great at Crime. Epithet Erased songs are just so good lyrically.

Round 1 of 8, Group 4 of 8
propaganda and summaries are under the cut (May include spoilers)
RWBY: 7.11 Gravity
TW for mutilation, I think? Pretty sure the skin on his arm gets burned off but it's just colored a darker shade of red, no blood or anything)
Between Watts, Tyrian, and the seemingly endless swarm of Grimm, evil is encroaching on our heroes from all sides. The biggest threat, however, may be hiding where they least expect it.
Legit one of the best RWBY episodes of all time. It starts with a battle between the military Commander and later self-proclaimed Dictator of Atlas, James Ironwood, and Arthur Watts, a disgraced former Atlesian scientist and villain. They have the first gun-only fight in the show and it's awesome, held in a former combat arena that changes just as Watts hacks it to his whim during their fight. The fight ends with Watts trapping Ironwoods only good arm (the right half of his body is completely replaced by robotics) in a forcefield, and just as he turns around, Ironwood painfully pulls his arm out, leaving him heavily injured, before taking down Watts. The second half of the episode deals with Ironwood, arm freshly bandaged, finding a symbol of one of the main villain's other minions inside his very own office. This drives him into a spiral of paranoia, where he abandons all the progress the heroes and him have made this season, to replace it with a utopian dream of rising his kingdom high into the athmosphere, out of the villain's reach (for now) Little bit of context: The main villain, Salem, can only be stopped if literally all people on this world work together. She plans on uniting four relics which will call back the gods to this planet, and if they return and humanity does nit coexist peacefully, they will wipe them all out. So yeah, that's a big deal. While Ironwood and team RWBY (protags) argue, an apparition of Salem appears in his office, reminding him of how unstoppable she is, which further drives him into a spiral and makes him warrant an arrest for team RWBY. The episode ends with RWBY preparing to fight Ironwood's special ops team, the Ace Ops. https://youtu.be/QFngxDIYOqY
Tangled: The Series: 2.14 Rapunzel and the Great Tree
tw fakeout death? As mentioned Rapunzel magic-burns tf out of her friend's arm
The path of black rocks leads Rapunzel and her companions to the Big Tree, an ancient, magical place. They encounter the unpredictable Hector and discover the moonstone magic formula. Hector proves to be a dangerous adversary to the group and Rapunzel realizes that her only chance to save her friends is the uncontrollable Moonstone magic formula.
fun little disney princess show has an episode with a showstopping emmy-winning solo, villain with 2 minutes of screentime who became a tumblr sexyman, and then DEEP LORE THAT RECONTEXTUALIZES THE ORIGINAL MOVIE'S MAGIC SYSTEM AND ALSO THE DISNEY PRINCESS GETS TEMPORARILY POSSESSED AND SINGS AN EVIL REPRISE OF HER MAIN SONG AND HER HAIR AND EYES GO BLACK AS SHE BEGINS TO SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AROUND HER AND AT THE END OF THE EP SHE'S ONLY DRAGGED OUT OF IT AFTER BURNING HER FRIEND'S ARM TO BONE

I would honestly love to hear your thoughts on this song I've loved for a while, but only connected it to IDW Prowl once I got back into the fandom: "Hero" from RWBY. It's not an exact fit since it's meant for a specific character, but it still works.
Anon, I am shaking you by the shoulders /pos
Thank you for introducing me to this song.
(Spotify | YouTube)
The vibe is not IDW Prowl at all, but the lyrics absolutely are:
Take my hand // I'm here to protect you // Nothing will stop me // Understand // There's no sacrifice that I won't make // I'll risk it all to keep you safe // Trust me to be strong // I'll be your hero, just hold on
I would die // Without regret, I'd offer up my life // With zero reservations I would fly // Into the sun, if that would keep our dream alive
Deliver you from harm // Shelter in my arms // The fear will surely fade // Know right now the plan I made will guide us home // We'll survive this storm
I will fight // For you no matter how I am despised // Portrayed as cruel and heartless, I am might // I am power, I'm due process, I will smite
Our enemies destroy // Mettle I'll deploy // No chance that I won't take // My oath to you, I won't forsake // Hope's not gone, just hold on
Take my hand // I'm here to protect you // Nothing will stop me // Understand // There's no sacrifice that I won't make // I'll risk it all to keep you safe // Trust me to be strong // I'll be your hero, just hold on
What if it's true as they say // That I don't have a heart // That I'm more a machine than a man? // What would that change // Would it matter at all? // I've made my plan
Hearts and minds may not agree // Emotions topple strategy // You can't believe in honesty // That your children can win a war
Take my hand // I'm here to protect you // Nothing will stop me // Understand // There's no sacrifice that I won't make // I'll risk it all to keep you safe // Trust me to be strong // I'll be your hero, just hold on
I am blown away.
It’s a shame the vibe is off because the lyrics are the most Prowl lyrics I’ve seen so far.

What are your thoughts about the fight of Ironwood vs everyone in vol. 8? I was so annoyed by it. I felt like they nerfed Ironwood so hard. Oh, and the writers decided to NOW use Marrow's semblance to stop characters before they can start fighting (the Ace Ops). Would have been nice to have consistent writing and have Marrow use that in the fight against RWBY. (Loved your review of JLxRWBY, btw. You put exactly how I felt into words.)
Well the reason you feel like Ironwood was nerfed was, in fact, because he WAS. I pulled this fact from the rwby wikia because I don’t have it in me to actually hunt down the quote, but, according to the Director’s commentary on episode 12, ‘the reason that Ironwood lost was because the writers felt that Team ORNJ deserved a win after losing to Neopolitan in Volume 7.’
So don’t worry, you’re not crazy. Ironwood absolutely got nerfed so MKEK could make sure JNR didn’t look like the jobbers we know they are. That’s plot armour, deus ex machina, and hand of the author at work, straight from the horse’s mouth. No one is allowed call MKEK good writers ever again, do the words 'kill your darlings' mean nothing anymore?
Anyway, this fight. It’s crap. Honestly a lot of the fights in vol8 are just really bad, that volume was just a disgrace in every way. Personal gripe: the song that plays over it, ‘Be Strong and Hit Stuff’, is probably my least favourite song on the entire vol8 album and considering all of them on the whole suck except for the one that was not written for the show, that’s a low bar. Most of why I hate this song is because Nora is without a doubt my absolute least favourite character in the whole show, but it’s also just. I’ll do song rankings one day.
It's just the same style of formulaic combat that rwby does in every fight of the entire volume. It’s just JNROW mashing their attack buttons until they get a decent combo. And the qrow and robyn and marrow vs the other ace ops scene? Don’t even talk to me about that, so Marrow suddenly has the guts to stop fighters in their tracks when it’s his old team? Vol8 really took every character I vaguely liked and put a gun to their likability (except you Watts you kept slaying, I named this blog for YOU).
I mean, real quick combat breakdown: Emerald rips off Mercury’s kick and then does nothing for the rest of the fight. Jaune and Oscar trade off ‘whack ironwood with my bladed weapon/cane’ before Ren does his stupid rope trick and decides he wants to try whack at Ironwood. Ironwood is doing great here honestly, he’s just in full boxer mode, his guard’s consistently up, he recovers quickly and adapts, he lands some good blows. Jaune and Ren also quietly drop out of the fight here, because Nora is getting powered up by Winter, somehow, even though she’s never been shown to use dust ever she suddenly uses it all the time even though her weapon lacks the same sort of dust casing as Weiss so where’s this come from you’d think she’d have used it against Cinder when she was literally getting killed but WHATEVER-
Anyway Nora gets the first major relevant hit on Ironwood because literally of course she does, we cut off to Marrow being a turncoat, and then cut back to Winter and Oscar riding a Manticore while Nora joins Jaune and Ren and Emerald in ‘not existing in this fight sequence anymore’ land, and apparently they just decided after getting one hit in they’d pause to get on an animal instead of continuing attacking, this fight makes no sense.
Anyway, Ironwood destroys the Manticore barehanded, king shit, Winter hits him with the ice dust she suddenly uses, Oscar poke attacks, and right when ironwood’s about to knock this kid out of the stratosphere, Winter uses some sort of flashy finishing move that is literally ripped from Kill La Kill I see those studio trigger sparkles. Again, also makes no fucking sense either, what even is this, and don’t tell me ‘rule of cool’ because it wasn’t cool, it was lame. And also, so much for ‘give JNRO a win’, they can’t even stick to their own favouritism because Winter does all the actual fuckin work here.
Overall scores
Story Context: 4/10
Fight Choreography: 1/10
Authorial Bullshit Intervention (Plot Armour, this time admitted to): 10/10
Emotional Investment: 4/10 (but only because I wanted Ironwood to at least megaton punch Jaune or Nora into outer space)
Deserved Outcome: 1/10
Also, thank you!! I ended up having a lot of fun writing out my JLxRWBY review, even if a lot of it was tempered by Seething Rage. Being a miserly grump sometimes is good for the soul, after all.
