Whenever I think about Rust and the loss of his own family I feel an understanding on his behavior before the events of the series. Imagine growing up as a lonely child, isolated and he probably already had a distinct and odd personality. Maybe being used to that he didn't have any problems with that isolation initially. He grew up and as life went on things seemed to get better, just to lose everything eventually. When things like that happen, when you haven't had much connection with others and felt hope for it, then finally getting and then losing it, it's crushing, I can understand that at it's core. You think it's your nature or the cruel nature of our world, you try to rationalize it, only to come to a hopeless dead end and you don't see the point in putting any effort to establish new connections toning yourself down if it's all futile anyway

I'm in a better place at the moment but I've felt a similar way and I can understand and empathize a lot with those aspects of the writing of Rust's personality
