When I suddenly remembered that Rust Cohle spent almost his entire childhood raised by his father in Alaska and now the fourth season of True Detective is set in Alaska.
Tumblr media
And that his father's name is Travis...
Tumblr media
And that Cohle said, "He had a lot of strange ideas..."
Tumblr media
...That is straight up Rust's Daddeh.

With the new season out and Travis Cohle making an appearance, do you think you'd ever pick up writing Rust x Marty again? Love love loved your writing!
I'm not entirely sure just yet! Honestly, I think that depends on how much more lore from S1 we get in S4, and how extensively they draw potential ties back to Rust and Marty. If the Travis thing is as much as we get, I don't know if it'll necessarily light new fires in me. After all, I did already write about his final days and the old cabin in Alaska about eight years before the Night Country people did 😅 That said, I wrote over 400K of fiction for Rust/Marty back in the day, and it was...and still is...a large body of work. I'm kind of afraid I don't have much left to say? But like I said, that depends on S4 and if we get any new info or tangible strings leading back to the boys in Louisiana! WE SHALL SEE. Thank you for the love 💖

I gotta know, what do you think Rust was like when he was married and a father? I wonder about it ALL the time. There’s no way he was that different given the way he grew up but it’s so odd imagining him pre Crash
Yeah I don’t think he was vastly different pre-crash era because of how he was brought up by his father in Alaska! I’d say he was perhaps a tad less cynical and a bit more open (enough to get married and have a whole ass kid without the threat of crumbling his deep-set constitutions towards life). He was probably still on the more stoic side but could let go of that attitude a bit more seamlessly here and there. Given Travis Cohle seemed like a lil weirdo certain tendencies def passed on to Rust (especially growing up rurally and so removed from mainstream culture).
His ex-wife saw potential in that odd duck and staked claim like nobody’s business. Probably bc he’s always had that underlying charm with him being so sharp methinks.
(She was the original ‘I can fix him 😌’ and she’s real for that)

Theories confirmed so far:
Travis is indeed Travis Cohle, aka Rust's father
Annie K was dating one of the scientists and her tongue was being kept frozen in the facility. Why? Not sure as of yet.
The Beetles song does indeed remind Danvers of her deceased son, but it wasn't tied to the accident that was shown.
New things:
Spiral. Tuttle foundation mentions. They paid for the facility, interesting tie in.
Definitely 100% convinced the Dyatlov Pass was inspiration for this case now based on the condition of the bodies.
One scientist alive so far. Some unaccounted for because they are thawing. Still running theory is the killing of the scientists was somehow revenge for Annie K, or made to look like revenge for Annie K.
I still think she most likely was killed by the miners for protesting the mine. But with the weird radio disturbances and mentions of poisoned water, I think it is save to say some hallucinations happening in the show are manmade, not spiritual.
The show keeps mentioning "asking the right questions". Which I have not been asking the right ones since I don't have all the knowledge the characters do about Ennis and the town lore/rumors.
UPDATE I HADNT FINISH THE EPISODE YET AND UH--
THE TRAILER WAS A BIT BONKERS.
And naturally, some of the god damn scientists are missing and it is the CREEPY MOFO CLARK.
New theory. The scientists dying was all Clark going bonkers and the real "mystery" is going to be who killed Annie K and catching them. And all this wild shit was the only way to get attention back to her case honestly.

Travis Cohle taught Rust to read with a worn-out copy of The Little Prince. Unfortunately, this edition of the book got lost when Rust made the move from Alaska to Texas, but years later he found a similar copy at a garage sale and repurchased it. He has read it at least once every ten years since, finding new meaning in the book each time.
