this little fairytale doesn’t seem to end well… pages are torn and there’s no final chapter… (what happened when you took alyx and lewis to the tree? i… i don’t know.)… i’ll write the ending of your tragic fairytale. i am the ending of your tragic fairytale… i’m not afraid of you, you’re nothing but the unwritten pages of my book… dark nightmarish tone seems inappropriate for young readers, especially its downbeat, pessimistic ending… hearts can unbreak in the story’s nick of time…
jabber jabber what are you for.
if the jabberwalker eats one of us, we do not ascend.
that’s not necessarily the same as we die, though, is it. what really happens if the jabberwalker eats you? do you, maybe, find out how the story ends? do you, maybe, read the final chapter, and find yourself back outside of the story again?
…jaune broke the story. the jabberwalker wants to fix something…
is he the door

Anyone else thinking that Luis is probably the Jabberwocky because he was forced into that role by the ascension 👀

I like how janky the Jabberwock’s head moves. You get the sense its a creature thats not all there, as if its trying to comprehend where it is or what its doing. The Jabberwock attacks whatever comes near him, but it also seems afraid somehow.

Jaune was guiding Team RWBY and C.C. through the forest back to Jaune's camp.
Jaune: Just a little while more guys and we can rest up and plan our next move.
Weiss, Blake, and Yang just nodded while Ruby just looked her head off to the side.
Jaune looked at his friend, unsure of how to bring up that topic and with his other friend trying to outright kill her. Jaune needed to think of something and quick before Neo does something too far.
Every little thing frustrated him and it was all that bitch Cinders fault!
With the feelings of anger rising, Jaune clutched his head feeling his head pound as he closed his eyes, he stopped in his tracks trying to dull the pain.
Jaune slowly opened his eyes and to his shock he was back at the Atlas Vault where the relic of creation was...
Ruby: Come on Jaune!
Jaune quickly turned around to see Team RWBY behind him with a smiling Penny waving at him.
They all walked by him and into the vault.
Jaune made a step forward...
Cinder: Oh, what fun you had.
Jaune stopped mid step as he felt Cinder lean into his ear.
Cinder: Tell me though...was it worth it?
Jaune spun around but as he did...he was no longer in the vault rather he was in a destroyed city.
Buildings in ruin, fires everywhere and the screaming...God's the screaming.
Jaune walked forward looking at all the destruction and suffering.
Cinder: All those lives cut short...at your hand.
???:Mama! Mama! Wake up please!
Jaune turned to the sound of a crying child, desperately shaking their lifeless mother but to no avail.
Jaune ran over and was about to reach out to help.
Cinder: Is what your feeling even real?
This caused Jaune to stop.
Cinder: It's time you stopped pretending, Jaune.
Suddenly, the scene changed again and this time he was back on the bridge, just in time to see Neo, attempt to kill Ruby.
Jaune: Neo No!
Jaune tried to intervene but she phased right through him as Yang took the attack which sent her over the edge.
Jaune shook his head fighting the headache until he was suddenly infront of the now dead Penny.
Jaune could only looked in horror as his blade held a crimson hue at the tip.
Jaune: P-penny...?
Cinder: Your friend died by your hand, and the tears you shed we're all empty...why is that?
Suddenly a gust of wind pushed Jaune to look behind him, and their staring back at him with a smirk was his tormentor, Cinder.
Jaune: Cinder...
Cinder: Sorrow.
Cinder: Anger.
Cinder: Regret.
Cinder: These words...all mean nothing to you.
Cinder outstretched both her arms to Jaune, as if inviting him In to hug her.
Cinder: For you, Jaune, are but a puppet: My puppet.
Jaune grit his teeth as he pointed Crocea Mors at Cinder.
Jaune: I'll kill you!
Cinder just smirked, arms still outstretched, as Jaune just snarled before charging at Cinder, his blade pierces her chest and through her back, but all she does is wrap her arms around Jaune, locking him in her embrace.
Cinder: Good Jaune, very good, fill that rusted-hollow heart with rage...
Jaune just grabbed his blade and twisted it to the right, cleaving Cinder in half, but she just vanished as her laughter echoed in his ears.
Cinder: Let it engulf you-consume you...
Jaune panted as he fell to one knee, his sword keeping him upright as soon he was back in the forest, still the Rusted Knight.
Cinder: That you may burn your world to the ground-as I did.
Jaune looked behind him to see, Team RWBY and C.C stunned as a Jabberwocker laid dying.
Jaune stood back up, catching his breath, as no one tried to make a move, not even sure what the hell was going on, eventually though Weiss broke the ice.
Weiss: Are you okay Jaune?
Jaune: ...Yes, yes I'm...I'm fine...I-I, let's just keep going....
Everyone looked at each other but nodded and continued except for C.C who looked at the Rusted Knight with a smile as he jumped onto Jaune shoulders, and usually Jaune would have swatted him down almost instantly but Jaune looked to be far away in his own world.
This was a curious and wonderful little development...
They had finally seen the knight's will begin to crack!

ruby’s face here really hammers it in that this poor girl is traumatized and to an insane length. she stops fighting back against the jabberwocker, her whole body freezes, and she starts sweating. it takes her a good minute or so to just get back up on her feet afterwards too. everything she has been through is finally coming to the surface and she can’t keep it down anymore. she’s literally having flashbacks in these scenes and its causing her to have a panic attack. in reality, ruby is 17 and was offered to become a huntress at 15 and be tasked with saving the world. she didn’t sign up for any of this. team rwby may win the war in the end, but ruby’s going to be living with it forever.

RWBY Vo9 E9 Review
This easily the shortest one of these I’ll ever do.
First of all
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crwby ya just can’t slide this in so casually! I like the design but I am shocked they gave it to us without the full reveal.
Tumblr media
This was warm. I appreciate the moment of them getting Jaune on track which does lead them to the tree. It’s also very cute how both fans of the Rusted Knigh totally went “I gotta hug him.”
Tumblr media
Yang is taking this way better than I thought. Probably because the episode is short and also they saw the Paper Pleasers come back with the same core values. Waiting has to be the worst part.
Tumblr media
Ruby has done another thing many people can relate to. “Oh that didn’t kill me. What do I do from here?” Poor girl was not expecting more lessons. She fully thought she killed herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s fucked up but cool. They would be criminal for not doing it. Weiss accidentally made this man fall, again, but I really don’t think he’s that hurt. Honestly with what they know and when Ruby comes out the tree, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went “Jaune it’s your turn. Make your acceptance look the way you want then comeback out and we’ll leave.” Which is code for “you get to be young again.” Personally, I’m down for it.
Also, confirmation that Alyx is dead. Curious Cat straight up murdered her while her brother went home and eventually wrote the book because I’m pretty sure he was expecting to look behind him and his sister! Everyone is hating Neo; man I want to see this cat beat up by Ruby 2.0 and fed to the Jabberwocker

It occurs to me that all the fun of an Alice in Wonderland story kind of gets sucked out when your characters can just beat up everyone there instead of being forced to engage with the nonsensical and unfair rules of the setting. Where's the fun in tricking the Queen of Hearts and playing a bizarre game of hedgehog croquet? Just knock her block off.
I might have argued that RWBY backed itself into an inevitable corner by being a combat show - you have to forsake the bizarre rules and trickery of the Ever After for choreographed fights because that's just what RWBY is and what the viewer expects - IF we hadn't been introduced to the Jabberwock first thing. Plus, you know, Neo is there. We have the perfect setup for classic battles via old enemies/fantasy beasts and new, fun, interesting conflicts that require the girls to navigate a situation with skills other than brute strength... but no. I mean, maybe we'll get something moving forward, but the Prince's game isn't very reassuring in that regard.
You know what I was thinking about throughout that part of the episode? The Magicians. Specifically the scene where Quintin plays Push. Basically, he's a magic user playing a game of War, but in this version the whole point is to cheat. The player who's better at putting the right card in their own hand, the wrong card in their opponent's, or generally just fucking with the deck is the winner; a game of skill, power, and creativity. For all the show's many other problems (oh boy did it crash and burn lol) I love that scene and it kept popping into my head as the Prince yelled about humans cheating while, of course, cheating himself. That cheating could have been interesting, especially with a supposed strategist leading the charge, but as you say, instead we just get another beat 'em up fight. (You know, how Yang also wanted to solve her arm problem.)
Which I'm admittedly ambivalent about because we dodged three potential battles in the first two episodes (vines, Jabberwock, guards) and I was absolutely going, "When is RWBY going to give us some combat?" but it's one of those details that make me wonder why we're in the Ever After in the first place. If the show wanted Ruby to grapple with her depression while engaging in straightforward battle sequences, rather than grappling with her depression via the twisty, metaphorical rules of an alternate reality... she could have just done that in Vacuo. Thus far, three episodes in out of ten, all the Ever After has provided is a weather cue for when Ruby is feeling really sad. Otherwise every important character moment is easily removed from our setting. Some opportunistic Vacuo thief could have stolen Yang's arm. Ruby could have found something that reminds her of Penny among the Atlas civilians (which probably would have made more sense). Hell, people can even ask probing, thematically relevant questions like, 'Who are you?' given that they're unwelcome refugees. I'm slightly interested in the trio remaining small for a time, but beyond that everything we've gotten - Ruby is separated from her weapon, Neo's semblance evolves, Yang and Blake are still flirting, etc. - is not a result of the setting, it just happens to be happening in that setting, which begs the question of why we're taking this Ever After detour in the first place.

RWBY SPOILERS
Everyone is losing their shit over Ruby holding Weiss but no one is talking about how THAT AINT RUBY.
We know Neo was with the Jabberwock. The Jabberwock showed up. Where’s Neo? The Curious Cat says “Follow me,” and Ruby moves off screen. The heroes flee and a Ruby flees with them.
THAT RUBY HAS SAID NO LINES AND THE INTRO HEAVILY INDICATES NEO WILL TAKE RUBYS FORM. ITS NOT FUCKIN RUBY. ITS NOT.
Edit: okay fine but I can’t be mad after the episode I got that I was wrong.

So, since Alice in Wonderland was brought up, I dont think I ever sent any of the non standard characters from RWBY Volume 9 which takes place in essentially Alice in Wonderland, or Alyx and Lewis in this case, where the inhabitants called Afterans are mostly like pc programs that perform a task, get reborn, then complete a new task. You get new one off characters like...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Curious (later Furious) Cat who was driven mad with an infinite craving for knowledge and barred from entering other worlds.
Tumblr media
The Blacksmith whom I affectionately call Mecha Mommy who's basically God who retools Afterans when they expire and go to yggdrasil.
Tumblr media
The Jabberwalker, the only being able to permanently end an Afteran's rebirth cycle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Herb, the, well, herbalist who helps people find their purpose.
(Okay, what the fuck; my laptop overheated the first time I tried to finally answer this...)
The Curious/Furious Cat - I feel like the colors would have been better swapped: the black and white being docile and the more Wonderlandian color-scheme being used for the monstrous version.
The Blacksmith - A pretty solid automaton/robot design. A good fusion of maternal aspects and cold, unyielding steel while still maintaining a humanoid shape.
The Jabberwalker - Alright, first thing's first: Interesting take with the name. A lot of modern applications of Carrol's work usually shorten it to Jabberwock as both an acknowledgement of the actual creature and as a way of getting out of using the word 'Jabberwocky' because it sounds too 'goofy'.
Secondly, not going to lie: I wish it had more color. Like maybe a stripe of bright purple or blue along its spine to reflect the Wonderlandian influence.
Herb: Okay, now this is beautiful. Not only are they blue (which is, like, a thousand points in my eyes) but I like how this design feels like it would fit in both a Wonderlandian fantasy or a scifi setting.
Though, looking it some more, I'm oddly reminded of one of the aliens from Ben 10...

#throwing my hat in the ring and saying Raven#idk i think its time for her to re-enter the narrative. ( via @rubyneo )
raven saving them is a compelling idea and one that i think makes the most immediate mechanical sense—portals, and all—BUT, increasingly my impression is that leaving the ever after has to be done on the ever after’s terms. jaune is mostly wrong but there’s a tiny kernel of rightness in what he thinks; no sacrifices necessary but you do need to go through the tree, which is to say you need to know what the tree is. (<-home.) the tree wants to get them home, the tree is trying to give them the answer to the riddle. summer rose and salem are both haunting the ever after, painfully visible but not quite seen; in contrast raven is only present insofar as the things she said about asking questions and searching for truth are pressingly relevant. which isn’t nothing but there’s a significant degree of separation there versus the immediacy of salem and particularly summer.
(<- if i weren’t a salem wrote it truther i’d be pretty sold on summer rn; as it is, i’m leaning more toward salem bc if the ever after is her story, in the sense that she invented it, that ties the whole musical allusion together breathtakingly well.)
so my thinking is that raven’s participation in their departure from the ever after is probably going to be reflective of the nature of her relevancy too it, ie she herself is neither the door nor the answer but she does provide the means to understand the answer. which might?? take the form of a literal encounter between herself and ruby (<- making raven either the gentleman, or, more probably, the early-iteration musical’s jabberwock) or mechanically providing the means through which summer enters the ever after (<- i imagine salem would have her own means, if it’s her) or possibly just a symbolic presence in the form of yang mining the things raven said to her to gain new insight/new perspective (<- i am mostly in this camp, presently). & this brings raven tangibly closer to the narrative in the wake of summer/salem properly arriving in the ever after, which sets up the groundwork for raven’s true reintroduction in, broadly, i think probably early/mid v10.
i’m NOT done with the insane wonderlandposting i will never be done but listen. as of 9.8 every single narrative piece is set up exactly 1:1 with the approximate midpoint of the musical’s second act, except one. one player missing. once piece who’s not on the board.
and that piece is the queen of hearts. not the book’s queen of hearts—the literary allusion is working on a different and predominantly symbolic layer of the narrative, while the musical allusion is servicing emotional arcs and plot; jaune is the book’s hatter and the musical’s rabbit. & the musical’s queen of hearts is not a villain. she’s a reflection of alice’s mother-in-law (who has become the mother alice never had). the locus of the hatter’s plan to destroy alice is a plot to usurp and execute the queen of hearts; alice and her friends foil this plot and the queen of hearts, in turn, arrives in the nick of time to save them from the hatter, reunite alice with chloe (with her self, with her heart), and send everyone home.
so.
points at summer. points at salem. which one of them do you think it’ll be!

Sorry to ask but do you think of actually making a rusted knight jaune time travel fanfiction
See that's the real question I have several ideas how to do it. 1.) Rewrite Best Kinda accident where RK Jaune finally... Gives up, and goes to ascend only to Wake up in Volume 1. Either, the morning of Initiation, Right when Pyrrha unlocked his aura or during a combat match like in the original fanfic.
2.) RK Jaune goes to the tree to find Alyx and her brother after he's been poisoned, see's the Cat as he's attacking Alyx and saves her and falls through the tree with her ending up in Remnant 5-15 years before volume 1
3.) 2-3 years after time turned back for Jaune the paper pleasers are destroyed by the jabberwock, Jaune distraught kills it and mourns, until he see's them again as the Genial Gems. This makes Jaune not fear the tree and walk to it, and see the way back home.
And it's hear Jaune makes a choice, to stay and wait for RWBY or return to Remnant before all of this and try to make a better world for his friends... One where he won't stand beside them anymore but hopefully be able to meet them again even if they won't know him as their friend in it's timeline.

Catching up on some rwby reactions (from gh0xttherebel, 10/10 would recommend), and seeing Ruby go from ch1: immediately reaching for Crescent Rose on instinct to help fight the jabberwocker only to remember she doesn’t have it, to ch7: where she finally has Crescent Rose back but now she’s almost afraid to even touch it and completely freezes when she tries to use it is just- ow
